THE MOST EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR CREATING THE POWERFUL
REAL TIME LOCATING SYSTEMS
MADE BY SMART TECHNOLOGY GROUP
RTLS – Real Time Locating System
RTLS allows to control the flow of people and goods in real time both indoors (with doors, gates, in open spaces, halls) as well as outdoors
RTLS facilitates the production, logistic and business processes (minimalizes costs of looking for or identifying objects)
RTLS is a new approach for the systems of access control, work time control, drive in/drive out control
RTLS – what is it?
RTLS may be implemented in logistic (warehouses, transport), production, access control, drive in/drive out control, tourism (control of tourists flow), animal breeding,
healthcare, work security and entertainment.
Such wireless technologies as Bluetooth, WiFi, ZigBee or RFID are most often used for creating RTLS.
We would like to present both pros and cons of these technologies in terms of their usability for RTLS.
RTLS – implementation
How does RTLS based on Bluetooth work?
1. Battery-powered Bluetooth tags and hubs (stations) to track tags, server.
2. Battery-powered beacons and smartphones with applications, server.
RTLS and Bluetooth
RTLS and BluetoothOption 1: Battery powered Bluetooth tags and hubs (stations) to track tags, server. Such system is used to track/locate people, goods or vehicles equipped with Bluetooth markers or Bluetooth modules built-in mobile devices.
RTLS a BluetoothOption 2: Battery-powered beacons and smartphones with applications, server.Such system is used to track/locate people with smartphones, it also allows to navigate people with smartphone and application.
Maximal reach is 80 metres, but…
metal obstacles (e.g. shelves, products, walls)reduce it’s effectively.
RTLS and Bluetooth
Are beacons really such a good device?
1. Big – due to built-in batteries.
Not suitable for marking every product.
2. Relatively expensive.
3. Difficult to maintain: battery control, battery purchase and its exchange.
RTLS and Bluetooth
Beacons’ precision – theoretically 20 cm.
But practically?
RSSI-based tracking may be quite surprising.Just turning smartphone by 90° (antenna polarization is changed) will cause that product
being tracked will be not 50 cm, but 5 metres further.
RTLS and Bluetooth
Integration – simple or not?
Bluetooth and WiFi use the same frequency.
Bluetooth changes channels while WiFi is usually using only one.
Strong WiFi signals may distrupt beacons work.
RTLS and Bluetooth
The scheme of RTLS based on WiFiRTLS and WiFi
Such system may be used to track/locate people, products/vehicles equipped with smartphones, tablets or WiFi markers.
RTLS management
Communication via access points.
Theoretical range of WiFi tag is further than Bluetooth and may be even 130 metres.
RTLS and WiFi
The biggest disadvantages?
Overall cost: • single tag price;• cost of infrastructure purchase;• access points service;• cost of batteries for tags.
RTLS and WiFi
Time-consumming process.
The regular monitoring is necessary:
- to prevent the breakdowns of access points- to calibrate RTLS often- to prevent tags deactivation- to exchange batteries when needed.
RTLS and WiFi
Slowness.
The significant number of calculations needed to be done to locate object makes that final result is shown with delay.
As a result, WiFi has to be excluded from RTLS for many businesses.
RTLS and WiFi
Conflict generator.WiFi markers may overload wireless network.
It negatively affects the work of other devices using this network.
RTLS and WiFi
How does RTLS based on ZigBee work?RTLS and ZigBee
Such system may be used for tracking/localisation people, products or vehicles equipped with ZigBee markers.
Respected origin, but right now - unpopular.
Technology launched by Philips, Freescale, Texas Instruments and Sony.
Today, it remains one of the most unpopular wireless technology.
RTLS and ZigBee
Its unpopularity has serious impact on technology itself.
Despite the fact it is easy in integration, it is hardly ever used in RTLS and therefore – there is no need to integration.
It is rarely developed and it may be missing critical updates (contrary to e.g. RFID and its generations).
RTLS and ZigBee
How does it work?Products, vehicles or people are marked with battery-powered tags. Such tags are able to broadcast signal on their own. They send it to antenna first, and then to RFID reader.
RTLS and active RFID
Theoretically the reach of RFID tag may be greater than Bluetooth or WiFi one, but…
metal obstacles (e.g. walls, shelves, products) limit it effectively.
RTLS and active RFID
Limitations.
The most serious limitation is caused by tags’ size: they cannot be used for marking small products.
They cannot be used in healthcare either – tag sterilization is impossible as it leads to its damage.
RTLS and active RFID
Real cost.
The general cost of RTLS based on active RFID is usually even few times bigger than the one based on passive RFID.
When it comes to tag hundreds or thousands products, such investition would seriously excess planned budget expenses.
RTLS and active RFID
Non-judgmental facts
Simplicity of work:all you need is tag, antenna and reader.
The rarest system failures: antennas and tags are extemely durable even in difficult conditions.
RTLS and passive RFID
Tags-winners
• use power broadcasted by RFID reader – do not have batteries; • the most flexible in terms of size – perfect for all products;• practically immortal – unless mechanically destroyed or deactivated by administrator; • the most durable in extreme weather conditions, such as high/low temperature,
heavy rain etc.;• work even after being sterilized;• the cheapest tags available.
RTLS and passive RFID
Truly flawless workPassive RFID:
• Do not affect other devices’ work in negative way.
• Do not overload wireless network – contrary to RTLS based on WiFi.
RTLS and passive RFID
Every presented technology has its pros and cons…pros cons
Bluetooth • Great precision• Native for mobile devices
• Big and expensive beacons• RSSI troubles • Conflicts with WiFi• High price of purchase
WiFi • The greatest reach• Battery level may be controlled
• High cost• Time-consumming management• Overload wireless network• Big tags• Precision determined by the density of
installed access points
ZigBee • Mesh network – great reach up to 120 m• Low power consumption
• Battery-powered tags• unpopular
Active RFID• Tags capture and storage data• Reach is increased due to own power
supply• Big and expensive tags
Passive RFID• Great variety of tags• (almost) indestructible tags• Tags do not need batteries• Great flexibility• Easy integration
• Every system requires an individual plan
So…why not to combine them all
in onereliable
tool?
RFID itself provides many advantages. But Smart Technology Group wished to offer you more.
Therefore, as the only company in the world, we decided to upgrade RFID with more technologies.
That is how SMART RFID brand was created.
RTLS and SMART RFID
The maximal performanceThe uncomparable enormity of opportunities of SMART RFID is determined
by following built-in modules
Master 01 is the most versatile RFID UHF readerIts offer of facilitations and possibilities is surprisingly broad.
No one ever before has been capable of
improving RFID in such great manner.
