Broadway to highway: as the Great White Way recovers, top dance talent

takes to the roadUndoubtedly, a musical theaterdancer's ultimate dream is to perform on Broadway. Gigs in regional theaters, on tours, and off-Broadway are common along the way, but most aspiring triple threats want to spend their time on the Great White Way. Shows with creative choreographers, astronomical production values, visibility, and prestige are just some of the reasons dancers want to make it in midtown Manhattan. But as the recession took its toll last year, Broadway suffered a serious slow-down. In January 2009 alone, nine Broadway musicals closed, including longstanding hits like Hairspray. Anticipated productions like Brigadoon never even made it off the ground. Less musicals on the boards means less NYC jobs for dancers, and even Broadway veterans have found themselves unemployed in their home state. Now, though, Broadway is slowly starting to rebound. Many dancers are working on national tours of musicals, moving back and forth between New York and non--New York gigs. At press time, 24 Actors' Equity (the union for Broadway productions) companies were on tour, accompanied by a gaggle of jobs for dancers.Though to some, going from Broadway to a tour may seem like a step backward, most Broadway veterans simply consider work work. For sure, the recession has reinforced this shift, as performers used to getting continual work in NYC look elsewhere for income. Troy Edward Bowles, from Broadway's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Pirate Queen, is now the dance captain on the national tour of Mary Poppins. "With less jobs available on Broadway," he says, "people who wouldn't necessarily choose to go back out on tour are taking jobs on the road--of course only with full production contracts, which is the same pay as Broadway."However, with economic benefits and lead roles up for the taking, going back on the road is becoming more than a saving grace for some performers--it's a

fulfilling gig.

Overview

Soccer is a sport that is passionately followed by millions, if not billions, of fans around the globe. In recent years, the game has leaped to prominence outside of the U.S. by becoming a multimillion-dollar business. Investors all over the world are now seeking an involvement within soccer and although the increased expenditure has threatened the existence of many club's the game itself has become a riveting affair.

Soccer RulesSoccer is usually played on a field around 115 yards in length by 75 yards in width. At either end are two goals posts which are accompanied by an 18 yard box that is mainly used for the use of penalty kicks, which when awarded are taken from 12 yards, in the middle of the box, and on the penalty spot. Penalty kicks are awarded for foul play by either the referee or his two assistants who patrol on opposite sides of the field with a flag whilst monitoring half of the turf each. The assistant referees can also award offsides for the attacking team and although the concept has become more of gray area in the contemporary game the fundamental concept insists that if an attacker is beyond all opposing defenders when the ball is played he is offside.

Game PlayEach team consists of 11 players and their aim is to score the most goals to win them the soccer match. If either team fails to score, or manage to score the same amount of goals then the game will end in a draw. However, in certain cases (usually Cup competitions), when teams are still level after 90 minutes, matches are carried into two 15 minute halves of extra time to find a winner. And, if this fails to suffice, the game will move to penalties until a winner is eventually distinguished.

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, (born 5 February 1985),[2] commonly known as Cristiano Ronaldo, is a Portuguese footballer who plays as a winger or a forward for Spanish club Real Madrid and serves as captain of the Portuguese national team. Ronaldo currently holds the distinction of being the most expensive player in football history after being transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid in a transfer

Ronaldo currently holds the distinction of being the most expensive player in football history after being transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid in a transfer deal worth £80 million (€94m, US$132m). In addition, his contract with Real Madrid, in which he is to be paid £11 million per year over the following six years, makes him the highest paid football player in the world.[3]

Ronaldo began his career as a youth player for Andorinha, where he played for two years, then moved to Nacional. In 1997, he made a move to Portuguese giants Sporting CP. Ronaldo's precocious talent caught the attention of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and he signed the 18-year-old for £12.24 million in 2003. The following season, Ronaldo won his first club honour, the FA Cup, and reached the Euro 2004 final with Portugal, in which tournament he scored his first international goal.In 2008, Ronaldo won the Champions League with United, and was named player of the tournament. He was named the FIFPro World Player of the Year[4] and the FIFA World Player of the Year, in addition to becoming Manchester United's first Ballon d'Or winner in 40 years.[5] Three-time Ballon d'Or winner Johan Cruyff said in an interview on 2 April 2008, "Ronaldo is better than George Best and Denis Law, who were two brilliant and great players in the history of United.

Lionel Andrés Messi (Spanish)

pronunciation: born 24 June 1987) is an Argentine footballer who currently plays for FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team. Considered one of the best football players of his generation and frequently cited as the world's best contemporary player, Messi received several Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21 and won both by the age of 22. His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi his "successor".

