RibbetEvery four years the Republicans and Democrats get ready for an elec-
tion year. Not so with Maverick Region - every year is an election
year for us. As an early reminder nominations shall be in order in
October with elections following in November. Nominations and subse-
quent voting are your club responsibility. Non-participants in this
Democratic process have no room for complaints concerning choices of
administration for the next year. Put on your thinking caps and have
your nominees ready for October.
It was with regret that I received a resignation recently from John &
Diane Etzel, our Slipstream Editors. For the first half of this year
they had done yoeman duty in this difficult position. Thanks to them
for a job well done and congratulations to the new parents of son,Karl (8 lbs. and 2 ozs). Until a suitable replacement can be re-
cruited, please bear with us.
If you change your address, please notify the Slipstream office, Box
17483, Fort Worth, 76102. Without this information we cannot find you
and besides at $0.10 per returned Slipstream, I'm going broke. Help'
Plans are being finalized for Octoberfest, (at Forest Lane Porsche-Audi), 28 October and a wine tasting on 13 October. No formal dinnershall be served at the wine tasting event and chances are good thatthe location shall be other than our regular meeting place. Consultnext month's Slipstream for complete details.
The Telephone Committee has not been pressed into service this monthfor several reasons. If you have comments, good or bad, concerningthis service to members, please contact Chee Rickets, Chairwoman ofthe Committee or this writer.

Singing PorschesEverywhere there were Porsche cars singing their way along back
woodsy roads in search of a tune that would bring them some gold.
This was the way it was, Sunday the 27th.
It all began with Nancy and Richard Corbeille in the Forum 303 parking
lot. They were responsible for the "Bouncing Balls" that afternoon;
it was up to the Mavericks to follow them. The Rallye took the parti-
cipants into the country side where they could openerr up" and take
the banked corners "flat out". Along the way the rallyists were sup-
posed to spot pie plates with musical notes on them. If he or she was
on course, a few bars of "Theme From Romeo And Juliet" (not Love Story,Harold and Pam) became apparent on the score sheet. However, if the
Rallye team strayed off course, a mirage of sharps and flats gave the
tune an air of modern day hardrock. (Sharps, flats and whole notes, when appearing on the score sheet, denoted an offcourse excusion to
the Rallyemaster, but not apparent to the Rallyists! Ed.)
At the end of the Rallye, awaiting the tired and hoarse country sing-
ers, was a barbecue party hosted by the gracious Laughlin family of
Gary, Vivian and Daughters. The courtyard setting was typically
German with Gary's fleet of BMW's, VW, and Porsche, surrounded by some
30 other Porsches. We certainly owe our thanks to the Laughlins for
opening their house to us.
At the end of a great evening, congratulations went to the top "Sing-
ers" of the day: Charlie Davis and Barbara Smith with the most
correct notes. Following them were the duets of Roger Chaney and Don
Spaulding and Ken and Patti Kenyon. Their trophies will be awarded
at the September meeting.
This event was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Maverick Region
1972 with 64 participants. Again our thanks to Dan Dudley, Karl
Karbach and Charles McFarland of Mountain Creek Rallye Club, for a fine
event.

