INSPIRATION: ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS BY FOCUSING ON WHERE YOU WANT TO GOIt is fairly common knowledge that racing car drivers are trained not to look at the wall when tearing around a circuit at high speed. Why? Because they go where they look. We all do this subconsciously and “don’t look down” might also sound familiar in this context. Where we look has a lot to do with where we find ourselves today. More importantly, understanding this intuitive reaction can make all the difference as to where we find ourselves tomorrow.

The majority of entrepreneurs are not in touch with their “wants” and this manifests very clearly in their results. There is a significant reason for this breakdown. We all have ingrained mental programming that goes back to our early development as we learned to understand the meaning of words. The most consequential word we came to recognise early was the word “No”.

“No” is a very understandable response to a newly mobile little person intent on discovering every available manner of injuring themselves. As parents we all understand the necessity of saying no - and our intentions are good- but it’s an unfortunate start to a child’s psyche.

This negative programming continues throughout our childhood development as in most cases our needs are fulfilled ahead of our wants. This parenting supposedly teaches us to strive harder for what we want but it often achieves the opposite, and ultimately renders us completely useless at identifying our wants with any conviction. In my business seminars, I often ask my audience to write a list of what they want. I do this because I want them to look at those wants, the first important step to attaining them. The reaction, across culture and nationality, is very similar and involves a lot of head scratching, shifting uncomfortably and grimacing uneasily. Very little actually gets written down!

Yet ask a three year old at Christmas time what he wants and his world comes alive with endless possibilities. The difference between the three year old and the adult is that the three year old still believes he can have what he wants. The adult has had that belief de-programmed and has been successfully taught to provide for his needs only. When starting a business we often set it up to cater for our needs, and in many cases, this is all that we achieve. Anyone who feels as if they have “bought a job” might recognise this situation.

The major difference between the entrepreneurs who make enough money to survive and those who achieve a successful lifestyle lies with what they focused on, and where they were looking, before they took their first entrepreneurial step.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY SO MANY TRAINING INITIATIVES FAIL? WHY PEOPLE WHO’VE ATTENDED A WORKSHOP ARE BACK IN THEIR OLD WAYS THREE MONTHS LATER?The answer is – it was a Training Event, not a PROCESS.

For 45 years, Fortune Group International have been developing interactive line management led training processes. Since 1986, Rod Large and his team at Fortune International Ltd have been helping hundreds of New Zealand companies as big as Air New Zealand and CHH, to small SME’s to implement training that achieves real behaviour change long term.

This year, Rod Large will be celebrating 30 years association with Fortune.

In 1984, Rod became a client of Fortune, who marketed into New Zealand from Sydney. As he says, “It worked so well for me and the organisation I was with, that I did my Victor Kiam impression and bought the company rights for New Zealand”.

To celebrate this association and to mark the launch of Rod’s 30th video/DVD programmes – Accountable Leadership and Performance Development, Fortune International Ltd will be facilitating Leadership and Revenue Generation workshops each month from March 2015.

Beginning with ‘The Seven Elements of Leadership’, the workshops to be held at Fortune’s Training Centre in Albany will be as follows:

WORKSHOPS 20157 Elements of Leadership

MAR: APR: MAY: JUL:

AUG: SEP: OCT:

7 Essentials for Sales Success

MAR:APR:MAY:JUL: AUG:

SEP:OCT:

The workshops introduce prospective clients to the Fortune Process and all participants complete an online profile prior to attending the sessions. With a fee of $495.00 per workshop plus GST, it is a highly cost effective method of beginning a development process.

Richard Carver, head of Jennian Homes and CMS Ltd and one of Fortune’s long term clients, states – “Working with Rod and his team, your business will become more focussed, as everyone works towards achieving the same end goal”.

SMART TRAINING:ACHIEVING LONG TERM BEHAVIOURAL CHANGES

THE PROCESS HAS FOUR PARTSBeginning with in-depth Profiling of participants to ensure they have the attitude and capacity to take the training on board. Remember - “You can’t carve rotten wood’. Secondly are Workshops to introduce the new skills and to train managers to facilitate the process.

Fortune and Smart-Train Systems (the online arm of Fortune International Ltd) provide an online coaching system for both managers and participants.

Finally, the process is monitored and measured by Fortune, who then conduct both online and in-person Certification sessions to ensure there has been real changes in the participant’s behaviours.

