- CANPIELD LAKE: The lake has more water ia It than It has had for over twenty

years. The duok resting island is covered and only the smartweed growing on it marks the place. It was visited by Mr, Lawson the first week in August and also on September 9th, The lake was posted on the first visit. The south side of the lake has good cover, but the rest has been grased by sheep and no cover is left. About one third of the lake was covered with smartweed and provides good food for ducks. About 500 ducks were counted the first time and about 400 the second time. The sloughs around the refuge in the area were well filled with ducks which may move into the lake after hunting season opens. The lake has been quite extensively used by the public for swimming and pionioing, since it is filled and there is a good gravel beach on the east shore.

Fences on the dam had been washed out or taken down by landowner*

y LITTLE LAKE i / Little Lake was visited Sept* 14th by Mr* Lawson* The water level

7SUNBURST LAKE:

The water was one foot below the spillway level when visited on Sept* 14th by Mr* Lawson* The dam was in good condition except far expansion carcks in the spillway* No water was seeping through the spillway* The cracks had been closed with concrete, but had re-opened by freezing* Cover conditions at the refuge were good* The fence around the dam was up and in good condition* One small fleck of 25 mallards was using the refuge* The area is used by the public for swimming and fishing* The only fish caught are bullheads*

APPERTx ^

There were an estimated 400 mallards and pintails using this refuge* Also twenty-fire oeots*

The area south of the road in Seo* 10 is not under water at present, but is still wet* The water in the marsh is up to the road on the north side. LONG LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

EASEMENT DISTRICT NO* I

NARRATIVE REPORT

JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH, AND APRIL, 1943

LITTLE LAKE*

This area was visited on April XT, at which time signs of high water were evident, but there was little if any change in the dam or spillway* Minor repairs were made to the fenoe at the end of the spillway, as out-going ice had apparently pulled the wire loose from the posts* About SO ducks were seen including American Mergansers, Souu^ and Pintails*

FLICKER TAIL

This refuge was first visited on April 10* It was discovered that the rubble masonry spillway had washed out completely in the recent flodd except for a small section of the upstream apron on the west side* The wing wall on the east side was broken loose end partaally undermined, ready to drop into the stream* The dam Itself was in good condition exoept for minor evidence of wave action*

Several small, irregular areas of shallow water above the dam covered possibly an aore or two, but most of the fmrmer water area is now sand or mud flats* /

A few do sen assorted ducks, and a number of Yellow Legs, Sandpipers and Killdeers/ were dabbling in the shallow water or using the mud flats*

The other easement refuges in Easement Die trio t No* 1 were not visited during this period due largely to the roads being general impussable as a result of snow drifts or flood conditions*
