It was a historic day for Bray’sDublin Oak Academy as JoaquinMargain lifted the First Year ‘B’ Boys

Cup following a solid performanceagainst Connacht ChampionsCoola Post Primary School fromRiverstown.A brace of goals by Jose Salmon inthe opening half was enough to seeJohn McShane’s side reach amomentous occasion for the School. The Bray boys were made up ofstudents from Mexico, Spain, Italyand Chile and they certainly turnedon the style at City Calling Stadium,Longford Town FC on Wednesdaylast (April 27).The physical superiority of DublinOak was evident early on but thetalented Johnny Kenny and ConorHealy worked tirelessly throughoutthe game to keep the Sligo side in

contention.Bray’s Salmon sliced through Coola’sback four on the quarter mark to slotpast Kearns from close range for theopening goal of the game.Dublin Oak doubled theiradvantage eight minutes later asJose Salmon was again on target.Diego Aldape was denied a Brayhat-trick three minutes from halftimeas his rocket smashed off the Coolacrossbar. The second half was far more evenand the Coola lads battled hard toget back into this contest. CaptainCiaran McKeon was a busy mantrying to get to grips with the Brayonslaught as Conor Kearns did wellto keep the deficit to two.Coola’s Flynn, Kenny and Healywere magnificent for KevinMcCarthy’s side but the Bray

defense were adamant to keep aclean sheet for netminder IvanMourino.Bray still have a League semi-final tofulfil so their Cup celebrations will beput on the backburner until theirseason is completed.

For the second year runningSligo RFCs U18.5 squad havebeen succesful in winning

the Connacht League. It hasbeen evident that Sligo RFC’sYouth Section has beenproducing some very stellarplayers and results in the last fewseasons.

On Saturday Sligo’s 1st XVs AILteam beat Leinster JuniorLeague Champions Enniscorthywith no fewer than 5 players fromthe current and last season U18.5squad. Not to mention 3 playersstarting on the Irish U20’s team inrecent months.

This Sunday at the neutralground in Castlebar, Sligo U18.5s

faced Connemara RFC’s AllBlacks. Sligo had reached thefinal by beating a strongBuccaneers outfit last weekendby 1 point in a hard foughtmatch in Hamilton Park. Thatmatch unfortunately left captainRoss Hickey injured with a tornhamstring.

On Sunday a strong windblowing along the pitch was tobe a major factor in the finalmatch of the season.Connemara kicked of at thewhistle and for the most part ofthe first half, playing down wind, pressured Sligo and kept them intheir own half. Sligo defendedreally well and kept their heads

cool with some solid defensivekicking, but never reallymanaged to bring the gameinto the Connemara half. Thepressure finally yielded a try forConnemara after yet anotherline-out and a pursuing maulfrom the Sligo 5 meter line. Theconversion was good and with afew minutes to go in the first halfconnemara was leading 7 – 0. Atthe restart Connemara collectedthe ball, but a few phases laterconceded a penalty that Sligoquickly took and through a greatbreak by Sean Wynne where heoff loaded to Aiden Cumminsthat carried the ball another 5meters until Shane Flanagan,

coming off his wing, cut backacross the way of play and at abrilliant timed pass by Cumminsgot the ball, bursting through agap in the Connemara defenceand scored under the posts. 1/2time score was 7 all.

At the start of the second halfSligo pressured hard and on acouple of occasion was veryclose to scoring their second try,but fierce defence byConnemara held Sligo at bay.Halfway through the 2nd halfSligo got a penalty at a difficultangle to the posts, but narrowlymissed. Not long afterConnemara conceded anotherpenalty, on their own 22 in frontof the posts and the Sligo went10-7 ahead.

It was Connemara that wereto score the next and last try ofthe match after some sloppy linespeed on defence from Sligothat allowed the Connemaraforwards to push towards the tryline. After a great deal ofpossession they scored andconverted the try going up 14-10.

the next phase of play was allSligo and yet again Connemaraconceded a penalty with 10mins to go that Sligo’s 10, NiallGray, took full advantage of.Sligo was now only 1 pointbehind and although they hadmost of the play it was abreakout by the brilliantConnemara outhalf that nearly

cost Sligo the match for sure andonly a lack of discipline byConnemara got Sligo off thehook via a penalty awarded tothem close to the Sligo try line.

