What is AMI (aka Smart Metering)?

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

AMI is a smart metering solution that provides two way communications between an AMI system and various metering devices

An AMI system is capable of collecting & analysing meter data, including meter energy usage, events, power quality information and many more

AMI is an end-to-end solution, including, systems, Data Concentrators, metering devices and Customer Interface Units (CIU)

Typical Installation – Split Smart meters

The Customer Interface Unit (CIU) simply plugs into electrical outlet in the house. The CIU

provides an interface for the customer to check electricity consumption, rate information,

instantaneous power etc. In prepayment mode, the customer may enter

credit tokens into the keypad

The split meter is typically installed outside the house, in a street or

The PLC communications links the CIU to the