GADGETS FOR TECH SAVVY ENTREPRENEURS

Sony Watch 3A smartwatch is an excellent gadget to complement your smartphone. The Sony Watch 3 cleanly bridges the gap between functionality and style and comes equipped with a basic rubber wristband. On the tech front, the watch has a 1.6 inch, sun-readable display screen that’s perfect for checking notifications, browsing media and of course, reading the time. It has a battery life that makes it one of the longest-lasting smartwatches on the market.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The Galaxy Note 4 is the best large phone on the market right now. It’s powered by an amazing fast quad-core processor and packs 3GB of RAM, so business users can expect smoother performance and snappy multitasking.

The Note 4 excels from a productivity standpoint, offering seamless multitasking. The Multi Window mode lets you run two applications at once in a split-screen view. In split-screen mode, you can easily change the size of the windows by dragging the border between them.

Other features include its elegant design, robust build, beautiful screen, impressive battery life and solid camera.

Mophie’s Powerstation PRO

You can now keep just about any USB powered device going in the most extreme conditions. The Powerstation PRO is ruggedly powerful, made for Smartphones, Tablets and other USB devices. With 6000mAh battery capacity, this rugged sidekick will keep most devices going for days. It’s totally dust-proof and water resistant. Getting the Powerstation PRO wet is no big deal (but don’t take a bath with it).

BlueAnt S4 True Handsfree

The BlueAnt S4 True Handsfree is exactly that – a device that means you no longer need to touch car speakerphones while driving. You can make and receive calls on the road using nothing but your voice.

To activate, simply say “BlueAnt Speak to Me” and the S4 will be ready for you to use. To make a call say “Phone Commands” and the S4 will activate your phone’s voice dialling feature. When the phone rings you won’t need to take your eyes off the road to know who is calling because the S4 will read out the caller’s name or number and ask you if you want to take the call. All you have to do is say “Answer” or “Ignore”, making it easier, safer and more efficient for you to use your phone for business or personal calls while on the road.

Not only that, but you can hear your message on the go. The S4 integrates with Vlingo SafeReader so that your incoming text messages are read aloud.

iPad Air 2The iPad Air 2 isn’t exactly a brand-new design per se, but it’s razor-thin and super-fast. It also comes with the best application selection bar none thanks to the Apple App Store. The extra burst of performance ensures that it stays among the most powerful tablets on the market this year. It also won Trusted Review’s Tablet of the Year Award 2014. The focus is on improving the user experience, not just packing as many pixels as possible into the 9.7-inch screen.

LaCie Sphère

The LaCie Sphère is as practical as it is beautiful. Its 1TB of storage gives you enough space for years of backups or to house an extensive photo, video and music library. It features high-speed USB 3.0, which makes file transfers and backups nearly three times faster than with USB 2.0. The LaCie Sphère is even powered through the USB cable, so no power cord is ever necessary.

Devialet Phantom Speaker

This is a wireless speaker system - one that is at the leading edge of technology. Phantom on its own will replace stereo systems and speakers, it’s 100% wirelessly connected by Wi-Fi and can play on its own or with other Phantoms.

The Phantom is a petite, spherical, all-in-one amplifier and speaker that delivers what audiophiles think may be the best sound in the world. With its latest wireless multi-room speaker system, Devialet promises high-fidelity sound and power of up to 3000W, all without the slightest distortion or muting.

Logitech BCC950 ConferenceCam

The Logitech BCC950 ConferenceCam is a great choice for business and high-level corporate conference rooms. Now groups can collaborate over video from anywhere; no more competing for overbooked conference room systems or huddling around a single PC just to have a video meeting.

It’s a pretty serious webcam, with the ability to transmit continuous 1080p video at 30 frames per second along with full-duplex audio. It has a 78-degree field of view, plus 180-degree video pan, tilt, and zoom, so you can gather a small group around a table.

Belkin QODE Ultimate Pro Keyboard Case

The Belkin QODE Ultimate Pro Keyboard Case is the perfect accessory for your iPad Air 2 and is the ultimate enhancement of your iPad Air 2 experience. This fully compact keyboard combines durable tablet protection, viewing versatility and a totally renovated typing experience all in one lightweight, portable package. The QODE keyboard makes it easier than ever to use; simply detach and go.

