Share the TalentYou go to school and university to study all those subjects that you think are absolutely useless and boring only to find out that if the subjects were taught by the amazing one8one team you would have 10 different types of tea (p.60) to drink in Science class, explore fashion (p.38) when it’s time for Geometry, write about movies (p.49) and music (p.16) for English class and try out all sorts of unique sports like American Football (p.56) for PE. Wouldn’t that be a perfect place to learn?

You graduate and finally believe that you are smart enough to challenge the world but does the university you graduate from make a difference? You’d be surprised! Peter Davos (p.42) met with us and shone light onto what it takes to get into the best universities in the world.

Talent can come in different forms and we’ve seen quite a lot of it this month through Art Week in Dubai (p.24) and tasted the masterpieces of culinary talents at Taste of Dubai (p.20) where we met lots of young and happy people. We took many photos which you can view in the magazine (p.22) as well as our facebook page (www.facebook.com/one8one.magazine). Feel free to tag yourself and your friends. Our amazing journalists and photographers are a talented bunch and our photos are cooler than ever with the photography tips we get each month (p.62).

We all have unique talents and that’s what one8one is made for. To show them off. So if you have something to share please send it through to us by emailing us at [email protected] or logging on to our website www.one8one.com.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award Winning Artwork Revealed

Sheikha Maryam bint Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, winner of the 2013 Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award, unveiled her art installation ‘Mirari’

at NYUAD — the first of four sites in the UAE to host the work. Sheikha Maryam bint Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a fourth-year art and design and visual arts student at Zayed University, was selected from 26 applicants as

the recipient of the inaugural Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award.

‘Mirari’ is an installation designed to evoke the effect of a mirage through 30 closely clustered, light-reflective panels. These panels, which are

raised slightly off the ground, appear in three triangular forms — right, equilateral, and isosceles — each repeated 10 times. As the viewer

approaches the work, the form takes on new qualities and an altered relationship with its environment and surroundings. True to the shape-shifting nature of the mirage, the outline of the cluster of triangles can

be altered depending on location, environment, quality of light, day, and season.

“My style is dream-like. The idea of a mirage came to me because you don’t know if it’s real or not,” Sheikha Maryam bint Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan

explained. “I also wanted to create something traditional and characteristic of the UAE, and was inspired by the experience of seeing mirages here. The work can be set up in any location,” she added. “I want to intrigue viewers and incite their curiosity about

what is there in the space.”

Mirari will be exhibited in locations throughout the UAE and will be open for public viewing. The installation can be viewed at: NYUAD’s Downtown Campus from March 12 to April 4; Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah from April 9 to 30; Higher Colleges of

Technology in Al Ruwais from May 5 to 26; and Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort in Abu Dhabi from May 30 to June 16.

Mercedes Launches A Class Hatchbackone8one was invited to the launch event of Mercedes-Benz’s brand new A Class hatchback and I was more than happy to attend the event! The launch was held at the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel and actually spanned two days. While the first day was a normal media event, the second was much more noteworthy. The event organizers had planned an excellent schedule for the press to drive the car across various roads within Dubai. Two drivers were each assigned a car and got to drive around the city, the highway, and (probably the most fun of all) a dynamic road test behind Dubai Festival City.

The car I tested was the A250 which was decked out with all the goodies Mercedes could offer. The car is a huge improvement to the old A classes in every possible way. While it looked like a small and sporty hatchback, you don’t really realise how spacious it is until you actually sit inside. The interior has beautiful stitching which would give any driver a very pleasurable and comfortable experience. The new Marcedes A class is expected to ship later this year and is priced at 135,000 AED.

Al Noor Centre Fun & FairA Friday of complete fun and frolic for kids and adults alike at Al Noor Training Centre for children with special needs.

Lovely weather, enthusiastic volunteers and happy faces flooded the campus making it a heartwarming experience.

Numerous activities surround you as soon as you step in the

campus. The parking lot and frontyard were transformed into a street market, where you could buy anything from clothes

and shoes to food items and paintings. The entertainment was non-stop with kid games, play area, popcorn and candyfloss-

all at the disposal of children. A small stage complete with colorful lights and a DJ playing hit numbers was like the focal

point of activity.

The interior of the school was transformed into a mini mall, with shops selling branded items at super discounted rates.

The courtyard was under art attack! An art competition was held for the youngsters where kids sprawled across the

courtyard painting, drawing, coloring and creating their master piece.

If you missed the event this time, do make it to the next one! If you want to enjoy it to the fullest, attend it as a volunteer and

it shall be a day well spent.

Locally booming Egyptian cellist, Marwa Sharaky, has been in Dubai for the past

four years and has been making quite the impression on the musical community.

Marwa started playing the cello back when she was about six or seven, because

her mother wished for her to register in the arts academy. Before that, she had not

even known that a thing such as the cello existed, nevertheless what it was. Aside from

her knowledge of instruments such as the violin, piano and flute, she knew nothing of

other musical forms of expression through a material medium. Her experience with music

came from playing the piano for a few years, but she was very young at the time. She recalls

practicing scales, and how she detested it.

Marwa Sharaky

Page 15: Smart Issue

Not only is she musical, but so is her whole family. Marwa recalls having a piano at home which was initially her mother’s to practice on, but Marwa didn’t continue with lessons. She said: “I think I became interested in playing the piano even though I didn’t know what I was playing and didn’t even know how to read notes. However, I loved to experiment with weird melodies and pick up whatever I could by ear. I think Mom recognized that I had an interest in music, so she signed me up for classes.”

Once Marwa had applied to the arts academy and had been accepted, she had the choice to play the flute or the cello, and had preferred the flute. However, her mother convinced her otherwise, and said, “It’s a new instrument and a great chance to try out something different and see what it’s like.” She did not hold a lot of interest, or liking for the cello in the beginning but it all changed when she began to attend orchestra rehearsals and performing in concerts. It is now, as she says, her “most beloved instrument.”

When questioned about why she was only given the options of the flute or the cello, she replied saying that the academy gave them those options based on finger length rather than aptitude. The academy looks into how you respond to tones, semitones and quartertones. Eventually, they tell you which instruments seem adequate for your certain mental and physical capacity. Whilst in the academy, it took her a while to adjust. Beforehand, Marwa could not read notes. She recalls her teacher forcing her to practice reading notes and having to play at the same time, but she handled it, as it was a requirement for the academy.

At one stage of her life Marwa experienced a sudden transition moving from Egypt to Dubai. For her the transition was not easy- it was “scary” as she puts it. She was very confused about –everything. After a few months she made new friends and everything became easier.

One of the larger transitions was her introduction to the ARBSM examination system where she will be sitting her grade 8 exam, which is the highest level, in a couple of months. She states, “Speaking of music lessons, I think the most important thing, when working with someone towards an exam or a goal, is that you are comfortable and can communicate well. It isn’t about how good the teacher is or how good you are.”

“Working towards an exam is difficult, but quite manageable,” she says. Marwa takes into account the amount of stress she may experience during a performance. She believes that her exams were best performed when she simply went in to enjoy herself--not to perform and get a grade. “In the end, you need to be able to tolerate criticism, because if you are allowed to play, then people are allowed to comment on it and tell you what’s right and what’s wrong”, she says. The stance she takes on it is that eventually, it is summed up as constructive criticism rather than criticism that is meant to bring you down.

Marwa does not wish to limit herself in terms of the music she listens to, mainly because she understands that for one to be a good musician they have to expose themselves to as many styles of music as possible. “I listen to many genres actually: classical of course, rock, there was a phase of symphonic metal some time ago, and recently through my studies, I’ve also begun exploring new genres I wasn’t even aware of things like minimalism, expressionism and world music -the list keeps expanding every day. Believe me!”

Marwa Sharaky has large future aspirations. She wishes to get a degree in business management, and start her own business that manufactures and sells musical instruments. “I would not agree with people who would pursue a certain path just for the money. Ultimately, you have to be passionate and love what you do, to be able to get up everyday and work hard, and when you fail, get up move on as many times as you need to. You have to love what you do to be able to do that, because if you do not have that passion I don’t think you will have the energy to get up again if, God forbid, you are let down or fail.”

MUSIC

Cast: Bryan Cranston, Ben McKenzie, Eliza Dushku

This movie is like none of the others in the DCAU (detective comic’s animated universe). It shares a few traits with its live action counterpart which is that of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. Its animation style relates to the Japanese anime. This movie delivers a straight foreword cinematic punch line to the nature of the original story arc. So whether you are a fan of the series or not it won’t disappoint.

Cast: Shia LaBeouf, David Morse, Carrie-Anne Moss

This story revolves around a teenager (Shia LaBouf) under house arrest and his widowed mother (Carrie-Anne Moss). He starts to observe the ongoings of daily life through his window. This movie was loosely based of the Alfred Hitchcock classic film “Rear Window”. The story takes an immense turn when our hero witnesses a brutal murder which is where the thrill begins once he suspects his next door neighbor (David Morse). The film has won three Teen Choice Awards and has a lot in store for its viewers, especially when you see this is not just your typical run of the mill slasher film.

Cast: Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, Selma Blair

A demon ironically the supernatural superhero in this movie, known as Hellboy, saved from the Nazis who conjured him, in the care of Professor Broom, the founder of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense(BPRD) hones to a fine point his physical and paranormal powers while he develops a sense of empathy and a desire to do good. He grows up to work for BPRD to keep the world safe from paranormal threats and the forces of darkness. He works with a psychic, amphibious humanoid named Abe Sapien, and a third BPRD member Liz Sherman, who has pyrokinetic abilities.