With under 2 mins of play leftSligo kicked to touch, won theline out and went throughseveral phases, including ablocked attempt at a drop goalthat somehow Sligo retainedand within another couple ofplays Connemara’s achilles heel, lack of discipline at thebreakdown, yield Sligo akickable penalty 30 meters fromgoal.

The pressure on the Sligo kickerwas immense, but Niall Graykept a cool head and struck asweet ball that sailed over for the3 points and a win to Sligo RFC16-14 in the final act of thegame.

Richie McLoughlin is Sligo’sown two-wheeled king ofspeed. A road racer who

has competed at lower levelsand made his way up into theprofessional arena, thesportsman is readying himselffor the biggest challenge of hiscareer; the coveted Isle Of ManTT. “It’s the Mecca for racing”,he states emphatically. We sentEamon O’Neill on his bike tocatch up with Richie, to find outexactly what it takes to get tothe TT. On your marks…

The month of May has onlyjust begun as I sit down to chatto Richie Mc Loughlin, butthoughts of the world famousIsle of Man TT are already firmlyplanted in the Sligoman’s mind. With the event revving to starton 28th May, there’s much to bedone before Richie gets there;“I could do with a secretary”,he tells me; “there’s so muchpaperwork with licences and soon”, he adds in a fluster.

In less than a month’s time,Richie will be taking to the Isle ofMan circuit, realising a dreamfor an interest that has been in

his family for generations. “Mydad had bikes all his life, but hewas never involved in racing oranything”, says the amiablerider as we sit down for a chat.“We were brought up on bikesto begin with”, he confirms. The‘we’ Richie is referring to ishimself and brother Christy, andit was the older McLouglinbrother that first donned ahelmet; “bikes are in the family, but racing only came in whenmy brother started In 2004”, hesays.

Keen to help out his siblingwho was competing on anamateur level, Richie soonfound himself wanting to takepart: “I followed Christy into it.He was doing track racing andcircuits, and I was going withhim and helping him out all thetime. I was into bikes anyway, soI figured if I’m going to go, Imight as well compete at it.”

It was a decision that wouldprove fortuitous to thepassionate family, as fate wouldsoon befall them: “I went at it in2005 on the short circuits”, saysRichie taking up the story; “and

Page 11: Sligo Sport Magazine

Christy became injured at theend of that first season, so thatwas him out”. It delivered ablow to the biking-mad family, however not a fatal one; “henever raced again after that, and I just carried on from thereby myself”, says Richie.

And so began Richie’s stint asa short circuit racer. “You do arider assessment and you getyour race licence after that”,he says of his official entry intothe competitive biking world. Tomake it into the bigger leagueshowever, Richie knew that itwas a matter of working his wayup through the ranks: “To goroad racing, you have toprogress your way through theshort circuits, from club level tonational level,” he explains.

Making big noises on thesmall scene, things were goingwell for Richie until disasterstruck at a race in Belfast: “Itwas 2009 when I was due to domy first road race, and about aweek before that I had a crashat Kirkistown”, says Richie takingup the story; “I had a badlybroken leg out of that, so thatwas the end of that season forme.”

Richie didn’t ride again untilthe following year, and thoughthe wobble didn’t put him off,he does admit to questioningthe sportsmanship of some ofthe competitors: “I wasdisillusioned with the way thatthe younger riders werecarrying on; they’d go throughyou or over you to get onemore placing”, he statesdisbelievingly. The accidentdidn’t put the determined

young man off however, andRichie quickly got back up onthe bike: “The accident wasn’tmy fault, it was someone elsethat took me out, so I didn’tdoubt myself”, he reasons.

The result of which was thatthe younger McLoughlin brotherrefocused his efforts to moveaway from the short circuitscene, and onto the moredisciplined sport of road racing.

“I progressed well enough onthe roads in 2010, and until 2012I was in the supportchampionship. I won theSouthern Centre Championshipthat year, and came third in the

Irish and Ulster championship”,he says proudly. From there,Richie got “upgraded”, as heputs it, to the national levelwhere he has competed eversince.