Parrot Zik 2.0

For Parrot Zik 2.0, engineers have collaborated again with French designer Philippe Starck to provide the best audio and innovation in these comfortable and trendy new headphones. They’re some of the most technologically advanced headphones on the market with impeccable design and an awesome app - they’re a breeze to use.

Zik 2.0 are 17 percent lighter than the previous design, offering more space for your ears thanks to a new ear cushion, and feature a more comfortable headband. Additionally, they’re wireless headphones with adaptive noise cancellation, Street Mode and Flight Mode, offering up to 18 hours battery life.

Page 8: Smart Business - February 2015

Nothing brings his insight into sharper focus than a recent steep drop in commodity prices, as our hard working farmers start feeling the effects of volume competition and exchange rate driven export market whimsy. Fonterra dropped its payout forecast for 2014-15 to an eight year low of $4.70/kg of milk solids. That’s nearly half of the previous season, and indicates an almighty drop of over $6.5 billion in farmer revenue – something all kiwis will ultimately be affected by.

Coupled with this is the increasing sense that New Zealand, and certainly the rest of the world, is beginning to recognise serious environmental and natural resource constraints. Some gloomy statistics include our planet already being committed to 4-6oC of warming by 2100, 50% of humanity will be exposed to water scarcity by 2050, we are making deserts out of productive land at a rate of 12.4 million hectares per annum, and the sustainable catch of fisheries is being exceeded by 100 billion tonnes. Probably worst of all, species extinction is now 1,000 times greater than natural rates.

Locally, New Zealand’s per capita carbon emissions are among the highest in the world, our native biodiversity is severely threatened and freshwater quality is still in decline. Our trading partners are beginning to notice – New Zealand has plummeted down the ranks of

well-respected international surveys such as the Yale Environmental Performance Index; from 1st place in 2006, to 16th in 2014.

Your opinion on climate change doesn’t even matter any more – it’s what our trading partners think that matters.

Without a heaving financial services sector or strategically positioned trade logistics hub, New Zealand relies on its purity and untouched environment to underpin its international market reputation as a safe and clean food producer – our biggest earner. We don’t want to damage that reputation, nor do we want to be committed to commodity-driven growth. We need to hedge ourselves for the future.

Your opinion on climate change doesn’t even matter any more – it’s what our trading partners think that matters. The positive news is that it’s not only possible for New Zealand to develop high-value technologies that leverage our existing competencies such as agriculture, it’s also possible to deliver positive environmental outcomes at the same time. This pool of innovation is variously known as

‘cleantech’ or ‘green technology’. Cleantech is not fictional, nor is it a bubble – it’s a market response to real world market conditions.

Cleantech touches every industry, from renewable energy generation, to the substitution of toxic chemicals in goods, energy and water efficiency measures, electric vehicles, biotechnologies, waste processing – the list is infinite. Global investment in cleantech has risen from USD$500m in 2001 to more than USD$300 billion in 2013 (Bloomberg). A compelling growth statistic by anyone’s measure!

So what clean technologies does New Zealand have to offer the world? Quite a few, actually. Sustained taxpayer investment in science and innovation, coupled with a plucky determination for developing niche technologies has yielded a treasure trove.

A great example is a company called Pacific Rubber – a sustainable producer of high quality recycled rubber, based in Takanini. Their technology creates crumb and buffing products, which are used in civil construction, synthetic sports fields, landscaping, mats, non-slip pavements and raw material for adhesives and resins. The environment wins because the recycled material displaces other non-renewable materials and avoids further landfilling of waste.

GREEN TECH PROVIDES REAL OPPORTUNITES FOR HIGH VALUE GROWTH IN NEW ZEALAND The late Sir Paul Callaghan – an entrepreneurial kiwi, world-leading scientist and Rutherford Medal awardee, said in 2011 that New Zealand chooses to be poor because we don’t focus on leveraging our high-value innovation.

Our Crown Research Institutes such as forestry experts Scion, have developed a huge pool of world-leading innovative green technologies such as (non-oil based) bio-plastics, municipal waste processing facilities and naturally derived nanofibre production.

This year it’s my mission to upscale New Zealand’s high-value clean technology companies. But the commercial opportunities are not just limited to pointy-head scientists. Banks have also recognised the inherent benefits of growing their cleantech portfolio. Westpac is leading the charge with a serious focus on helping innovation-driven green companies and support for programmes such as the New Zealand Cleantech & Environment Network (NZCEN) www.nzcen.com.