Album Reviews

16

This is a classic Dido! ‘Girl Who Got Away’ is what ‘Safe Trip Home’ should have been. This album will take you back to that euphoric and chilled feeling you felt within the first seconds of firing up ‘No Angel’ and ‘Life for Rent’. Here Dido is as mellow and gentle as she gets, yet also cold and ruthless in some places (‘End of Night’ specifically).

Many call this record as her comeback but I prefer to call it her awakening; ‘Girl Who Got Away’ will remind you why, in the first place, the world fell in love with Dido.

Those who are not familiar with this beautiful solo artist from the UK should give this album a listen when they want to relax, laze around or start off the morning at a slower-than-usual pace.

by basma abdou

by stereohead

Firstly, this album is a must have if you are looking for music to go with your deep moments of self-reflection. This Brit band add an edge to their synthesized pop music. Do not

expect anything cheerful or merry, in fact, if anything this band has a kind of gloomy allure to them that you will not

be able to let go of. With a feel of a mix between Placebo and Muse and a hint of a calmer Adam Lambert coupled with a

more excited XX. This duo has managed to combine deep lyrics with trance-like beats and morph the combination into

a catchy, captivating tune that will get you singing along. This is the perfect album if you are relaxing after a long day

or need time to think about some issues.

Hurts

‘Exile’

Dido

‘Girl Who Got Away ’

This album is nothing short of what is expected which makes it unique in its own way; with Matt Tucks’ vocals and

Padges’ insane guitar solos followed by Michael ‘Moose’ Thomas’ heavy drumbeats. Although this is a metal album there are a few moments in each song that contain a little

bit of a soft touch, slowly transitioning into the beastly tunes we know and love. What this album has to offer is

nothing short of surprise including a song which follows up to their 2006 claim to fame ‘Tears Don’t Fall’ which is

entitled ‘Tears Don’t Fall (part 2)’. This album, as some might see it, has added an aggressive edge to their sound

and although this is work in progress, hopefully it won’t be their last.

Out & About

Andrea BocelliLive in

Abu Dhabi

by basma abdou

Andrea Bocelli graced his fans at the du arena at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The beloved Italian singer performed a wonderful two-hour concert that portrayed great talent, simply enchanted the audience with his performance which resulted in an extended standing ovation.

The Tenor master performed some of his greatest classic numbers such as ‘Time to Say Goodbye’, ‘Mamma’, ‘Brindisi’, ‘I Found My Love in Portofino’ as well as some songs from his new album. However, the highlight of the whole concert was the performance with the late legend Edith Piaf where Bocelli performed a rendition of the world famous “La vie en rose”. He performed hand in hand with Piaf projected on the 3 jumbo screens surrounding the stage.

The whole concert was purely in Italian except for that one duet. However, Piaf was not the only lady that accompanied Bocelli. Paola Sanguinetti, and Div4s (a Soprano group) also accompanied the legend in many numbers. With an impressive orchestra of 70 people and a 60 piece choir, Bocelli’s pure sound did not struggle to emerge with absolute beauty.

All in all, it was amazing concert that left the whole house hungry for more. Even if people did not speak Italian, they were still moved by his remarkable voice. Even after a long standing ovation at the end of the night, Bocelli returned to perform four more songs in order to please his fans. Eventually, he ended the night with the most famous “Time to Say Goodbye” before one more Italian song.

It was a concert filled with pure delight and joy that definitely left all the members of the audience overjoyed and lighthearted.

“Even if people did not speak Italian, they were

still moved by his remarkable voice.”

Food! Oh Glorious Food!

writing by Natasha Aguiar & Mohammed Al Qamzi

photos by Basma ABdou & Anton rodionov

Foodies of the city flocked to the Media City Amphitheatre for a weekend extravaganza filled with food, drinks, and even more food! That’s right, Taste of Dubai came back and it was GLORIOUS!

What’s there to do you ask? Would you like some gourmet mini burgers? Right this way. Drinks? Pick a brand. Cooking classes? Asian food, baking, you name it! It was there!

But what’s so great about cooking classes you ask? Why, cooking classes courtesy of the Kenwood Cookery School is nothing to sneeze at of course! We made our own noodles and it was fabulous! Another fun experience was being blindfolded by our waiters at the “Dine in the Dark” exhibit. In addition to being blindfolded, we needed to figure out what it is we were tasting and name 30 ingredients. Yes, it was as fun (and messy) as it sounds.

In addition to food, music lovers were treated to local bands playing Top 40 hits all weekend long. The event was half concert really, it was quite fun! One complaint though; three days per year is simply not enough. We here at one8one are giant fans of this amazing event and we already can’t wait till next year.

Art Week

Page 27: Smart Issue

Art Dubai It was that time of the year again, Art Dubai was scheduled to open at the end of March and crowds of Art lovers flocked to the beautiful galleries of

Madinat Arena. Twenty-eight galleries made their Art Dubai debut this year, with celebrated international names such as GAGProjects (Adelaide/

Berlin), Yvon Lambert (Paris) and Almine Rech Gallery (Paris/Brussels), joining returning favourites such as Sfeir-Semler (Beirut / Hamburg),

Alexander Gray Associates (New York), and The Third Line (Dubai). Highlights included Banu Cennetoglu’s installation of bound volumes

cataloging a collection of daily newspapers from 20 Arabic speaking countries at Rodeo Gallery (Istanbul), a curated booth of works by women

artists including Louise Bourgeois and Jumana Manna at CRG Gallery (New York), and photographic works by Marina Abramović at Galerie

Krinzinger (Vienna).

As expected, Art Dubai has outdone itself yet again. I couldn’t help, but get lost in the white corridors of the exhibition halls, being helplessly drawn

to yet another art piece, at times spending a good chunk of time just staring at the works. Check out the many photos and see for yourself, for

a picture is worth a thousand words.

Design Daysphotos and writing by Swati Kalani

The Second Annual Design Days Dubai had high expectations arising on the smash hit first run last year. One trip to the exhibition and all

doubts cleared out. It was as good as (if not better) last year’s Design Days Dubai. It was simply awe inspiring to see the innovative design pieces

that ranged from paintings, lamps, tables, chairs, interior accessories, installations and wall art. What was so marvelous about every design

piece on display was the fact that they were not only aesthetically astounding but also absolutely functional.

Design Days Dubai 2013 showcased works of more than 135 designers and 29 galleries, under one single roof at a picturesque location of Downtown

Dubai, right under the massive Burj Khalifa. I wished Design Days Dubai was open for a few more days. The highlight for me was the fact that I got to meet, talk and have a picture with my favorite Emirati designer Khalid

Shafar. An artistic experience I shall cherish.

Sikkaphotos and writing by Swati Kalani

It was an intriguing juxtaposition of contemporary art on the textured walls of Bastakiya. The Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood was, literally, painted red with

the Sikka Art Fair’s red wooden boxes. The holistic experience of art in context with the historical time travel as I walked through the narrow lanes (sikkas) in

Bastakiya, was soul stirring. Bastakiya is a historical site in Bur Dubai comprising of old restored housing units separated by narrow winding lanes (sikkas),

surrounded by the creek, temple, mosque, dubai museum and meena bazaar. The beautiful houses, courtyards and sikkas displayed new contemporary art works

and installations of over 70 Emirati and U.A.E. based artists. This 3rd Sikka Art Fair was open for ten whole days, 14th-24th March, and was made interactive

with special projects, panel discussions, live music and entertainment, film screenings, performances and so much more.

For once I did not mind getting lost in the labyrinth of sikkas and courtyards and midget doors, because wherever I wound up, I was surrounded by amazing and

thought provoking art. Each day at Sikka Art Fair was a different experience. The central courtyard was a convergence point for the closing night. Musicians were performing on stage, there were delicious snacks and drinks making rounds for all of us who sat there beneath the open sky and watched the stars in the warm evening on our bean bags. We were biding adieu to the wonderful Sikka Art Fair

2013 and looking forward to the next one in the year to come.

movie at IHC campus this mid-term break any day of the week between 12:00 and

4:00 PM.

Now, what is IHC?

International Horizons College is licensed and accredited by the UAE Ministry of

Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR). The college is an independent

and international undergraduate institution committed to fulfilling high standards of academic excellence and

relevancy to the 21st century.

The institution provides high academically performing students from

the MENASA region with an American style college education in arts, sciences

and pre-professional studies and serves as a pathway for transfer to elite universities in the United States as well

as regional institutions. International Horizons College balances specialized

and general education in order that their students achieve a strong foundation for

widely varying careers in business and industry, the professions, public service,

teaching, and fine arts.

IHC prepares students during two years of study in Dubai for transfer to universities

in the US. Preparation starts in the Freshman year at IHC, when students

work with academic counselors to develop a clear academic plan. The Academic Plan

is based on students’ natural aptitude and interests. The Academic Plan lists

the ideal universities and their specific requirements for each student.

Their 2+2 model allows students to save money, gain more academic preparation and be closer to home by completing the

first two years of the bachelors degree in Dubai and then moving on to the final

two years at elite universities in the US or other regions.

