Melinda Adams is an inspiration, this bright bubbly
42-year-old took on the challenge of losing almost two-
thirds of her body weight and she’s winning.
Melinda Adams was an average sized baby who rapidly
gained weight in childhood and continued to do so as a
teenager and as an adult. Melinda says she didn’t eat vast
quantities of junk food or drink litres of sugary soft drinks
but she did eat large portions of food. “I obviously ate
more than I needed but I didn’t eat the amounts of food
most people associate with obesity,” she says.
“I come from a big family, my mum and dad struggled with
weight issues and other family members have problems
with their weight. Whether the problem is genetic or not
is irrelevant, I just wanted to get my weight under control.
My weight loss journey hasn’t been easy but the end of
the road is now in sight,” she says.
At 172cm (five foot eight inches) Melinda is taller
than average. Her weight billowed to 215 kilos, the
recommended height to weight ratio shows Melinda
should be around 75 kilos. Melinda says she tried every
method of losing weight and had some success with Jenni
Craig. “I went from 120 kilos to 85 kilos on the program
but I gained it all again, and then some,” she says.
“My problem is hunger; I would wake up hungry and eat a
big bowl of cereal. By mid-morning I would be ravenous.
Lunch would be a big meal, followed by afternoon tea and
a large serving of whatever was for dinner. I don’t have
food cravings although I do love chocolate and cheese.
My only issue was constant hunger and I eventually made
the decision to have lap band surgery,” she says.
A series of serious health issues saw Melinda spend time
in hospital. She had to cut short a trip to Peru and return
home to the Gold Coast for medical treatment. “I had an
infection in the soft tissue of my legs. It was exacerbated
by poor circulation, a common problem in seriously
overweight people,” she says.
“I had looked at the possibilities of lap band surgery when
I lived on the Gold Coast and later when I was based in
Brisbane. I was more than a little nervous until I discovered
Dr Layani’s Weightloss Solutions Australia. The circle of
care concept made me feel more comfortable. I went
along to a free seminar to explore the possibilities further.
“The Weightloss Solutions Australia team made me feel
welcome and cared for. The treatment went beyond
surgery and included the support of a nurse, a dietitian
and a psychologist. I had the lap band surgery in 2004
and have so far lost 120 kilos. I was 215 kilos at my
heaviest and now weigh 95 kilos. This weight loss saved
and changed my life,” she says.
Melinda didn’t let her excess weight control her life; she
has travelled all over the world and lived in London for a
few years. “I trained as a home economics teacher but
didn’t take up teaching as a career,” she says.

“While I was still at school and later at
university, I worked with a friend’s mum
who made beautiful bridal gowns. What she
taught me set the foundation for a career as a
couture seamstress,” Melinda says.
“In London I worked for prestigious couture
houses and helped create gowns for Princess
Diana and the Queen. I used to make my own
clothes when I was so big it was impossible
to buy anything, now I am a shopaholic. I now
wear a size 18, sometimes a 16. I have so
many clothes but they are interim clothes.
“As my weight loss journey continues, I buy
smaller and smaller sizes. My regular support
consultations at Weightloss Solutions Australia
at the John Flynn Hospital have become
something of a fashion exchange. I give my
larger sizes to people who have just started
on their weight loss journey. The
clothes have hardly been worn
and I am happy to pass them
on knowing the women who
wear them will enjoy them for
a short time as their weight
loss success leads to smaller
sizes,” she says.
Melinda’s goal was to
reach 85 kilos but she says
reaching a weight that
was only two digits was a
major achievement. “Last
Christmas was a major
milestone. On Christmas
Eve I weighed 101 kilos.
I enjoyed a lovely family
Christmas and didn’t miss out on
any of the goodies. On Boxing
Day I was at my parents’ house
and decided to weigh myself. I was
thrilled to see the scales at 99 kilos.
“I may reassess my goal and try to
get below 85 kilos but I will jump that
bridge when I come to it. Right now I am
enjoying a new lease on life. I love buying
clothes, I enjoy walking and going to the
gym occasionally. I am not a sporty person
and can’t say I love exercise but there is a big
difference in walking with a spring in my step
at my current weight than being out of breath
and uncomfortable even on the shortest walk
at my former weight,” she says.

Restaurateurs Steven and Autumn Adams capitalised on the success
of their multi-award winning Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill Gold Coast
restaurant and invested a very sizable sum in to the refurbishment of a
landmark Brisbane property.
Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill at the historic Port Offi ce building at the
Stamford Plaza Hotel is set to take Brisbane by storm. The multi-million
dollar refurbishment makes this the place to see and seen.
Steven says former Siggi’s Restaurant executive chef Philip Foote will
weave his magic on the Moo Moo menu. “He will remain in familiar
surrounds with a completely new menu,” he says. “Philip has more than
15 years experience in all aspects of cooking.
“He has worked in and consulted to a number of well known restaurants
around South-east Queensland including Tables of Toowong, Horizons at
Sheraton Mirage on the Gold Coast, Ellmos Restaurant on the Sunshine
Coast and Joseph Alexander’s in Brisbane.
Moo Moo is now a capital choice for
lunch or dinner in the Brisbane CBD
“Philip is a qualifi ed butcher trained in the art of
charcuterie. This is a major bonus as top quality beef is
the hallmark of the Moo Moo brand. Philip’s knowledge
and understanding of the preparation of beef, and the
process of dry-aging and preserving meat is an asset,”
Steven says.
Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill serves modern
Australian cuisine. The speciality is premium quality
export steak. Steven says the menu features the
best cuts of steak available this country. “Moo Moo at
Broadbeach has won a long list of awards. This shows
how good the food is,” he says.
Gourmets and weight watchers will fi nd plenty of
healthy temptations at Moo Moo. The comprehensive
menu features oysters, chicken, fi sh, pork, duck
and kangaroo as well as tender beef and vegetarian
dishes. The exceptional wine list offers something
to suit all tastes and complement every dish.

AvoidNaan bread, poppadums, deep fried, samosas or curry puffs, and satay dishes
FrenchContrary to popular belief French food is generally based on small portions of fl avoursome food. Modern French cuisine is light and healthy. Avoid creamy dishes and take it easy with cheese. French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano is packed with useful information on gourmet style dieting.

Fast foodMost fast food is high in fat and sugar with little or no nutritional value. Play detective and discover the facts about the content of every item before ordering. Eating on the run is the fastest way to get fat. Hungry people eat fast and fail to achieve satisfaction. Fresh fruit is a better option when hunger pangs cause cravings.
Cafè StyleAvoid creamy soups and pasta dishes, quiches, pies, pastries and huge breakfasts with sausages and the works. Choose fruit platters, pancakes without cream or maple syrup, muesli or poached eggs. Ask for bread and toast without butter or mayonnaise. Salad sandwiches on thinly sliced bread are a good option. Avoid thick bread and rolls.

