SLAC FACULTY APPOINTMENTSJonathan Dorfan has beenappointed Associate Profes-sor with tenure on the SLACfaculty. Dr. Dorfan has beenwith the Mark II collabora-tion since 1976, serving as astaff physicist with Experi-mental Groups C and E. Hehas had major responsibilityfor the daily operation of theexperiment and is leading theexperimental upgrade of theMark II detector for its trans-fer to the SLC.

John Jaros, 01 rLxperlmen-tal Group E, has been pro-moted to Associate Profes-sor at SLAC with tenure. Dr.Jaros has been on the SLACfaculty since 1979 and hasbeen very active in the design,construction, and use of veryprecise drift chambers for de-tecting secondary vertices inparticle reactions and measur-ing particle lifetimes.

Walter Toki has been ap-pointed Assistant Professor onthe SLAC faculty. Dr. Tokihas been a Research Associatefor the last five years with Ex-perimental Group D. Dr. Tokijhas been taking an increas-ingly important leadershiprole in the Mark III collabora-tion experiments at SPEAR.

SLD APPROVED

The SLD detector was recently approved by the lab-oratory with the recommendation of its ExperimentalProgram Advisory Committee, the (EPAC).

The committee had requested the collaboration to pre-pare a design report and submit 20 copies before itsmeeting. Dave Fryberger, EPAC Secretary, asked thegroup to leave the copies on his desk, obviously ex-pecting the usual ten or twenty page experimental pro-posal. The SLD, which some think stands for SLAC'sLargest Detector, didn't fit that mold. Marty Breiden-bach, co-spokesman for the detector with Columbia'sCharlie Baltay, clearly stands behind the product.

COLLIDER CONSTRUCTION

When the SLC tunneling machine arrivedhere early this year, it was greeted by engi-neers from SLAC and the SLC constructionmanagement firm, Tudor Engineering.

This machine, and another which arrivedlater, are now underground and quickly ad-vancing around the two Collider arcs towardthe end of the linac.The tunnels are sched-uled to be completed before the linac turnsback on in October.

There are now three main construction ar-eas: the north tunnel entrance near PEPIR-12, the south tunnel entrance near PEPIR-4, and the SLC Experimental Hall nearPEP IR-2. This construction involves con-tinual traffic of fast-moving heavy equip-ment, twenty four hours a day and casualvisits cannot be allowed: The north side ofthe injector end of the linac is also restrictedwhile the second damping ring vault is un-der construction.

THE MARK II ROLLS OUT FOR UPGRADES

The photograph on the front cover shows the Mark

II being prepared to roll off the beam line at PEP. The

endcap hanging at the left of the photo has been re-

tracted to expose the central section. The ring of small

white cylinders are at the end of the trigger counters.

These surround the large central drift chamber and lie

just inside the coil that produces the magnetic field.

The experiment will remain off-line for about six

months to begin upgrades that will prepare this detec-

tor for experiments in the Linear Collider at the end of

1986. The main changes will be the replacement of the

coil, which was damaged two years ago, and the inser-

tion of a new drift chamber. One of the two endcap

detector systems will also be replaced now with a newversion.

ERRATUM

There were some inadvertant errors made in theattribution of scientific work in the article entitledQuarks, Antiquarks, and Glue, which appeared as specialissue Number 6 of the Beam Line. I left out the nameof Jerome Friedman, who was co-leader with HenryKendall of the MIT group involved in electron scat-tering experiments at SLAC. I also failed to mentionthat the experiment which discovered particles contain-ing charmed quarks was a collaboration of groups fromSLAC with a group from the Lawrence Berkeley Lab-oratory led by Gerson Goldhaber and George Trilling,and that the experiments which tested for parity viola-tion in electron scattering included collaborators fromYale, CERN, Aachen, and Hamburg as well as the SLACgroup.

I sincerely apologize to these people and to the manyother experimenters at SLAC whose work was men-tioned without specific attribution.

THE END OF THEORETICAL PHYSICSThe following is excerpted from an article by Richard Par-lour in the 12 April 1984 issue of New Scientist magazine.

Theoretical particle physics is dying from a kind ofsenility. We know how each new advance in theoret-ical physics relies upon more and more sophisticatedmathematics; and we know how mathematics is a lin-ear sequence of concepts each of which must be thor-oughly understood before comprehension is possible ofthe next; and we know how mathematics is uniqueamong the sciences in not discarding old ideas as itaugments itself with new ...

It follows that each new generation of theoreticalphysicists has a longer and longer list of mathemat-ical concepts to absorb before they can reach theirsubject's frontier, and therefore, because the brain'slearning rate is limited, that each new generation mustspend longer and longer in the lecture hall before theyare ready to begin research.

But history shows that - for whatever mysteriousreason - crucial advances in theoretical physics arenever made by people older than their middle twen-ties: thus the period in a theoretician's life when heor she is in principle capable of a major breakthrough

-the interval between completion of their studies ofmathematics and the drying up of their radical cre-ativity -is year by year becoming shorter. Already itis brief: soon it will be briefer: eventually it must besqueezed away to non-existence. Within the foreseeablefuture, no theoretical physicist will have mastered themathematics of the subject until he or she is alreadytoo old to be able to extend it significantly. Purely be-cause of the limitations of the human brain, progressin theoretical physics will soon become as impossible Asin experimental.

