Reading seems easy to those who do it well. But it’s not… Reading is hard. So we need to work hard to make sure every child can do it

Vision: We all know a ‘love’ of reading can enhance our

imagination and lead us to new discoveries… but it is also vitally important for all of us to teach

reading as a life skill for our students

The language of books is unique and enhances language ability and vocabulary…

Developing each individual student’s vocabulary: Tier 2 vocabulary is developed through a specialist

programme ’Bedrock’, using cross-curricular texts that embed the words

in world themes and ideas, developing listening comprehension

Making connections to new worlds: Selected departments teach word

parts (morphology) and word histories (etymology) to encourage

independent word-learning strategies

Connecting vocabulary

to the big picture

2

Vocabulary: “Word knowledge connects with knowledge of the world – you can’t understand the word if you don’t understand the context of its use.”

We aim to integrate vocabulary into the ‘big picture’ of the world when reading complex texts

Our KS5 Reading Ambassadors hear selected KS3 students read aloud on a weekly basis , with 3

‘waves’ of the intervention running each year

All students have some opportunity to read in a variety of

forms everyday as part of tutor time, English lessons and other subjects across the curriculum

All teachers are supported with using a range of techniques for reading aloud in class on a day-

to-day basis, such as echo-reading, choral-reading, paired

reading etc

Fluency5

“Reading fluency is best described as a combination of pace and also expression/volume, phrasing and smoothness”

We aim to support students, teachers and reading ambassadors in the SLAT with reading techniques and initiatives that will support fluency