Richie receiving 4th place award at the Isle of Man Manx GP

Page 12: Sligo Sport Magazine

SLIGO SPORT MAY, 201612The step up also

meant that he was freeto compete at aninternational level, whichlead him into the bigleagues: “I knew thenthat I was going to beriding with the big boys”,he says. It was then thatRichie qualified for theNorth West 200 for thefirst time, however, hishopes of competingwere dashed by the Irishweather: “It was rainedoff on race day”, he saysdespondently, addingwith a wink; “it happensmost years – it’s calledthe ‘North Wet’ aroundthe paddock!”.

Opting to focus hisenergies elsewhere, therider had his eyes on oneparticular event: “Forme, the TT was alwaysmy main goal”, he saysof the annual Isle Of Manevent. Wasting no time,he entered the 2013Manx Grand Prix, whichRichie describes as “likean amateur TT”, wiselyopting to take it on firstto get a feel for thecourse. It was a decisionthat was to pay off, withthe Yeats’ County manplacing forth in thenewcomers’ race.

It was a greatintroduction, but therider wasn’t fully satisfied;“I only done eleven laps, which in my mind wasnot enough, becausewhen you step up to theTT, you’ve got thatamount of laps done bythe Wednesday inpractice week”, hereasons. It was thisfrustration that led Richieto go for the big prize; tocompete in the TT itself.

“The TT is the meccafor all racing”, statesRichie unflinchingly. “It’sthe road racing capitalof the world and it’snearly thirty-eight mileslong, per lap”, he informsme. In terms of speed,Richie’s most recentjaunts to the Manx islandsaw him tackle thecourse on a 600cc bike, which he says performeddisappointingly at stilleye watering speeds ofup to 165mph. “I’d behoping for 180mph plus”,he opines.

A family man with wifeAoife by his side, and afour year old calledZack, I ask Richie if safetyis a concern, given thehigh mortality rate whichhas claimed some of thesport’s top names on theroads. Richie pausesbefore answering;“everybody knows therisks”, he says simplybefore conceding; “itcould be seen as aselfish sport, because, even though the riderknows the possibleoutcome, by the timethey put on theirhelmets, they’ll still do it”.

Are the bikes perhapsbikes getting toopowerful, I ask? “I can’tsee them getting toomuch more powerful”,reasons Richie; “It’s asclose to being as fast asit can get for road racecircuits”, he states.

Moving on, theconversation turns to thecamaraderie amongriders in the paddock.“Oh yes”, he perks up; “Iwas chatting to anEnglish lad at one of theraces a couple of weeksago”, says Richie; “it washis first road race, and hesaid that he’d prefer torace over here ratherthan back home inEngland becauseeveryone’s friendly in thepaddock. If you’re stuckfor anything; a sparepart or need to borrow atool, someone willalways help you out”. Hecontinues; “It’s simply notlike that elsewhere”,adding; “it’s like a familyin the paddock;everybody knowseverybody, and there’sa lot of familyinvolvement – peoplebring their wives andtheir kids, it’s a real familyaffair”.

As our time comes toan end and I ask Richiewhat his goals are for thisseason, his thoughts turnonce more to the TT; “I’mheading over on 25th

May, and I’m looking tohave a big increase onspeed”, he says, gettingback to his point aboutlast years’ unsatisfactoryperformance. It’s thisyear though that Richiesees as time to put hisexperience into action:“I feel now that I doknow the circuit a lotbetter, and I know whatto expect”, he states. Allof which bodes well forhis target; “I’m going ona 1,000cc bike asopposed to a 600cc,and straight away I’d beexpecting increase inspeed”, he says, with hisvoice stepping up agear.

And long term goals?“There’s a replica trophyof the big one that theygive out to the winnersat the Isle of Man”, hesays; “they give smallerreplicas of them, according to speeds asthey go down, and thesilver replica would beideal”, he reasons. Andwhat of the big trophies, does he see himselfgetting his hands on oneof them? Richie isrealistic; “I don’t seemyself ever lifting the bigtrophy”, he concludes;“well, not unless I stealit!”

“Road racing is apredominantly Irish sport. They do a bit of it inEurope, but it’sdifferent”.

Unless youhave beenliving

underground forthe past fewweeks you wontfail to haveheard about, and be

impressed by, Leicester City &their journey to winning theEnglish Premiership. It’s beenquite a tale & one that will betalked about many a yearfrom now.

There are so many facets oftheir performance that Icould talk about. For thisarticle though there’s onethat’s been ever presentsince their rise to the top.How they dealt with thepressure of expectation. Ifyou Google ‘Leicester Citypressure’ you get a monster

1,410,000 results! When is thebubble going to burst, howwill they deal with thepressure of going & stayingtop etc. etc.