A matter of tasteScientists have discovered some people
have a taste for fat. Deakin researchers
Dr Russell Keast and PhD student Jessica
Stewart with colleagues from the University
of Adelaide, CSIRO, and New Zealand’s
Massey University found people with a high
sensitivity to the taste of fat ate fewer fatty
foods and were less likely to be overweight.
Dr Keast says we already know the human
tongue can detect fi ve tastes – sweet, salt,
sour, bitter and umami (a taste for identifying
protein rich foods).
“Through our study we can conclude that
humans have a sixth taste – fat,” he says.
“Fats are easily accessible and commonly
consumed. This suggests our taste systems
may become desensitised to the taste of
fat over time, leaving some people more
susceptible to overeating fatty foods. We
are now interested in understanding why
some people are sensitive and others are
not, we believe this will lead to ways of
helping people lower their fat intake and
aid development of new low fat foods and
diets,” Dr Keast says.
Calories, kilojoules and energy Confusion reigns supreme when it comes to food packaging. Australian law requires
manufactures to show how much fuel is in food. Fuel for the body can be called energy,
calories or kilojoules. All of these names denote the rate we burn the food we eat. Food that
is not burned through activity is stored as fat. Put too much fuel in a car and it spills out, put
too much food in the body and it turns to fat. A calorie is one unit of heat or fuel. A kilojoule
is exactly the same thing in metric measurement. A calorie equals 4.18 kilojoules. Calories
and kilojoules often appear on packaging as energy. A slice of bread may be shown to
contain 77 calories, 324 kilojoules or energy. It’s all the same.
A 60 kilo female aged 36 to 55 years with a reasonably active lifestyle needs around 1800 calories or 7500 kilojoules a day to maintain her weight. A 75 kilo man in the same age group and with a similar lifestyle needs about 2500 calories or 10,500 kilojoules a day to main that weight. Younger people need slightly more food, older people slightly less
Daily needsBurn it off Light exercise burns four calories (16.72 kilojoules) a minute.
These activities include strolling, easy cycling, light gardening,
housework, tennis doubles, golf, and horse riding. Moderate
exercise burns 7 calories or 29.26 kilojoules per minute. Options
include fast walking, moderate cycling, swimming, light weight
training, racquet sports, football and vigorous dancing. Burn 10
calories or 41.80 kilojoules a minute with power walking, heavy
weight training or cycling, skipping, advances aerobics or climbing
stairs. Vigorous sex burns about six calories or 25.08 kilojoules a
minute and it’s more fun than housework.

Broccoli is a rich source of vitamin
A, C, and bone-building K. The fi bre
is fi lling and the content is essential
for women. Research shows
cruciferous vegetables (broccoli
and caulifl ower) help with menstrual
and menopause symptoms. Don’t
overcook broccoli, blanch briefl y in
boiling water, steam, roast, grill, or
stir fry without fat. Taste the fl avour,

leave out the salt. Ask Moo Moo

Eggs are nutritious, versatile, and
economical. Studies show an egg
at breakfast leads to less snacking.
Eggs are packed with protein;
contain 12 vitamins and an array of
minerals including choline. Choline is
essential for brain development and
memory retention. Choose boiled,
poached, and scrambled with
water (not milk or cream). Create a
superb omelette in a non-stick pan.
When the base of the omelette is
fi rm, cook the top under the grill for
a fl uffy, attractive and tasty meal.
Add toppings of tomato or other
vegetables for colour and variety.
Plain ordinary oats are one of the
cheapest foods on the planet. Oats
provide a range of nutrients and help
lower cholesterol. Grains can be
eaten raw or quickly cooked. Quinoa
(pronounced keen-wa) is one of the
best whole grains. This ancient grain
is high in protein, fi bre, iron, zinc,
vitamin E, and selenium. It helps
control weight and lowers the risk of
heart disease and diabetes. Quinoa
is as easy to prepare as rice. Use it
as a side dish, mix with vegetables,
nuts, or protein. Other great grains
include barley, oats, buckwheat,
whole wheat, wild rice, and millet.

Low fat or fat-free plain yogurt is
calcium and nutrient rich. Yogurt
can contain probiotics to give good
digestive bacteria and heart-healthy
plant stanols. Lactose sensitive
people may be able to tolerate
yogurt. Go for plain natural yogurt
fortifi ed with vitamin D. Add fruit for
a meal in a moment or a delicious
dessert. Use yogurt as a dip for
carrot and cucumber sticks. Dairy
foods contain almost every nutrient
needed but balance, sugar, and fat
control is essential. Read the labels

Beans are loaded with insoluble and soluble fi bre. The fi rst helps lower
cholesterol, the second satisfi es the appetite and helps rid the body
of waste. Low-fat beans contain protein, carbohydrates, magnesium,
and potassium. The varieties are endless. Look for fresh beans in good
specialist stores, health food shops, and supermarkets. Go beyond the
tinned variety and check out kidney beans, whole soybeans, creamy
butter beans and all the other species. Beans can replace meat or poultry,
appear as a side dish, in soups, stews, or egg dishes. Check traditional

Nuts are quite high in energy,
protein, fi bre, antioxidants and
all the good fats. Nuts should be
enjoyed fi ve at a time not by the

plant sterols, almonds, peanuts,
walnuts, pecans and most other
varieties have amazing properties.
Nuts add texture and fl avour to
salads, side dishes, baked dishes,
cereals, and main meals.
Kiwis are nutritionally dense
and full of antioxidants. A large
kiwi supplies the daily Vitamin C
requirement and can act as a mild,
safe laxative. This good source of
potassium, fi bre, vitamins A and
E is sweet and easy to eat. Enjoy
straight from the skin, on desserts,
in salads, or side dishes.

Sweet potatoes belong to the dark
orange vegetable variety but contain
more vitamin A than any other.
Sweet potatoes are loaded with
vitamin C, calcium, and potassium.
Taste the sweetness, don’t add salt

are rich in potassium. Other dark
orange vegetable standouts include
pumpkin, carrots, butternut squash,

– a Modern diseaseObesityIn the 1960s and 70s, behavioural therapy
came into play in the fi ght against fl ab. The
results were signifi cant and components
of behavioural therapy are now part of
almost every treatment for moderate
weight loss and obesity. Goal setting,
cognitive restructuring, social support,
self monitoring, and relapse prevention
are important aspects of modern weight
management.
The 1950s saw the introduction of surgical
weight procedures. Early operations
involved intestinal bypasses; a large
part of the small bowel was removed to
reduce food absorption. Many forms of
intestinal bypasses were tried but major
complications including dehydration and
electrolyte inbalance were common.
Gastric bypass procedures were
developed to counteract the problems and
produce notable weight loss. Bariatric
surgical procedures continue to evolve.
Minimally invasive modern procedures
use laparoscopic techniques. These
safer procedures give excellent weight
loss results. Professional weight loss
management practitioners say bariatric
surgery is the single most effective
treatment for obesity.
Modern procedures performed widely in
Australia and throughout the world include
the gastric band and sleeve gastrectomy.
In contrast to early procedures, the rate
of complications is low and the results are
signifi cant. The effect of surgery is enhanced
by dietary and behavioural therapies.

