What is AMI (aka Smart Metering)?
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
AMI is a smart metering solution that provides two way communications between an AMI system and various metering devices
An AMI system is capable of collecting & analysing meter data, including meter energy usage, events, power quality information and many more
AMI is an end-to-end solution, including, systems, Data Concentrators, metering devices and Customer Interface Units (CIU)

Energy Registers- Four (4) quadrant measurement provides for :
-- Import [forward] energy (taken from network)
-- Export [reverse] energy (generated by alternative source OR reverse connection)
-- Active and reactive energy registers
-- Rated energy registers (for each available TOU rate)

Data Concentrator – Web Interface
Overview
The DC450 has a powerful Web interface that enables detailed
DC configuration and visibility of PLC communications statistics
Main Functions• Device configuration
• Gathering extensive communication statistics per device
• Access the device communication statistics
• Manually adapt parameters
• Execute direct commands
• Send PING commands to individual or group of meters
• Monitor G3-PLC communication in real time
• Graphical view of the G3 PAN topology
• Powerful Utility Engineer’s tool to analyse communications

Typical Installation – Split Smart meters
14
House
The Customer Interface Unit (CIU) simply plugs into electrical outlet in the house. The CIU
provides an interface for the customer to check electricity consumption, rate information,
instantaneous power etc. In prepayment mode, the customer may enter
credit tokens into the keypad
SMART Split Meter
G3-PLC G3-PLC
Data Concentrator
Customer Interface Unit G3-PLC
The split meter is typically installed outside the house, in a street or
pole top kiosk
The PLC communications links the CIU to the
meter.The CIU must be paired
to the meter (using meter serial number)
BENEFITS:- Enhanced revenue protection- Remote meter auditing- reduced operational cost- Read meter registers remotely- Load limiting, tamper sensing, power quality data
for improved network analysis- Remote disconnection and reconnection- Import and export registers (for PV/SSEG support)- Remote device firmware update

Tasks Scheduling of tasks
Reading tasks (e.g. reading registers)
Control tasks (e.g. remote disconnect)

Instantaneous Values - Locally
18
Instantaneous Values- Meter instantaneous values may be read using
a meter software tool
- Prepayment values may be saved in text file format or exported to MS Excel
- Powerful on site (or workshop) fault finding features which enables the analysis & capture of instantaneous values on site
- Same values may be remotely read by the Smart Meter system

Instantaneous Values - Remotely
19
Instantaneous Values- When meter is installed in an on-line mode,
with Data Concentrator and Smart Meter System, then available instantaneous values may be accessed remotely
-- Prepayment credit
-- Power quality information
-- Voltage, current, PF, frequency, power etc.
- Powerful remote auditing and fault finding features
- Reduces operating costs of the utility as this level of meter analysis and auditing can be done by Utility Engineers from the office
