It is closing its Sears flagship in Chicago, and shuttering under-performing Kmart outlets. In Canada, Sears has announced its plan to lay off more than 2,200 workers and close three call centers. Even at the top of the registry, companies aren’t immune to market vagaries. After announcing lower-than-hoped holiday sales, the shares of No. 1-ranked Best Buy fell nearly 29 percent on a single day in January. Finally, Walmart (ranked at #5) has announced plans to lay off 2,300 Sam’s Club employees. Dealerscope researched large electronics retailers in the U.S. and Canada—as well as hardware manufacturers selling direct to consumers—in order to devise its Top 101 registry. Information was gleaned from readily available sources including SEC filings, corporate press releases, business databases and local press reports. Dealerscope contacted each retailer, giving each the opportunity to confirm or contest initial figures. Many confirmed sales estimates. In January, the National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint against the company, saying it illegally disciplined and fired workers who were protesting for improved pay.
