Dear Friends,
Our parishes are all about bringing people along to “discipleship” which is just a bible word for a real personal relaon-ship with Jesus. That’s what every Catholic is called to be – it’s like actually geng to be fully what God wants for us.
One of the best things I’ve found for geng people going on that path is a ten week program called Alpha. It’s a sort of introducon to the basics in an environment that’s friendly and inving. You have a meal with others, watch a video on quesons we all have, and in a small group, discuss those things.
Maybe you’re a pewsier that just comes to Mass and you don’t know too much about the faith. Alpha is a perfect next step for you.
Maybe you’ve been off and on in your faith. Alpha gives you an opportunity to explore what you believe with others in a similar situaon.
Maybe you’re more out than in… don’t worry. Alpha is an easy, gentle exploraon of the faith with no pressure and no judgement.
On March 7, St. Lawrence Parish will be starng it up. We gather at 7:00 for a great meal, and we’re done by 9:00.
As the name Alpha suggests, it is a “beginning” – a beginning step in a personal way of living faith and understanding one’s relaonship with Jesus. You can register at brewsteralpha.com or on our website.
We’re reaching out to everyone – commied Catholics, occasional Catholics, those who struggle with quesons of faith and those with no faith at all. Alpha is for everyone, and is meant to be a new start and a fresh look at quesons of faith and the issues that really maer in life.
It is for everybody, whether you are sure about your faith or not very sure. It is a friendly atmosphere where it is okay to bring up quesons and no one will judge you. The idea is to explore faith together and help each other.
It isn’t a catechism course or a doctrine course, but a place we can walk together and talk together. You’ll make new friends and maybe rediscover some things you had forgoen about.
Many of us have been worried about friends and relaves who no longer pracce the faith and we have wondered how to bring them back. Maybe they are inacve, or “fallen-away”, or Christmas and Easter Catholics. It doesn’t maer… bring them along and see what the Holy Spirit does.
Go to brewsteralpha.com to get more informaon and sign up. You’ll be glad you did.
God bless,
Fr. Richard Gill

GOSPEL REFLECTION Mark 9:2-10 Fr. Donal Neary SJ
Jesus heard at the Transfiguraon that he was beloved! We all want to know that someone would say they love us.
And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so? I did. And what did you want? To call myself beloved, to feel myself beloved on the earth. -R Carve
Favoured We are all the me God’s favoured ones – it’s ourselves that miss out on it. We live in the big wide world of God’s love, and Jesus on Tabor was allowing himself be loved in the radiant light of God, shining even in the cloud.
Together we are loved…together on this mountain. Light is caught from one to the other. We are the light of Tabor mountain for each other. All are loved. The one I like and don’t like! The radiant body of Christ was hammered and killed later by ourselves. Love killed at Calvary rose again. Love cannot die.
Transfigure or Disfigure We can transfigure or disfigure each other. We can bring out the light and the hope and the joy in our belonging to God!
We can transfigure a school, a parish, a community any group by first of all our being loved by God and leng love go out. If we really believe we are loved by God then the world we live in is transfigured, changed.
In the light of the cross, the sign of our faith, the way we are saved. Light of God, love me, save me, call me.
Aer a brief pause for silent reflecon share your answers, ideas or feelings.
1. Do I expect only moments of glory from God? Do I remain faithful when things are not going my way?
2. Am I willing to walk with others in their moments of suffering?
STEPHEN MINISTRY Elaine Joiner When I read about the Stephen Ministry I quickly became interested. Having friends who over the past months have suffered losses–—a loved one, independence, good health, divorce—I realized the need for Chrisan care-giving. I wanted to help in similar circumstances but felt lacking the skills.
Through my training for the Stephen Ministry, I have en-countered other like-minded parishioners and a team of leaders equipped to train us. At our weekly meengs, we pray and role play and learn from the strengths of one an-other.
One of the best things for me was receiving a prayer part-ner with whom I pray and pray for at the same me each day. I have become more aware that without prayer change does not happen and prayer has become more important in my life.
With a background in teaching, I am used to being the one who controls situaons. As a Stephen Minister, I am learn-ing to reverse that role. I am learning to be a good listener, to tune in to the feelings of others and to put others’ feel-ings and needs first. I acknowledge that while I can be a caregiver it is only Jesus who can be the cure giver.

