    What is a smart card?

    The standard definition of a a smart card, or

    integrated circuit card (ICC), is any pocket sized card

    with embedded integrated circuits.

    OR

    A smart card is a plastic card with a small, built

    in microcomputer chip and integrated circuit

    that can store and process a lot of data

    History : smart card Invention

    In 1968 German electrical engineer Helmut

    Grttrup and his colleague Jrgen Dethloff

    invented the automated chip card.

    receiving a patent in 1982, while working for

    German company Giesecke & Devrient.

    The first mass use of the cards was as a

    Tlcarte for payment in French pay phones,

    starting in 1983.

    What does smart card have?

    A smart card resembles a credit card in size andshape, but inside it is completely different. First ofall, it has an inside -- a normal credit card is a simple

    piece of plastic. The inside of a smart card usuallycontains an embedded microprocessor.

    The microprocessor is under a gold contact pad on

    one side of the card.Smart cards are defined by the ISO 7816 standards.

    How does a smart card works?

    Smart Card Readers are also known as card programmers(because they can write to a card), card terminals, cardacceptance device (CAD) or an interface device (IFD).

    Smart cards are portable data cards that must communicatewith another device to gain access to a display device. Cardscan be plugged into a reader, commonly referred to as a card

    terminal, or they can operate using radio frequencies (RF).

    When the smart card and the card reader come

    into contact, each identifies itself to the other

    by sending and receiving information. If themessages exchanged do not match, no further

    processing takes place.

    1. Contact smart card.

    Contact smart cards have a contact area

    comprised of several gold plated contact

    pads(chip)

    A contact smart card must be inserted in to a

    smart card reader with a direct connection to

    the conductive plates of the surface of the

    smart card.

    2. Contactless smart card.

    Uses an inbuilt internal antenna forcommunication with the card reader.

    It just requires a close proximity (10 cm.)to the

    reader.

    The antenna used in these use radio frequency to

    communicate.

    3.Microprocessor-based smart card

    The microprocessor-based smart cards have greatermemory storage.

    A microprocessor card, can add, delete and manipulateinformation in its memory on the card. Similar to acomputer, a microprocessor card has an input/outputport operating system and hard disk with built-in securityfeatures.

    The microprocessor-based smart cards have=> 8-bit processor

    => 512 byte RAM

    => 16 byte ROM

    4. MEMORY BASED SMART CARDS

    used for applications in which the function of

    the card is fixed.

    Memory cards simply store data and can be

    viewed as a small floppy disk with optional

    security .

    These cards are widely used as prepaid

    phone cards .