– a Modern disease
There are numerous theories about weight gain but the fact is most of us now eat too much and don’t move enough
Early man had no issues with weight management. Food had to be caught or found, hunting wasn’t
a hobby, it was hard work and people ate only the amount of food they needed to survive. In ancient
times, people fasted for religious or cultural reasons. This holds true today as Christians may choose
to fast or give up a favourite food during Lent and Muslims fast during Ramadan.
As people became more affl uent and food more readily available, excess weight became a greater
problem. In the days of the Holy Roman Empire, gladiators and their girls would fi nish a big night out
with a trip to a vomitorium for a good chuck in the company of friends. The dangerous binge and
vomit fad latest for centuries.
The link between food and weight was not understood until the 1700s. Not many people had a weight
problem as food was a scarce resource for the majority, only the wealthy ate well. Obesity was seen
by some as a disease, a punishment for sinful behaviour, or a sign of affl uence. Art favoured the fat,
think of those voluptuous ladies classic artists painted – but only the rich could afford portraits.
In 1727 Dr Thomas Short published Discourse Concerning the Causes and Effects of Corpulency. This
English physician was ahead of his time. He advised overweight individuals to follow a diet of ‘moderate,
spare and of the more detergent kind’. Some of his other ideas were a bit hit and miss. Dr Short
recommended the avoidance of swamp like areas where the air was moist and soggy. Perhaps this
theory was based on fl uid retention; lots of people appear to enlarge in hot, humid conditions.
In 1835 Belgian statistician Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet developed the body mass index (BMI).
This was the fi rst mathematical calculation to measure body fat. The fi rst commercial concerns about
obesity and death were highlighted by the life insurance industry. Later the World Health Organisation
developed a system of categorising BMI based on health risk. While other measures now exist, BMI is
still widely used as a measure of weight related health issues.
The link between food and
weight was not understood until
the 1700s.
Calorifi c discoveries In the late 1800s chemist Wilbur Artwater
measured the energy content in food and
called it calories. The idea of counting
calories was under wraps until Dr Lulu Hunt
Peters published Diet and Health, with a
Key to the Calories in 1917. Dr Hunt Peters
recommended a daily limit of 1200 calories.
She promoted lifelong self discipline as the
key to successful dieting, little has changed.
Calories (kilojoules in the metric system) and
the idea of energy balance is still important
in weight management. The principal is
the same but the strategy has changes as
experts now realise willpower alone will fail
even the most determined dieter.
Banting recommended four meals a day based on green vegetables, fruit, meat and wine. He
advised people to avoid sugar, starch, beer, milk and butter. Wine and beer presented a problem in
Merry Old England. Water was too dirty to drink, coffee, and tea had not been discovered so most
people drank ale and wine from dawn ‘til dusk. Banting’s ideas about a relationship between diet
and weight didn’t impress the medical fraternity.
Knowledge gained over a few centuries did nothing to stop the outbreak of fad diets. There have
been a few good diets based on logic and science but these don’t outweigh the fads. The mad fads
include cabbage soup, vinegar, bananas, cookies, grapefruit, and coconut oil diets. The more bizarre
feature the tapeworm diet, cigarette diets, and the sleeping diet (it is diffi cult to eat while sleeping).
These were closely followed by the hallelujah diet, baby food diet, purple food diet, and others too
numerous to mention. As recently as the 1960s, bulimia was promoted as a healthy way to lose
weight. Binging and vomiting is not good for the system, the long term results are dire.
We could construct a diet dictionary from Atkins to Zen but it seems the fi rst low carbohydrate diet book was Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to
the Public published in the 1860s by English undertaker William Banting. Perhaps Mr Banting was tired of carrying heavy coffi ns but
he treated his own obesity using a diet designed to treat diabetes

Here’s to health – look good, feel good
Compliments about looking better are a thrill.
It’s wonderful to shop for clothes to suit a
new shape but it’s important to sustain the
motivation by appreciating the great new
feeling of well being.
According to Weightloss Solutions Australia psychologist
Warren Artz the physical and psychological affects of yoyo
dieting can be detrimental. “Lifestyle and eating habits must
be sustainable for weight loss goals to be achieved,” he
says. “Obsessive dieting and rapid weight loss creates havoc
with the metabolism and a confl ict with food. Unsustainable
changes result in deprivation, cravings, guilt, and failure.
“Freedom and choice are core human values and should be emphasised in all aspects of
life. Cravings are common when trying lose weight and an obstacle to success,” he says.
“Controlling starvation or compulsive behaviour is a challenge. Loss of control leads to guilt.
Many overweight people deal with failure and regain motivation. They prepare for yet another
diet and set themselves up for another failure.
“Losing weight is a biological and psychological issue. Understanding eating-related habits
and attitudes, general health issues, and psychosocial functioning is essential. There are
fantastic weight loss products that complement sustainable meal plans and a healthy lifestyle
but the real challenge is psychological. People who gain insight into their behaviour are armed
with knowledge and ready to take the fi rst steep to success,” Warren says.

This meal plan provides an average of
5600 kilojoules or 1300 calories a day.
Most women will fi nd the amount of food
more than adequate, men who do heavy
work (building for example) and people
who lead a very active lifestyle may need a
little more but that would only be an extra
slice or two of bread or a small potato
each day. Drink two litres of plain water
each day. Black tea, coffee, and low-joule
drinks are okay in moderation. If milk is
added to tea or coffee it increases the
kilojoule count. A small glass of wine adds
about 400 kilojoules or 100 calories.
FridayBreakfast: Two high bran
wheat biscuits with 125ml of
skimmed milk and half a punnet of
strawberries
Morning tea: 30g mixed
unsalted nuts
Lunch: Egg and salad sandwich

cucumber)
Afternoon tea: One pear
Dinner: One small grilled salmon
fi llet with half a cup of couscous

