Happy New Year to All,

It seems like a long period of time has elapsed since our last meeting. For those who couldn’t make our November meeting, Mike Gibbons, Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Global Forensics and Dispute Services, provided our dinner topic, “New Cyber Threats Need New Planning Strategies” and Michael Porier from Protiviti provided our PD session, “Business Continuity-lessons learned and current trends”. While some businesses think they might be immune to cyber issues, the recent credit card issues at Target Dept Stores reminds all of us that this is a very real issue in today’s electronic

world. Thanks again to all of these folks for taking the time from their busy schedules to meet with our group.

As previously broadcast, we held our annual Sponsor Appreciation Event in December at the beautifully decorated Houston Country Club and opened the event to our sponsors, Board, Committee Chairs and our members who registered before our cut-off date. We had a wonderful turn-out and the sponsor feedback was great. Thanks to Joe Abel who coordinated this event.

Our chapter incorporated itself early in the fall and the Board has adopted and agreed a new set of bylaws for our chapter. Please take the opportunity to read and familiarize yourself with our bylaws as they have been posted to our website and will remain there with all governing and appropriate documents. Thanks to Victor Elgohary for implementing the incorporation process and for Bruce Misamore, Chuck Fischer and Victor for moving the bylaw process forward to completion.

Our Financial Scholarship Foundation luncheon, hosted by Halliburton, was held in mid November and was attended by the Deans from the 12 universities whose accounting and finance students are recipients of the Foundations’ scholarship awards ($4,000/student) along with FSF Board, FEI Board and other chapter members. This luncheon was a great success. Thanks to Mark Haukohl and his Board for coordinating this event. And thanks to our membership for your continued financial support to our Foundation.

Our annual Wine Dinner for members/spouses/dates is just around the corner and you should have received a “save the date” before Christmas. Mark your calendar to reserve Saturday February 8, 2014. This year’s event will be held at the Hilton Americas Hotel in downtown Houston, in the spectacular Skyline Room. Hors D’Oeuvres will be served at 6:30pm (with sparkling wine), and the formal four-course dinner (with paired wines) will be served at 7:30pm. Complimentary valet parking will be provided. If you wish to spend the evening in the Hotel, a block of rooms have been reserved at a discounted rate. Black tie optional. Thanks to Jim Davis and his wife, Diane, for chairing and coordinating this wonderful event.

If you haven’t registered for our January 21st meeting, please visit our website at www.feihouston.org and do so. We have another great program planned with Chris LaFollette, partner in charge of the Houston office of Akin Gump who will be our dinner speaker discussing SEC hot topics. Hein and Associated will provide our Professional Development session. Both of these are timely since many of our members are integral in their firm’s SEC 10-K filings in the first quarter.

Our sincere thanks to Hein and Associates who is our platinum dinner sponsor and to Wells Fargo, who is our gold social hour sponsor for our January meeting. Without the generous support of our sponsors, who contribute money, time, in-kind donations, and ideas to our chapter, we could not accomplish what we do each year. Please give our sponsors preference when needing business services from these valuable partners.

I continue to encourage each of you to get involved with the chapter. Many of the successful chapters build a “bench” to ensure continuity from year to year and it helps to spread the work around. We will not throw you into the deep end and it’s a great way to get involved and fellowship with our group.

As always, please let us know what we as a chapter can do for you.

Regards,

Phil Denning, FEI Houston President

Successful 2013 Academic Deans’ LuncheonThe 2013 Academic Deans’ Luncheon, sponsored by Halliburton and facilitated by the FEI Scholar-ship Foundation and Academic Honors Committee, proved to be a major success in November. University Deans, Associate Deans and Senior Faculty attended from the 12 local Business Schools awarded FEI Aca-demic Scholarships, plus Senior Halliburton Finan-cial Executives and Senior FEI Chapter members. The purpose was to further develop relationships with Business School leaders and explore opportunities for internships, mentoring and permanent positions for local university finance and accounting students. Excellent support was received from Halliburton who are sponsoring this event for three years. The Busi-ness School Deans continue to consider involvement with the FEI to be a major positive influence on their programs and students. Thanks to all who attended and worked hard to make the event such a success.