What is IHC Dubai’s 2 + 2 Model? The college offers the first (2) years of the university curriculum known in the US as General Education and preparation for the major. This curriculum is accepted by all four-year compre-hensive universities in America. After transfer from IHC the student then takes the second (2) years of courses in their major field and graduates with a bachelors degree. 2 years at IHC + 2 years at top US university is taken in a seamless manner.

What is the process for students to complete their final two years of their bachelors degrees at top universities in the US? Do students get any assistance with their US University and Visa applications?Every IHC student has their own individualized career and education plan prepared with the assistance of the counselor and college faculty as well. Once the student selects the university or universities they want to apply to, assistance is also provided in completing the transfer documents and supported with recommendations from our own faculty, all of whom have Ph.Ds from American universities. IHC also has a close working relationship with the US Consulate in Dubai.

Can you explain the significance of having all US faculty from top universities?IHC is selected faculty only with Ph.Ds from the US because of three fundamental reasons:

1. The goal of most of our graduates is to go to top universities in the U.S. and learning from professors from those institutions assures them of comparable instruction and a good refer-ence to go to those schools.

2. Academic quality and rigor of instruction is very important in an honors college like IHC as the education level and experience of the faculty is first and foremost consideration for quality.

3. The curriculum is American university curriculum and we believe it is best taught byAmerican Ph.D. faculty.

Can you please tell us about the different sustainability initiatives at IHC Dubai and how these benefit students?1. IHC is a paperless environment and this teaches students conservation and stewardship.

2. IHC does not have vending machines, unhealthy foods, etc. like many schools.

3. IHC uses e-textbooks which save not only on paper but make learning more effective as all of the different technology tools of the college interface with the ebooks and students gain a tremendous advantage for future education as well as career advantages learning in this way.

4. All IHC students take our course in environmental sciences and they are more aware of practices in their own lives, homes and community for a more sustainable world.

5. The school practices energy conservation and the students are getting involved in projects like recycling and going on field trips to the community to study air and water quality, etc.

6. IHC is a tobacco and litter free campus.

What extracurricular activities, clubs & communities can students join while studying at IHC Dubai? The school is new and is still forming many of its clubs and activities. In the coming fall se-mester we will offer sports clubs, music groups, theatre, student newspaper, film series, and community services programs for the students.

Dr. Michael Dobe Sr.

PresidentDr. Dobe has over two decades of leadership experience that spans roles within the global financial services industry, the U.S. military and international higher education. Serving most recently as a senior executive at Prince Mohammed University, he managed a large and diverse projects portfolio. Dr. Dobe has extensive experience in introducing leading technology into emerging markets and has a vast network of global leaders in the tech-nology and education sectors. He has taught undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences and graduate students in Educa-tional Technology in the College of Educa-tion. Dr. Dobe holds a BA from St. Anselm College and MA and Ph.D. degrees from

Rutgers University.

At IHC, Dr. Dobe has led the college’s effort to be recognized as a leader in global technol-ogy implementation. He sits on several key advisory boards for leading companies in the GCC and regionally. Through Dr. Dobe’s leadership, IHC will serve as the case study for regional and international universities to develop a model for a highly collaborative

and inspiring academic environment.

Can you please tell us something about the history of IHC Dubai?IHC was founded on July 19, 2011 as an American curriculum business and liberal arts college. The founding investors and members of the Board of Trustees had a vision to create a college that would make university education in the US and the West more affordable and accessible in the Middle East North Africa South Asia (MENASA) region. IHC’s 2+2 Academic Model enables students to complete the first two years of bachelors degree in Dubai and the final two

years at elite US universities.

We went through an extensive search to recruit the most qualified and suitable faculty from the US who had the experience of teaching at elite universities. Our inaugural class was inducted in January 2013 and are currently half way through their spring term. We are now accepting

applications for our September 2013 class (Fall Intake).

What are the different majors offered at IHC Dubai? As we follow the curriculum of American universities, all students go through the basic liberal arts program, selecting from one of our four areas of emphasis (Arts & Humanities, Social Sci-

ences, Business, and Math and Science).

The flexibility of the American university education allows students the opportunity to decide their majors after first hand experience of university life and gaining a better understanding of themselves and their career interests. This is a major benefit with the US system compared to most other higher education systems globally, which tend to force students into narrow choices early on and there is not much of chance if any to change one’s mind. IHC students will select their majors with counselor assistance by the end of the freshmen year of study in order

to prepare for transfer applications in the fall semester of the sophomore year.

What are the key benefits for a student to come to IHC Dubai? The key benefits a for a student to come to IHC Dubai are:

Academic - Students have the opportunity to gain admission to top US universities after com-pleting the first two years in Dubai.

Financial - Students can save substantially compared to attending all four years of university in the US

Family/Social - Students can mature and take university courses in smaller class sizes. Parents have the benefit of having their children closer to home for an additional two years.

Facilities/ College Experience - We are centrally located in the Business Bay area with close access to Business Bay metro station and all amenities such as Dubai Mall, Mall of Emirates,

World Trade Center and Jumeirah Park and Beach.

What are the various technologies which are being used in and out of the classroom to improve the academic life?

IHC strongly believes in equipping our classrooms with the latest technology in higher edu-cation so that our students can benefit from it. We have partnered with the best technology providers such as Steelcase, Polycom and Google to make sure we provide a highly interactive

and collaborative classroom. We support a wide range of devices from Apple to Samsung.

All our students are given access to these technologies and use e-textbooks to support our Mis-sion to be a paperless and sustainable environment.

Can you describe the student diversity at IHC Dubai and how it benefits students academi-cally?

Our experienced recruitment team has been travelling all over the world to ensure we have a truly global classroom. We have so far visited China, Japan, Morocco, Turkey, India, Pakistan and in the near future will be travelling to all the GCC countries to recruit top students for our

classrooms.

The vision of the founders was to create a pool of highly qualified and intelligent students from primarily the MENASA region so that they can share their global experiences and cul-

tures with students in the UAE.

We are not all born with the same body shape or the one we wish we had, but that

doesn’t mean we can’t flatter our figure. Do you wish you could elongate your legs or

create the curves you were not quite blessed with? Follow these great tips to know which

clothes suit your body.

Before you go shopping, you need to know what shape your body is.

by hayla ghazal

RectangleIn order to enhance your waist, you will need to wear form fitting clothes such as tube top dresses. You may also want to add a dark, wide belt. You can create the illusion of curves by wearing a puffy dress or jumpsuit that clinches your waist.

Inverted triangleThe secret to dressing this body type is to balance the lower body with the upper body while not failing to show off the well-defined waist. This can be done by choosing clothes that will enlarge your lower half. For that, you should go for cargo pants, jeans with whiskering at the hips or pants with embellished pockets. You can also make your bust appear smaller by wearing dark colored tops, tailored shirts and jackets or tops with nipping at the waist. Your body shape also allows you to play with skirt lengths.

Page 41: Smart Issue

TriangleTo compliment your figure, you may want to wear tops that will add volume to the upper half of your body and create a balanced appearance. You can choose between shirts with fitted waists, wide V-necks or U-necks, off the shoulder or ones with detailing around the bust and shoulders.

HourglassYou have the body most ladies want! Wide belts over both shirts and dresses are the perfect way to show off that waist you have. You can also add some volume to your upper and lower body but be sure to maintain balance. Have some fun and try different skirt lengths.Oval

If you have this body shape, your aim is to draw attention towards your shoulders and face as well as to create the illusion of a longer body. This can be achieved by wearing earrings, necklaces, loose fitting clothes, low necklines, un-tucked tops, and straight skirts. Try to avoid belts, fabrics with large patterns and pleats.

Girls

Page 42: Smart Issue

40

Just like women, men come in all shapes and sizes. There are also certain ways for

men to dress that will flatter their figures. To be sure that you don’t attract attention

to your physical flaws, you may want to de-emphasize those certain features and that is achieved successfully by knowing the shape

of your body well!

by hayla ghazal

Inverted triangleIf you have a wide chest and shoulders, a narrow waist and hips as well as big muscles then you have an inverted triangle shaped body. The key to dressing well, no matter what shape you are, is balance. Wear wider leg jeans; avoid black denim as it would shrink your already small bottom half. Wear trousers in a lighter color than your tops half to add proportion and always untuck your shirt. Do not wear vertical stripes, that are the same color from head to toe or black denim as it would make you look much smaller on the bottom.

AverageIf you are neither tall, nor short; not heavy or thin and if you don’t have big muscles, you are the average man. Luckily for you, most clothing will fit you. However, to give the illusion of broader shoulders, look for patterns or detailing across the shoulders and light colored shirts.

Page 43: Smart Issue

TriangleYou have a triangle shaped body if you have a heavy bottom, a chest narrower than your hips and a sloping shoulder line. Look for dark denim, detailing on the shoulder, padded blazers and light colored shirts to create balance. Remember to avoid tight clothing.

TallIf you are in this category, shop for shirts with horizontal lines as they will help you appear more substantial. You can still wear vertical stripes, but you should consider ones that are large. Avoid monochrome outfits as they’ll make you look like a vertical straight line. Instead, wear a different color top and bottom.

ShortIf you are short, it is best to avoid horizontal lines. Vertical lines, especially thin ones close together, are a must. Plain colored shirts are fine, especially dark colors that have a slimming effect. Unlike tall men, you may want to wear monochrome instead of a different color top and bottom.