carrot)
Dessert: 200g natural yoghurt

Before starting this regime count the number of kilojoules or calories
consumed on an average day. Plan to reduce this by 500 calories
(2000 kilojoules) a day. Around 3500 calories or 14000 kilojoules must
be used in exercise to lose one kilo of body fat. A calorie equals 4.18
kilojoules, most women will lose weight on around 1500 calories per
day, men can consume around 2000 calories and still achieve results.
Eat breakfast• A balanced breakfast is essential.
• Fuel the body for energy and an active metabolism.
Eat small meals regularly• Several small balanced meals help speed the metabolism.
Choose food wisely• Cut down on complex and simple carbohydrates (sugars and
everything other than meat, fi sh, fruit and vegetables).
• Eat fi brous carbohydrates – vegetables, salads, fruits (fresh, cooked
without fat, or pickled) at night.
• Carbohydrates are burned as energy and measured as calories or
kilojoules. Food is used in exercise or stored as fat.
• Eat six 100gram servings of low fat protein each day.
• Protein products include egg whites, free-range chicken, veal, lean
steak and kangaroo meat.
• Kangaroo meat provides the highest level of nutrition per gram with
the lowest amount of fat.
• Add fi brous carbohydrates (cherry or grape tomatoes, Asian style
salad greens, fresh mushrooms and small quantities of capsicum).
Exercise• Exercise boosts the metabolic rate to burn kilojoules more effi ciently.
• An exercise program should be individually planned to consider
fi tness levels and the expected result.
• Moderate exercise – a daily walk for example – becomes a habit.
• Walking briskly for 40 minutes can use up to 1200 kilojoules.
• Running or jogging burns more kilojoules but increases demands on
the body.
• Plan a program that includes resistance training for fi rming and
toning three times each week and aerobic activity.
• Aerobic activity includes walking, running, cycling, rowing, swimming,
aerobic classes or a gym program.
• Walk 40 minutes before breakfast and after dinner every day for three
days – take the fourth day off – and resume the routine.

The battle of the bulge impinges on most people at some stage. Follow these step-by step instructions and get in shape fast. People aged over 45 years, seriously overweight people and
anyone with health issues should consult a health professional before starting a diet or exercise program
Food wiseThe good• Fresh food, low fat meat, fi sh, fruit,
vegetables and water.
• Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily
(one litre per 25 kilos of body weight) to
replenish vital nutrients.
• Asian vegetables, cos leaves and
baby spinach can be eaten as a snack
throughout the day.
• Protein powder with whey protein isolate
or a hydrolysed whey peptide isolate is an
effi cient source of nutrition.
• Add lyllium husks to increase fi bre. Women
may add fl axseed oil to protect joints,
boots metabolism and regulate hormones.
• Multi vitamins can improve nutrition.
• Fat metabolisers, l-carnitine, and ALA
(alpha lipoic acid) may help boost the
metabolism and increase fat loss.
• Check all supplements with a health
professional particularly when taking
prescribed drugs.
The bad• Avoid dairy food (butter and butter
substitutes, cheese, spreads and low-fat
versions of these).
The ugly• Bread, cakes, biscuits, rice, pasta, sweets,
chocolate or and other high-carb foods.
• Sugar, honey and other sweet products.
• Take-away foods, fried foods, processed
foods and sauces.
• Soft drinks – including milk based
products and high-energy drinks.
• Alcohol.
Food and energy • 1 gram of carbohydrates = 4.2 calories
• 1 gram of alcohol = 7 calories
• 1 gram of protein = 4.2 calories
• 1 gram of fat = 9 calories

Here’s cheersWowsers and health nuts seem to take
a fi endish delight in putting the kibosh on everyone’s fun but how much
alcohol is too much
Health professionals and others deliver dire warnings about the
effects of over indulgence in alcohol. An Australian Government
study shows drinking that results in problems is considered an
addiction. People who depend on alcohol are no longer described
as alcoholics – even Alcoholics Anonymous refer to members as
problem drinks.
Most people enjoy kicking their shoes off and having a couple of
glasses of wine or beer after work. After work drinks with mates is
a western world tradition. Problem drinkers are said to be people
who consume more than six drinks a day; less according to some
experts. Alcohol damages the brain, causes cancer and heart
disease, wreaks havoc on the liver and causes weight to increase.
People who choose to give up alcohol or reduce their consumption
to moderate levels need a will of iron. It is easier not to draw attention
to abstinence, ask a friendly waiter to keep the wine glass topped up
with water, order soft drink or non-alcoholic cocktails.
A standard drink contains
10 grams of pure alcohol
but serving sizes are often
more than one standard
drink. Australian bars and
restaurants do not use
common glass sizes and
super sized glasses are the
current fashion on licensed
premises and in the home.
Beverage cans, bottles, and
casks show the number
of standard drinks in the
container.
A standard drink varies according to alcohol content. In
general, a 100ml of wine, 30ml of spirits and 285ml of
full strength beer are standard drinks. Weight watchers
should note alcohol is high in kilojoules and has little or
no nutritional benefi t. A single nip of spirits (30ml) has 275
kilojoules on average, most wine comes in at around 300
kilojoules per 100ml, and 285mls of full strength beer has
about 440 kilojoules.
The kilojoules soon mount up and alcohol lowers resolve
so drinkers are likely to become eaters. Foods most likely
to accompany alcoholic drinks are high kilojoule fatty
snacks such as cheese and biscuits, salted nuts, pies
and other products with low nutritional value. People who
want to reach or maintain a healthy weight are advised to
avoid wine, beer, and spirits.
Experts recommended setting a limit on alcoholic drinks
and sticking to it. Start with non-alcoholic drinks and
alternate with alcoholic drinks. Drink slowly and try low
alcohol drinks. Eat nutritious low-salt food before or while
drinking, salty foods accelerate the need to drink.
The Australian Government website www.alcohol.gov.au offers some sensible advice on alcohol consumption. Responsible drinking is the focus. Guidelines recommend no more than two standard drinks a day for healthy men and women. Gender, age, mental health, drug use, and existing medical conditions can alter the affects of alcohol.