So what am I going to do about it? Well, building on the great thinking done by charitably funded green growth think tanks such as Pure Advantage, this year it’s my mission to upscale New Zealand’s high-value clean technology companies.

Supported by some key players, we are going to set up a large-scale green investment scheme to find, fund and support New Zealand cleantech companies earning on the world stage. With a bit of luck we can help build New Zealand’s reputation as a high-tech, high-value, sustainable global citizen.

So, if you are interested in cleantech investment or have a green business opportunity you want to talk about, please get in touch:

ENTREPRENEUR INTERVIEW: 10 QUESTIONS WITH SHANE BRADLEYShane Bradley has a reputation as one of New Zealand’s hardest working young entrepreneurs and was founder and CEO of GrabOne, New Zealand’s leading group buying site. Growing up in Rotorua, Shane left school after sixth form and started his first business two years later. Prior to starting GrabOne in July 2010, he founded Finda in 2004 and Sella in 2008, both of which were subsequently acquired by media giant APN (now NZME).

NZ Entrepreneur magazine hit Shane with 10 questions on entrepreneurship and leadership.

NZ Entrepreneur: How old were you when you started your first business and what was the business? Was it successful?

Shane Bradley: I was 19 when I started. It was an aluminium joinery business. It was successful for about 3.5 years with it getting up to about 45 employees. I got hit with a large number of bad debts and that made the business impossible to continue.

NZE: Do you think anyone can learn to be a successful entrepreneur? Why or why not?

SB: Anyone can be successful, but they have to be prepared to put in the hard yards to be successful. Just

like a person doesn’t just turn up and hope to run a 3 hour marathon without the training, a person shouldn’t expect a business to be successful just because they start it.

NZE: When it comes to decision making, how much do you rely on gut instinct as opposed to logic, and why?

SB: I tend to reply on gut feel, but also on the fact that for any decision I have to make, I would have thought of every possible angle for it to go good or bad. I think a lot and don’t sleep a hell of a lot so it’s good thinking time! The biggest thing I do is I don’t stuff around making the decisions. I’d rather fail fast than procrastinate.

NZE: You’ve started a wide range of businesses over the years – most recently Finda, Sella and GrabOne – where do you get your business ideas from and how do you know when you’ve got a good one?

SB: I’ve always wanted to be in business; both my parents are self employed and have been for as long as I can remember, so you could say it’s in the blood! The ideas for online businesses come from looking around the world and seeing what’s happening in other markets, then bringing some of that learning and tailoring it to the kiwi culture.

Page 11: Smart Business - February 2015

NZE: Sooner or later all entrepreneurs are confronted with personal challenges they have never faced before. What has been the biggest personal lesson you’ve had to learn as an entrepreneur?

SB: Going broke at age 23! It tests your mettle, but I made a promise to myself that I would be back in business for myself within one year. A lot of people may have given up, but for me that wasn’t an option.

NZE: In your leadership role as Founder and CEO of GrabOne, what is the most important focus for you?

SB: Focusing on the next leaders coming through. We have 130 Grabsters now (staff) and for me a lot of time is focused on working with my senior team to identify and retain great people. People make businesses; lots of businesses forget that.

NZE: How do you develop your people to become leaders?

SB: Empower them to make their own decisions. I give them the freedom to be able to make mistakes and not worry about losing their job over it. Always try new things; if some don’t work, don’t do them again, but if we aren’t failing we aren’t pushing hard enough.

NZE: And what is your strategy for retaining talent in your companies?

SB: In a nutshell, treat them with respect, be honest and truthful in all dealings with them.

NZE: When things get tough and you feel like giving up, what do you do to hang in there?

SB: I never give in, fullstop. Giving up is not even in my vocabulary.

NZE: What is your secret to having a successful personal life, as well as being a successful entrepreneur and business person?

SB: I believe everyone can focus on and be successful in two things – any more and one of the three tends to be left out. For me that’s business and most importantly my family. I don’t focus on much else. I’m lucky that business for me is not work, it’s as much a hobby as anything. I am also lucky that I have an amazingly supportive wife and two beautiful daughters who make any tough day a good day.

We all like to work in a place where the windows let in the light and views from the outside, but the reality can be quite different and glass can also cause problems, resulting in uncomfortable employees and expensive power bills.

