Smarter Assessment Enhancements

SBE retreat

April 15, 2016

1

Delaware educators helped to develop and field test

the Smarter assessment and related resources

2

• Delaware educators: – Helped set Smarter achievement levels

– Developed scoring of field test items

– Created and refined the Smarter rubrics

– Scored writing to help develop Smarter anchor sets and resources

• Questions were written and reviewed by educators from Delaware and around the country for content, bias/sensitivity, and accessibility.

• Delaware IHEs were also involved in this work.

Now educators can use Smarter in new ways

to ensure student proficiency of Delaware standards

3

Since January, we have made significant changes:

• Smarter website now includes practice tests and examples

with annotated student responses to help teachers better

understand how the Smarter Balanced tests measure

Delaware’s content standards.

• Educators can access deeper level student score

information using the Online Report System (ORS) portal

and also through PerformancePlus to assist with

instructional decision-making.

Online Reporting System (ORS) portal

provides student scores within three weeks

4

• Beginning April 14, educators can view student score

information using the Online Reporting System

(ORS)

• Student scores will be uploaded daily and made

available on a rolling basis – within three weeks of

Smarter test submission

• Faster access to score information allows educators

to adjust instruction earlier than last year

Smarter Assessment Scores:

now available in 3 weeks

• Digital Library and Interim Assessment resources have been available since

January 2015.

• Score reports for parents and schools will arrive by mail in July.

• Preliminary online scores will be available earlier according to the following

scoring windows:

5

If Computerized Adaptive Test

(CAT) and Performance Task (PT)

for a content area are completed

by this date:

The score will be available in the

Online Reporting System (DeSSA

Portal) by this date:

Online Reporting System (ORS) portal

includes deeper levels of student data

6

• This year, ORS portal provides both teachers and districts

with claim-level data so they can better assess student

learning of the Delaware standards

This is just the beginning – PerformancePlus provides

educators with even more information to guide

in-class instruction

7

• By the second half of April, scores will be available in

PerformancePlus within one month of Smarter test

submission

• PerformancePlus:• Offers prepared reports and gives educators the ability to create their

own

• Allows users to save and share reports for use in PLCs, etc.

• Reports can be exported to Excel/PDF

• Can be accessed 24/7

• Can be shared with parents

• Educators are being provided additional training

opportunities and supports to learn the new enhancements.

PerformancePlus: Educators can

view individual student score reports

8

• PerformancePlus allows educators to review ELA/math scores for each student

• Now shows full claim scores

• Shows how students performed within different areas of the test

• Demonstrates each student’s understanding of the Delaware standards

Full Claim Scores

Educators can access target-level data to see how students

are doing on the individual standards

9

• Educators can toggle the data between targets to determine

areas of greater instructional needs related to individual

standards.

PerformancePlus: Provides more options for

understanding student proficiency

• Educators can view grade-level and class-level data by claim level

• Provides more ways to visualize information – users can choose pie charts,

bar graphs, etc.,

• Shows numbers as both percentages and counts

10

Educators

can click on

slices for a

list of

students

that fall into

the

associated

category

PerformancePlus: Shows student movement

and allows for sorting by movement levels

• Educators can view how students are moving towards understanding the

standards

• Educators can display information for entire class or limit to students by

individual movement (i.e. display only upward movement, downward

movement, lateral movement)

11

Educators can click on

each arrow for a list of all

the students in this

category and their scores

PerformancePlus: Shows comparisons

across schools• For example, this report gives districts and teachers a district-level

comparison of how each building is performing on the same

assessment.

12

Educators can view scores by groups

13

• Educators can drill deeper to view student achievement:– By building, teacher, class, grade, race and ethnicity, gender, etc.

– By dynamic sub-grouping (RTI tier, cohorts, etc. – districts/schools can create to meet different needs)

• Shows detailed class averages including the number of students at each proficiency level

• Educators can choose different views such as students’ highest scores or most-recent scores

Educators can compare student performance

across multiple assessments

14

• Educators can access archives of previous student performance and

also see how students are currently performing across a variety of

assessments

• Access to multiple assessment scores allows educators to fully

assess student trajectory and better target needed supports

This year’s Family Score Report provides more meaningful

information on student understanding

15

• Family score report helps parents and students

better understand how well students are learning

the Delaware standards

• Will be mailed to families this July

2016 Family Score Report2015 Score Report

• Includes detailed

information about how