I’ve read a few interestingspotlights on how they did thisand I thought they would beuseful to highlight 5 of them.

The Manager, ClaudioRanieri, set realistic targets &revised them all the waythroughout the season. Itstarted with the original goalwhich was to hit 40 points forthe season, which theymanaged in 20! He then setthe target of getting morepoints in the second half ofthe season than they had thefirst. When that was goingwell it was to get into Europeand then with only a fewgames remaining it was towin the league. Realistic

clear and tangible goalswere set & revised throughoutthe season.

They celebrated achievingthese mini goals throughoutthe season. When theyreached 40 points theycelebrated with champagne, when they had their firstclean sheet they went out forpizza. I’m not saying do thisbut celebrating the smallsuccess on the way to thebigger prize is something youshould be doing if your aren’talready. Enjoy the journeynot just the end game.

It was said that hedeflected pressure from theteam by doing this. I don’tagree with this as pressurecomes from within. Each ofthe team would have had tohave handled any pressurethemselves. They all did this

brilliantly of course.Perhaps this was down to

their mood. James Vardytalked about how they lovedto have a laugh as a team.Make light of situations & try &have as much fun as theycould. Certainly when youare in good form life’s that biteasier. If your finding thepressure of your sport gettingto you this year why notlighten up a bit. It’ll loosenyou up & allow you toperform more freely.

I read an article todayaround the great work thesports science and medicalteam have done. Moreimportantly how all thedifferent aspects of the clubwork together to get the bestresults. Having the right teambehind you is crucial whetherits getting the right coaching, right conditioning &treatments or just listening tofamily and friends whosupport you (why listen to theones who don’t). Thisdoesn’t matter if your goingfor Kona or running you first 5kchoosing your ‘team’ willmake a massive different toyour enjoyment andperformance.

Obviously there are plentymore elements to this successand I’m sure there will bemany a book written on howthey did it. What I’d like youto do is just have a reflect onthe ones I’ve mentioned andsee which ones you areincorporating into you game. There really are some simplesteps here that are sure toraise your level no matterwhat your doing.

Swimminglessons help withchildrens’ mathsresults, studyfindsSwimming classes help middle classchildren boost their maths grades, astudy by UCL has revealed.Children who take part in organisedsports and physical activities wereone and a half times more likely toreach higher than expected gradesin their maths test at the end primaryschool at age 11, it found.“The chance of experiencingsuccess in sports raises pupils’confidence and self-esteem.”Dr Emily Tanner of NatCen

Researchers claimed that thesense of achievement childrenexperience while engaging inactivities like swimming and dancingmotivates them to do well in theiracademic studies as well.

The study, which was carried outby NatCen Social Research,Newcastle University and ASKResearch, analysed information onmore than 6,400 English children bornin 2000-01. The study’s leadinvestigator, Dr Emily Tanner, ofNatCen, explained the link betweenengaging in sports and other extra-curricular activities and increasinggrades in maths. She said: “Thechance of experiencing success insports raises pupils’ confidence andself-esteem. Activities like after schoolclubs can help a child value school ina new way and establish strongerrelationships with staff.” ‘Social skillsare important’

She said sports also enhancedsocial skills and generated a positiveexperience of school which in returnmade children apply themselvesharder in their academic studies. Sheexplained: “Social skills are importantfor learning.

In sports activities and organisedsports children are mixing with adifferent group  of children from theones they mix in class. Therelationship with social skills can becarried through to their academicstudies. “For children who may havehad a negative experience in theiracademic learning, this provides amore positive experience.”

The study also found that amongdisadvantaged children, those whoattended after school clubs alsofared better than their peers whodidn’t take part in such groups.

They achieved an average of twopoints higher in their tests at the endof primary for English, maths andscience, researches said.

Kieran, who has previouslyraised over €20k for MS Ireland,Autism Awareness Ireland, andothers, has set himself a target ofshooting a total of 4,000 claypigeons over four consecutivedays in Ulster, Connacht, Leinsterand Munster.