What almsgiving really means Giving alms has always been an important part of Lent. For many people, it means giving money to Catholic charies or some other good cause. But the concept of almsgiving goes much deeper. It is our response to the teachings of Jesus that encourage us to reach out to peo-ple in need—not just with our money—but with our me and our talents. Today we might call it 'stewardship'.
Lent gives us the opportunity to culvate a spirit of gener-osity. It gives us a chance to share what we have and who we are with other people. It puts us in communion with others and helps us understand that we are all members of the Body of Christ. Think carefully about how you will share your me, your talents and your treasure during Lent. Keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who him-self said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).

10 Reasons you Need to go on a Retreat This Year by Nick Bernard
Some of my deepest and most impacul encounters with God throughout my faith journey have come when I’ve taken me to step back from the world and focus on the Father. Retreats through parishes or schools provide amazing opportunies to encounter God. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that you need a retreat and here’s why:
1. You Need Rest God worked for six days and rested on the seventh, consecrang this day to rest. In the Gospels, Christ tells us that the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27), so we ought to recognize our human need for rest. Retreats allow us to dedicate me to the Lord and restore ourselves so that we might be beer disciples of Christ. Without this necessary and holy rest, we are quick to burn out in our missionary work as disciples.
2. Your Savior Needed a Retreat Throughout the Gospels, Christ periodically takes me to step away from the world, and even from His disciples, to be alone with His Father. Jesus knew that aer pouring Himself into His ministry, He needed to fill Himself back up by spending me alone with the Father in prayer. Retreats give us the same opportunity to fill ourselves back up by emulang Christ, Himself, and reconnecng with God in personal prayer.
3. You Need Community Retreats are perfect opportunies to build community with people who care about their faith. Friendships made on retreats are most oen formed around a mutual love for Christ, and these relaonships are the ones that will get us to heaven. Friendships centered on Christ will change your life, and a retreat is a perfect place to foster these relaonships.
4. You Need to be on God’s Time While on retreat, we live on God’s me, also known in Greek as Kairos. While adhering to a schedule focused on our heavenly Father, we do everything in a different light and for a different reason. Retreats give us the chance to step out of our normal roune and live on God’s me, consecrang every moment to Him.
5. You Need Reflecon Many retreats encourage us to reflect on who we have been, who we are now, and who God desires us to be in the future. Most of us probably don’t have the me to meditate on who we’ve been in the past, but retreats give us this opportunity. By reflecng on who we’ve been, we can beer understand who God desires us to become.
6. You Need Prayer Prayer on a retreat may be with other people, individually, through the sacraments, or a combinaon of these. This prayer happens because we’ve removed ourselves from our day-to-day roune and can listen to God more closely.
7. Your Life Needs to get Wrecked Retreats can wreck us. Stepping into God’s love for a retreat weekend might reveal to us a relaonship we need to change, a prayer style we ought to alter, or a perspecve we hadn’t yet seen about a life decision. While on retreat, we should keep our minds and hearts open to the ways in which God might be trying to wreck us in order to build us back up anew.
8. You Need Reconciliaon Many retreats offer opportunies clear our lives of obstacles that block us from loving God fully by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliaon. Retreats may also give us the chance to reconcile with others through prayer and conversaon. In the same way that retreats allow us reset our rhythm of life, the gi of the Sacrament of Reconciliaon gives us the chance to clear our lives of the sin that separates us from God and others.
9. You Need to Receive Jesus to be a Disciple If we take our Chrisan lives seriously, we realize that we were created not only to receive Christ in our own lives, but also to share Him with others. We can answer Jesus’ call to be missionary disciples by sharing Him with those we’re closest to. Retreats allow us to refocus our gaze on Him and reunite our efforts to His Spirit, enabling us to persevere in our mission as disciples.
10. You Need to Be Open to Changing Your Life Through meeng people on fire for their faith and encountering the Father in new ways, we gather the spiritual tools needed to truly transform our lives and give ourselves to Christ. In stepping away from the world and leaning into God’s love, we have an amazing opportunity to understand our faith in a whole new way and claim it as our own. Retreats can be the crucial beginnings to a transformave journey with Christ.
Have I convinced you to go on a retreat? If you answered no, that’s all right; God will reveal Himself to each of us in His ming. Nonetheless, I urge you to pray about making a retreat and see how your heart moves in response. God has great things in store for you, and a retreat might just be the next step in your journey of faith!
