Welcome to the course prospectus for 2015/2016
InJuly2013,aspartofthedevelopmentofarecoverycollegehereat
SLaM,weranourfirstpilot.Itconsistedof11courses.Whenweofficially
openedinthesummerof2014weran38.Sowe’rereallypleased(and
notalittleproud)thatwearenowabletoofferarangeof60courses,all
focusingonrecovery,self-management,wellbeingandstayingwell.
Asalways,co-productionisattheheartofeverythingwedoandthe
collegenowoffersavarietyofemploymentopportunitiestomorethan
20peoplewithlivedexperienceinpeerrecoverytrainerandadministrative
roles.Thisteamhasworkedtirelesslyalongsideover50SLaMhealth
andsocialcareprofessionalstodevelopanddeliverworkshopswhich
complementtheclinicalservicesofferedbySouthLondonandMaudsley
NHSFoundationTrust.
Ourpeerrecoverytrainershavedemonstratedthatitisindeedpossibleto
’liveaswellaspossible’bydevelopingstrategiestoself-manageandcope
withtheupsanddownsofmentalhealthrecovery.Theyareinspirational,
bothtoworkwithandaspositiverolemodelsforothersstrugglingwith
mentalill-healthordistress.

Manyofourstudentshavetoldusthatlisteningtothepeertrainers’
ownrecoveryexperiences,aswellasthoseoftheirfellowstudents,has
provedimmenselypowerfulinbreakingdowntheperceivedbarriersof
communicationandstigmabetweenpeoplewithlivedexperienceand
boththementalhealthservicesandthecommunityatlarge.
We’dliketoexpressourgratitudetoeveryoneoftheSLaMstaff
memberswhohave,despitethedemandsoftheirclinicalroles,somehow
foundthetimetoco-produceandco-deliversuchawidevarietyof
courses.Withouttheircommitmentandexpertise,thecollegewouldnot
havebeenabletohavehadsuchanimpactinsuchashortperiodoftime.
Andjudgingbythefeedbackwearegettingfromourstudentsthat
impactcanbetransformational.Byhelpingthemtodevelopconfidence,
byofferingthemachancetoreclaim‘hope,controlandopportunity’,the
collegecanactasasteppingstonetothenextstageintheirrecovery.
Finally,ourbiggestthankyougoesouttothe950plusstudentswhohave
attendedthecollegesincelastsummer.Theknowledge,experienceand
supportyoubringintotheclassroomisthevitalthirdelementinthe
co-productionexperience.Youmakeworkinghereatthecollegeajoy.

Understanding mental health difficulties and treatment
Introduction to Psychological Therapies
One-dayworkshop
Whatarepsychologicalortalkingtherapies?Themorningsession
ofthisone-dayworkshopwillexplorehowpsychologicaltherapies
canhelppeople,thepotentialrisksandthingstotakeintoaccount
whenconsideringthem.Studentswillgetageneraloverviewof
howtherapiescanbeaccessedincludingreferralandassessment
processes.Duringtheafternoonsessionwewillexploreandexplain
thedifferenttypesofpsychologicalapproachesthatareavailablein
secondarycare,primarycareandinthevoluntarysector,andwhat
youcanexpectfromtakingpartinthesetypesoftherapies.
Understanding Psychosis
Half-dayworkshop
Theexperienceofpsychosis,forexamplehearingvoicesor
experiencingalteredperceptions,issurprisinglycommon.
Beingdiagnosedwithpsychosiscanbeafrighteningandlife
changingevent.Therearealotofmisconceptionsandstigma
regardingpsychosiswhichcanmakecomingtotermswith
itevenharder.
Thisworkshoplooksatavarietyoftreatmentandself-helpoptions
andpersonalexperiencesofpsychosis.Italsofocusesontheways
peoplehavemanagedtheirexperiencessothattheycangeton
withlivingtheirlives.
Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Bipolarisamooddisordercharacterisedbyextremechangesin
mood.Althoughweallhavemoodswings,inbipolardisorderthese
canbecomeunmanageableandoverwhelming-individualscan
experiencesevereand/orrapidmoodswingsthatcanlastseveral
weeksormonths,farbeyondthenormalupsanddowns.

Theaimofthiscourseistoexplorethefactsandrealitiesofbipolar
disorder,howitisdiagnosedandtreated,howyoucanmanageit,
andhowyoucansupportsomeonethatyoucareabout.
Understanding Depression
Half-dayworkshop
Depressionisawordwhichisoftenusedtoexplainperiodswhen
wearefeeling‘low’,‘sad’orabit‘blue’.‘Feelinglow’issomething
mostpeopleexperiencefromtimetotimeandisanaturalpartof
humanexperience.
However,whenthesefeelingsbecomemoresevere,begintotake
holdofyourlifeandjustwon’tgoaway,itmaybesomethingmore
seriouslike‘depression’.Depressionisacommonconditionandas
suchwenowknowalotaboutitseffectphysicallyandmentally
andhowyoucanmanageit.Understandingthesigns,symptoms,
causes,andtreatmentofdepressionisthefirststeptoovercoming
theproblem.
Theworkshopaimstoexplorethefactsaboutdepression,howit
isdiagnosedandwhatitmightfeelliketohavedepression.Italso
aimstoprovideyouasafeandcomfortableenvironmentwhere
speakingaboutyourexperiencescouldunburdenyouorpossibly
helpotherswiththeirdepression.
Understanding Anxiety

Anxietyissomethingweallexperiencefromtimetotime.Most
peoplecanrelatetothoseanxious,butterflyfeelingswhendoing
somethingwhichfeelsuncertainorfeelingfearfulaboutsitting
exams,havingamedical,goingtothedentist.
Itisanaturalfeelingandcanbeuseful,asitwarnsuswhenwe
needtotakeaction,whenwemaybeindangerorcanevenhelp
ustoperformbetter.