Speaking in advance of theMay 19th launch of the NationalClay Pigeon Shoot for PietaHouse in Castledargan HotelBallygawley Co Sligo, Kieran said“I did not know until recently that10 Irish people a week take theirown lives, or the fact that eight ofthem are men.”  Kieran, who is amember of Ballintogher GunClub and St Michaels GAA clubBallintogher, added “In recentyears, we have been left broken-hearted in every county in

Ireland following the tragic loss ofmen and women, young andold, who lost their battle withdepression”.  He believes that it isvital that we support Pieta Housein its work.  “Pieta House is a non-profit organisation and 90% of itsincome comes from fundraising. It currently has almost 180therapists and administration staffso we will be doing our utmost toraise as much awareness andfunds as possible to support thegreat work Pieta carry out everyday”.

In 2015 alone, over 5,000people came through the doorsof Pieta House suffering fromsuicidal ideation or engaging inself-harm.  The Pieta House staffprovide a specialised treatmentprogramme for people whohave suicidal ideation or whoparticipate in self-harmingbehaviors.

Donna Burke from PietaHouse, said she was delightedthat Kieran Finn and his teamhave decided to run the event inaid of suicide prevention “One ofour goals is to have a centre

within 100km of every person inIreland and we’re well on ourway to achieving this. To helpbring us closer to this importantgoal, we have identified threeareas most in need of our service- namely, the North West, theSouth East and the Midlands. Weare extremely grateful to Kieranfor organising the Clay Pigeonevent and all funds received willallow us to reach our goals, andhelp those most in need, thatmuch quicker”.

Donna added “We’repassionate about our life-savingwork. As 90% of our incomecomes from fundraising events,we rely heavily on the supportand encouragement of ourvolunteers and friends of Pieta.”

Kieran, a proud grandfather tothree year old Shane, revealedthat to give himself the bestchance possible of Shooting at4,000 clay pigeons over fourconsecutive days, he has been inspecial training since September2015 at Sligo gym ROM, assistedby specialist trainer Terry Quinn. “Ihave competed in two WorldChampionships, including SouthAfrica in 2012 but nothing will beas gruelling or as physically andmentally demanding as thechallenge I am undertaking forfour days, starting on 29th of Julythis year”. To take on the 4,000clay pigeon challenge, Kieranneeded the help of the specialistteam at ROM Gym to gain the 21

pound weight and muscle massneeded to withstand the impactof 103,500 recoil pounds ofenergy that he will be hit withover the four days.

Finishing in Sligo on August 1st inRiverstown at Lough Bo shootingcentre where Kieran will target hisfinal 1,000 clay pigeons, the four-day event starts in the Irishshooting Sports Grounds,Meenbanivane inKnocknagoshel Co. By Mark FoleyEaskey 10km-It had been awhile since I ran a 10km so Iwas looking forward to it. Myweight had slipped below68kg during the week. I used torace 10km like I race triathlons-go hard off the bike. So in pre-vious 10km I would knock out a2.50km to start, settle into3.15km and hold on for the lastfew km. This method had somelimited success, but it was veryhard on the body. Now I lookfor some else to set the paceand run off them. In Easkeytwo of us went off together. Ifelt really comfortable after2km and started up a bit of aconversation with the otherguy. It turned out he was atriathlete from Kilkenny. I chat-ted to him for about 3kmtelling him all about my exploitsin the Ironman Barcelona. Infairness he was not doing awhole lot of talking. The pacewas about 3.25km. I was stillaerobic and felt great after5km. There was a bit of a dragfrom 5-6km so I started to put abit of time into Ray. At 8km Ilooked at my watch and it was27.30 so I had 6.30 to sub 34min. So I put the hammerdown and shifted into top gearor as I like to call it-TommyThreshold-3.10 pace. I closedfor a 34.15 with 10.2km on theclock. I was very happy withmy performance and felt Iraced it well. I definitely lefttime behind me in the first halfof the race. In the next outing Iwill try not the chat as much. The was a great course, ittracked the coast for a coupleof km, It only had one drag forabout 1.5km and a nice down-hill to finish. The refreshmentswere great and everyone waswell feed. I was presented witha large pottery replica of theEaskey Castle and a cashprize. I would definitely recom-mend this race in the future. My recovery from this race wasquick which is always a goodsign. I am looking forward torunning with some of the Sligo

