Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) being the fore-runner of adult education in Sri Lanka, have been in the nation’s service since 1974. Being under the purview of the president of Sri Lan-ka, is a value endorsement of the services rendered by us at both national and inter-national level, and thus our incomparable dedication imparting knowledge has de-cidedly promoted cohesive and practi-cal intellectuality. In addition, The Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission recognise SLFI as a Diploma awarding institution.

Why we are special...

We conduct a variety of training, outreach and public education and awareness programs to achieve our objectives and help people achieve theirs. We also undertake to prepare modules in three broad strategic areas of human rights, good governance and industrial relations. The information discovered is disseminated through our publications for the benefit of the public. We have long term training programmes in psychology counselling, good governance and industrial relations, languages, social integration, media and journalism, management, business development and hospitality management.

Apart from our own curriculum we undertake to customise programmes to address corporate needs i.e: busi-ness development workshops, research projects, training need assessment, key personnel training, staff training, organisational development interventions and corporate planning for private companies or state institutions

Psychology and Counselling

The over all objective of the Department of Psychology and Counselling to impart necessary knowledge and skills in professionals as well as general public in order to ensure the psychological well being of the community. This department offers Diplomas, certificate courses, and short term workshops at different levels targeting variety of audiences.

At present we are conducting a certificate course in Counselling skills for the prison staff which has a probabil-ity to develop as a diploma course.

In addition to above diploma programmes, we are plan-ning to offer a diploma in Child development and Child rights and a Certificate course in Business psychology. Psychology Department is offering several short term programmes as well.

Languages and Social Integration

Objective of this department is to facilitate social integra-tion through language and cultural exchange among the multicultural/ lingual community and improve language proficiency in public and private sector personnel.

This department conducts several certificate and diploma programme in different languages.

This department is tasked to improve required technical and soft skills of potentia journalists and ensure ethical practice of media whilst improving their media manage-ment skills. We offer a Higher National Certificate Course in Journalism and Media management and is under consideration to upgrade it to a Diploma or a Degree level in the near future. We are also currently organizing short term training programmes on the above themes.

Good Governance and Industrial Relation

To improve and empower required skills, knowledge and attitudes, both in public and private sector personnel to promote good governance practises in Sri Lankan Work setting.

Hospitality Management Unit

Sri Lanka has been a cherished tourist destination from the time Sinbad called the island ‘Serendib’, and has become vibrant since the end of civil conflict infusing a new lease of life to every tourism related profession. Sri Lanka Tourist Board anticipates over 5 million tourists by 2020, and in keeping with the anticipated demand for employment in this industry, we have identified Hospital-ity Management as an important field of education and training. We are fully equipped with kitchen, dining, catering and hostel facilities to provide practical training that are required for the hospitality management, and our strategic partnership with American Chamber of Commerce for the proposed courses and workshops will ensure high recognition.

Research Unit

This new entity aims to perform explorative research work in order to advance and enhance the quality and depth of the educational services the institute offers. It also expects to make the opportunity for aspirant researchers to carry out their work in the institute, only if such research is beneficial for the institute’s educational endeavours. In collaboration with the Canadian Eco-nomic Association and the University of Prince Edward Island, we are planning to establish a ‘Research Center for Development Studies’ shortly. We also intend to publish the Sri Lanka Journal of Development Studies; an academic journal based on developmental research through the Publication Unit of the Foundation.
