Measurement of slab width is achieved by using Sequence Technologies ST200 WidthTRACKER laser systems during the continuous casting or rolling process. These non-contact measurement systems are resourceful tools in monitoring the result of complex changes in the steel making process and can assist in minimizing quality issues by providing an early warning of out of tolerance slab dimensions. As the slab shape varies with changes in parameters such as cast speed, cooling and steel temperature, the ST200 is an effective solution for immediate feedback to operations and quality personnel.

The ST200 WidthTRACKER is a non-contact laser system designed to accurately measure slab width in order to optimize control of slab dimensions. The system uses two ST203 high speed triangulation

lasers and proprietary software to preciously measure steel slabs in harsh mill conditions. The sensors are typically positioned before the torches or shear to enable continuous width measurement. The PC user interface continuously measures and graphically displays the slab edge distance from the centerline of the machine and the overall width. Customers may interface with the ST200 system through typical third party client software such as RSLinx or Kepware for long term quality assurance reviews as well as data to position torches for cutting and control automatic mold width adjustments. KEY FEATURES Width accuracy of 0.02 (0.50mm) Width measurement span: 100 [2540mm] Repeatable over large slab temperature variations Tolerance limits for width slab tracking Trending and data logging for quality assurance Integration with Level 2 systems Rugged protective enclosures with cooling BENEFITS Optimize production and machine yield Recognize out of shape and dimension conditions Optimize width control with feedback to adjustable mold Reduce edge defects

Measurement Principle The ST200 uses two triangulation sensors that measure width by projecting a beam of laser light that creates a spot target on the slab narrow face. Reflected light from the surface is viewed from an angle by a CMOS detector array inside the ST203 sensor. The width is calculated from the image pixel data using the systems proprietary software.
