Small Group Project
Instructor Approval Deadline: Monday, September 24, 2012
Presentation & Paper, Outline Submission Date: Monday, October 1 & Wednesday, October 3
Student Self Reflection Date: Wednesday, October 3
Worth: 50 (Paper 25 and Presentation 25)
Note: Makeup presentations, nor late papers will be accepted. Every group must submit their completed paper to
the instructor in order to present.
This is a group presentation and writing project. Your group will consist of approximately 4-5 preselected
people. Your assignment is to choose a movie that specifically focuses on an interpersonal relationship
between two people. The movie list is provided in this packet, and you must select one from this list. This
would be a good time to visit your local library to check it out. You should not have to spend money on
acquiring a movie. Once the group has selected their movie, it will then choose a specific communication
concept to analyze. Only one group can analyze one topic; no double topics will occur. Your presentation
and paper will be based off of the movie that you saw. Finally, each group is required to do outside research
concerning the concept that it chose. The following concepts are listed below.

4. Use your researched sources to support your thoughts about the concept and how it relates to the
characters.
CONCLUSION
1. What are your final thoughts based on your analysis?

Writing Assistance: If this is your first formal writing assignment, I strongly encourage you to visit the Writing
Center (CLO 265) prior to submission. This paper should be precise and clear. Wordiness, sloppy writing,
grammar/spelling mistakes and lack of proofreading will lower your group grade.
PRESENTATION GUIDELINES (25 POINTS)
Time
20-25 minutes in length; you will be timed. Going under/over time will result in a point deduction.
Requirements
One visual aid is required (poster board, electronic, etc). If you choose to use film clips, they cannot
exceed 5 minutes of the presentation.
Try to provide at least three specific examples from the movie to illustrate your understanding of the
concept and how it relates to the characters.
Evaluation the characters based on what you know about the concept.
Creatively present your communication concept and movie. Think outside the box. Game shows, talk
shows, skits, role playing, and other creative methods of presenting are welcomed. All group members must equally participate in the oral presentation.
All groups must present on their assigned day, or your group will receive a zero. The entire group is
responsible for the information inside the paper and in the presentation.
Image & Appearance
Be mindful of your eye contact, tone of voice, body language, and rate of speech.
Do not read your essay to the audience; it’s okay to use index cards or a sheet of paper to help keep you
on cue.
You should be able to freely elaborate on your topic because you know it so well.

Communication, Organization & Collaboration This project is preparing you for your future careers. You will have to clearly communicate in written and
verbal form to maintain a successful career. You must do the same in this project for it to be successful too. As
you work on this project, be sure to clearly and frequently communicate with your partners. You will have time
to work in class, and you will have to adjust your schedule to meet with your partners outside of class as well.
Let technology be your help; text messaging, emails, Skype, and short meetings are excellent ways to
communicate and collaborate. In the event a member of the group is ill or cannot participate in the presentation,
other group members are expected to cover the missing member’s information since this is a group project. The
group as a whole is responsible for the final products, and individual members should be knowledgeable about
the entire paper and presentation. All group members will receive the same grade.
TURKEY CLAUSE
If a group member does not participate in the project, the other members may invoke the “Turkey Clause.” The
Turkey Clause says that a group member may be dismissed from the project for absences from group meetings
or not accomplishing agreed upon tasks. Being dismissed from the project will result in a zero on the
assignment for that person. To invoke the Turkey Clause, ALL group members must agree and must get the
approval of the instructor. To invoke the Turkey Clause, the instructor must be notified no later than four days
before your presentation date.