OvalIf you have an overall round appearance and a large stomach, then you are an oval. The key to dressing up an oval shaped body is to tone down the stomach either by illusion or directing attention elsewhere. To look your best at all times, go for low rise trousers and jeans, V necks, vertical stripes and monochrome. In order not to attract attention to your top half, avoid patterns as well as thick jackets that will only add weight to your frame.

Peter Davos

You have many interesting degrees from a lot of elite universities; tell me a bit about that:After high school, I ended up enrolling in Johns Hopkins and double majoring in Classics and Political Science. I graduated as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, for which you have to be in the top 10% of your class to even be considered for membership. I spent my junior year in college abroad at the London School of Economics, completing the General Course in International Relations, which was the most fulfilling academic experience of my life. The students at the LSE were all incredibly smart and well-rounded, which was rare to find, in my experience.

After graduating from Johns Hopkins, I then completed a one year Master of Studies Degree at Oxford University in History. I was only 21 when I completed my BA, so I thought, why not. For a history lover, like myself, Oxford was just about the best place in the world to study. I loved the traditions, the architecture, the quads, the balls, the museums – it was a dream. I would be riding around town in my sub fusc (black gown and white bow tie) on my little bike and it was magical. It was also very demanding.

I then worked for a while before going back to school yet again, this time to study Real Estate at Harvard. The hardest part about Harvard was getting in, the rest was a breeze. I received over half a dozen university-wide, national, and international scholarships and prizes while there, but my greatest achievement was being selected Marshal of my class, an honor that allowed me to literally graduate first in my class, as the Marshal leads the procession of degree recipients during the graduation ceremony. That was pretty cool, along with receiving the school’s top Real Estate Prize (the Colloredo-Mansfeld Prize for Real Estate Studies), which allowed me to have my name engraved on the library wall. I can’t wait to bring my kids to the library to literally show them my name on the wall, I am looking forward to that.

The last piece of formalized education I completed was a Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA, which consisted of eight post-graduate classes relevant to what I am doing now – helping students get into college. My educational experiences played such an instrumental role in shaping my life, it is incredibly satisfying to help other students go through the same process. I didn’t have much help, as neither of my parents were college educated, but now I am in a position to help others and it feels great.

Introduction: If determination was a person, I think it could be called Peter

Davos. Recently we got a chance to meet up with this extraordinary man, who

has degrees from some of the world’s most prestigious universities. He told us about his educational journey and what

motivated him to take the roads he took. At a relatively young age, Peter has already

achieved what most people spend their whole lives trying to get to. He now runs

his own business in Dubai where he helps students get into their dream universities

and follow their passions and goals.

Page 46: Smart Issue

During high school, what did it take from you to get accepted into a top university like Johns Hopkins?Lots of hard work, motivation, and more than a little bit of luck. Too many students today have a sense of entitlement; they think just because they want something, they should get it. Well, if you want to get into a top school, you have to work really, really hard AND still get lucky. The only reason I was able to get into a school like Johns Hopkins was that I was doing college level work as a high school sophomore. In addition to taking classes at Harvard, I took several AP courses and scored really well on the AP exams, in addition to scoring really well on several SAT II subject tests. My SAT scores and high school GPA were just average for accepted applicants. That is another great thing about university admissions – you can’t simply buy your way in. Some argue that possessing a degree from an elite university is the ultimate status symbol, because it can’t simply be purchased. I wouldn’t go that far – as I know plenty of graduates from elite universities whom you would not describe as successful and were only mediocre students while there – but there is something to be said for earning your way in.

To most people Harvard is just something they hear about in movies, so does Harvard really live up to its reputation? And what was your experience at it like? What was special about studying at Harvard? There is this misconception among the public – and even some Harvard students – that once you are a Harvard student you are set for life. This is not true. While getting in is the hardest part of the whole process, you still need to stay hungry and tenacious in pursuing your studies and subsequent

employment opportunities. Harvard will help open the doors, but you will have to walk through them.

As a graduate student at Harvard, I felt really sorry for the other students who just cooped themselves up in the library and didn’t take advantage of the absolutely amazing opportunities the universities offered. The concerts, the Hasty Pudding theatrical plays, the football games, the libraries, the museums, the guest lecturers, the parties, cross-registering at other schools, etc. They totally missed out on the best part, as the classes weren’t at all that hard, in my opinion. Everyone says the hardest part of Harvard is getting in and I agree. The most special part about studying at Harvard was feeling like you belonged to this amazing community that spanned thousands of students and hundreds of years. We were part of this exclusive club that everybody wanted to get into, but couldn’t. It’s a link that is stronger than any other I have experienced.

What, in your opinion, is the key to success?Loving what you do is the only thing to do. I think different periods of your life brings different challenges, but the type of person that is intent on succeeding will always succeed, regardless if the challenge is academic, professional, or physical.

How do you think your studies affected your personality? My personality affected my studies, not the other way around.

Did your studies have a negative impact on your social life? I always had a very active social life

throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies. As an undergraduate, I was a member of a fraternity and lived in a fraternity house. My fraternity house roommate ended up graduating top of his class from Johns Hopkins Medical School, after he passed on attending Harvard Medical School and is now an MD/PhD. Having a great social life and being a top student are not mutually exclusive at all. As a graduate student at Harvard, I was president of several student organizations, some of which had a purely social mission. It was not hard to get work done and have a great time at the same time.

What were your hobbies during high school? Did you continue having the same hobbies during your university years?I was very athletic and loved to play basketball, American football, and compete in the shotput and discus in high school, though I did not play competitively in college. I participated in intramural sports in college, but not at the varsity level. I also participated in Model UN and volunteered at a local hospital and museum. You really don’t need to be active in more than 3-4 extracurriculars.

How did you manage to balance between these activities and your studies?Effective time management skills are critical to being a successful college student. When you are in high school, your schedule is highly rigid and your day is structured. Attendance is taken and your parents get a call if you start skipping assignments or start taking days off schools. College is exactly the opposite. You are responsible for yourself and no one will come looking for you if you start shirking your responsibilities. They will just place you on academic probation.

Page 47: Smart Issue

by FARAH HAMDY

What did you base your choice of majors and fields of study on?I pursued my passion. Each student should do so as well. If you hate what you study, you will not be a good student, and you will not be motivated to succeed. There is this major misconception, particularly among parents of students in Dubai, that there is no value in a Liberal Arts Degree, that one should only study Business, Engineering, or Medicine. If you go to Harvard, for example, you can’t study Business, Architecture, or Medicine as an undergraduate, and Ivy League colleges, in general, focus on providing their students with a liberal education, which promotes the ability to think creatively and critically.

What was your dream job as a child?I wanted to be Willy Wonka.

Who’s your role model? My father. He taught me that by sheer determination and force of will, you can achieve anything. He taught me that there were no excuses on the way to success and that failure was never an option.

When you first started your college education, what did you envision yourself doing now, in 2013?I had absolutely no idea back then, life was about the journey and not the destination. It still is.

How did your move to Dubai happen?I was recruited by a fellow graduate student from Harvard to help her run her company based here in Dubai. I cannot emphasize enough that Harvard’s greatest strength is its alumni network, we used to jokingly call it the Crimson Mafia.

What led you to taking a course in college counseling and opening your own college counseling company?I’ve always loved education and had always been active as an alumni interviewer and as a member in my respective alumni societies. I had started counseling other relatives and students at an early age and this interest gradually grew into a passion and then a business. I was making a very good salary before, but I did not love what I was doing and I wanted to make a positive change in people’s lives on a daily basis, so I saved my money, expanded my knowledge on college admissions counseling, and opened my current office. I have no doubt that this is what I will be doing for the rest of my life. It gives me tremendous joy to help students when they come to my office confused and overwhelmed, but leave calm, with big smiles on their face, and at ease.

I know you received a lot of great awards, which one do you feel you most deserved? The Alumni Council Book Prize “Unsung Hero” Award from Harvard. I really earned that one, as I really worked hard at advocating for the students, organizing university-wide events, putting together a career fair, being a leader on campus, and bringing students from different degree programs together.

Most people’s problem in becoming successful is not that they are not capable but is that they’re not motivated, what motivated you to work so hard? This is so true. One of the reasons I received so many scholarships and prizes at Harvard was I was paying my own way through graduate school. At a cost of over $100,000 for two years, you bet I was motivated to work hard and secure funding from any source I could to help defray these costs. I was very tenacious when it came to pursuing scholarships and prizes because every $10,000 I was awarded with was another $10,000 that didn’t have to come out of my pocket. Also, my parents never went to college. My dad has an elementary school education. So when I had the opportunity to study – an opportunity that my father didn’t have because he was working since he was twelve years old - I understood it and appreciated it. I knew how fortunate I was and it motivated me, so I was not about to treat university as some type of extended holiday. I had a great time, but I also got my work done. Going to college is easy; waking up every morning to work on a construction site is tough. If you keep things in perspective and realize exactly how fortunate you are to have the opportunities that you do have, you will be fine. Never take anything for granted. Ever.

This month is all about Android and the flagship handsets that we all cannot

wait to get our hands on. Samsung Galaxy S4 has been announced and while the specs are impressive and the phone is probably the fastest in

the market, many are puzzled at why Samsung went conservative with the

design aspect of the phone. Here is where HTC comes in... read on for more.

