What is Urbanization?It refers to the process in which in which an increasing proportion of a society live in cities and suburbs of cities thus bringing a large concentration of people into towns and cities.

Impact?Increased population leads to more waste, garbage and byproducts.

Natural habitat destroyed.

Poor waste management causes the spread of diseases and pollution.

Food demand increases and more land needs to be cleared for food production.

Water issues.

Explicitly, this is all because of stress on the available resources .

Rapid urbanization is becoming a reason for scarcity of resources.

Is there any solution to this problem?

A smart city uses digital technologies to enhance performance and wellbeing, to reduce costs and resource consumption, and to engage more effectively and actively with its citizens.

Key 'smart' sectors include transport, energy, health care, water and waste.

Imagine factories automatically spotting glitches and fixing them, hospitals regulating medical devices remotely, and lighting and temperature in a hotel moulding themselves to our preference.

Think of sensors monitoring water levels, energy usage, traffic flows, and security cameras, and sending that data directly to city administrators. Or apps that help residents navigate traffic, report potholes and vote. Or trash collection that's totally automated.

Smart grid generally refers to computer-based remote control and automation.

Much in the way that a smart phone these days means a phone with a computer in it, smart grid means computerizing the electric utility grid.

It includes adding two-way digital communication technology to devices associated with the grid. Each device on the network can be given sensors to gather data (power meters, voltage sensors, fault detectors, etc.), plus two-way digital communication between the device in the field and the utilitys network operations center.

EV charging infrastructures An electric vehicle charging station, also called EV charging station is an element in an infrastructure that supplies electric energy for the recharging of plug-in electric vehicles, including all electric cars, neighborhood electric vehicles.Traffic management How could there be more vehicles but less traffic in the future? GPS trackers, social media posts, mobile phones and cameras located in cars and on the street. Cities capture and analyze data from all these sources as well as thousands of sensors embedded in roads and vehicles to monitor and manage traffic in real time.Smart parking system It is a system that help drivers to find a parking spot quicker and allow cities to manage their parking spaces more efficiently.

A smart building is one that achieves significant energy savings by taking advantage of improved technology and materials in terms of structure, appliances, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVACR.

A smart building is one which is connected to smart grid to manage its power consumption . For example :

Electricity markets are evolving toward real time, meaning that buildings can receive requests to reduce demand when wholesale prices are high or when grid reliability is jeopardized.

Therefore smart grid and smart buildings are interdependent.
