Dear Friends,
You’ll remember that last Fall we spent some me in the pulpit with a “stewardship” iniave to increase our offer-tory at St. Lawrence. More broadly we set out to encourage everyone to think in terms of what we give back to the Lord from all he has given us. We emphasized that our generosity in giving reflects our gratude to God and is an act of worship and of trust in his providence. When we give first to God from our income, we make a decision – to put ourselves and our families in his hands and he will provide for us from his infinite goodness and love. We chal-lenged all parishioners to ask themselves a simple but important queson: what is the percentage of our total income we give?
I’m happy to report you came through so beaufully.
My hope had been for a 15-20% increase over 2017. For the first six months of this year, we tracked the collecons. For 2018, our overall offertory is up 20.69% over the previous year. In dollar terms, that means an increase from $9850 to $11,900 on a weekly basis. That is an excellent increase and we hope we can all connue at the same level of generosity. Thank you!
We also encouraged everyone to seriously consider switching to the electronic giving, or automac gi transfer called We Share. This easy to use program allows you to set a regular amount for each Sunday and feast day and have it transferred directly to the parish, without having to remember to write checks or bring a gi to church each week. And it saves the parish me and administrave expense because we don’t have to process as many checks.
The We Share automac giving increased as well as a share of our total offertory – from 22% to 30% of the total, and about a 60% increase in dollar terms! If you haven’t signed up for We Share yet, I encourage you to do so – it is fast and easy. Instrucons are in this bullen or you can call Maureen in the office for help.
Thank you for your generous stewardship – it is a sign that we are growing in our gratude to God for all his blessings in our lives and trusng that he will repay us a hundredfold as the Gospel teaches.
And your giving has enabled the parish to connue to find excing new ways to reach out to people and offer them a chance to find God in their lives. Our creave new “Family Program” in place of tradional CCD, our “Edge” youth ministry for middle schoolers, our adult discipleship and formaon programs, our evangelizaon efforts on cable and social media – all are fruits of your good stewardship and generosity. Thank you for pung your faith into acon!
One major challenge we sll do have at St. Lawrence is the balance of our debt on the beauful Church renovaons. Some of it is being paid down with pledges already made. We’ll discuss that issue more in detail in the coming weeks.
Once again, thank you for your wonderful stewardship that is making this an amazing parish!
God bless,
Fr. Richard Gill

married outside the church? If you or a family member is married outside the Church (e.g. By a jusce of the peace or a non-Catholic ceremony), it is not considered a valid marriage by the Church. It is important to receive the Sacrament of Matrimony (or as some say, have the marriage "blessed") in order to live fully the life of the Church and parcipate in the sacra-ments. We're here to help. Call Fr. Gill at the Parish Office to discuss the situaon and see what can be done _______________________________________________

lost and found Tracey Earl Welliver, MTS Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfecon in us. This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spir-it. Moreover, we have seen and tesfy that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world. —1 John 4:11-14
When I was around the age of 6, my good friend, Max, moved away. I had known him for less than two years, but I was so fond of him, his moving away really hurt. I was living in Northern Virginia and he was moving to Pisburg. Pisburg might as well have been in another country. I knew it was far and that was the end of this relaonship. I woke up in the middle of the night aer he had le that day, crying and yelling. My mother’s arms tried to comfort me as well as they could. But this was real pain, even for a six year old. It was love. The First Leer to Saint John states, “Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfecon in us. This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us.” I do not want to make too bold a statement or reduce John’s words to simple senment, but I think the love I felt that night when I was six was prey close to the perfected love menoned in the passage. A child, so innocent and sll untouched by the cynicism and apathy of an adult world, experience something so deep and hard to under-stand that I am certain my mother classified it as immature emoons that would quickly fade away. As adults, we think tat all the me. Yet 40 years later, I sll vividly remember it. I cannot remember Max’s last name or visualize his face, but I can sll recall the feelings and emoons of that event.
What if we tried harder to take John’s words to heart and love more people like a child loves a true friend? John tells us that in that love God is present. That night when I was six I may have lost a friend, but I think I found God. Idea for response Search out an old friend you have not seen for many years and contact the person to see how he or she is doing. Take me to reflect Who are three people I need to love more? How can God assist me in becoming more gracious and open to them?

getting to heaven JoEllen Bentson Have you ever wondered what happens when you die? I think all of us have. I, along with 60 other members of our parish, recently aend the 4 part series talk led by Father Gill entled “The Four Last Things – What Hap-pens When You Die?” I am glad I did and I now have a beer understanding of what is to come (Heaven) and what the alternave (Hell) might be like. Of course we all want to go to Heaven, but there are no guarantees that we will. I’ve always considered myself to be a good person and didn’t think I’d have a problem geng to Heaven, but it’s not enough that generally, compared to a lot of other people, I am a good person. It maers what God thinks. I now realize that when I die, there will be a “judgement” and God will give us opportunies every day to grow in grace, to do the right thing, to be a beer person, but most importantly, to be obedient to Him, which will help each of us get one step closer to Heaven. The purpose of our creaon is to be with God in Heav-en. If we reach this goal, we will find eternal happiness. I learned a great deal these past 4 weeks, or maybe I knew a lot of what was said, but needed to hear it again. My faith is strong, but every now and then I do have doubts, and I’m sure I’m not alone. In short, the most important thing I took away from this talk was that our desny (Heaven or Hell) is in our own hands, in our own daily choices and habits. I know God is with me and that I will try to make the choices every day that will get me one step closer to Heaven.
how soon after birth should catholics baptize their infant? According to Cannon 867 of the Code of Cannon Law, “Parents are obliged to see that their infants are bapzed within the first few weeks. As soon as possible aer the birth, indeed even before it, they are to approach the parish priest to ask for the sacrament for their child, and to be themselves duly prepared for it.” The Church teaches that bapsm is necessary for salvaon. Canon 867 says that if the child is in danger of death he must be bapzed immediately. Parents need to bapze their child as soon as possible. It possibly is the earliest and biggest responsibility parents of newborns have for their child. The Catechism of the Catholic Church includes a statement regarding infants who die without bapsm: “As regards children who have died without Bapsm, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus’ tenderness toward children which caused him to say: ‘Let the children come to me, do not hinder them,’ allow us to hope that there is a way of salvaon for children who have died with-out Bapsm. All the more urgent is the Church’s call not to prevent lile children coming to Christ through the gi of holy Bapsm” (No. 1261). It is difficult to imagine a legimate reason why Catholic parents, who truly believe in their faith, would fail to arrange for their children to be bapzed as soon as possible. Our parish requires a bapsm class, the parents and God parents should go through their bapze classes before their baby is born. This will insure minimal wait before their baby is bapzed.
