Introduction

About the task: “Research has found that smart phones are affecting productivity, communication in the work place, social engagement, and have an effect in education”. Do you agree with this statement?

Yes , I agree to this statement that smart phones are affecting people in an unrealized manner. We are becoming slaves to our own technology.

The are a lot of arguments that I will bring forward supporting my statement towards smartphones.

Smartphones Explained

A smartphone is a mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a contemporary feature phone.

Smartphones and feature phones may be thought of as handheld computers integrated with a mobile telephone, but while most feature phones are able to run applications based on platforms such as Java ME, a smartphone usually allows the user to install and run more advanced applications.

Smartphones run complete operating system software providing a platform for application developers. Thus, they combine the functions of a camera phone and a Personal digital assistant (PDA)

Blackberry Torch…..9800

Impact on productivity

• First, there’s the threat of burnout (you can’t be very productive if your brain is fried) and the constant distractions.

• All those apps, the endless email checking, and texting can keep you from real work, not to mention that they can keep you from staying in the moment and enjoying time-off.

• Smartphones can cause an increase in work load, causing delays and not meeting deadlines at work.

• Can decrease profits in a business and increase costs, as more people spend time online.

• They can cause an increase in laziness and procrastination.

Impact on social engagement

• Smartphone addiction prevents people from socialising with friends and even family.

• People become dependant on social networks and other internet services.

• Most of the time during the day is spent in front of a computer, which results in unhealthy lives.

• You end up with teenagers that cannot socialise with their peers.

• Increase in the number of paedophiles and abusers. Children become vulnerable to all the bad influences.eg Porn, Abusers, alcohol etc.

Impact on education

• Smartphones are a disruption in school. Text messaging , online chatting and social networking can be used to cheat on tests and exams.

• Students are not able to give full attention to the lesson. If a students cell phone rings in class, it totally disrupts the class for a considerable period of time.

• Smartphones with all their features present an invasion of privacy in the schools . One of the best ways we can protect the privacy of every student is to ban them from school during the school day.

• Smartphones cause students to be lazy, and lose concentration as they have all the accessories they need to complete most tasks in their pockets.. E.g. Dictionaries, Wikipedia, Google , calculator etc.

Information about researchers

1. eMarketer did a research in March concerning smartphones. They wanted to know what influence did smartphones have in the number of new email users.

2. SAN MATEO, Calif. – Ring Central, a cloud computing based business phone system provider, announced a new survey of its customers on the changing nature of business communications

3. A study amongst sixteenGerman companies was conducted to elicit the influence of mobile e-mail on work-processes and communication.

Research Findings1. eMarketer Findings: According to eMarketer in March 2011 – There are

650 million people globally who are now using their smartphones more and more for tasks such as email and social networking. This number is set to rocket due to the penetration of affordable smartphones within the market. Research from Comscore in December 2009 supports this theory – it found that 70 per cent of smartphone users have accessed email and 43 per cent have accessed social networks via their devices.

2. SAN MATEO, Calif : The survey reveals that the Smartphone has become an integral part of daily life and is having a dramatic impact on personal life. Survey results showed that intimate relations and Smartphones tied as the number one thing survey respondents cannot live without. As further proof of the ardour this business tool has provoked, an increasingly mobile workforce would rather give up their morning cup of coffee than their Smartphones.

3. Smartphones and having intimate relationships tied (40%) for being the number one thing respondents cannot live without.

4. The majority (79%) of respondents cite the Smartphone as the phone they used the most to conduct business, as compared to an office phone or home phone.

5. Smartphones are also encroaching on computers as well, with 34% of respondents using the Smartphone more than the computer for business. In fact, 7% don’t even take their laptop when they travel for business if they have their Smartphone. Is this the beginning of a coming dramatic shift?

6. Sixteen German companies: According to our findings smartphones have the potential to improve and accelerate work processes through timely provision of information, enhanced reachability and the simplification of coordination processes.

Conclusion

• Smartphones do have a positive influence in all the above arguments, but it’s the responsibility of the user not to abuse the privilege .

• Smartphones can help improve a lot of things in todays society, but they have to be utilised responsibly.

• Smartphones in school are an unnecessary distraction that take time away from teachers and can be a source in cheating and can hamper the students future education.

• We must not become slaves of our own technology, we must acquire a balance in al we do, for us to be able to enjoy this technology.

• Smartphones are the future.• Smartphone is Primary Business Phone.