Professional people have high lifestyle expectations with years of potential income.
According to Drake Insurance representative Kelvin Fair many business people now
recognise the importance of protecting their lifestyles with insurance. Kelvin says a good
income and lifestyle doesn’t guarantee fi nancial security. “Successful people have a lot to
loose if they become ill or injured,” he says.
Kelvin has 18 years life insurance industry experience. He says everyone should insure
against risk. “Insurance includes life insurance, total and permanent disability cover, trauma
insurance, and income protection. It’s particularly important for income earners with families
and debts,” he says. “All income earners should review their insurance needs regularly.
“Cover must keep up with changing circumstances, income, family obligations and
business. How much cover is required is generally determined by income, the number and
ages of dependants, assets and debt. Self employed people and business owners should
ensure business debts and fi xed expenses are covered. The range of insurance options
covers all scenarios. It’s worth exploring all the options,” he says.
Kelvin says it is possible to hold life and disablement insurance cover inside superannuation.
“Most people can claim insurance premiums as a tax deduction. Income protection and
business expense insurance is usually tax deductible. Income protection can cover up to 75
per cent of gross personal income including superannuation contributions.
“Business expenses insurance can cover fi xed business costs including rent and electricity.
Combining two types of policies allows business owners to cover personal and work
expenses while possibly reducing the tax bill,” Kelvin says.
Income protection is essential for business people, professionals and salary earners

PresencePosture is everything, stand up straight and own the room.
CharmGreet sincere friends with a hug, avoid the phoney baloney kiss – Italians can do it, everyone
else looks foolish. Practice a fi rm handshake and offer your hand to men and women.
The voiceLow and soft always works. If shriekers and squeakers override let them go, worthwhile people
will return to the softer tone. Watch out for the upward infl ection at the end of sentences. This
trait is common to Australian females, it shows insecurity.
ConversationAvoid sentences being with I. Ask questions, was it easy for you to park, where did you get that
gorgeous dress, tie, bag. Focus on the guest. Learn a little bit of history and politics, know what
is going on in the world today (without involving movie stars or other so-called celebrities). Never
talk about the weather. Read classics; start with Mark Twain, Shakespeare and Dickens. Learn
about more than pop music. Choose a respected composer and learn about great music.
HairstylesOver bleached, coloured, or processed hair sitting fl at on the head indicates lack of confi dence.
Uptown girls have clean, free fl owing hair with lots of bounce and real shine. Opt for softer, darker
shades, less product, no irons, and natural movement; it says generations of good nutrition.
SkinClean, bright and tight – the cat in the drain look and heavy make up belongs in Kings Cross.
Orange or green based fake tan belongs in the ‘90s. It’s all about preserving the generational
link – health is essential, tans should only ever be light.
Hand and FeetKeep them neat, fake nails should look real. Opt for subtle or clear nail polish.
The bodyMost women remove the hair from their
legs and ignore gorilla like arms – fi x it.
Personal areas – underarms and bikini
line – should be neat. Remove underarm
hair completely, the rest is a matter
of choice.
FragrancePerfume should whisper not shout
– choose gentle, established scents,
spray in the air and walk thought
the waft.
FashionShiny, tight, sleeveless, ultra low
necked, mini and fl oral are not an option
after 30 and need caution before.
Choose great cuts, plain colours and
make the key words cut, fi t, and subtle.
MannersLearn to use cutlery, work from the
outside to the inside according to
each course. Put cutlery down while
chewing. Do not speak with food in the
mouth; learn to eat with the back teeth
so questions can be answered while
eating. Use the table napkin to dab
food from the lips, if food is stuck in
teeth make a hasty exit to the bathroom
and fi x it.
girlsWhile few would choose to copy Princes Anne or the former Camilla Parker
Bowles (now married to Prince Charles) there is a vast difference between
cashed-up trash and class. Take a look a Paris Hilton, after several generations
of nouveau riche she is still not acceptable in the top social circles.
Choose to be mistress or wife. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but that
plain aristocratic gold band will provide security long after the looks fade. Follow
the rules instigated by the girls in pearls photographed in Tatler – the world’s
snobbiest magazine.
Choose top to toe elegance and sensible conversation to make the catch of the
season. There are more rules about manners and style than about language
but this is a starting point for ladettes who would love to live like ladies.

LoVe it or hate itExercise
Some people enjoy a work out in the gym, a long walk, running,
swimming or other forms of exercise. The majority of people regard most
of these activities as torture but there is something to suit every body –
plump, lean, obese or athletic. Exercising alone is more benefi cial for
people who want a high intensity workout, according to a study from the
American College of Sports Medicine.
The study shows people are more likely to work harder on their own,
and even more so in a gym than outdoors. The study speculates this
is due to the variety of strength and cardio equipment available in a
gym. Researchers claim people do more exercise when focusing on
themselves rather than worrying about a friend’s pace or having a chat.
The study revealed people are more likely to exercise longer (but not
necessarily harder) when working with a friend. Working with someone
seems to prevent boredom. People are more likely to exercise for longer
periods outdoors as opposed to a gym. Choose a solo fast-paced push
or more leisurely exercise with a friend.
Get motivated with Emma Snowsill and Craig Walton
The Gold Coast’s golden couple has an
impressive collection of Olympic medals
but that doesn’t mean motivation comes
naturally. Emma says her greatest motivation
is shopping but she knows it’s important to
keep in shape and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Craig says he loves to exercise. “It keeps
me productive as well as fi t,” he says.
Emma and Craig start the day with a run on the beach and a swim. Emma says
regular exercise is all about habit. “It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you
do something every day,” she says. “Around 30 minutes of physical activity every
day is all it takes. Start with something that is relatively achievable, push it a bit
harder each day.
“That might be just adding an extra block to the morning walk or spending a few
more minutes on a treadmill. Results aren’t instant but they are consistent with
the effort put in. Even after the past 10 years of professional triathlon training,
getting out of bed at 5am every day never seems to be easy but it is all about
habit and consistency. The more you force yourself to do something, the easier
it will get,” Emma says.
Craig says working as a couple makes exercise easier. “We are both keen on
health and fi tness but not all couples share the same goals. If your partner won’t
work out fi nd a friend who will. It makes exercise fun and most people achieve
better results with the help of a little friendly competition,” he says. If you know
you have to meet someone at a certain place to exercise then you are more likely
to do it rather than making excuses at to why you shouldn’t,” he says.