So the Galaxy S4 has been announced not too long ago and what is the feedback? Well, for starters, the phone is not in the market yet, so not much can be said except from previewing it.

On the surface, this phone has not changed much, it looks very similar to the last year’s Galaxy SIII; yes, it’s thinner and lighter and the texture has been tweaked a bit, however, should you see one on the street, you would have a hard time differentiating between the two.

Looks aside, this phone features a slightly bigger screen, Quad core 1.7 GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 16/32/64 GB of internal storage (expandable up to 64 GB), LTE and Android Jellybean 4.2.2. The stand out features are ‘Air Gestures’ which basically lets you hover over the screen without physically touching it and flip through pages; ‘Air View’ gives you an option to preview files just by hovering over them with a finger; Smart Pause’ and ‘Smart Scroll’ that supposedly detect your eye movement and pause the video (if you look away) or scroll up and down the pages as you progress.

Overall, this looks like a good upgrade, however, if you are looking for a total overhaul of a device, then you better look elsewhere.

Samsung Galaxy S4

HTC has always been known for its attention to industrial design of their devices. This company is probably the only one making truly competitive Android hardware

since the Nexus One back in 2010. This year, HTC takes it to another level with a truly beautiful device, HTC One. With a 1080 x 1920 display (crazy dense 468 ppi), Quad core

processor, 2GB RAM, LTE and the all-new HTC Sense 5 (Jellybean 4.1.2) this phone is all you could wish for in Android.

The hardware (super-light aluminum unibody and glass) is on par of what you’d normally expect from Apple; the 4 MP (?) camera uses ‘UltraPixels’, which are

basically larger pixels that are supposed to capture more light. One of the other features is ‘Zoe’ , which lets you take short snippets (3 seconds long) that you can

share with others.

Overall, this phone is probably the best Android handset in the market as of today. It’s got LTE , insane processor speeds, eye-mesmerising screen technology, great polished

software and an incredibly beautiful industrial design that , finally, gives Apple a run for its money.

What is Teens Talk? Teens talk is the ONLY talk show for the youth. Teens

talk is an online TV show, in which teens from all around the UAE have the opportunity to discuss, relate to and

receive advice about common and popular topics amongst teenagers, without sharing identities. The anonymity of

the whole scenario creates a safe yet fun environment for hosts as well as viewers. For the first time in years, the

youth have a voice to project their thoughts and ideas on today’s frequent issues in the life of a typical teenager.

Whether its family problems at home, or the usual drama with friends and teachers at school, Teens Talk is the

talk show where these problems and dilemmas are not ignored, but acknowledged.

Who is it created for? Teens talk was created to empower and assist teenagers (13-17) and parents alike. It has become apparent that teenagers within the region have become discouraged from sharing their thoughts and ideas, almost as though the youth of the UAE “don’t have a voice”. Although the majority of teenagers and parents have friends and peers they can turn to, it is sometimes hard to reach out to the ones we love in order to ask for help or advice. This is where Teens Talk becomes a great tool for teenagers and parents of the UAE.

Oblivion takes place in the year 2073, after earth has been completely destroyed by an Alien invasion, and Tom Cruise plays a marine commander who goes on a mission to extract Earth’s vital resources, and through his mission he triggers a series of events that make him doubt everything he learnt about the war and its aftermath.

The Empire’s only hope is in the hands of a heretic thief, Shai. Shai is a forger, a con artist, who uses complex magic

to rewrite the history of an object which can be anything from furniture to clothes to art, allowing her to flawlessly copy and re-crate the object. The Empire finds people like

Shai a heretical abomination, so when she is caught in the palace stealing a priceless pice of art, she is offered a

chance to free her self from being condemned to death. She ‘a heretical abomination’ is the Empire’s desperate last

hope at an attempt, through her skill as a forger, to crate a new soul for the emperor, who is in a catatonic state, due

to an assassination attempt. The state of the emperor has been hidden by the fraction, by the death of this wife. If the

emperor doesn’t emerge after his mourning, the fraction will fall to chaos.

Shai has the 100 day mourning period to construct the emperor a new soul, to do this she has to uncover the

Emperor’s truest nature, and a way to exploit it to gain her freedom. Confined to a dirty chamber she strives to complete

this impossible task and is guarded and surrounded by people who hate her, kept in line by politicians and trapped

in the chamber by a blood seal at the door. All the while time is running out as she sets to forge the most intricate master piece she has ever attempted - a soul. All the while deducing

the motivations of the people around her, and using it to formulate her plan to escape.

The Kane Chroniclesby Rick Riordan

The Kane Chronicles are based on Egyptian mythology, the books are set in modern day United States and United Kingdom, and are narrated alternatively by the two sibling protagonists Sadie and Carter Kane. Riordan introduces us to the siblings who haven’t seen each other since their mother’s death. While Sadie lived with her grandparents in London, as far away from Egyptian mythology as possible, Carter traveled the world with their father, the famous Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane. He learned everything about Egyptian mythology and how to live constantly on the move. Little did he know that his dad was teaching him to survive in case he was thrown into a world where the gods of Egypt were alive along with magicians and shabtis. That is exactly what happened when the Egyptian god Set is unleashed, and banishes Dr. Julius to oblivion and forces the children to flee. They have to get their act together and put away sibling rivalry against each other to stop him. That is how they discover the truth about their family, the death of their mother, and their links to the secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs. The Kane Chronicles Consist of The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, The Serpent’s Shadow.

Poetry

We are never far from the jungle.Perched in our steel aeries we eye

The ants milling around,Confusion on the pavement,

Metallic shimmering beetles skimmingThe surface of the great tarmac river.

The scream of the howler monkey is heardAs the ambulance races downstream,

Turning vibrant red and blue in its haste.A turquoise raindrop brimming with tadpoles

Cools our eyes, as it quivers on the roof of a car park. The shadow of the hawk falls

Upon the ground, as it wafts overheadLeaving trails of exhaust traced upon the sky.

The sleek blue and white train slithers softlyInto the waiting terminal

And we see the brightness of the jungleReflected upon pane after pane of glimmering glass.

Blown by the wind, I am only a seedIn life’s endless ebb and flowAnd the only thing I’ll ever need Is a soil in which to grow.

Often I see a patch of welcoming soilWhen the wind sets me down and ceases its flightBut I know that I’m never there to stayWhen the winds change, all rootless things blow away.

They say that only wanderers are free,And with every freedom comes a price-Although great things are gained from travelEach time I leave, my life starts to unravel.

They say that only wanderers can be freeBut, rootless, how can I become a tree?

ARTIST

Art is something that has been misinterpreted on a daily basis for as long as it has existed. The common misconception

is that art is restricted to paint on a canvas or sketches in a book but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality,

art is all about the unimpeded expression of oneself through creative and imaginative means!

Sara Al Haddad is a young Emarati artist who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in

graphic design from the American University in Dubai. Growing up in an area with an almost non-existent art

scene, she took to working with unconventional art such as stitching and working with yarn as a hobby over a boring

summer vacation, only to realise that she loved it more than the graphic designing she was learning at university. Taking advantage of the freedom of her senior project, she decided

to pursue her passion with yarn and create a piece known as “self portrait,” using crochet to embody and embrace her

insecurities, doubts, and fears.

Page 55: Smart Issue

“it’s always too personal and if it isn’t then it just doesn’t work.“

Inspired by unorthodox artists like Agata Olek and Evelyn Kasikov, Sara tries tocreate art that makes her happy and expresses her true emotions, no matter how long it takes. She believes that even if it takes a very long time and she has to keep retouching a piece before she feels as though it’s good enough to show the world, it will be worth it to feel the benefit of the hard work and effort invested in it. As for the stimulus behind her pieces, she always believes in perfusing all of her emotions and personal experiences into her work because “it’s always too personal and if it isn’t then it just doesn’t work.”

As a woman in a considerably conservative and protective culture, she revels in the versatility of art in being able to express her feelings and reactions to the restrictions and limitations that may be placed upon her by people and society. Art is always present to support and empower you regardless of your nationality, looks or gender. Her obsession with yarn comes from the fact that it can always be tweaked, changed and moved around to convey whatever message she felt she had the need to express.

This fascination with yarn, however, is a difficult one to enrich in a young country with such a humble and budding art scene. As of yet, most of the art found at the new local galleries are traditional and typical paintings or photography, and although it is slowly diversifying, it proves to be difficult to find guidance or look for advice. Even more so when you’re a female artist who has ideas and concepts that may seem provocative or avant-garde.

Nevertheless, Sara continues to follow her love for yarn and believes that the truemeaning of art lies in expressing oneself in a way that challenges them to not be generic and look deeper into themselves and their everyday lives to find inspiration; after all, some of the most inspiring art can be derived from the most mundane things.

If you haven’t been to the Jebel Ali Center of Excellence to catch a game, you’re missing out on a heavy dose of Americana - hot dogs, soda pops, merchandise tents, half-time sponsor give-aways, a DJ, video cameras, photographers, and a play-by-play announcer are all there. The only thing missing are the cheerleaders.

“We plan to have cheerleaders for next season,” says league General Manager, Dustin Cherniawski.

Just two weeks ago in Desert Bowl I, the Abu Dhabi Wildcats became champions at the men’s league and high school league levels. The Junior Dubai Barracudas took top spot in the 9-13 age bracket.

