Exciting 4th of July Festivities
The RMGC Fourth of July Picnic has been a community staple for many years. Over the
years some details have changed, but the overall vision of family fun has always been
accomplished. This year is no different. Pictured above is the team of planners who have
worked for weeks and months to prepare for the community a fabulous Independence
Day. From left, from RMGC—Samantha Faga, Nicole Silberschlag, Haley Hastie, and
from the Town—Anne Hendrickson, and Karissa Brown. Not pictured are Pearl Olmedo
and Rebecca Hansen from the Town. Read more on pages 2 and 3.

July 4th Combined Committee Plans Holiday Weekend
On July 4, 1776, the final changes were made to the draft of the
Declaration of Independence that was adopted by America’s
Thirteen Colonies Second Continental Congress in Philadelph-
ia. This document formerly severed ties with Great Britain. One
year later, on July 4,
1777, Philadelphia
marked Independence
Day by adjourning Con-
gress and celebrating
with bonfires, bells and
fireworks. And the first
4th of July celebration
was born.
Two hundred and forty-
five years later Ameri-
cans celebrate Independence Day with family, friends, food and
fireworks. Not too different from the early Independence Day
celebrations. For a couple of decades, Kinross Round Mountain
has hosted a 4th of July Picnic in conjunction with holiday
events sponsored by the Town of Round Mountain. This year,
even more events were added to the days surrounding the 4th,
making it a holiday weekend celebration.
A committee of
RMGC employees
and Town of
Round Mountain
staff have been
meeting to plan
the weekend’s
festivities. Togeth-
er they created
events that are fun
for all ages. Com-
mittee member
Nicole Sil-
berschlag said, “I
think the biggest
thing we have
worked on is get-
ting other parts of
our community involved. We wanted to celebrate over the
weekend instead of just one day,” she said. Nicole admits that
with all the extra work of incorporating more events over more
days it wasn’t sustainable for just the three RMGC team mem-
bers so they invited the community to join in. “We’ve added in
the softball and kickball tournaments and a glow run that will be
in collaboration with the town, a Mr. and Miss Kinross pageant
hosted with the library, a night golf tournament with the golf
course team and even a mud volleyball tournament,” she add-
ed.
While the addition of mud volleyball and kickball tournaments,
picnic goers can enjoy some of the old favorites. “Some old
favorites coming back will be the midway games, gold panning,
bounce houses, and bingo,” said RMGC Social Responsibility
Coordinator Samantha Faga. “Some new exciting additions will
be laser tag, rock wall,
live music, corn hole, a
petting zoo, and new
exciting food vendors,”
she added. Sam contin-
ued that everyone loves
the 4th of July Picnic and
that they have been such
a huge success in the
past, but after a year of
COVID lockdown the
committee knew they
needed to add a little spice to the festivities.
The Town is planning some activities as well. The Glow Run,
the Softball and Kickball Tournaments, the parade and fire-
works are all coordinated by the Town. Recreation Director
Anne Hendrickson is excited to bring more events over the
holiday weekend. “We will be having a glow run at the golf
course on the 3rd,”
she said. “We en-
courage everyone
to glow it up! Use
paint, glow sticks,
whatever you
have!” she added.
Anne also encour-
aged everyone
who is playing
softball and kick-
ball to incorporate
this year’s holiday
theme Freedom is
Gold into their
uniforms. The
Town held a con-
test to choose the
theme of this
year’s 4th of July festivities. The winner of the theme contest
was Cathleen Rumker with Freedom is Gold.
No matter what events are planned, the 4th of July in Round
Mountain is always memorable and family oriented. “Putting
people first is one of our Core Values and there is no better
way to do that than by providing a venue where our community
can come together. Our local employees, their families, and
their memories are our biggest 4th of July priority,” said Haley
Hastie, HR Generalist and Planning Committee member.
This is my first time on this committee, but I can see these rela-
tionships (with the Town and other community members) being
helpful for future activities and planning. It’s really refreshing to
see the acceptance of new ideas and wanting to really take all of
our events to the next level. This is a really proud dynamic team
we are building from the library to the town employees all the
way to the FFA. I think everyone is looking forward to something
normal and what a great way to celebrate! It will take all of us
pitching in and putting in a little bit of work to make
this sustainable for the future.
