What is ISIS?

• ISLAMIC STATES OF IRAQ AND SYRIA has emerged from radical sunni jihadist in Iraq who fought under the banner “ al-Qaeda in Iraq”

• IS has established power in large regions of Iraq and Syria and are maintaining operations throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa.

• They believes that the world’s Muslims should live under one Islamic state ruled by sharia law.

What is BOKO HARAM• BOKO HARAM which calls itself WILAYAT

GHRAB IFRIQIYAAH is an Islamic extremist group based in northeastern Nigeria also active in chad Niger and northern Cameroon.

• Boko haram promotes a version of Islam which takes it “haram” for Muslims to take part in any political and social activity associated with western society.

• This includes voting in elections, wearing shirts and trousers or receiving a secular education.

HISTORY

Founded in 2002 & lead by Abubakar Shekhu, Mohammad Yusuf. The Group had alleged links with Al-Qaida.

Boko Haram conducted its operations more or less peacefully during the first seven years of its existence. He established a religious complex and school that attracted poor Muslim families from across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

Al-Qaida had ties with Boko Haram, but broke them when they decided that Yusuf was an unreliable person.

Attacks• In 2009,Police began an investigation of

group coded name “Operation Flush” and on 26 July arrested 9 members of Boko Haram with bomb making equipment.

• On 30 July more than 700 people had been killed ,mostly Boko Haram Members, Police stations, churches, schools, prisoners and government offices had been destroyed. Yusuf was arrested and died in custody while trying to escape.

• In 2010,they attacked in several areas of Northern Nigeria.

• In 2011,August Boko Haram bombed the UN headquarters in Abuja, the first time they had struck a Western target.in which 11 UN staff members died as well as 12 others, with more than 100 injured.

• In April 2014,Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls from Chibok. Shekau announced his intention of selling them into slavery