The brain child of former Canadian Football League (CFL) linebacker, Dustin Cherniawski and German Football League (GFL) receiver Kai Trompeter, the EAFL has quickly become the must-watch sport in the UAE.

The UAE has been waiting for American football to arrive for many years and it seems

to have arrived overnight.

Merely eight months after the Emirates American Football League (EAFL) was born,

the league boasts 220 players and 23 coaches spread across four men’s teams, three high

school teams, and three youth teams.

With expansion plans in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi underway, the EAFL currently

looks like this:

Dubai Barracudas : Men / Seniors/ Juniors

Dubai Stallions: Men / Seniors / Juniors

Al Ain Desert Foxes: Men

Game day features a high school division which has produced some of the most

exciting games of the year and top talent for the men’s league to draw on.

“The vision is a blend for achieving local and international goals – to develop the

‘new’ sport among the residents while also fueling a national squad,” said EAFL

Commissioner Kai Trompeter.

The league contains players from more than 35 nationalities, including Sheikh

Khalid Al Qasimi from the Sharjah royal family and several other Emiratis. Yet

another healthy sign for the league is that roughly half the players have

experience from leagues in the US and Europe.

The league was further consolidated in August 2012 with the EAFL becoming

officially recognized by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

“We had a vision of bringing full-contact American football to the UAE on a level that appeals to anyone, from

beginners to experienced players,” noted Cherniawski, “and we have achieved exactly that.”

We are currently recruiting players at all three levels with a focus on the high school league.”

“The youth league is already developing some outstanding players which will pay dividends in the future. There is no

doubt that some of our athletes could play at a higher level and I suspect a few of them will”

Nick Ballew (RB – Stallions) and Andrew Williams (RB – Wildcats) are two of the top players in our league and

benefit from regular competitive games. Both of them have applied to American colleges – Ballew with his eye set on

University of Tennessee and Williams hoping for Virginia Tech”

After water, tea is the most widely consumed drink in the world. You probably know that

a wide range of teas are praised for their ability to improve your health and boost your

quality of life, but with so many to choose from you may find it difficult to the select the ones that are right for you. Some are perfect

for a person who is trying to lose weight, while others are ideal for someone looking

to reduce their risk of developing cancer. Read on to discover the top ten teas that will

improve your health, and learn which are best suited to your medical needs.

World of Tea

by Dr. E. C. Gordon

Lemon BalmLemon balm tea can help to improve your mood, and has been shown to have a slightly beneficial influence on concentration levels. It is a useful alternative for people who cannot consume caffeine. Some nutritionists also believe that lemon balm tea reduces a child’s likelihood of experiencing nightmares (if the tea is consumed before bed).

PeppermintPeppermint tea is one of the most powerful remedies for a wide range of digestive problems. It can alleviate painful stomach cramps, reduce bloating, and calm some of symptoms of mild to moderate food poisoning. As a bonus, peppermint tea freshens the breath and kills the bacteria that can cause gum disease.

WhiteWhite tea is made from only the buds of the tea plant, and it is the tea with the highest amount of antioxidants. Some scientists believe that antioxidants help to protect the body from dangerous free radicals that can cause cancer. In addition, English researchers have recently discovered that white tea is a source of chemicals that can help to keep your skin looking youthful by maintaining its plumpness and elasticity.

OolongOolong tea is a traditional Chinese beverage that is the perfect drink for those who want to improve or preserve the condition of their heart. This health benefit comes from the fact that the tea contains certain types of antioxidants that have been shown to reduce the levels of LDL (or ‘bad’) cholesterol in animals. People who have lower levels of LDL cholesterol are much less likely to suffer from heart attacks and strokes, and are also less likely to develop heart diseases.

Page 63: Smart Issue

BlackFirstly, all black teas are associated with an increased resistance to the damage caused by cigarette smoke, making them a wise choice for smokers, former smokers and people who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke. Secondly, black tea contains more caffeine than any other type, so it is an extremely useful beverage when you need to be able to focus or want to reduce your tiredness levels. Finally, black tea contains polyphenols, which provide some measure of protection against skin cancers, stomach cancers and esophageal cancers. However, studies on this particular benefit of black tea caution that you need to drink at least four cups every day if you want to protect your body from cancer.

Chai Chai tea began as a drink primarily enjoyed by Indian royalty, but it is now inexpensive and available all over the world. It contains cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and fennel, and each of these tasty ingredients can provide a different benefit for your body. Firstly, fennel and cloves are excellent for your digestive health, helping to reduce painful trapped wind, flatulence and intestinal cramps. As a result, chai tea is an ideal choice for someone with irritable bowel syndrome. Secondly, cloves can be helpful to people who have bad breath as the result of medication or a chronic health problem, so chai tea can indirectly boost your social confidence. Thirdly, some studies on blood sugar suggest that cinnamon consumption enhances your body’s ability to keep your blood sugar levels within healthy limits, so chai may also be of use to the diabetic patient or to women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome. Finally, cardamom can help to ease nausea in those who experience motion sickness.

Echinacea Echinacea tea is a herbal tea that can be helpful if you want to improve the strength of your immune system. It has long been associated with increasing the body’s resistance to viruses and bacteria. In addition, some people swear by echinacea tea as an effective treatment for the main symptoms of the cold virus.

GingerFinally, ginger tea is an invaluable purchase for pregnant women and those who suffer from motion sickness, as it has been proven to reduce nausea and vomiting. One study found that in many cases, ginger tea is a more effective remedy than the main prescription drug used to treat people suffering from seasickness. This excellent property of ginger tea also makes it a good choice as a treatment for the symptoms associated with gastric infections.

GreenGreen tea is famous for being good for your health, and some of the most popular claims have recently been supported by rigorous studies. Firstly, drinking plenty of green tea is linked with a reduction in your risk of developing cancers of the breast, colon, lung and bladder. Secondly, Japanese researchers have recently revealed that their trials have shown that drinking several cups of green tea each day reduces your chance of suffering from fatal heart disease, making it another good choice for people who want to improve their cardiovascular health. It is suspected that this health benefits come from the polyphenols found in this type of tea. Thirdly, green tea may also be an important addition to your diet in older age, as it helps to keep you mentally sharp by reducing your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Finally, the catechins in green tea can boost your metabolism and make it easier for you to lose more unwanted weight at a faster rate.

HibiscusHibiscus tea is an excellent choice for people who suffering from problems with high blood pressure, as studies show that drinking just two or three cups per day can reduce both diastolic and systolic blood pressure readings.

Tips from a proIn the previous issues I’ve discussed essential parts of the camera such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I think we are ready to explore how you can combine these three elements to make best of your photograph. Remember that it is YOU who control the camera.

How to get a right exposure? Exposure is an amount of light allowed to fall on the camera sensor during a single picture. The photograph can be described as overexposed, when important bright parts of a picture are washed out (the image looks too bright), or underexposed, when important dark areas are indistinguishable from black (the image looks too dark). The two primary controls your camera uses for exposure are shutter speed and aperture. But you must be careful in controlling them. For example, slower shutter increases exposure but also increases the motion blur, as well as opening up the aperture increases exposure, but also decreases the sharpness of the background objects.

How you can use it creatively? It is safe and perfectly fine to rely on the light meters that automatically calculate exposure for your picture, but if you know how to control your exposures manually you can get some creative and better images. If you wish to experiment try to use long-exposure effect. Set your camera to a slow shutter speed in the dark environment with a moving source of light; for example, night city with a busy road that has a lot of traffic. You will have sharply captured the stationary elements of the image such as buildings, while blurring and smearing the moving elements. The slow shutter speed will turn the moving cars into light trails, the longer the exposure, the more lines will appear and the longer they will look.

Hayla with Love

Born and raised in Dubai, Hayla Ghazal is currently studying hard for her Business Management degree while working as a

presenter covering fashion events, being featured in TV commercials and writing

articles for multiple magazines and websites. Read along to find out how Hayla

transformed herself from a shy student to a determined and motived person

who works hard.

Hayla, who is now seventeen years old, started working as a model only because she

wanted to get rid of her weak personality. Her aim was not to obtain self-confidence

from having her pictures published but from spending long hours socializing with many people at work. Initially, she had secondary roles in films and photo shoots then moved

on to major projects like working as a brand ambassador. Since she was eager to explore and learn all she could, Hayla also interned at several different companies in the fields

of event management, publishing and production. Lastly, she started working as a

presenter for an online video directory and filmed her own fashion and beauty show

with them called ‘Hayla With Love’.

Page 69: Smart Issue

What motivated you to change your personality and how were you able to bring that about?

I wanted to be comfortable talking to new people and not have to worry about how they would judge what I am going to say. The first thing I did was write down what I wanted to change about myself and everything I thought I could do to

make that change possible. Since shoots can sometimes take up to ten hours and have a minimum crew of ten members,

I decided that working as a model would encourage me to not only deal with a lot of people but also to become more

independent and responsible.

How old were you when you had your first job and how did it go?

I was fifteen when I had my first shoot which was a documentary for Al Arabiya TV. I was very nervous as I

was definitely outside my comfort zone but luckily, I met a talented model who was in her mid-thirties. She doesn’t

know it, but she inspired me to work even harder on my personality by telling me that “People think that seeing is

believing, while truthfully, believing is seeing. If you believe that you are shy, everyone will see you that

way and vice versa.”