Messi began playing football at a young age and his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona. He left Rosario-based Newell's Old Boys's youth team in 2000 and moved with his family to Europe, as Barcelona offered treatment for his growth hormone deficiency. Making his debut in the 2004–05 season, he broke his team record for the youngest footballer to score a league goal. Major honours soon followed as Barcelona won La Liga in Messi's debut season, and won a double of the league and Champions League in 2006. His breakthrough season was in the 2006–07 season; he became a first team regular, scoring a hat-trick in El Clásico and finishing with 14 goals in 26 league games. Perhaps his most successful season was the 2008–09 season, in which Messi scored 38 goals to play an integral part in a treble-winning campaign. In the following 2009–

10 campaign, Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions, equalling Ronaldo's record total for Barcelona.

Messi was the top scorer of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship with six goals, including two in the final game. Shortly thereafter, he became an established member of Argentina's senior international team. In 2006, he became the youngest Argentine to play in the FIFA World Cup and he won a runners-up medal at the Copa América tournament the following year. In 2008, in Beijing, he won his first international honour, an Olympic gold medal, with the Argentina Olympic football team.

Dominique Dawes, Kristen Maloney, Amy Chow, Jamie Dantzscher, Elise Ray and Tasha Schwikert found out they were Olympic bronze medalists Wednesday. The award is 10 years late and bittersweet for the members of the U.S. women's 2000 Olympic gymnastics team that finished fourth overall and left Sydney, Australia, without a single medal — team or individual. On Wednesday, China was stripped of its team bronze by the International Olympic Committee because of evidence presented to the IOC that one Chinese gymnast, Dong Fangxiao, was only 14 at the time. Age requirements stipulate that a gymnast must turn 16 the year of the Olympics.Similar controversy surrounded the 2008 Chinese female gymnasts, even before they won team gold ahead of the U.S. silver medalists. Based mostly on Chinese state documents, reports on the Internet suggested at least three of the competitors on that team, including uneven bars star He Kexin, were underage. Officials of FIG, the international gymnastics federation, said the information available did not constitute any proof of violations.Maloney, who is now a preschool teacher in New York and who competed for UCLA after the 2000 Games, said her feelings about receiving a delayed medal were still muddled."It just still feels unreal," Maloney said. "I feel sad for the Chinese that they felt like they needed to cheat. It's just sad for them. It was such a long time ago for me that I don't know how I feel yet."Schwikert, who also went to UCLA after those Olympics, said she'll like giving a different answer to the question, "Did you win a medal? I've always said, ‘No, we got fourth.' Now it will be nice to say, ‘We got bronze.' We worked hard for that. I do believe we earned it."As Maloney said, the experience of 2000 wasn't joyful for most of the women. After lackluster international results in 1999, USA Gymnastics reacted by putting Bela Karolyi in overall command of the team and requiring the top competitors and their individual coaches to report periodically to his Houston-area ranch. The turmoil among individual coaches and Karolyi caused tension, Maloney and Schwikert both noted. At the end of the 2000 Games, Maloney, Dantzscher and Ray called their Olympic experiences "disappointing," especially with the lack of medals.

The Competition: Gold, Silver, and Bronze

Olympic competition consists of: Preliminaries: All individual athletes and teams compete. The scores from this one competition determine who qualifies to team finals, all-around finals and individual event finals. Those trying to qualify as a team put up five athletes on each event, and four of those scores count. There are six total athletes on each team. Teams that score in the top eight qualify to team finals. Also during preliminaries, the top 24 athletes in the all-around (the total of all six events) qualify to all-around finals. No more than two gymnasts from each country may qualify, however. This leaves athletes on strong teams such as China and Japan competing with their own teammates in preliminaries in an effort to become the number one or two all-arounder on the team. Finally, the top eight scorers on every apparatus during preliminaries qualify to the individual event finals. Again, only two gymnasts are allowed per team. Team Finals: Team finals are the next competition following preliminaries. Though the scores from preliminaries are erased at this point, the teams are seeded. The top two teams compete in the same rotation; ranks three and four compete together; and so on. The top two teams get to compete in the Olympic order of events (floor, pommels, rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar), generally considered the ideal progression to compete. Each team puts up three of their six athletes on every event, and every score counts. Since only the scores from this final round are used when deciding the team medals, this meet is a real pressure-cooker. Even a low score is counted in the final result, and can take a team completely out of the medals. Individual All-Around Finals: The all-around final competition comes after team finals. Each of the 24 qualifiers from preliminaries competes on all six events. Though the scores from preliminaries are wiped clean, the athletes are again seeded. The top six compete together in one group; slots 7-12 compete in another group; and so forth. Like team finals, the top group has the advantage of competing in the Olympic order. Individual Event Finals: Finally, an event champion is named on each apparatus. The top eight scorers from preliminaries all compete that one event, and the top score of that day gets the gold. (Again, no scores are carried over from preliminaries). There is no seeding in event finals. The order in which the athletes compete is a random draw.
