SARASHI SAMARASINGHE The Alliance fran- çaise de KANDY pre- sents ‘Nostalgie02,’an exhibition of black and white photographs by Kumar de Silva, at its Gallery at No.642, Perad- eniya Road, from Saturday (November 17) to Monday (November 26). The inau- guration ceremony will be held on Friday (November 16) at 6.30 pm. “Following its very suc- cessful run at the Lionel Wendt in Colombo in June this year, ‘Nostalgie02’ will be inaugurated in Kandy under the distinguished patronage of Prof. Ashley Halpé and Bridget Halpé,”says the Director of the Alliance française de Kandy, Dr. Jacques Soulié. “We are happy to receive this exhibition in Kandy. The reviews have been very favourable and we look for- ward to sharing the sights and scenes of France, and in black and white too, with our friends here in Kandy. This exhibition constitutes the second part of our Annual Programme Kandy Alliance Photo, echoing the Month of Photography in Paris. Kandy Alliance Photo, commencing in November 2002, featured throughout the years the works of 22 photographers from Sri Lanka, France and USA.” ‘Nostalgie02’ will take visitors through random scenes of Paris and across different parts of France and is open to the public from 9 am to 6 pm on all days. The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka together with the Japanese Embas- sy and the Japan Foundation has a treat in stores for art enthu- siasts as they will be stag- ing a variety of aesthetic events in November and December. Their Sri Lanka- Japan interactions will not only be limited to Colombo this year as the team has decided to take their pro- ductions to the Jaffna regions as well. The events are part of the celebrations to com- memorate the 60th anniver- sary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Japan. The programme sched- ule will also include a movie, ‘Wanko - The Story of Me, My Family and My Dog.’It will be screened at the Veerasingham Hall, Jaffna, on November 16. A family tale which por- trays the friendship between a boy and his dog, ‘Wanko’ is based on a true tale of a family torn apart by an unimaginable natural disaster. A Classical Music Con- cert by the Symphony Orchestra,’Music from around the world,’conducted by Kob- ayashi will also be held at the Veerasingham Hall, Jaffna, on November 17 at 4.30 pm. This concert too will feature Suzuki and entrance will be free. The Randooga Workshop which introduces the method created by Japa- nese master of jazz piano Masahiko Satoh to use improvisation as the way of nonverbal communication to enhance dialogue with oneself and between people will be held in Jaffna from November 27 to 29. A workshop will be held in Colombo too on November 26. A special concert of improvisation of jazz piano by Masahiko Satoh and sitar by Pradeep Ratnayake will be held at Lionel Wendt Theatre, Colombo, on December 2. Akiko Uesugi (singer), Isaac Smith (bassist) and others will join the duo in Colom- bo and Jaffna. The Aun & Hide Musical Concert will take place at the National Youth Service Council (NYSC), Maha- ragama, on December 7 and at the Hotel School Auditorium, Colombo, on December 8. It will feature hree talented Japanese art- ists playing traditional Jap- anese musical instruments such as Taiko (drums), Shamisen (Japanese gui- tar) and fue (Japanese flute). A Japanese tradi- tional percussion present- ing a mix of classics, semi- classics and modern music will also be on offer. “We consider these major cultural events in Colombo and Jaffna as part of Japan’s support towards the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka to promote national reconciliation and harmony and also a true expression of the warm friendly rela- tions between Japan and Sri Lanka and an excellent medium to mark such an important milestone in our friendly ties,” said Japa- nese Ambassador Nobuhito Hobo. The students of the Russian School of Art will exhib- it their talents on Canvas until Novem- ber 14 at the Russian Centre from 3pm onwards. The students are ranging from age four up to 15 years and been coached by Arjuna Jayasin- ghe for the past five years at the Russian School of Art. 80 Canvas Drawings will be on display, the wonderful work done by over 50 students. The Colom- bo Dance Plat- form 2012 under the theme of ‘Archive Fever’ will open with an exhibition of sketches and drawings of dance costumes and decor by Somabandhu Vidyapathi done over a period of 70 years. The exhibition will be held at the Goethe-Insti- tut Colombo until Novem- ber 16 from 9 am to 6 pm. Vidyapathi pioneered in the field of dance design in Sri Lanka in the 1940s. Hailing from a traditional family of dancers and tem- ple painters, he studied painting and sculpture at Vishra Bharati University, Shantiniketan and later at Travancore University in Kerala. Vidyapathi was closely associated with the dance and ballet produc- tions of Chitrasena and his masterly skill of the art of costuming and stage design remain unchallenged. He made a significant contri- bution to the world of thea- tre by his innovative approach to the concept of stage design. He created costumes whose cut revealed the beauty of the exposed human body and added a touch of brilliance to the dancer’s movements. Sri Lanka Design Festival (SLDF) 2012 will be held on November 16 at the imperial room in Mount Lavinia Hotel from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. The event is organized by the Academy of Design (AOD) in part- nership with the British Council Sri Lanka. Andy’s calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considera- ble impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship, and survival. The movie, Mesrine: L’Instinct de mort(2008) by J-François Richet will be screened on Tuesday, November 13 at 3pm and Wednesday, November 14 at 6.30pm at Alliance Française de Colombo,11, Barnes Place, Colombo 7. Mesrine, the legendary French gangster in the‘60s and ‘70s who came to be known as French Public enemy No.1& man of thousand faces. Infamous for his bravado and outrageously daring prison escapes, Mesrine carried out numerous rob- beries, kidnappings and murders in a criminal career that spanned continents until he was shot dead in 1979 by France’s notorious anti-gang unit. Thirty years after his death, his infamy lives on. Mesrine was helped along the way by beautiful and equally reckless Jeanne Schneider, a Bonnie to match his Clyde. Mesrine made up his own epic, between romanticism and cruelty, flamboyance and tragedy. The movie is most suitable for mature audience and is subtitled in English. The movie, Aliker 2009 (1h50) will be screened on November 17 at 3.30 pm at Alli- ance Française de Kandy,No.642, Peradeni- ya Road, Kandy. Martinique in the 1930s. André Aliker is a young militant communist who, against the wishes of his family, takes on the job of editing and printing his party’s one-sheet pamphlet. Adopting modern jour- nalistic methods, Aliker transforms the non- descript circular into a fully fledged newspa- per, but in doing so he makes many enemies. Those who feel most threatened by Aliker’s work are the owners of the island’s planta- tions and factories, who are becoming uneasy over the communists’ growing influ- ence. Those who feel most threatened by Aliker’s work are the owners of the island’s planta-tions and factories, who are becoming uneasy over the communists’ growing influ-ence.