Did working distract you from your school studies?Surprisingly, my school grades improved! The more tasks

and work I had to do, the faster I got them done. Before I started working, when I was assigned a project, I would

postpone it to the last minute, but now I keep a constant look on my schedule and make sure I finish everything early.

Have you thought of continuing modeling or presenting as a career? No, it is not my goal but I am achieving my goal through it. I wanted to gain all the experience I could from the several fields I worked in…School doesn’t teach you how to communicate with co-workers, clients or bosses.

What is your main goal then?To be honest, my goal changes according to the things I accomplish. I put “shyness” on my list for six months but once I ticked it off, I had more goals to add until it got to the point that I was adding several to accomplish on a daily basis. It’s like when one door opens, many more open even faster.

What inspires you to keep developing your personality? Incidents or people I come across. I might really admire the way someone handles things or I might be put in an awkward situation and learn from it. At the end of the day, I evaluate my actions and decide what skill or habit I want to work on.

You now have your own YouTube channel and fashion blog, what encouraged you to start them? From spending so much time at shoots watching make-up artists and stylists work their magic on all the models, my interest in fashion grew. That’s when I decided to start writing my own blog. Later, after working as a presenter, I got curious about filming, editing and producing, so I started making my own videos!

What advice would you give someone who is shy or wants to achieve a specific goal? You need to be determined to change today and now; not delay any longer. Just as I have done, I think the most effective way is to write down what you want to change about yourself or your life and think of all the ways you can make that change possible. Most importantly, keep in mind that nothing happens overnight and let sarcastic comments motivate you not destroy you.

Perfect

The sweet scent spirals up from the cup in the form of hot, white steam. She cups her hands over the mouth of the mug and lets the silvery wisps collect in her

palms, and feels them warm up her frozen fingers. But she won’t do anything more than that. She will not let herself take a sip of the hot chocolate, of the

193.4-calorie drink. 193.4.

She can’t get any fatter. She can’t drink it. Maybe she can have it now and throw up later. But she hates the bitter taste of bile that lingers in her mouth

whenever she does so. She’s jealous of her friends who can do it, who can just have everything they want and get rid of it after spending a minute retching into

the toilet bowl. Yet being jealous doesn’t do anything. If she can’t throw up, she shouldn’t eat. It’s as simple as that.

Next to her, her younger siblings chug the hot chocolate, as if they haven’t had anything for a week. Her brother is the one who finishes first. He slams the glass

mug on the table, lets out a satisfied sigh, and turns to look at her. His eyes shrink into two crescent moons behind his steamed glasses.

“Aren’t you going to have yours?” he asks. His smile is bright and big and cheerful, and his teeth are perfectly square and white like polished tiles. His smile is almost

perfect. Almost.

She stares at the soft flab of his double chin, watching how it jiggles. She tells herself it looks hideous. It is hideous. She once used to look like that, and she

looked hideous. And she would never let that happen again.

Still, after hesitating for a split second, she looks down at the warm drink. Small, half-melted marshmallows drift on the surface, clumped together into

one, squishy island. Fluffy cream is swirling its way through the drink, and the chocolate sprinkles are gently sinking into the brown foam that had collected

at the rim.

‘Drink all of it,’ her mother had told her before leaving the kitchen. ‘When I come back, I want to see that cup empty.’ She frowns as she replays her mother’s words

in her mind, feeling her growing irritation claw at her insides. She decides to pour the drink down the sink and leave the dark stains there, so her mother would

know that she would never be able to change her daughter’s mind. But then, at the same time, she thinks that the drink seems so rich, so sweet and so warm.

Unconsciously, she cups the mug in her hands and takes it to her lips. Only when the drink burns her lips does she notice what she is doing. She lets the cup fall

from her hands and to the table. The loud clatter makes both her siblings jump. A spray of brown stains the wooden surface, but she doesn’t even bother to wipe it

away. Her stomach is growling so terribly that it hurts.

Quickly, she imagines that there are bugs swimming in the mixture. Spiders, tiny, tiny spiders, with their tiny, tiny legs flailing about as they squirm from the heat.

If she drinks it, she’ll feel their legs wriggling in her throat, tickling and scratching all the way down. Some might manage to cling onto the walls of the throat, climb

up to her head, and come out of her mouth and nostrils and eyes. Some might burrow in the lungs and lay eggs there, and when the eggs hatch, the tiny spiders will run all around her body, making soft pitter-patters as they run from organ to

organ, limb to limb. She can’t let that happen.

“Sorry,” she finally mumbles, rubbing her skin to get rid of the gooseflesh. “I’m not hungry. I don’t want it.”

by Yoojin hahn

Page 71: Smart Issue

Her brother’s hazel eyes instantly brighten up. “Can I have it then?” She pushes the mug into his hands. The boy laughs happily, unnecessarily wipes the dry milk moustache on his upper lip, and takes a long sip of hot chocolate. Of spiders.

She tries to convince herself that it is disgusting. It works in the beginning, but as the boy’s gulps become longer and louder, as the sickeningly sweet scent diffuses further out in the atmosphere, she finds herself staring at her brother. Sticky saliva fills up her empty mouth.

Spotting her out of the corner of his eye, her brother stops drinking. He tilts his head, examining her for a second before he breaks into a smile again. He swirls the leftover cocoa in the mug.

“Want some?”

She shakes her head violently and walks out of the kitchen. When she reaches her bedroom, she shuts the door behind her and goes up to the mirror. Slowly, she peels the lower portion of her fabric shirt up to her shoulders. She stares at her reflection, and she marvels at how wonderful she looks like this, with her ribcage pressing sharply against her stomach, her elbows and knees jutting out at deadly angles, her stomach caving in right at the center, as if someone had carved a lump of fat out just there, and her collarbones dug so deep that one could fit a handful of pebbles in each of them.

She looks beautiful. Skinny. And she can’t let this slip away from her. All of a sudden, tears start making their way down her face, leaving wet splotches in her perfect arms and legs, as thick as a normal person’s wrist. A soft sob climbs up her throat, and she collapses on the ground, clasping her hands around her lips to muffle the cries. She believes that she is crying because she is so happy, so happy with how she looks, of what she achieved. But then, deep down, she knows that she is also terribly frightened. Both, for and of herself.

Letters to a Coach

It is very difficult to walk into a school where everyone seems to be in cliques and you feel unnoticed or worse, left out. Being the new kid at school is never easy and it is one of the most common struggles that students feel when they join a new school. Remind yourself that this is a normal transition into your new school life. Although it seems impossible right now, you do know that in a few weeks, you too will have a group of friends that you will feel are your friends. For now, it’s important that you don’t let this issue over consume your time and focus at school.

My suggestion to get you moving along in the right direction is the following;First, spend more time getting to know more about the school. Where is everything that you need? Where are all the specialist offices, specialist teachers, facilities and different group activity locations? Use this time alone to become more curious about the school that you have joined. Teachers will become a great resource and support during this time. Maybe even start a journal of what you learn and when you’ve completed it, perhaps the school could publish it and pass it on to the new students that will arrive after you.

Next, join school clubs that interest you. What do you really enjoy doing? Are you a sporty person? Do you enjoy debates? Find a club or clubs that you are interested in and join them. Doing this will help you connect with other people that also enjoy similar interests as you. With time, you may develop friendships through these clubs.

Finally, although it is very challenging, try to be friendly with students around you. Find opportunities to make small talk. For example, in class, ask the person next to you what they have planned for the week-end. Or in the lunch hall, talk to the person ahead of you in the cue and talk about the lunch options available. Small talk is always a great way to start conversations and with time, you will start to make new friends.

Remember that this is a normal process that you are going through. All new students face similar challenges but it is also an opportunity to enjoy new experiences and learn what your strengths are as a person. Put a smile on your face and keep your head held high. You are a special person and there are people at school that will jump at the opportunity to be your friend.

Q. I’m kind of new in school and I want to make friends. All I ever hear is ‘just be yourself’ and ‘just be friendly’ but it’s not

that easy on your second day. Everyone already has their own cliques and groups

and they exclude me from everything. Everyone already knows who they’re going

to pair up with in science class, while I’m stuck with whoever is ‘leftover’. I really

want to make friends but I don’t know what to do or how to do it. Can you

please help me?

Q. During my early years of teenage hood, parents, teachers and friends all brought much attention to the topic of ‘body weight issues’ and ‘eating disorders’ Leaving me completely aware of the matter. I understood that weight did not matter, and that my friends and family would accept me for me and not my weight. Recently my friends and I have grown older (as everyone does), however with age I seem to have developed an eating disorder. I’m constantly watching the food I eat and have tried numerous times to go on a diet, but failed due to my parents worry. My friends are finally getting attention, as girls normally would, and I seem to be pushed aside- I can’t help but think it’s because of the way I look. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve tried purging after eating and tried to watch the food I eat as a whole. I don’t want this to get serious, yet I can’t seem to talk to anyone about this issue. Please help me before it gets serious!

Food ProblemsI want to start by acknowledging you for coming forward with this very serious issue. Weight issues have long been discussed but there is still a long way to go. Magazines, television and movies all attribute to the message that ‘thin’ is beautiful and curves are not. As a woman myself, I too struggle with the idea of ‘body beauty’ so I want to start by normalising this issue for you. Both men and women across the globe regardless of gender, age or race all struggle with the notion of beauty and weight. You are not alone. In fact, your letter today will help many struggling with this very same challenge.

