PURPOSE: LiuBei wanted a war against Cao Cao in order to save the lives of thousands of

peasants, old men and women, children from the atrocious nature of Cao Cao.

STRENGTH:

Able leadership of LiuBei, efficient strategist Zhu-Ge-Liang and brave ambitious and

fearless warriors like General Zhao Zilong, General Zhang and General Guanyu .

High morale of the soldiers of LiuBei.

WEAKNESSES:

Less army as compared to the opponent.

Less naval troops.

EXTERNAL SCANNING:

PURPOSE: From the point of view of Cao Cao he had no justifiable reason to declare the war

against his opponents except for winning over his age over love Sun Shang Xiang who wasmarried to Viceroy Zhou Yu. Once he’ll be able to conquer Wu region then only he’ll be able to

marry his age old love.

OPPORTUNITIES:

Tieing up with Sun Quan because he had the wealth and strength to fight against Cao

Cao.

Once they form an alliance with Sun Quan and win the south Land they will move

towards west and reinforce themselves there. In this way the power shall be divided and it

will be the only way to stop Cao Cao invasion

Cao Cao army largely consisted of surrendered troops which he considered to be

untrustworthy. This could be an opportunity for the opponent to win over these troops.

THREATS:

Enemies strength was greater than what they anticipated. It was about 800 thousand

soldiers.

Chances of internal conflicts arose.

STAGE II:

FORMULATION:

Initially the Chief strategist identify the wedge formation of the enemy. In order to

counter this they made a tactic of reflecting light into the enemies eyes with the help of

shields to hold them back.

The other major formulations were the strategic alliances which both the armies formed

in order to have a competitive advantage.

FOR CAO CAO:

He formed a strategic alliance with General Cai who was offering him 300 thousand naval troops

and 2000 battleships and boats of various sizes. Moreover general Cai was a southerner so he

was familiar with the southern Terrains, winds and tides.

FOR LIUBEI:

The Chief Strategist identified the importance of entering into Alliance with Sun Quan. As it will

provide them with the necessary resources and strengthen their alliance . they had the knowledge

of Yantgze river and had naval expertise. This would help them in counter attacking their

opponents. He convinced Sun Quan to bring out his hidden abilities and prove to the world that

surrendering is not matter of victory or defeat but rather one of virtue.

STAGE III:

STRATEGIC CHOICE:

The first issue involved was on Sun Quan’s part whether he wanted to

fight or surrender to cao cao keeping in mind the comparative

difference in the number of troops.

The second issue is Strategic Leadership that is how successful would

be the combination of Chief Strategist and the Viceroy in Chief would

be.

The third issue was whether they should go for the Naval war or the

war between the cavalries.

The fourth issue consisted of what kind of formation they should use.

Goose formation was outdated and they had to search for some otheralternative.

STAGE IV:

STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION:

Once they had united their hands together, it was the time to implement their strategies . It was

perceived by Viceroy in chief that Cao Cao would attack on land. So it was the time to counter

the enemies action. Princess Sun Shang Xiang led a team of young and ambitious femalewarriors and dodged the enemies and misled them to the tortoise formation where they were able

to trap the enemy leaving no way for exist.
