• 1941 Slovenian foresters (Sotošek, Sevnik, Miklavţič, Ţumer, Čokl, Šivic,....) recommended the establishment of a forestry research institution for the first time, based on the results of the inquiry: State of Forestry in Slovenia, 1941)

• 1947 The Forestry Institute of Slovenia (26 April 1947, Official gazette, PR Slovenija) Construction 1947-1956. Experimental nursery under Roţnik, 13 research stations in Slovenia. The central forest library was established. The activities of the Institute were divided into six sections.

• 1952 The Institute for Forest and Wood Industry of the Peoples Republic of Slovenia The institute was joined to the Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry. 4 research stations in Slovenia, 161 research plots. Organisational scheme: nine sections.

1954 Institute for Forest and Wood Economics of the Peoples Republic of Slovenia. The western section of the Institute was built. Organisational scheme: two departments (for forest and for wood economics) with relevant sections.

1956 The construction of the building was completed.

1957 Some staff from the Faculty of Forestry moved into the building as well. The organizational scheme was the same as in 1954, while the number of employees increased significantly.

1961 The establishment of very close co-operation between the Institute and forestry enterprises.

1964 The Chamber of Economics of Slovenia had resigned as a founder of the Institute already in 1961. All foundation rights were assumed by the Biotechnical Faculty. Organizational scheme: the departments were abolished, all activities were performed within eleven sections.

1968 Institute for Forest and Wood Economy of the Biotechnical Faculty. The foundation rights were split between the Biotechnical Faculty and the Business Association of Forest Enterprises of Slovenia.

1971 Institute for Forest and Wood Economy at the Biotechnical Faculty. Co-operation between the Institute and Forestry Department of the Biotechnical Faculty began to strengthen. The research work by experts at forestry enterprises was intensified.

1982 The Department of Forestry at the Biotechnical Faculty, which had been closely connected to the Institute's research programme, attained independence in the field of research. Organisational scheme: the research work of the Institute was organised by projects, which encompassed all-inclusive thematic and problematic fields with corresponding long-term research goals.

Forest Act, 1993: The Slovenian Forestry Institute.

The foundation rights were returned to the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.

The Institute is a legal entity, having the status of a public institution.

The Institute performs research work in the fields of forests, forestry, wildlife and game management.

The organisational scheme 1994: the Institute was divided into three departments and a Computer centre.

The organisational scheme 2008: Six R&D Department with related Laboratories (Infrastuctural unit, jan. 2009)