However, what you have described to me above has raised some serious red flags. If you watch Teens Talk Dubai, you’ll recognise the term ‘red flag’ as a signal for danger ahead. I am concerned that your body weight issue has developed and is still developing into a more serious health risk. Eating disorders are usually stemmed from what you have described above. Teens your age develop them because they feel ‘fat’ and struggle to lose the weight so they turn to a more drastic measure and either binge or purge or worse some even starve themselves for days a time and then binge and purge. Binging is when an individual eats so much food at one time and then the guilt of doing so leads them to purge it out of their system. I want you to know that simply starting this behaviour is already serious in my eyes. Stop and get some help.

• Reach out to a dietician. They are the experts in helping to find the right food choices that will keep us healthy while also eliminating any unnecessary weight gain from poor food choices. • Going a gym or sign up for exercise classes at a nearby gym or fitness centre. Exercise and healthy food habits are partners and one supports the success of the other. If you can’t afford a gym membership, there are lots of exercise DVDs in shops or even some great free ones on YouTube.

Work on your self-esteem and self-confidence issues. Stop believing that your weight is your only hope for being noticed by your friends. I agree that physical beauty is an initial attractor, however as corny as this sounds, internal beauty is the lasting factor is keeping someone’s attention. What is beautiful about you? What would be seen as attractive? Is it your sense of humour? Is it your kind and generous nature? What are your star qualities? We all have them….what are yours? Notice these things within you and soon, your weight will have less of an impact on your overall happiness.

Remember that you are never alone. There is always someone to talk to. Family, friends or teachers are the top of the list. If you can’t talk to any of them, talk to me. Email me at [email protected] and let me know how you’re feeling.

Finally, look for examples of men and women who are famous but are not ‘slim and thin’. There are many. I wish you joy and I wish you peace with the physical body that you call your home.

ARIES(21 March- 20 April)

Page 75: Smart Issue

ARIES(21 March- 20 April)

You will have great powers this month to attract people towards you. People that have just met you will find you fascinating and very interesting. You have lots of friends but it’s time you think of something new you can do for them that would change their lives to the better. This is a month of ambition, new projects and competitions. You know what you want, so don’t let anyone stand in your way. Listen to advice your friends and family give you, they may be right sometimes.

LEO(21 July- 20 August)

This will be a month of passion towards everything. There is something important you’ve wanted to tell a special person in your life and this is the time to do it. You are determined and ambitious. Your powerful actions will make you progress very quickly and you will become unstoppable. You may be taking a trip for work or studies and many things happen once you get back from abroad.

SAGITTARIUS(23 November- 20 December)

Time is precious so don’t waist a single minute of it. If you let go of time and let yourself be quiet and at peace on the inside you may experience great feelings and tap into dreams you haven’t experienced before. This is not the time to take big risks. Think your plans through before you act. You will always be in the right place at the right time and will benefit from your social interactions at work or with your studies. Energy is what drives you this month and you will get a lot of work done.

TAURUS(21 April- 20 May)

The beginning of the month may be a little bumpy with some minor disappointments. If someone close gets ill make sure to stand by them and help them out as much as you can. You will find that a good friend wants to start a small and fun project with you which will be successful. Success is coming closer to you so be ready for great things. Work hard and you will be ahead of everyone in no time.

VIRGO(21 August- 20 September)

You have a curiosity to decode the thought process of everyone around you. You like the company of people that have manners, class, a good education and pizazz. You may worry sometimes and even doubt yourself which you don’t need to do because you have the ability to mesmerize people by solving a mystery or decoding a conspiracy theory. If you plan on doing something new now is the time to do it. Apply for that scholarship or raise you wanted and you may get more than what you expected.

CAPRICORN(21 December- 19 January)

It’s time for spring cleaning and rearranging your home or your room. You will feel much better when you have fresh surroundings and will see things from a different perspective. Organize an event for your family and surprise them by inviting some unexpected relatives. But you will need some privacy at some point to rearrange your thoughts. Take it easy and make future plans and strategies. You will be lucky this month so take some small risks and you may win in a competition. You will make good impressions in social gatherings and you will begin planning a huge project.

GEMINI21 May- 20 June)

Go out, have fun and meet new people and something you’ve been wanting for quite a while will finally happen. Make sure to give your body a rest after all the partying. Think of your future plans, set a plan of action and just go for it. Starting NOW! You have everything you need to create success. You will meet many intelligent people that will be willing to partner up with you or help you with your dream catching. Good luck!

LIBRA(21 September- 20 October)

April will be an extraordinary month for you. You will be passionate about everything you do. Partnering up with a friend for a great cause will give you great results and get you closer to your goals. Disagreements will exist but you will move on once you understand each other. Plan each step because even a small decision to go in a specific direction can make you or break you. Take short breaks and avoid conflicts. Everything can be fixed with pure logic.

AQUARIUS(20 January- 18 February)

When opportunities come your way grab them and make the most of it. There will be many meaningful conversations, important e-mails and text messages. A friend may confess to something they did that was unethical, if you were involved you may want to give them a second chance. You are good at speaking to people and will be able to convince them to do anything. You may be taking a trip to a beautiful place. It’s as if you installed a fresh set of batteries and you’re running like a Duracell bunny.

CANCER(21 June- 20 July)

You tend to be a bit of a perfectionist and your friends or colleagues will irritate you when they make avoidable mistakes. Focus on the positive in all people around you and relationships will become much easier. It’s time to take action and begin climbing your mountain of success. You will have all the energy you need and you will not be able to sit in front of the TV and do nothing all day. If you don’t take things into your own hands somebody else will so get going.

SCORPIO(21 October- 22 November)

You will put all your efforts into your work or studies. Together with a partner you have overcommitted or signed up for an activity that will drain you. Practice the law of attraction; visualize what you want and you will see your dreams begin to come true. Just don’t sit around and do nothing while you wait for an epiphany. You have great talent and it is becoming visible to others much more than before. Everyone can spot a great leader when they see one. Do not stress over deadlines, just take a deep breath and enjoy dealing with them.

PISCES(19 February- 20 March)

The stars will bring your friends closer to you and you will express yourself freely. You’re very practical and will need little details when an idea for school or work is proposed. If you want to increase your savings you may want to calculate your expenses. Find new ways to make money using your talent or specific skill. Focus your energy on all that is productive, otherwise you may lose quite a lot of what you had saved. You are very strong internally and your family will rely on you greatly.

You were either too lazy or didn’t focus enough on

the questions. You may want to give your brain some work out time and find yourself some IQ tests you can practice on. Focus on what you’re doing and always double-check your answers. You may be very outgoing but philosophical conversations do not interest you and you walk away quickly once someone initiates them.

1-4 Not quite there:

You are quite smart and can figure out what to do in difficult situations pretty

easily. You did well at school and have no difficulty integrating with different types of people. Intellectual conversations interest you and you like listening to other people’s opinions even when you don’t necessarily agree. Logic is one of your strengths and you grasp new and different ideas easily.

5-7 Average:

You have a good head on your shoulders. You may not want to

socialize with people that are not up to your standards in intellect, but you must know that a high IQ does not always guarantee you success. Logic comes naturally to you and you see things in a different way than everyone else. But give your ‘not-so-bright’ friends a chance and you’d be surprised what you can learn from them because you can’t see things their way either.

Cat and Keyboard !;3lk

78

So, you’ve waited overnight to decide whether or not you should send that irate

e-mail to your boss. Your finger is wavering between “delete” and “enter”. You decide

that it is not in your best interest to send it, when WHAM! Send! Priority “high”! Curses!

The cat strikes again! Are our cats really cyber-savvy felines

deliberately sabotaging our data? No one knows for sure. What we do know is that it must be stopped. Here are some methods

that you can try in an attempt to keep your cat away from your computer.

1. Talk to itTell your cat, “no-no!” If it works, then your cat is probably actually a dog. If it does not work, proceed to step 2.

4. Let it GoogleConsider designating a window of time during which your cat can use the computer on his own. By walking across your keyboard, he may be trying to tell you that he needs to Google “hairball relief” or something like that. However, if you do let your cat use the computer, be sure and keep an eye on what exactly he’s doing. You don’t want him chatting with dogs posing as cats, or finding places to score catnip.

3. Take a napThink about letting your cat settle in on your keyboard. Your ability to work then becomes impossible. What can you do? Your hands are tied. Might as well take a nap.

2. Stick itRoll up some packing tape strips so that they are sticky-side-out. Give them a quick run over your pants to remove some of the stickiness. Apply the packing tape to your arms, legs, and any other point of access to your keyboard. Upon his next attempt at sabotage, your cat will run away in shock, shaking his back legs one at a time in alarm, in a frenzied attempt to remove the tape. You should then remove the tape from your cat. Repeat as needed.

5. Coin canHere is a preferable method, which will cause less embarrassment to both you and your cat: place a handful of coins in a metal can next to your work area. When your cat starts to make a move toward the computer, shake the can. The noise will startle him and make him run away. Unless, of course, your cat is deaf. If that is the case, then your cat is probably really old, and you should pretty much let him do whatever his little heart desires. Klfgf.!
