Low Education Level in India : Major Reasons : PovertyThere are several reasons for the low

levels of literacy in India, not the least of which is the high level of poverty

Over one-third of the population is estimated to be living below the poverty line (The World Bank, 1997a).

Although school attendance is free, the costs of books, uniforms, and transportation to school can be too much for poor families

Facts of education in IndiaA major educational problem facing both

boys and girls in India is that although they may be enrolled at the beginning of the year they don’t always remain in school.

Reason for discontinuing educationIt is estimated that

45 percent of girls and 41 percent of boys drop out of school between grades 1 and 5 (The World Bank, 1997b).

Reason:

Un availability of resources for continuing basic education

How paper is prepared Paper is made by “PULP” of trees and for

getting pulp millions of trees cut every year which results deforestation

Deforestation results global warming, increasing pollution, reducing wild animals

Page 10: Small initiative for Improvement of Environment By Shrikant Kate.

No. of Trees cuts for making paper1 ton of uncoated virgin (non-recycled) printing and office

paper uses 24 trees 1 ton of 100% virgin (non-recycled) newsprint uses 12

trees A pallet of copier paper (20-lb. sheet weight, or 20#)

contains 40 cartons and weighs 1 ton. Therefore: 1 carton (10 reams) of 100% virgin copier paper uses 0.6

trees 1 tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper or 8,333.3 sheets

Page 11: Small initiative for Improvement of Environment By Shrikant Kate.

No. of Trees cut for making paper 1 ream (500 sheets) uses 6% of a tree (and those add up quickly!) 1 ton of coated, higher-end virgin magazine

paper (used for magazines like National Geographic and many others) uses a

little more than 15 trees (15.36) 1 ton of coated, lower-end virgin magazine

paper (used for newsmagazines and most catalogs uses nearly 8 trees (7.68)

Forest required for a districtAssuming one hectare of land have 500 trees For 38000 trees total land 38000/500 Total forest to be cut in each district 76 hectare76 hectare land will be deforest for one district every

year

Benefits If 50 % of old books are reused then ?Minimize deforestation and increase in forestland which

resulting, reduction in global warming. Increase in forest land will wild life as well as endanger

species tiger etcProduction of printing ink will reduce which result in

minimizing the chemical pollution, save power, which required for production of printing ink, also minimize the pollution due to printing ink factory.

Will save water required for production of printing ink.

Benefits As we know today education has become

professional and school management recommends costly new books only for getting 30 to 50% commission from publishers which is paid by parents, some times students who are unable to purchase costly books they left education and some goes in criminal activities. Reuse of books will avoid such circumstances.

By saving forest, emission of green house gasses can be reduce, this will help to get carbon credit resulting in financial support from international organization.

Proposed Schemes How we can implement :-1.Scheme No 1:- donating old books in the

school by pass out students, these books will be distributed to poor students free of cost which strengthen the act of Right to Education.