However,anxietycanchangefromsomethingeveryoneexperiences
inmildforms,tosomethingwhichispersistent,excessiveor
overwhelming.Itcanbegintointerferewithmanyaspectsofyour
life–fromconfidence,tophysicalwellbeingandengagementin
basicorcomplexactivitiesofliving.
Theaimofthiscourseistoexplorethefactsaboutanxiety,makinga
distinctionbetweencommonanxietyandanxietydisorders,exploring
thepossiblecausesandconsideringhowtofaceitheadon.
Understanding Panic Disorder

Mostofuswillhaveapanicattackatsomepointinourlives.Itisa
suddenrushofanxietythatseemstocomeoutoftheblueandis
characterisedbymanybodysensations,suchasfeelingdizzy,heart
racing,feelinghotorfeelingnauseous.Understandablypeople
usuallyfeelscaredduringapanicattackandfearthatsomething
terribleisgoingtohappen,suchastheymightpassout,lose
controlorevenhaveaheartattackanddie.
Panicdisorderisananxietydisorderwherepeoplehaverecurrent
panicattacks.Individualswithpanicdisordertypicallychange
thethingstheydoandtheplacestheygoastheirmainfearis
havingfurtherpanicattacks.Whilepeoplewithotheranxiety
disordersmayexperiencepanicattacks,forexamplesomeone
withsocialanxietymighthaveapanicattackwhenhavingtogive
apresentation,thisisnotthesameaspanicdisorderbecausethe
individualismorelikelytofearthesocialsituationitselfratherthan
thepanicattack,althoughtheywillundoubtedlyfinditunpleasant.
Thisworkshopaimstoexploreandunderstandwhatpanicdisorder
isinmoredepthandthedifferentformsitmaytake.Wewillthen
discussarangeofcopingmethodsandstrategiesthatpeoplemight
findusefulandinparticularwhatcognitivebehaviouraltreatments
areavailableandhowtheycanhelp.

common,long-lastingconditionsthataffecthowpeopleviewand
managetheiremotionsandhowtheyrelatetootherpeople.

generalandhowitcanaffectotheraspectsofaperson’smental
andphysicalhealth.Wewillalsodiscussspecifictreatmentsand
howpeoplecanhelpthemselvestoregainameasureofcontrolin

Understanding Eating Disorders

Eatingdisordershavebothbiologicalandpsychologicalcausesand
canaffectanyofusregardlessofage,genderorethnicity.Butthey
aretreatable.Recoveryispossible,butbecauseofthestigmaor
misperceptions,somepeoplemaynotgetthehelptheyneed.Itis
importantforpeopletounderstandwhateatingdisordersareand
whattheyarenot.
Thisworkshopaimstoremovethemysterysurroundingthisgroup
ofconditionsandexploresupportoptions,givingparticipantsbetter
understandingaboutrecoveryfromeatingdisorders.
Understanding Self Harm

Ratesofself-harmintheUKhaveincreasedoverthepastdecade
andareamongstthehighestinEurope.However,itstillremainsa
muchmisunderstoodissue.
Thisworkshopwilllookatwhatcomesundertheumbrellaof‘self-
harm’andwewillexploresomeofthemanypossiblereasonswhy
somepeopleharmthemselves.
Wewillexploretheroleofprofessionalsandservices,discusshow
someonewhoself-harmscanreducetherisks,andlookatthe
typesofsupportwhichareuseful.

affectedbyautismandthosewhocareforthem.Factsand
commonmisconceptionsaboutautism,diagnosis,treatmentand
careoptionswillbeexploredalongwiththestrategiesandservices
availabletosupportpeoplewithautismandtheirfamiliesand
carerstolivemeaningfulandsociallyinclusivelives.

Peopleoftenexperienceproblemswithbothmentalhealthand
substanceuse(alcoholanddrugs).Eachcancausedifficultiesand
togethertheycanhaveabigimpactonthepersonthemselvesand
theirfamilyandcarers.Findingtherighthelpandsupportcan

voices.Hearingvoicesisnotalwaysasignofmentalill-healthand
theexperiencecandiffergreatlybetweenpeople.

Ouruniquenessasindividualsisoftenreflectedinthevoicespeople
experience.Thesevoicescanhavedistinctcontent,identities,
meaningandimpactonthepersonexperiencingthem.
Thevoicesandexperiencecanbedistressingforthepersonwho
hearsvoicesandforthoseofferingcareandsupport.Oftenthose
offeringsupport(eitherasacareroraworker)mayfeelunsure
whattodotohelpsomeonewhoishearingvoices.

Understanding Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Thisworkshopwillgiveanintroductiontothediagnosis,treatment
andexperienceoftraumaandpost-traumaticstress.Theimpactof
societal,culturalandindividualattitudesandbeliefsabouttrauma
andpost-traumaticstressonaperson’swellbeingwillbeexplored
duringdiscussionandgroupwork.Theworkshop,co-produced
bypeoplewithlivedexperienceandstafffromSLaM’sCentrefor
AnxietyDisordersandTrauma,willalsofocusonpersonalrecovery

LivingwithDiabetesisaself-managementcourseforanyadult
livingwithtype2diabetes.Thiscourseincludesdiabetesspecific
informationwithintheessentialtopicsformanaginganylong-term

anddrink.
Most,ifnotall,ofthevenuesweuseofferteaandcoffee,
althoughsometimesthismayneedtobepurchased(dependingon
thevenue’sfacilities).
Wearenotabletoprovidelunch,anditisadvisablethatyoubring
somethingwithyouifthecourselastsallday–justincasethe
shopsareadistanceawayfromthevenue.