At the recent American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery meeting in Washington
DC, much attention was focused on advances in body contouring. This expanding
fi eld has seen a sharp focus on patient safety and improved contour after these
signifi cant procedures.
After a signifi cant stretch the skin’s capacity to rebound to its original size and shape
may be seriously impaired. This can leave unwanted skin folds along the upper arms,
the sides of the chest and the torso. The legs may also be markedly expanded and
the breasts may have had a huge stretch and then a dramatic loss in volume.
Innovations in the techniques are using some of these skin folds to be “recycled”
in such a way that the tissues that would normally be excised are tunnelled to help
recreate the curvature of the buttock and an appropriate shape to the breast.
Further adaptations in techniques have been designed to reduce the incidence
of delayed healing in lifts to the arms, trunk and thighs, as these long wounds are
commonly troublesome and slow to heal.
Of course the most common body contouring procedure, Liposuction, can have a
role to play in restoring shape. However if the skin elasticity is poor, liposuction in
isolation may give a defl ated look and occasion a great deal of skin irregularity due to
the loss of the capacity to shrink and smooth the contour down. Thus Liposuction
may be required to be combined with one of the more extensive techniques to
create good contour.
Another area where major advances have been made is in abdominoplasty
or “tummy tuck”. The abdomen is the area most commonly ravaged by weight
fl uctuations and pregnancy. The stretch to the skin is obvious, but there are usually
signifi cant pressures put on the abdominal muscle wall from the expanding uterus or
even weight gain. Thus an abdominoplasty combines removing this excess skin and
the attached fat with tightening of the muscle sheath to return it to its youthful tone.
This has a dramatic effect to narrow the waistline and fl atten the abdomen. The scar
is designed to be situated as low as possible to make it easier to conceal beneath
most clothing. The narrowing of the waistline can be further accentuated by limited
liposuction to the fl ank region which helps to taper and lengthen the waistline.
Adaptations in the abdominoplasty technique pioneered by the French have
enhanced the improvement in contour achieved with this procedure and at the
same time reduce the complication rate and shortened the recovery. The procedure
is most commonly performed under a general anaesthetic and hospitalization for
two or three nights is normal. Fine catheters may be left in the abdomen to trickle
local anaesthetic around the abdominal wall repair for two days after the procedure
which greatly enhances the comfort during recovery.
Much like a caesarean, the muscle wall repair is the feature that tends to inhibit
mobility after surgery. Most people will have one to two weeks away from work but
it takes four to six weeks to get back to full strength there.
The body contouring procedures are amongst the largest of cosmetic surgery
operations. However their effects on body contour can be quite dramatic and they
really deal effectively with problems that are not amenable to more conservative
procedures. Remember that your surgeon is basically adjusting your skin and
muscle wall to fi t you, so the slimmer you are, the more dramatic the improvement
in shape there.
Esteem Day Spa plastic surgeon Dr Terrence Scamp recently attended an American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery seminar in Washington. Dr Scamp says it featured advances in body contouring

beatingdiabetes
About 921,000 Australians are currently diagnosed with diabetes but
estimates show there may be as many undiagnosed. The total number of
Australians with diabetes and pre-diabetes is estimated at 3.2 million. It is
this country’s sixth leading cause of death. Excess weight is a key factor in
the alarming rise of type 2 diabetes, 60 per cent of cases could be prevented
or delayed by healthy eating and regular physical activity.
Bodies function by converting glucose (sugar) from food to energy via the
hormone insulin. Diabetes occurs when insulin is no longer produced or the
amounts are insufficient. When people with diabetes eat glucose (bread,
cereals, fruit, starchy vegetables, legumes, milk, yoghurt and sweets), the
sugar stays in the blood instead of being converted to energy.
In type 1 diabetes the pancreas (a large gland behind the stomach) stops
making insulin. The body can’t turn sugar into energy and attempts to
compensate by burning fats. This produces dangerous chemicals in the
blood and can cause a condition known as ketoacidosis. This condition is
potentially life threatening and must be treated with insulin.
Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur
at any age. The cause is not known, but it has a genetic link and can’t be
prevented. It has nothing to do with lifestyle but a healthy lifestyle is very
important in helping to manage type 1 diabetes.
All people with diabetes must follow a healthy
eating and exercise plan as well as medical
advice and support though tablets or injections
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the illness. It
is caused by genetics and lifestyle. Risk is increased by high
blood pressure, excess weight, lack of physical exercise, poor
diet and an apple shape body with extra weight around the
waist. Healthy eating, regular physical exercise, and medical
assistance is essential for people with type 2 diabetes.
Other types of the illness include gestational diabetes. This
occurs in a small percentage of pregnant women. Impaired
glucose metabolism or pre-diabetes shows in high blood-
glucose readings that are not high enough to be classified
as diabetes. This is a warning sign and type 2 diabetes can
be prevented through lifestyle changes.
All people with diabetes must follow a healthy eating and
exercise plan as well as medical advice and support though
tablets or injections. Regular low fat meals should be based
on high fibre carbohydrate foods. The diet should include
wholegrain breads and cereals, beans, lentils, vegetables
and fruits. It is important to balance the amount of food with
the amount of exercise and eat only what the body needs.
Regular physical activity can help manage blood glucose
levels, reduce cholesterol and triglycerides and maintain a
healthy weight. Fats have the highest kilojoule content of
all foods. Eating too much fat increases weight and makes
managing diabetes difficult. Saturated fats should be strictly
limited. These fats occur in fatty meat, milk, butter, cheese,
palm oil, solid cooking fats, snack foods, convenience
foods, copha, coconut milk or cream.

CarbohydratesCarbohydrates are a great source of energy. Most foods contain carbohydrates, fi bre, vitamins and
minerals. Very low carbohydrate diets are not recommended for people with diabetes. Regular
amounts of carbohydrate foods help maintain energy levels without causing dramatic rises in blood
glucose levels. People taking insulin or diabetes tablets may need between meal snacks.
All carbohydrate foods produce glucose but at different rates. The glycaemia index or GI
shows how fast a carbohydrate food affects blood glucose levels. Eat moderate amounts of
carbohydrate and include low GI high fi bre foods. Avoid foods with added sugars including
sweets, lollies and standard soft drinks. Modify recipes by using reduced amounts of
sugar or a sugar substitute.
Protein is essential but choose lean meat, poultry without the skin, seafood, eggs
(not fried), unsalted nuts, soy products such as tofu, dried beans and lentils.
Herbs, spices, garlic, chilli, lemon juice, vinegar and other seasonings may be
used but take salt sparingly. Enjoy a moderate amount of diet soft drinks and
low joule jelly. Tea and coffee with reduced fat milk and no sugar are fi ne but
herbal tea, water, and plain mineral water are better options.

Wesley now includes a health and medical

says they aim to achieve success through
faster and more accurate diagnosis.
“We look for treatments with the least side effects and new treatments that
lead to quicker recovery,” she says. “The close link with one of Australia’s

an institute focussed on clinical research.
“Wesley Research Institute funds research projects for doctors, scientists

