Slavery
History Some slaves were acquired when a city-state was conquered. They
mostly consisted of women and children because the men were usually killed.
Almost every civilization used slavery for cheap labor. Ancient Greece was one such country. Some of the city-states had different policies. Example: Athens allowed slaves to have more freedom than most city-
states. The Athenians made laws in order to protect slaves so that their
masters could not harm them. However, they were anything but humane to them. The court would still
kill them if they thought they deserved it. Examples: Tortures stretched them for information in court. This caused
slaves to not be reliable because they would admit to anything in order for the abuse to stop.
Trade Agoras (slave market) were used for buyers and sellers from all
around. Slavery was brought to Greece from barbarian nations. Slaves were sold as servants to the Greeks Slaves were so cheap that even the poor could easily afford a
couple. The wealthy could easily afford to own a hundred slaves.

Slave’s Rights
Slaves had few to no rights. A master could kill his slaves without suffering a penalty in most city-
states. Slaves could visit temples and attend city festivals but were barred from
the gymnasium and city assembly Some slaves were given their freedom from their masters. A few even
bought their freedom. Greeks saw nothing wrong with owning slaves. They believed that some people on earth were destined to serve
others.

History
Democracy has been around for centuries. Even before the great city of Athens, there were attempts for this
government. However, all of these governments failed. It has influenced many governments today, and most of them are still
functioning. Example: U.S.A :)

Athens
Athens had a true democracy where every citizen( Athenian males past the age of 18) represented themselves in political affairs and voted in person.
The people that lived there believed that if you were capable of voting that was your sacred duty to do so.
When people voted they would sometimes use rocks as ballots by placing one type of colored rock in a pot for yes and another colored rock for no.
Athens was considered to be a cultural trend setter for Greece so many city-states adopted their form of government.
