SMA1/4UC, Marconis new, cost-effective, multiservice,
metro edge device
Evolution at the network edge
SMA1/4UC Data Sheet
With networks in transition from voice to data, a
device that can enable the change seamlessly byfunctioning effectively in both domains is a key benefit.SMA1/4UC is such a device, using the resilience ofSDH to deliver both Ethernet and PDH services cost-effectively in metro edge/access network applications.
The versatility and integration of SMA1/4UC
creates a simple, low-cost unit for network
edge and premium-customer applications.
Sharing cards with our Series 4 range, and
making use of small-form-factor-pluggable
optical interfaces on line and data interfaces, means that the operational benefits are
equally compelling.
Key benefits
Low first-in cost
Equally cost-effective for growth in data or
narrowband traffic
Operating at STM-1 or STM-4 in rings,point-to-point or hubbing applications

Applications
Multiservice delivery platform
SMA1/4UC constructs multiservice delivery
rings or spurs operating at STM-1 or STM-4.
The high-capacity switch and high-density
interfaces provide low-cost hubbing nodes
where consolidation close to the edge of the
network increases the efficiency of the higher
layers.
Multi-tenant buildings
In multi-tenancy buildings, on business parks
or campuses, SMA1/4UC distributes multiple
services from the existing SDH infrastructure
either as a hub, in customer rings or in dual-parenting loops. Where data security is a
strong consideration, SMA1/4UC provides
low-cost rings with nodes hubbing from
suitable roadside cabinets, or from operator-
controlled equipment rooms, to terminal units
inside the customer premises.
Fixed and mobile radio backhaul
In fixed and mobile radio applications,
SMA1/4UC ensures economical backhaul
solutions, as a very compact (6U) device with
high-density 2 Mbit/s interfaces and with
STM-1 electrical SFP line interfaces reducing
interfacing costs in the associated radio
equipment.
Major customer premises
The SMA1/4UC provides an economical yet
flexible solution for premium customers with
the need for service variety coupled with high
levels of security. It delivers a wide range ofservices including Ethernet LAN, 2 Mbit/s
and other PDH circuits, together with STM-1
and STM-4. With card/unit protection
supplementing network protection, and with
a subrack that can be mounted vertically or
horizontally, SMA1/4UC provides high levels
of functionality whilst making best use of
available space.
The SMA1/4UC is suited to the delivery of both dataand TDM services in varying volume and mix

Key features
Data
The PacketSpan range of Ethernet tributaries
gives access to revenues for the provision of
Ethernet services: Ethernet Private Line,Ethernet Virtual Private Line, Ethernet Virtual
Private LAN and Ethernet Internet Access. A
PacketSpan tributary card also provides
Layer 2 aggregation into a Gigabit Ethernet
port. SMA1/4UC can also act as a hub for
optical Ethernet distribution. The platform
has the capability to deliver up to
16 x 10/100M Ethernet ports together with
63 x 2 Mbit/s into an STM-4 ring, resulting in
a very low cost per interface.
VC-12 switch capability
The SMA1/4UC has a high-capacity VC-12
switch (26 x STM-1) providing the flexibility ofhigh-hubbing capacity in a very small, low-
cost package.
SFPs hot-pluggable for convenience
and flexibility
SFPs provide a rugged solution for reliable
installation and upgrade. They also offer
increased flexibility plug any interface into
the line aggregate socket on card:
STM-1 (S1.1, L1.1 or L1.2)
STM-1 electrical
STM-4 (S4.1, L4.1 or L4.2)
The same SFPs are used throughout our
portfolio of next-generation SDH platforms,
resulting in reduced inventory cost and
spares holding.
In-service upgrade
To relieve bandwidth bottlenecks without
installing new equipment, SMA1/4UC can be
upgraded from STM-1 to STM-4 in service
and with significantly reduced installation
time due to the use of SFP interfaces offering
savings in time and incremental cost.
An additional SFP interface can easily be
added incrementally to a core card to act asa tributary, or in an LTE application to add
line protection in customer premises.
Tandem Connection Monitoring
TCM provides valuable performance visibility
for the monitoring of connections between
operator boundaries. This also offers faster
location of faults through isolation of
problems to particular network segments.
Data Communications Network
Solutions
SMA1/4UC has two options that allow
management of DCN communications
without the need for external network
equipment.
For remote management of SMA island
networks, the VC-4 path overhead
(F2 byte) provides a management
communications channel across an Other
Licensed Operator network.
For remote management of third-party
equipment, IP tunnelling provides a
management channel via an auxiliary
Ethernet port.
Protection
The SMA1/4UC provides a range of
equipment and traffic protection options,
including:
Network protection, SDH line and
tributary
MSP protection
Sub-Network Connection protection
Card protection
Core switch/line unit
SDH & PDH tributaries 1+1
System architecture
Each powerful core module provides a
housing for two STM-1 or STM-4 SFP
line interfaces and a full-connectivity
VC-12/VC-3/VC-4 switch with 26 x STM-1
equivalent capacity.
Cross-connection may be between line and
line, between line and tributary or between
tributary and tributary.
Configuration, performance, error and alarm
monitoring are available centrally via the
network management system or locally via
the Local Craft Terminal.
Access and security management can be
programmed to provide various levels of
operator access.
Embedded software can be downloaded for
feature enhancement in service. In addition,
the multiplexers can report details of their
inventory status from non-volatile memory,
either locally or remotely.Mechanical description
The subrack can be mounted vertically or
horizontally with a plug-in fan tray used in the
horizontal position. Horizontally mounted, the
6U height is a major advantage where space
is at a premium.
The subrack, with its integrated line and core
units, can provide a protected STM-1 or
STM-4 ADM system and accommodate
various combinations of line and tributary
cards. All external connections are front-
access for ease of installation and
maintenance.
Each module within the shelf has its own
front panel for robustness, whilst meeting the
necessary EC directives for EMC and ESD
compliance.
Mounting options
one vertically
two side-by-side
one horizontally in a 6U high slot