AC lads, hopefully they canpull me out into PB tertiary. Typ-ical forty year old still lookingfor PBs Sligo Pool SprintLet me start by telling you that Iam a shocking pool swimmer. Ihave heavy legs and my armcadence is a bit fast. On theflip side put me in my magicwetsuit and a lumpy sea and Igo like a demon. So the swimtook a fair bit out of me. I heldthe draft for the first 400m andthen the fatigue set in and Iswam the second half on myown. So I started out like a fishand finished like a clam. Ontothe bike and it took a while toget going. When I finally gotthe power down I started mak-ing ground on the completion. Then bang-on the top of thefinal hill I lost my chain, I triedthree times to reset it butfailed. As it was down- hill allthe way to transition I decidedto hop on the bike and freewheel back to transition. Allthe good work on the bike wasnow gone. I racked the bike, stripped the fangs and de-cided to really nail the run. Iran 16.51 for a solid 5km. Thiswas only a B race for me and isa good gauge of where I amat and what I need to work on. My swim is coming on and is awork in progress. I am lookingforward to getting back in thesea-(level the playing field). On the bike I have loads onbase endurance done so ittime to start pushing it up intothe top of the pyramid forpeak performance. I finished7th overall but I can assure youthat I will be a differentprospect in a month’s time.Next up is the Ballina halfmarathon which I have alwayswanted to do but it has neversuited my plans. My PB for ahalf marathon is 1.19 and thiswas in a Half Ironman in theKerry mountains-(1.9km swim-90km bike-21km run)-all in aday’s racing. Needless to say Ithink I can improve on this, byhow much? Time will tell.....

latest update from Eamon McAndrew

Sligo Tri NewsThe annual Sligo pool sprint was held lastSunday. The event was a huge success andattracted a top field of athletes. ConDoherty and Heather Foley added yetanother victory to their growing list of wins in2016 over the weekend as they camehome in 1st place at the Sligo Pool Sprinttriathlon. It’s great to see top athletes inaction and not afraid to race each otherhard.Doherty, who is back home following awinter of training in Australia and racing onthe international ITU circuit, won the race byalmost 2 minutes over his fellow Westportman Aichlinn O'Reilly. But with just one second separating the pairon the swim and a further single secondseparating them on the bike, it wasn't untilthe run leg that Doherty pulled clear, running an impressive 15:59min over 5km toseal victory. O'Reilly managed to hold off afast finishing Kieran Jackson to take 2nd

place by half a minute, with Jacksonposting the second quickest run split of theday to take third. In the women's race, newly crownedNational Duathlon Champ for 2016,Heather Foley took control soon aftergetting on the bike to pull ahead of thefield and comfortably post the quickestbike and run splits of the day. The battle forsecond place was hotly contested withjunior athlete Caron Ryan just pipingJoanne Flanagan by 14secs.There was a strong showing from Sligo Trimembers with myself (Eamon McAndrew)putting in a strong performance all be itwith some mechanical issues on the bike. The event was a credit to all involved, witha special acknowledgment to race directorFergal Henry and the volunteers for givetheir time to make the event a success. Inall 260 athletes of all abilities, shapes andsizes completed.

Enniscrone/Kilglass indoor astro turfarena ratifiedOn Thursday evening last, Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA club members formally gave per-mission to the club to proceed with a revolutionary indoor astro turf facility and gymcomplex that will be situated at the club grounds in Quigabar. Complete with akitchen and toilets, this facility is one of only three in the country and is set to make En-niscrone/Kilglass’ facilities among the best in the country. First and foremost, however, the project is intended to be a centre for the development of young footballers withinthe parish, with the view to providing a world-class training facility to produce betterand skilled players.Speaking following ratification of this major development, club chairman DeclanRouse commented: “This is a landmark day for our club, and one which firmly sets outour intention to provide high quality facilities to players of all ages in Enniscrone/Kilglass.“Our ambition is to return to being a prominent force on the playing fields, and with thisproject we are stating our ambition to produce footballers capable of competing withthe best. “Our coaching structure at present is well organised and with huge numbersat younger age groups, this complex when complete will provide the ideal facility forunderage players in particular to hone their skills all year round. “In addition, this centrecould well become a hub for various other local groups, who are currently without acentre to undertake their activities. “All in all, this is a big step in the right direction forEnniscrone/Kilglass and I, as with other club members, look forward to the excitingtimes ahead.” Construction on the project is set to start in the coming months.