We’ve all experienced it. When the morning or afternoon sunlight creeps into a room, the thermostat shoots up and the air conditioning starts working overtime to cool the room. As if this wasn’t bad enough the other side of the building ends up freezing.Or when the glare from the sun is so bad that you can’t see your computer screen and have to wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses inside is never a good look!

There is a solution. 3M Window Films make your windows smarter by acting as a filter, so you can choose what part of the sun you want, and what part you want to reject.3M Window Films reject up to 79% of the sun’s heat, reducing building hot spots and creating a more even and moderate temperature. This means your air conditioning system can work more efficiently, reducing energy costs. They also reject up to 90% of glare, meaning no more sunglasses!

Window Films are retrofitted to existing glazing and are generally applied to the interior face. A 3M Accredited Installer will be able to install the film to a high standard and with minimal disruption to your workplace.

With a wide range of films available, modern sun control films don’t have to make a building look dark or like a huge mirror anymore. The clear or very lightly tinted 3M Prestige range for example, uses patented 3M technology to reduce heat, whilst allowing natural light through, so as not to alter the aesthetic of the building.

Another way to make your windows smarter, is to have an optically clear 3M Security film installed on your glass. The 3M patented tear resistant film helps to secure the most vulnerable part of your building, helping to deter break-ins and reduce risk of injury from smashed glass.

No one has more experience with window films than 3M. In 1966, 3M received the first patent for window films and today there are millions of metres of 3M Window Film installed all around the world.

In New Zealand, Computaleta Group is 3M’s preferred distributor, with five branches nationwide, selling to the window tinting and signage industries.

As well as distributing product, Computaleta Group advise on specifications for architects and building owners and provide training for the 3M Accredited Window Film Installer Network.

For one of the most comprehensive warranties on the market, always chose a 3M Accredited Installer to make your windows smarter.

T op tier law firm Minter Ellison Rudd Watts offers six tips

you can do to protect your brand.

H Have you cleared and protected your key brands?

At a minimum you should clear and register key brands as trade marks to avoid infringing others marks. Your key brands may be words or logos. Registrations (and even if you can’t achieve registration immediately, applications) are recorded on a public searchable register, which alerts others to your use and may put them off adopting the same or a similar brand. A registered trade mark gives you immediate brand protection nationally and can be sold, licensed and otherwise dealt with.

H Do you know who owns copyright in your trade marks?

Where your trade marks are logos, copyright is equally important. Copyright ownership gives you the right to reproduce and use

Is your brand protected?

the logo, to enforce your rights in it, to sell it e.g. in a business sale, and licence others to use it. It arises when the logo is created. In most countries there is no need to register copyright. Ownership of copyright will depend on who created it and on what terms. In New Zealand the usual position is that copyright created by an employee in the normal course of their employment will be owned by the employer. You need to have a clear chain of title to ownership of copyright to enforce it in the Courts, sell it or otherwise deal with it.

H What are you doing to maintain your trade mark registrations?

Trade mark registrations generally last 10 years and can be renewed. Registrations can become vulnerable to challenge by another person for non-use. Non-use issues may arise where your logo changes over time but the trade mark registration is not updated, or if you let others use your trade mark (e.g. licensing or distribution arrangements) and don’t adequately control use.

H Do you know how to use the ™ and ® symbols?

Generally you should use the symbol ™ and can do so at any time – it means you claim the mark as a trade mark, whether or not it is registered – you may only use the symbol ® when you have fully registered your trade mark.

H Have you got sufficient domain name protection?

Domain names are also important and are often exploited by scammers and “squatters”. Once someone else registers your brand as a domain, even if they do not actively use it, it can be difficult and costly to get the domain transferred to you. So register now what you need, or think you may need in the future. Registration

fees are relatively low so this is a simple and cost-effective strategy.

A registered trade mark gives you immediate

brand protection nationally and can

be sold, licensed and otherwise dealt with.

Backbone Subscribe to the digital legal magazine Backbone, packed full of useful information around a range of common legal questions. minterellison.co.nz/backbone

H Are you aware “.nz” domain names are now available?

Anyone can register a “.nz” domain name. If an equivalent .nz domain name is already registered (e.g. “.co.nz” or “.org.nz”) then the registrant of that domain name will have “Preferential Registration Eligibility” and will be able to register a “.nz” domain name for the same name prior to 30 March 2015. A conflict regime applies where two or more people have Preferential Registration Eligibility.

