Continue fleet modernization – By 2030, the company expects more than 80 percent of its generation mix to come from zero and lower CO2-emitting sources.
Lower Carbon Future - Reduce the CO2 emissions from our generation fleet by 40% from the 2005 level by 2030.
Continue investments in nuclear fleet – Through 2017, this zero CO2 emissions option marked 19 consecutive years operating at a capacity factor exceeding 90 percent, and the company is evaluating the possibility of extending nuclear operating licenses.
Expand renewables and natural gas – Invest $11 billion over through 2026 in new natural gas, wind and solar generation.
Promote energy efficiency – Expects cumulative energy savings to grow to 22,000 GWh by 2030, which is the equivalent to the annual usage of 1.8 million homes.
Modernize the electric grid – Invest to create a smarter, more resilient grid with smart grid technologies that enable renewables, and protect against extreme weather.

Duke Energy faces a challenging future. We must continue to meet our customers’ growing demand for energy, and reduce the carbon emissions our power plants release.
The Energy Challenge is an educational tool to demonstrate the tradeoffs and cost implications of choosing an energy generation mix to meet that challenge.
The mission is to develop a plan that strikes a balance between the:

Energy Challenge - Data
The data reflects Duke Energy’s U.S. service territory and facilities, and is aggregated across Duke Energy’s entire service footprint.
Public, external data (i.e., EPRI, Department of Energy) is used for all external parameters, and certain assumptions and limitations have been made (e.g. renewables are limited based on factors such as geography and climate).
The time frame of the data is from 2006 to 2050 because that is the time period that was used nationally in international and national CO2 legislation conversations and proposals.