now being used around the world to identify patients at
risk of malnutrition,” she says.
Other major projects include a neurological study that
aims to develop new treatments for stroke recovery
and a three-year project on improved home care for
Alzheimer’s patients. Professor Campbell says the clinical
trials centre has an excellent reputation with international
pharmaceutical and other companies for high quality
medication and treatment trials.
“The tissue bank has tissues and blood samples stored
under liquid nitrogen for researchers studying the causes
and progress of disease. Wesley is now researching ways
of minimising and repairing damage caused by radiation
treatment. The institute has established a rural and remote
health centre to help people in the Australian outback. The
Mitsubishi Development sponsored centre will research the
use of communication technology to provide psychological
and physical health support for people in remote areas,”
Professor Campbell says.
The Wesley Research Institute is achieving life changing results through essential research. The work can only be conducted with the help of funding from generous individuals and organisations. The Wesley Research Institute Gala Evening is the principal annual fund raiser. The gala is one of Brisbane’s highlight events. More than 500 people are expected to attend the gala on Saturday June 26. Hillstone at St Lucia will be transformed with a Golden Age of Jazz theme. Health professionals guide mums and dads through the fi rst months
of parenting but the going can get tough as babies
become toddlers. Lay the foundations for a healthy future
and avoid the obesity epidemic by
encouraging good food choices ...
A healthy start
Babies grow at about seven centimetres every
three months. Toddlers grow at a much slower
rate (about 7 to 10 centimetres a year) but good
nutrition is still a priority. Breast milk and formula
provided adequate nutrition for infants but toddlers
need a variety of foods. This is the time to leave
bottles behind and teach kids to eat and drink
independently.
Toddler time (between 12 and 24 months) is crucial
to long term healthy eating habits. Children learn
to accept new tastes and textures. A wide variety
of nutrients should ensure satisfaction and normal
development. Depending on age, size, and activity
levels, toddlers need between 3200 to 4400
kilojoules a day.
Milk is an important part of a toddler’s diet. Milk
provides calcium and vitamin D to help build
strong bones and teeth. Toddlers should have 500
milligrams of calcium and fi ve micrograms of vitamin
D a day. Australian kids usually get enough Vitamin
D from a varied diet and outdoor play in the sun.
Usually kids aged 12 to 24 months can drink
whole milk. This helps provide calcium, vitamin D
and the fats needed for normal growth and brain
development. Reduced fat milk may be given if
overweight or obesity is a concern, and if there is
a family history of obesity, high cholesterol or heart
disease. After age two most kids can switch to
low-fat or non-fat milk. Discuss this with a doctor
or health professional.
Children may reject cow’s milk because it doesn’t
taste like breast milk or formula. If the child is at
least 12 months and rejecting cow’s milk try mixing
the milk with formula or breast milk. Gradually
adjust the mixture until it is 100 per cent cow’s
milk. Some kids don’t like milk, some may have an
intolerance to dairy products but this is relatively
rare. Discuss the options with a health professional.
Toddlers need nine milligrams of iron each day. Iron
defi ciency can affect growth and may lead to health,
learning and behaviour problems. A child who has
too much milk may reject iron rich food as their
appetite is already satisfi ed. Limit milk to about 600
ml a day. Serve iron-rich meat, poultry, fi sh, grains,
beans, and tofu. Include foods that contain vitamin
C (tomatoes, broccoli, oranges, and strawberries);
these improve the body’s iron absorption.
Keep high fat, deep fried, spicy and sugary foods
off the menu for as long as possible. Eventually
peer groups pressure will help cultivate a longing
for unhealthy foods but tastes formed in early
childhood are likely to last a lifetime. People who
prefer the natural fl avours of fresh wholesome
foods have the healthiest outlook. Talk to a doctor
about dietary concerns and don’t give children a
vitamin, mineral or food supplement without fi rst
discussing the products with a doctor.

Dr Laurent Layani and his team of experienced weight management
specialists at Weightloss Solutions Australia understand weight loss is an
individual process. Dr Layani is an experienced and highly qualifi ed surgeon. He
works with a professional team to make achieving an ideal weight a realistic goal
for everyone.
Weightloss Solutions Australia offers non-surgical and surgical solutions to weight
problems. Dr Layani says the fi rst step to a wonderful, healthy life is a consultation.
“A psychological assessment of goals and expectations helps to determine the best
weight loss option for each person,” he says.
Dr Layani says people want to lose weight for a number of reasons. “They may
simply be fed up with diets, not able to lose weight or maintain weight loss. Parents
and grandparents want to have the energy and mobility to play with their kids or
grandchildren.
“Health issues that go hand-in-hand with excess weight include diabetes, sleep
apnoea, high blood pressure and pain in the lower joints. We help to solve health
problems; patients are able to achieve a better quality of life with our support.
“We look at the entire picture by establishing eating and exercise habits, lifestyle
situations, goals and desires. A dietitian will design an eating plan. An exercise expert
will plan a routine that is enjoyable and effective. There are several non-surgical and
surgical options available. Non-surgical options include the Orbera System Balloon,
formulated meal replacements and a portion control plate.
“These options are effective and affordable. People see amazing results with
these methods and the support of the Weightloss Solutions Australia team. Some
people choose surgical intervention for weight loss. We have 10 years experience
in assisting more than 3000 patients to achieve their goals and manage their
weight long term,” Dr Layani says.
Dr Layani has an excellent reputation for
patient care and achieving successful results.
He says the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric
Band (LAGB) or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
(VSG) band is a very viable option for
people with major weight issues. “Extensive
experience in this profession shows it is
essential to listen to patient’s needs and
design a weight loss solution to match their
goals and expectations.
“Surgical intervention for weight loss has come
a long way over the past 10 years. Procedures
are minimally invasive and affordable.
Laparoscopic surgery techniques reduces
pain and recovery periods. Patients return to
normal activities within a few days.
“An easy payment program gives people the
opportunity to take immediate action and start
living the life they long for.
“Opting for surgery is a major decision. People
can rely on advice from the experienced
weight management specialists at Weightloss
Solutions Australia. We understand the
concerns and have the experience to
recommend the best possible solution to
weight problems. Medical advice about weight
loss surgery can only be gained from clinically
trained health professionals,” Dr Layani says.

Anthogenol makes staying young easier. Anthogenol contains a naturally derived health supplement
based on the proprietary isolation of OPCs (Oligomeric proanthocyanadins). It has a powerful
antioxidant effect and works at a cellular level to provide protection from free radicals. Each Anthogenol
capsule contains 100mg Masquelier’s Original OPC’s (vitis vinifer – OPCs isolated from grape seed);
40 mg vitamin C; and 20mg silicon dioxide. An Anthogenol capsule a day helps maintain healthy
circulation, relieves varicose veins, stimulates heart and eye health, and improves skin, hair and nails
while increasing energy and vitality. Find it at leading pharmacies.
Vitamins are essential to health and wellbeing. They are found in a variety of food sources but few people
eat a perfect diet so food supplements in the form of vitamins and minerals are great option. Australian
soils are often over-farmed. This results in mineral depleted produce. Quite often produce is picked
early and not allowed to ripen naturally, this creates nutrient defi cient fruit and
vegetables. Vitamins and minerals are potent products and it’s always best to
seek professional advice before taking anything. Balance is important and
some products may react with others or prescribed medication.