FEEDBACK FROM OVER 200 CEO’S: WHAT THEY LEARNT IN 2014 + THE CHALLENGES THEY FACE IN 2015Last year I went out to our Company network of clients, Thought Leaders & Business Leaders and asked them what they had learnt in 2014 and what they felt they would face in 2015. I was overwhelmed with the response.

This year I asked the same network (which of course has now grown quite extensively) the same questions. This includes Chief Executives of both publicly listed and privately held companies across a vast range of industries. Mainly New Zealand and Australian companies, but also the USA and Canada.

Some good friends (including John Spence) put the questions to some of the Chief Executives in thier North American networks who also happily contacted me. I also asked my wide Military network of leaders (many still serving & others leading organisations all over the globe) and included senior leaders from other government enterprises.

During 2014 we also had ongoing feedback from over 1000 business leaders who attended our speaking and leadership training events. Many of these were introduced through ASB Business Banking and partner relationships with other professional services leaders, including Accountants, Legal Firms, Leadership and Strategy Consultants and some of the business bank staff themselves from both Westpac and ASB.

I recieved some fantastic feedback and I thank all those who put so much effort into answering the questions I posed.

Many commented on just how valuable they found it to have a reason to sit down and reflect on 2014 and the year ahead. Many also realised just how busy they have been, how much change they have been leading, and just how much they have achieved.

I worked through all this feedback before re-reading the blog I wrote in November 2013 - there are similar themes around talent, but it shows definitively that the rate of constant change has really started to increase (more so than in 2013). This is particularly so in Christchurch (post earthquake boom) but is also reflected across all markets, countries, and is the new big challenge for Chief Executives regardless of the size of their organisation.

What were the leadership lessons you learnt in 2014? (and/or observations you have made)

1. “Change is constant and is both the opportunity and the challenge”

The Rate of Change is increasing - almost every respondent referred to the impact and effects of change and the challenge of getting things done. Leading through change is challenging and many referred to “expecting the unexpected” or the possibility that anything could happen (especially unplanned), there was also a need to iterate, be flexible and involve your people.

To avoid stress the best method was learning “not to sweat the small stuff” or to “roll with it”. Self reflection was

important, as was having someone external who could help a leader to see the bigger picture and to take a more “unemotive” view point as to what was going on within their team/company. Planning was seen as important and doing more of it than ever before. Many feel it is important to develop new/better leadership skills, to lead change and to get “stuff done”.

2. “Technology and the younger generation of workers is having a major impact”

Technology change and innovation is now affecting all leaders in some way. New cloud based software applications and mobile smart phones (and devices) are allowing for better information. This brings the challenge of training to use them effectively, integrating different software solutions and needing the work force to have different skill sets.

Change is constant and is both the opportunity and the challenge. Talent is hard to find, attract and retain and they expect different things. Collaboration (and a sense of fairness) is how young, smart, technology savvy employees work and thrive and this is now starting to show across the board. Challenging top talent, encouraging innovation and new ideas and building a high performing culture is key to retaining top people.

On top of that, holding employees accountable for doing what they say they will do and getting them to consistently be highly productive has been a big challenge in 2014. Learning new leadership skills, building cultures

14

Page 15: Smart Business - February 2015

15

that allow a “work/life” balance and training people has been a focus for many Chief Executives.

Dealing with non performers is recognised as critical, most want to be better at it and have a desire to weed out the “culture killers” faster than they currently do. out the “culture killers” faster than they currently do. The challenge of growing as a “leader” was referred to time and time again.

3. “What your client thinks and says about your company is critical to growth”

The last big theme to come through was reputation, brand strength and client loyalty. In an increasingly global economy and with the impact of social media, it is important to have people who love your products or services.

Many Chief Executives referred to “getting cut through” in a busy market, being close to key clients and asking them regularly for feedback. It was generally accepted that the future lies in the online, digital and social media space.Smart branding and immediate feedback (positive and negative) has a major impact on business growth.

Most Chief Executives want to get better in this space, many are very involved and some (approximately on third of respondents) felt they would never catch up or get ahead of the change in this space. Many felt that getting their culture right and having engaged and well trained people meant that clients would be taken care of. Also, there was a desire to be able to canvas clients more easily (for feedback) and to measure it.

What are the challenges you feel you will face as a Leader in 2015?

1. “The number one challenge is finding, recruiting, training and retaining top people”

By far, most respondents considered getting good people to join and stay with their company was the biggest challenge they feel they will face in 2015. Making it happen, improving recruitment, identifying top performers and then leading them is considered to be a major development area for the future of their organisation.