Buenos DiasI'm afraid it doesn't take much prodding to get me to any event wherefood and drink are involved, so when the get together at Joe T.
Garcia's with the Vette folks was proposed I knew right away that I'd
have to make it to this one. Although the plan to caravan to Joe T.'s
sounded like fun, the idea of driving all the way from far west Fort
Worth to Grand Prairie just to come back to Fort Worth sounded a
little crazy so I'll have to assume the caravan attracted attention.
We went straight to Joe's to discover just three other Porsches and a
pile of Corvettes. Now, we had never been to Joe T.'s before but I
already knew what to expect the neighborhood to be like (that's why we
had never been before). This time, though, we figured one little un-
obtrusive 912 wouldn't be near as enticing as a red, white and blue
Corvette or a $500 set of factory alloy wheels. Besides, there was go-
ing to be a guard, right? Wrong. At least not where we could see him
when we pulled in. Anyway, drawn ever onward by the magnetic prospect
of beer and Nachos, we proceeded to the pool area.
Surprise number one, it is really nice. I was definitely impressed
with the patio and pool area, especially after first sight of the
place. The Corvette people apparently had gotten a head start at the
bar and bodies were being flug into the pool as fast as they could be
captured. I quickly spotted an unusually dry group (water not
alcohol) and, sure enough, it was the PCA-MR contingent. We were not
immune to the baptizing disease, however, as our Prez found out upon
his arrival.
Surprise number two, rain. Not just a little rain, a lot of rain. By
this time, however, most everyone was wet anyway so it didn't much
matter. Except that when the rains came the Joe T. Garcia personnel
disappeared. Bar closed (keg was open), Nachos stopped appearing, all
J. T. folks into the house. Once again, however, our alert Presidentdemonstrated his leadership ability and pretty soon the P.C.A. crowd
was in an unattended kitchen making Nachos like Nachos should be made.
Shortly thereafter, dinner was announced and we adjourned to the din-ing room. About this time more Porsche people started appearing and
before long the turnout looked nearly even for both clubs. The food
was just as Barry had implied, it was great.
All in all, it was a good event, especially for those of us who like
to eat. Muchos Gracias to Green Oaks Porsche-Audi for the beer.

Rol,Some physical concepts are difficult to accept and understand. Astatement made at one of the Technical Seminars at Lake Geneva, pro-posed that one of the reasons that Porsches are often sold withoutanti-sway bar(s) is that they develop higher cornering forces thatway! The explanation was that normal street tires (even though theyare radials) tend to roll under and lift the inside edge of the con-tact patch at high cornering forces. By allowing the car to roll, the outside wheels undergo negative camber changes which results inless tire roll. The difference between a Porsche without anti-swaybars and one with them is slight, with regards to cornering forces.
This concept was apparently difficult for the audience to accept andproduced much discussion. The explanation which was next fielded wasa shocker! Most drivers can develop higher cornering forces withanti-sway bars on their Porsches: They are supposed to feel more se-cure that way. This is true of even the best drivers.
Thus the Psychological concept that your Porsche should be "set-up"so that you, the driver, can function optimally. This may result ina "funny" handling car, but if you like it, leave it that way. Yourmental condition is more important than the physical configuration ofyour Porsche.
Charles Davis
Roll OnThe presence of stabilizer bars (also called anti-sway or anti-roll
bars) in a Porsche suspension is an important element for any type ofhard driving. A stabilizer bar is a piece of steel that links thefront wheels (or rear wheels) together in such a way that when onewheel is pushed up into the fender well, the other wheel is subjectedto force in the same direction. When the left wheel moves upward, theleft arm of the stabilizer bar also moved upward, causing the bar torotate and lift the right arm. If both wheels are being deflected, asthey would be when hitting a bump, the bar has no effect. However, ifthe car is leaning as in a corner, one wheel is moving up while theother is going down. During a right hand corner, the right wheel isbeing forced downward by its spring or torsion bar and resists beingforced upward by the right arm of the stabilizer bar. This resistanceis transferred to the left wheel by the bar and decreases the degreeof body roll.
8
The purpose of stabilizer bars is twofold, to increase roll stiffness
and to permit 'chassis tuning' between the front and rear suspensions.
Roll stiffness is desirable because it causes the car to respond more
quickly to steering input. The car reaches its suspension configura-
tion for maximum cornering force sooner because it doesn't have to
roll as far. Also, increased roll stiffness keeps the car closer to
level and allows the suspension geometry to keep the maximum amount of
tire tread on the ground.
Chassis turning is the other benefit of stabilizer bars. If you
picture a car as a rectangle with a wheel at each corner, it would be
level when going straight, but when cornering, the rectangle would be
leaning with the outside wheels supporting most of the weight. Now,if
you lift the low front corner of the rectangle - the rear corner will
move down. The low front corner is effectively lifted up by increas-
ing the size of the front stabilizer. By so doing, the outside (low)
front wheel must carry an increased load but the weight distribution
between the rear wheels is made more even. Since the traction avail-
able from a pair of wheels (front or rear) decreases as the weight
distribution shifts to one side, the result of increasing the size of
the front stabilizer bar is to decrease traction in the front while
increasing traction in the rear. Exactly what you do to reduce over-
steer of a 356.
-- Torsion ber"A" crams
4 D - "eelStabilizer bar
Now, what would have happened if the rectangle had flexed? The
effect of a larger front sway bar would have been drastically reduced.
In fact, the Targa and 914 flex so easily that chassis tuning is all
but impossible in stock configuration. In addition to stiffness, a
further requirement for a tunable chassis is a predictable spring rate
or torsion bar stiffness. What I am leading up to is that the hydro-
elastic front suspension in 1969 and later 'comfort group' cars is not
suited for hard driving, much less competition. The front struts are
so unpredictable that one of our member's car went up on two wheels in
an autocross and later got dangerously close to rolling over on an
otherwise normal corner at driver's school. Several other comfort
group cars have had similar experiences. It is sad that Porsche has
produced a suspension that is unsafe under hard cornering. The normal
suspension parts can be ordered but unfortunately many sets are back
ordered for other Porsche pushers who would rather switch than roll.
9
Getting back to real Porsches, the following is presented as an em-
pirical guide to sway bar sizes based on autocross competition. Porsche
356: stock bar 16mm front only, recommend change to 19mm. Porsche 911-
912, '65-'68: 13-14mm front bar only is OK; 14-15mm front bar with 15mmrear bar; 16-17mm front with 16mm rear. Porsche 911, '69-'71 with
longer wheelbase: 12-13mm front bar only is OK; 14-15mm front with 15mm
rear; 15-16mm front with 16mm rear.
Note: The B&B 19mm rear bar is approximately equivalent to a 16mm fac-
tory bar because the arm lengths are different.