Clinique’s Self Sun Collection is the skin-saving way to radiance.
Overexposure to the sun is the leading cause of premature skin ageing.
Clinique has the perfect solution for people who want a believable glow
without sun damage. The collection includes Body Airbrush Spray, this
lightweight, self-tanning body mist gives a natural-looking colour. The
fast acting formula dries in fi ve minutes and colour starts to develop in
less than an hour.
Clinique Face Tinted Lotion is an ingenious, dual-purpose face-bronzer,
it gives a natural-looking self-tan in two to three hours. This sheer gel-
cream bronzer is tinted for controlled application that eliminates streaks,
and uneven application. Face Bronzing Gel Tint is a non-greasy cream-
gel that imparts a sheer, believable bronze. Oil-free and non-drying, this
natural-looking tan in a tube won’t clog pores and it only comes off with
soap and water.
Body Daily Moisturiser nourishes skin and gradually creates a natural,
healthy glow. This mistake-proof formula gives a hint of buildable,
uniform colour. Colour is visible within 24 hours of the fi rst application
and gradually builds into a deeper glow within four days. Maximum
colour intensity is reached after a week of daily use.
Ethical Nutrients helps educate people
with arthritis about the importance of
taking the correct daily dose of fi sh
oil to help reduce joint infl ammation.
Arthritis Australia suggests the daily
dose of fi sh oil needed to reduce joint
infl ammation is 2.7grams of omega-3.
Ethical Nutrients has developed a
new high strength liquid fi sh oil that
provides 2.7grams of omega-3 in one
teaspoon. People may take one or two
fi sh oil capsules each day but the dose
required to reduce arthritis associated
joint infl ammation is nine standard fi sh
oil capsules. Ethical Nutrients makes
the daily dose simple and convenient
with one standard metric teaspoon. In
food it would add up to and average
of 1.23kg of snapper or 1.1kg of canned
tuna a day.

The good oilOils and fats are generally considered the
enemy in the battle of the bulge but not all oils
and fats are bad news. Fat is essential but it
must be the right type in the correct amounts.
There are two essential fats the body can’t
produce, these are omega-6 fat (linoleic acid)
and omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid). These fats
help form parts of the structure of the brain,
eyes, ears, adrenal glands, joints and almost
every cell in the body.
The good oil is not hard to fi nd, it is present
in a number of foods including some types
of fi sh, olive oil and even chocolate. The best
source is fl axseed oil taken in a capsule as
a dietary supplement. Flaxseed oil is easily
destroyed by light and oxygen. Look for quality
brands in a dark glass bottle. Keep fl axseed oil
in the fridge. It cannot be heated but in liquid
form can be added to protein shakes or used
as a dressing.
Reliable research shows the majority of diets
are defi cient in omega-3 fats. Defi ciency
causes a decline in body function. Omega
3 helps reduce body fat and the risk of a
number of ailments. Studies show omega-3
oils can help prevent heart disease, reduce the
cholesterol ratio, blood pressure, triglyceride
levels, and cardiac arrhythmia.
This essential oil can increase the metabolic
rate by stimulating brown fat cells, making it
easier to lose body fat. Omega 3 has been
shown to selectively kill cancer cells without
harming normal cells. Arthritis suffers report
relief from symptoms when omega-3 oils are
taken as a dietary supplement. Skin conditions
including psoriasis, acne, eczema, dry skin and
other allergic conditions appear to be related
to omega-3 defi ciency.
Omega-3 fatty acids are the precursors for the
Series 3 prostaglandins. Series 3 prostaglandins
regulate immune function and the body’s
response to stress. These oils assist in protecting
against infl ammation, water retention and
lowered immune system. Omega 3 shortens
muscle recovery time after high exertion while
helping to heal sprains and bruises.

Start the day the healthy wayBreakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Eating breakfast is the key to staying slim and
healthy, according to information collected by
medical professionals. Research shows people
who eat breakfast are far less likely to become
obese, develop diabetes, or have a heart attack
when compared with people who don’t start the
day the healthy way.
It seems eating fi rst thing in the morning may help
stabilise blood sugar levels regulating appetite
and energy. People who eat breakfast are less
likely to be hungry later in the day and less likely
to overeat. Experts say the best breakfast foods
are wholegrains (bran, wheat fl akes, porridge and
wholemeal toast). People who eat these foods are
15 per cent less likely to experience blood sugar
problems.
Regular meals supplemented by small snacks are a better option than starvation diets. Plan three balanced meals and keep low fat snacks on hand. Fresh crisp celery, carrot, or cucumber sticks and cubes of melon help suppress cravings.

A new car is a Few CLiCKs awaY
Time is precious, we all try to squeeze as much into each day as possible
so anything that saves time is of value. Grand Motors Toyota researched
car buyers’ opinions on researching new and used vehicles and came up
with the perfect solution – an online dealership.
Grand Motors Toyota executive coordinator Lauren Pembroke says
shopping in cyberspace suits most people. “We discovered that 88 per
cent of people now research or buy cars from the internet and dealership
websites,” Lauren says. “We designed an easy to navigate website and
enquiry screen so people can view most of new and used cars on line.
“It is a grand solution for busy people. Couples can check out the vehicles
in the comfort of their own homes and all the family can have their say.
Shopping on line takes the pressure off, people can choose from a vast
range of vehicles without any input from sales people.
Busy people don’t have time to trawl around
checking out car dealerships, Grand Motors
Toyota has the problem solved
“Our dedicated team responds to all enquires quickly.
All new car prices include 12 month registration,
Toyota’s fi xed price servicing for three years or 60
thousand kilometres and a three-year factory warranty.
“The website features all the demonstrator specials as
well as new and used cars. Business people can check
out the specifi c fl eet section. People can quickly fi nd
information on spare parts and service,” Lauren says.
Visit www.grandmotors.com.au to take the hassle out
of car buying.

Rewards are essential in weight loss success; an individual piece of jewellery is the ultimate prize
A gift of jewellery is joy forever. Most people receive
beautiful pieces for milestone birthdays, when they
become engaged, are married or deliver a baby. All
of these occasions are memorable and life changing
but none of these successes take as much effort as
loosing weight.
Change kilos to carats and wear reminders of
success. Imagine celebrating the loss of kilos with
carats, a beautiful piece of jewellery could represent
a milestone achievement and reinforce resolve.
LeGassick is renowned for creating exclusive
heirloom pieces for every occasion. Clients
can choose from a ready to wear collection of
masterpieces from around the world or have an
individual piece created. LeGassick managing
director Darryn LeGassick says keepsake pieces
have taken on a new celebrity twist as famous
people are investing in jewellery to mark a wider
span of special events.
“Reward a love one or mark a milestone with a
gorgeous piece from the LeGassick. We have
recently received parcels of unusual gem stones
from around the world,” he says.
“These stunning stones include chrome tourmaline
from Africa and Sri Lanka, kunzite from Madagascar,
and cinnamon garnets from Brazil. A new parcel of
pink diamonds is due to arrive from the Argyle Mines
and we have a new range of jewellery due from
Germany,” Darryn says.
