Slope and One Point
P (3,2) ; m = 1/2
P (2,2) ; m = 3/4
Positive Slope in Fraction
Form and Y - Intercept
Any line in the coordinate plane has y-intercept b if it intersects the y-axis at a point (0,b). Therefore the graph of linear function can also be drawn if the y-intercept b and the slope m are given.
The y-intercept or b has the coordinate (o,b).
The slope or m, on the other hand, is the rise and run, and often written in fraction form.
Example # 1
b = 2 ; m = 4/3
Locate the y-intercept in the y-axis.
Step 1
With the intercept as the starting point, determine another point using the given slope.
Step 2
Connect points to obtain the graph of linear function.
Step 3
Example # 2
b = -3 ; m = 2/3
Example # 3
b = -4 ; m = 6/5
Example # 4
b = 3 ; m = 4/3
Directions: Graph the linear function using the given slopes and y-intercepts. What shape is formed from the different lines?
1.) b = 3 ; m = 3/4
2.) b = 0 ; m = 7/5
3.) b = -3 ; m = 7/3
4.) b = 5 ; m = 2/6
Directions: Plot the given slopes and points on the Cartesian plane. Write the coordinates of the new points formed.
1. b = -2 ; m = 3/72. b = -4 ; m = 5/83. b = 1 ; m = 4/5