2. “Leading in uncertainty”

A big challenge in 2015 is being able to lead in uncertainty. How to lead young

people, other leaders and people in their team who are smarter and more tech-savvy during times of change and uncertainty is a concern of many respondents. Understanding how to motivate and lead, when the way ahead is unclear or simply unknown, is something many want to learn about. A fear of making big mistakes and a need for good advisers (financial, strategic, governance) was a major theme, as was the feeling that the leadership space is a lonely place.

Technology and the younger generation of workers is having a major impact. Having more mentors and people they can trust, as well as interaction with peers and other leaders in similar situations were identified as being of high value to them in 2015 and leading into the future. Delegating was also seen as being critical to growth in the year ahead, as was getting closer to customers and planning at the operational and strategic level.

3. “Focus and getting things done”

How to get “cut through” or “focus” is seen as being more and more important. 2015 will require more execution of the important things. Many want to spend more time planning and getting things done. Separating “the urgent” from “the important” is increasingly important to maximising production, resources and profitability. It is also becoming increasingly difficult to achieve. Focus on which customers to deal with, where and how to market and what technology tools to invest in are all seen as key to getting really clear on what needs to be done. Then the challenge is to actually “make it happen”.

These were the main feedback areas, though there were hundreds of other comments, thoughts and reflections - some themes that came through were:

A desire to have access to networks of like-minded people. Many are preparing for the next economic downturn and actively wanting to retain people & capability. Many are facing the challenge of remaining profitable and competitive, and the challenge of retaining and growing market share. Many are facing succession

challenges. Getting better governance was a theme - board level advice was seen as valuable. More planning and third party reviews. Specialist and generalist leadership training is in high demand. In fact a recognised need for training in general is constant. Learning to negotiate and lead in partnerships and in a more political (competitive) environment is needed by some. Delegating and learning to trust. Many Directors spoke of the need for them to get out of the way more - to let their people step up and own their roles.

The number one challenge is finding, recruiting, training and retaining top people. Overall this has been an interesting and humbling experience. It is a privilege to interact with clever and busy leaders and to hear their reflections and desires. It is useful for us as an organisation that “leads business leaders” because in effect it helps us to deliver better high value services which will truly support and assist those we work with. That said, most of the challenges identified here do not cost a lot of money, mainly requiring a focus on some of the leadership or “softer skills”. These are the ones that are least talked about and the least trained for. It requires some change to the way you may interact, spend your day as a Chief Executive or what you will measure and therefore manage.

So, what have you learnt in 2014 and what do you think you will face in 2015? Are you planning to succeed? Are you doing enough to stay ahead of change and technology, and do you really know what your clients think about you?

Gain more customers by making your website mobile friendly.

Contact us to improve your website. 0508 932 748 www.zeald.com/smartbiz

Mobile devices have changed the way consumers shop. Smartphones allow users to research products anytime, anywhere. According to the latest Our mobile planet Google report (May 2013), 74% of mobile users have researched a product or service on their phone. Plus, research that starts on a smartphone leads to purchases elsewhere, such as on a computer or in store.

The thing is your customers are already mobile, are you?

A bad mobile experience can cost you customers. Nearly half of mobile web users are unlikely to return to a website that they had trouble accessing from their phone, and 57% are unlikely to recommend the site.

You don’t want your customers to

become frustrated with your website, and turn to your competitor, because of a bad mobile experience.

The good news is that there is no longer a need for you to build an entirely different website for your customers to access your business via their smartphone or tablet. Zeald can build you a website using responsive design.

Responsive design is a way of designing websites so that they create the best user experience by automatically adapting to the screen size of the device used to visit your website. Responsive design makes your website user-friendly for a wide range of devices; whether you are using a large widescreen desktop, a laptop, tablet, smartphone or a device that hasn't been  invented yet.

Responsive design also uses the least amount of resources to make your website mobile friendly. It uses standard website technology, so you only have to build and maintain one website that understands how to respond to many devices.

When a customer uses their phone to view your website you don’t want them struggling to click on tiny links and missing important content because they didn’t scroll to the left or right. A responsive design website ensures navigation is simple; content is resized and prioritised.

To find out if responsive design is right for your business or how you can improve your sales through your website, contact Zeald today on 0508 932 748 for a free, no obligation consultation.
