Engineered for constant contact with petrol

When an in-tank fuel line hose fails, the pump fails. A technician can end up dealing with an expensive fuel pump replacement, when a few inches of the right hose could have solved the problem. Gates now offers submersible fuel hose in diameters of 8mm and 10mm, available in a 30.5cm length or on a 5 metre reel.

This type of hose is no ordinary fuel line hose. It is designed to handle petrol, alcohol-extended petrol or diesel in fully immersed mobile or stationary applications such as the fuel tank.

In-tank fuel systems require specific hose for durable operation which are able to handle petrol on the inside and outside. Gates submersible fuel line hose exceeds the SAE 30R10 rating (the standard for such applications). The hose contains fluoroelastomer (FKM), which resists gas and fuel permeation and retards ageing. They are reinforced with aramid fibre – the fibre used in bullet-proof vests – pound for pound stronger than steel.

Coolants Increasingly Becoming Application Specific ‘Parts’The Issue

When engines were mainly cast iron, the basic inhibitor formulation for European engine coolants was fairly simple. Increasing use of aluminium/various alloys in modern engines requires modified inhibitors to protect from pitting (erosion), corrosion (rusting), and vibration cracking (thin wall castings). Additional challenges arise from much higher operating temperatures for greater fuel efficiency, smaller radiators to reduce weight, increased coolant velocity and extended change intervals. Coolant developments have to keep up!

The Explanation

Until recently, there were just two major OE inhibitor systems specified by European VMs:

• Silicate-basedsystems(whichtendtobenitrite,amineandphosphatefree)

• Non-silicateOrganicAcidTechnology(OAT)basedsystems

Silicate coolants give slightly more protection than traditional coolants, but their performance falls away after three years and the coolant has to be fully replaced. OAT coolants are now specified as original-fill by around 70% of European VMs because they last for five years thus reducing servicing costs.

As with engine oils, coolants are now increasingly application specific and there’s no room for error. For example for BMW Mini, petrol engine versions are serviced with Silicate-based coolants, but diesel versions (engine supplied by Peugeot) with OAT-based.

The THIRD and latest advance in coolants is ‘Advanced OAT’. Comma’s Xstream® G40 with BASF Glysantin is the first Advanced OAT available in the UK aftermarket. Specially developed by BASF for VW Group, Advanced OAT coolants have a new highly reactive additive package with superior anticorrosion properties.

Comma Xstream® G40 meets the VW TL774G Approval, ensuring warranty protection on all VW Group engines from 2005 onwards. That’s well over a million vehicles (243 VW Group models) on UK roads requiring Comma Xstream® G40.

Other VMs are likely to follow with vehicle-specific Advanced OAT formulations.

Note: contemporary coolants have widely differing chemistries and should never be mixed. Mixing severely diminishes or negates their protective properties. Always use the coolant manufacturers’ guide, e.g. the Comma Workshop Application Guide (available online at www.CommaOil.com)

Acid Stratification on Luxury CarsThe Issue

Battery malfunction is seldom a result of a factory defect (less than 7%); driving habits are more commonly the culprit. Heavy accessory power when driving a short distance prevents a periodic fully saturated charge, vital for the longevity of a lead acid battery.

The Explanation

A common cause of battery failure is acid stratification. Electrolyte concentrates on the bottom, causing the upper half of the cell to be acid poor. Think of how the sugar in a hot drink collects on the bottom when unstirred; batteries tend to stratify if kept at low charge (below 80%) and never receive a full charge. Acid stratification reduces the overall performance of the battery.

Figure 1 illustrates a normal battery - acid is equally distributed from top to bottom so the acid concentration around the plates is correct giving good battery performance. Figure 2 shows a stratified battery - acid concentration is low on top, high on the bottom. Low acid concentration limits plate activation, promotes corrosion and reduces performance. High acid concentration on the bottom artificially raises the open circuit voltage, so the battery appears fully charged but provides a low CCA (cold cranking amp). High acid concentration also promotes sulphation and decreases the already low conductivity further. Unchecked, this condition eventually leads to battery failure.

The SolutionAllow a stratified battery to rest for a few days, shaking it or tipping it over helps to correct the problem. A topping charge (bringing a 12 volt battery up to 16 volts for 1-2 hours) also reverses acid stratification and reduces sulphation caused by high acid concentration. Do not let the battery heat up as it will lose excessive electrolyte through hydrogen gassing. Always charge the battery in a well-ventilated room. Accumulation of hydrogen gas can lead to an explosion. Hydrogen is odourless and can only be detected with measuring devices.

Q: My brake caliper is not sliding properly, can you help?A: Ensure the slider bolts are torqued up correctly and evenly. Check the old sliders and slider housing are completely free from rust and dirt, and are lubricated with the grease that is provided with each caliper.

