HENAAC SCHOLARS PROGRAMhttp://www.greatmindsinstem.org/henaac/scholars/

The first HENAAC conference was held in 1989 as a means of identifying, honoring, and documenting the contributions of outstanding Hispanic American science, engineering, technology and math professionals. Over the past 23 years, the conference has evolved to encompass many additional activities including honoring students; providing opportunities for student leadership development; conducting a career fair where both students and professionals can look for employment and a forum where top leaders of representing corporations, government agencies, academic institutions, the military, and the business community-at-large can discuss and implement change for the betterment of our country and the Hispanic community's involvement in STEM.

For the past 23 years HENAAC has been honoring the nation's best and brightest engineers, scientists and technology experts who happen to be Hispanic. A core mission of HENAAC is to highlight and showcase outstanding role models to inspire young people to pursue careers in technology and to motivate professionals to continue to connect with the Hispanic community.

THE HENAAC SCHOLARS PROGRAMThe HENAAC Scholars Program was established in the year 2000 with the goal of contributing to the Hispanic community by awarding scholarships and grants to student leaders who affect the Hispanic community in STEM through financial assistance and recognition of their work. In its seven year history the program has awarded more than $1,500,000 in educational grants to over 850 students pursuing careers in STEM, and over $1,100,000 in travel grants to over 5,000 STEM students.

CAREER: Cognitive and Metacognitive Activities in Engineering Design Education

http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=1148806

This engineering education research project seeks to better understand the connection between students' metacognition, or their own strategies for learning, and how they develop their abilities in engineering design. Design is a critical skill for engineers, but since it requires thinking about problems when they are ambiguous, it requires that students are able to make judgments about their own knowledge. The study will use the framework of self-regulated learning and engage undergraduate students from multiple engineering disciplines. The broader significance and importance of this project will be to inform engineering and other STEM disciplines how to develop student expertise in regulating their own learning in design and other technical activities. Since metacognition is critical to future success, the project can inform workforce development efforts in STEM fields. This project overlaps with NSF's strategic goals of transforming the frontiers through preparation of an engineering workforce with new capabilities and expertise. Additionally NSF's goal of innovating for society is enabled by creating results and research that are useful for society by informing educational policy and practices.