There you have it; the whole SLAC Theory Departmentdone in by hard fact and cold logic. On the other hand it'squite a good show to have been the first to learn as muchabout a subject as humans are capable of knowing - sortof an intellectual four-minute mile.

Now they can accept new challenges, such as beating theexperimentalists in the annual softball game on 17 June.

BOB ADAMSON MOVES ON

Bob Adamson, desert rat, abalone fisherman, moun-taineer, all-round athlete, collector of automotivememorabilia, and ebullient organizer of social events,is leaving SLAC again. This isn't the first time he hasleft to look for greener pastures, and it may not be thelast.

Bob came to SLAC in1965 to work as a designerfor the Bubble Chambergroup. Now, after almosttwo decades and millionsof pictures, the grand old40-inch bubble chamberhas been shut down. Notonly was Bob the chief de-signer for its magnet andthe measuring devices, hemanaged to get into thefabrication and assemblyas well. He even paintedit himself.

His largest project was the design of the prototypemagnets for the PEP ring. For one experiment in theresearch yard, Bob assembled a huge pile of shield-

·ing, approximating one of the minor pyramids of theNile. It looked like any other shielding stack until Bobtopped it off with the engine block from his old Chevytruck to give it that Adamson touch.

In the Sierras, Bob was the best trail cook, alwayscarried the heaviest pack, and was always the firston top. On one occasion when the party reached thecampsite, he forgot what ballast he was carrying andwith a whooped "At last, we made it!" dropped hispack, to be greeted by the unmistakable crunch of agallon jug of Chablis meeting rock ...

After the judge declared Bob single again, he be-came the most eligible bachelor on the Peninsula. Hispredilection for ragged T-shirts tie-dyed in Pinot Noirand his normal Neanderthal gait drove SLAC'S distaffto distraction. He found a soul-mate in Jan Burlingame(now an esteemed associate editor of the SLAC BeamLine) and it was only a matter of time before they weremarried. The ceremony was held in Eleanor Park inPalo Alto. It was the SLAC social event of the yearand was attended by hundreds of their friends.

Bob is such an up-beat character that one could goon for pages recounting humorous Adamson anecdotes,but he has had his share of troubles. In March, Bob'svan was wrecked in a serious accident. Bob emergedbruised and battered, but otherwise uninjured. Hisson, Rob, suffered a broken thigh. Jan is still in thehospital recovering from multiple injuries.

We have lost an innovative designer and one of ourmost colorful characters. We all wish Bob the best ofluck in his new career.

MARILYN MONEY - IN MEMORIAM

Marilyn Money passed away recently after a longbattle with cancer. She will be best remembered byher many friends at SLAC as that very pleasant ladybehind the desk at Crafts Shops, with a smile and goodword for everyone.

Marilyn attended HighSchool and College in LosAngeles and began a promis-ing career as a dancer. Shebecame assistant choreog-rapher for the MGM Stu-dios in Culver City andworked with the big namesin Hollywood musicals formore than ten years beforeshe was crippled by polioin 1952.

Marilyn and her husband John moved to Los Altos,raised a family, and in 1966 Marilyn joined SLAC.

Her first job in her more than twelve-year associ-ation with SLAC was as a Secretary for the KlystronDepartment in the Test Laboratory. In September 1970she transferred to the Accelerator Physics I&C Groupin the Electronics Building where she worked for fiveyears. In December 1975 she transferred again. Thistime to the Plant Engineering Department PMU Groupin the Crafts Building. Injuries suffered in a fall forcedher to take medical leave in January 1979.

Marilyn's good humor and pleasant personality wereinfectious to all who met her. This cheerfulness wasespecially impressive when she got up from her desk toget supplies, run the copy machine, or deliver messages- she couldn't walk without a cane or crutches.

REQUIEM FOR AN ACCELEPEDE

The soul of the Stanford Linear Accelepede dis-appeared into the breaker mists immediately after itcrossed the finish line of the Bay-to-Breakers race onSunday, May 20. Many of its bodily parts were noticedwandering about the Golden Gate Park's polo field butthe whole was gone, probably never to be seen again.A Professor of Endangered Species, who did not wanthis name used because then he too might become one,said, "I am not surprised. It is very remarkable whenan accelepede survives that long. Two races in onelifetime - very unusual." As the accelepede caught upwith and passed the ribsepede (the MacArthur Parkrestaurant entry which resembled a side of ribs) a me-dia reporter was heard to intone, "Folks, it looks likeit's dying." It was.

The accelepede was ornamented this year with a Some quarks are smixed bunch of charmed and strange particles. Thecharms were Teresa Beeman, Pat Burchat, MaryCrume, Nancy Gex and Rob Witthaus. The strangethings were Pam Clayton, Tom Kamakani and DanManley-Arrieta. They were as strange as the charmswere charming. Ready for injection at the other endwere a bunch of electrons and positrons (Lamont Bar-ton, Pam Bates, Pam Caselli, Marian Gex, Harold Ito,Ken Martell, Al Odian, Heather Rock, Anne Schlagen-haft and Nancy Witthaus). The accelepedestrians wereJudy Beaver, Jackie Caselli, Les Cottrell, Willie De-Haas, Paul Fontenot, Bob Gex, Ken Harmount, Char-lie Martin, Bill Pierce, Steve Rock, Alan Spragens, KenWitthaus and John Yelton. All this held together byrepair technicians, Harold Hanerfeld and Heidi Schell-