Q: The hand brake lever on my caliper is sticking when I fit it, can you help?A: Ensure the cable end is not distorted or burred. Check the pivot pin is not damaged so that when connected to the lever it moves freely and does not catch.

Q: The brake calipers on both my front wheels are rattling. I can jiggle them slightly with my hands. I have had the brake pads replaced when needed throughout the life of the car, can you help?A: This is a wear sign with so many miles on the car. Over time the bolt holes that attach the caliper to the car wear and get larger. The only cure for the rattling is to replace the calipers.

Q: My car seems to pull to one side when I start braking, can you help?A: This suggests either the piston or slider on one of

the calipers is sticking, causing the opposite caliper to do all the work; the suspect caliper should be removed and inspected by a suitably qualified technician.

Q: My brakes seem to drag when operated, can you help?A: Your calipers need to be mounted square to the disc for proper performance. After the caliper is mounted onto the bracket, apply the brakes while the caliper is being observed - only the pistons and the pads should move.

An ASB bearing is fitted with a magnetic encoder within one of the seals that is able to activate a sensor fitted to the stationery part of the bearing or hub. These can be used in the control of ABS and other systems

The correct identification and fitment of these bearings is essential

The ignition coil is the heart of the ignition system. It is

an electrical transformer, which converts the vehicle’s 12 volt battery supply to the 25-30,000 volts needed to jump the spark plug gap and ignite the fuel-air mixture. Engine environments become increasingly more compact, putting second generation coils under considerable thermal and physical constraints. The necessary voltage and energy must be provided to the proper spark plug at the correct crankshaft angle to ensure accurate and robust combustion.

Regular inspection is vital, whenever spark plugs are replaced (according to the manufacturers recommendations). Use of a poor quality ignition coil can cause damage to the ignition’s electronic system:

- over-consumption of fuel with consequent increased production of C02 (which could lead to an MOT emissions test failure)

- violent misfire or severe engine backfire

- carbon tracking

- damage to the ECU or its peripherals from high current

- premature spark plug wear

- damage, possibly terminal damage of the catalyst on older vehicles (an expensive item under new type approval)

In real terms a coil failure can lead to a vehicle failing to start at all. The cylinder air-fuel mixture does not ignite, but in more modern vehicles the ECU prevents the fuel being injected into the cylinder to avoid pollution of the catalyst.

Aftermarket can be better than OE!

Original coil designs are sometimes improved by aftermarket manufacturers. An example of this is the coil for the Renault Clio 1.4 (245104). Valeo have improved the design by reinforcing the insulation material and resin and modifying the secondary tube in the coil for the passage of the resin. The Valeo upgraded unit lasts way beyond the 1000 hour endurance test, while some other units on the market fall short of this critical 1000 hour mark.

The advice is simple. Fit ignition coils that have at least the same characteristics and mechanics as the Original part. Trust OE brands like Delphi and Valeo.

Arecheaper‘Me-too’productspoorer?

Delphi carried out close inspection of a ‘me-too‘ (a cheap replica) of their Delphi CE10000, a plug top coil cassette for a 4-cylinder application (one coil per cylinder).

They noted that the outer design mimicked their product almost exactly, perhaps giving the impression that what was inside would match similarly. Further investigation, though, revealed the following serious issues (see pictures in inset box):

•The‘me-too’lackedanEMCresistor.It had been replaced with just a diode on the HV side for voltage protection. Resultant interference could affect other electronic parts in the vehicle, creating faults

• Whileprimaryconnectionsinthe‘me- too’ were via PCB (printed circuit board), secondary ground connections were via a wire, a low quality/low reliability solution which could shorten the life of the unit. All connections on the Delphi unit are via PCB

• Overalllowqualitywireconnectionsand ‘messy’ wire locations in the ‘me-too’ suggest manual assembly with all the associated risks, including wires in the epoxy leading to stress concentration and possible epoxy cracks (unit failure)

• Analysisofdwelltimeshowedaslight off-set compared to Delphi’s product, so that knock or misfires could occur (the cheaper unit would not create the intended performance, so it is not an alternative to the Delphi unit)

• Thesecondarycurrentproducedby the cheaper ‘me-too’ was higher than recommended values which would lead to overheating and rapid spark plug wear

• Theburntimewaslower(whichcanlead to misfires).

• Theweightwithbootswastooheavy compared to the OE specification

• Theepoxywasadheringtotheshieldsin the ‘me-too’ which can lead to epoxy cracks. The Delphi unit has shields with an anti-adhesion surface treatment to prevent this

Inevitably poor ignition coil construction in cheap units leads to poor durability, more frequent need for replacement and increased cost for the customer. Complaints and loss of repeat business are issues for a garage fitting poor quality ignition coils.
