SCAMS

cam is a term used to describe fraudulent tricks performed by a dishonest individual, group, or company in an attempt to obtain money or something of value from an unsuspecting individual.

Over the years the internet has been used as a platform for scammers to carry out their various activities almost undetected and they have introduced various forms of scams such as lottery scams, scam baiting, email spoofing, phishing, or request for aid. These could be considered as email frauds.

In a recent development in the banking industry, BVN(Bank Verification Number) was introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria, mandating all banks in Nigeria to register all customers both old and new in the BVN exercise. Unfortunately, some scammers now use this (BVN) as a new platform to exploit bank customers. In this article, we have indicated steps to avoid being scammed.

If you patronize online banking ensure you do not

reveal your banking password, token response and ATM PIN to a third party. You are adviced not to respond to suspicious calls, mails or letters requesting your banking details. These messages are often fraudulent and are generally not from your bank.

Of recent, activities of scammers requesting BVN holders to click on links in mails to update their BVN are common. Whenever you receive such emails, it is important you do not click on any link asking you to update or disclose your sensitive personal banking details. Your bank may never call you or send you an email or sms requesting you to update your information, either via links or over the phone. If you receive any communication that you are unsure of, it is advisable you stop further communication and then proceed to contact your bank immedaitely.

Finally, It is also advisable you never generate a token number or passcode by means of telephone, e-mail or internet chat.

Keeping these few tips in mind will keep you informed of scammers activities and how to not fall victim.

A 19-year-old, Miss Vivian Onyemaechi, from Delta State has

emerged the overall winner of Lenovo national promo which lasted for 60 days, from December 1, 2015 to January 31, 2016.

Onyemaechi, an undergraduate, who was represented by Nnamdi Marcellinus, took home the star prize of Kia Rio Car, beating five other finalists who received consolation prizes.

The promo had a total of 5,833 entries from over 50 SLOT outlets across the country. An educational grant of N200, 000 was given to each of the ten (10) other winners who emerged at the draw.

There were 50 others consolation prizes consisting of tablets, smartphones, deep freezers, fridges and blenders.

Have you ever tried to make an important call or send an email on your

smartphone and suddenly your phone goes off because of insufficient battery life?

Here are some essential tips on how you can conserve your smartphone battery.

Try to dim the screen brightness of your phone as low as possible and turn off the Automatic Brightness. This can add some hours of life to the battery as the display functions on smartphones is probably the biggest source of drain to the battery.

Avoid full charge and full discharge of your phone battery as this can damage the battery.

Turn off unnecessary hardware radios such as LTE, NFC, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth when not in use.

Try to switch off the vibrate function on your phone, using just the ring tone

Close apps running in the background on the phone and turn off app notifications.

Ensure the phone is stored in a cool environment.

If possible, get a spare battery on standby should you wish to go through a busy day with your smartphone. Having two batteries will certainly get you through the longest day and maybe two days without charging.
