This map shows where the Americans brought the black African slaves from Africa

Thousands of Africans went to America in the 18th and 19th century because they were forced to become slaves.

Companies would go to Africa and capture men, women and children to be taken in horrific conditions on ships and destined for a cruel life in slavery.Cities such as Bristol, London and Liverpool grew rich off the trade.

HOW SLAVES WERE TREATED?

This picture shows the layout of the ship and the organisation of how the slaves were cramped. Ships carried anything from 250 to 600

slaves. They were generally very overcrowded. In many ships they were packed like spoons, with no room even to turn, most slaves that were sick were thrown over board, because of the lack of space in the boat the sick man would have given the others his sickness.

When they arrived in America they were treated like cattle, families were separated, they were beaten.

This picture shows two black male slaves playing instruments. That they made out of jaw bones, wire and wood.

Since they were so unhappy, music played an important of their life because through music they expressed their unhappiness. This is how Jazz and Blues were formed. Although this brought great happiness in their life it also brought angriness for the white people as they formed an alliance against this type of music and said it was the devils music.