Being a single marque club, PCA-MR does not have entrants for the
sedan classes and a couple of sports car classes. Also, we do not
have nearly the overall participation as E/R has. However, with one
exception, in the classes in which we compete, we do extremely well as
the index shows. The one exception is Class C which should be 911
territory, but isn't. The class is composed of 240z's and Datsun 2000
cc Roadsters now. If you can't beat them, you spent $4000. too much.

That Other CarThe people at Green Oaks Porsche-Audi recently raffled-off the use of
several Audies for a three-day test drive by PCAers. In order to re-late to the membership the reactions and opinions of the drivers of
these cars, I have conducted a survey. When asked what they liked
most about the car, the drivers said it was a very comfortable car to
drive. The exceptional handling and general body integrity seemed to
instill confidence in the driver. The car had excellent brakes and was
a good highway car giving good gas mileage.
The bad points of the car were not as well defined. Several complain-
ed of poor engine tune resulting in hard starting, stalling, rough
idle and poor performance. The rocker switches on the dash seemed
confusing because of poor placement and lack of illumination at night.
Other complaints, each mentioned by no more than one driver, were
wheel imbalance, weak shocks, seat belt and seat belt buzzer malfunc-
tion, poor instrumentation, brake noise, poor air conditioning, poor
interior lighting, hard low-speed steering, poor placement of outside
rear-view mirror and too much cheap-looking plastic used in the car.
When asked to rate several features of the car from 1-10 (1-poor, 10-excellent) the drivers rated the car as follows:
8.4 - Body integrity 6.9 - Transmission8.4 - Comfort 6.8 - Engine Starting8.2 - Seat Belt & Harness 6.7 - Acceleration
8.2 - Brakes 6.3 - Engine Response8.1 - Radio 6.1 - Tires