The look of the tyre variesbased on the rules. TheIKC rules state that, “The

tyre/hoop must be directlymounted in a substantialframe structure which mustbe secured in such a waythat dogs cannot knock theobstacle over from eitherdirection; the frame shallnot have a beam acrossthe top.”. FCI rules say that,“The tyre must beadjustable in height (chainsor rope), fixed or rigidattachments are notallowed.” IADSA rules arein-between: “Two types oftyre are acceptable: Type1: The tyre / hoop must bedirectly mounted in asubstantial frame structurewhich must be secured insuch a way that dogscannot knock the obstacleover from either direction;the frame shall not have abeam across the top. Type2: The tyre to be suspended

in a safe and flexiblemanner. The frame of fixturemust be substantial orsecured in such a way thatdogs cannot knock theobstacle over from eitherdirection.”Basically, our tyre complieswith the IADSA and FCI rulesbut not IKC. The thinking isthat if our dogs learn to dothe suspended tyre, theywill have no problems withthe tyre fixed to the frame, whereas vice versa couldcertainly be an issue. There are also minordifferences in the heights, but it’s always the aperturecentre which is measuredfrom the ground, so theactual jump heightdepends on the size of thetyre - minimum tyre size is~45 cm in diameter - again, depending slightly on therules. Looking at the actualjump height of our tyre, it’s30 cm when set to

small/medium height and60 cm at the large height, making it a mid-range smalland large jump and lowerthan medium height jump. The height of our tyre is NOTADJUSTABLE; it simply flipsover from small/medium tolarge. Look at the pieces atthe corners; small trianglesfor smaller dogs and largetriangles for large dogs. The real trick with the tyre isto teach the dog to aim forthe centre. While it’s ok topoint at the centre in theearly days, it can’t be along-term solution for theobstacle as you can’talways get there ahead ofyour dog. We have a“spare tyre” we use toteach the dogs to jumpthrough it. After a bit ofpractice, the dog shouldunderstand the tyre andwould no longer needexcessive pointing. This isone of the cool things

about dog training.(Well, atleast for me it is!) When yousee that “aha” moment onyour dog’s face when herealises what the this thing isall about. So keep your dogon the spare tyre until he isconfident in running to itand jumping through it onhis own, even from adistance and at areasonable height. Ofcourse you can still point inthe general direction -handling is what makesagility so interesting (again, for me anyway) - but youshouldn’t have to stick yourhand through the tyre tomake your dog do it. If youneed to handhold in thisway, your dog hasn’t quitegot the idea and needs abit more practice. Also make sure you rewardyou dog while he is jumpingthrough the tyre - not whenhe has already landed. Aquick “good dog” whilehe’s in the air followed by atreat asap will do. Clickerswork great. If you use a ballor a toy, throw it while thedog is flying through thetyre. Too often, handlersremain silent while the dogis doing exactly the thingthey wanted. Likewise, thehandler is silent when thedog does the wrong thing. How is the dog supposed toknow the difference? (Andno, don’t give out to thedog for doing it wrong. Itwas likely your fault.)Finally, one more reallyimportant point: if your doghas run past the tyre andyou need to bring himback, make sure you bringhim back around the entireobstacle. Don’t let himcome back between thetyre and the frame as that’sthe thing you don’t wanthim to do. If your dog isnever allowed to go there,he will quite likely neverthink of doing it either. If thisstarts to become a problemagain, go back andpractice on the spare tyreagain with someoneholding it.

Approved therapist to help you retore your lifeenergy. Treat conditions such as pain, stress,

disease and sports injuries

Contact Joseph McGuiness on 086 3051356

What can be treated?Because we work at an energy level it doesn’t matter what your

problem is. Our job is to deal with what causes your problem, sopeople come to our clinics with every conceivable problem be itphysical, emotional or mental. Children also benefit hugely from

the treatment.

How does the therapy work?Your body is made up of energy and if this energy system

becomes imbalanced then your body becomes. We balance thatenergy system with specially developed techniques which in turn

allow the body to heal.

What is the role of the Plexus therapist? The first step in the bodies healing process is to get your energy

system balanced and flowing again. The Therapist will alsocreate a health-care programme for you depending on what yourproblem is. This involves looking at your diet, teaching you howto deal with your stress on a daily basis, look at your muscular

and skeletal system and most importantly get your mind focusedon your journey back to health.
