HOME OF THE SKYHAWKS NOVEMBER 2016
Hello Skyhawk Families,
Welcome to November! Hard to believe I am saying that already, but here it is. I can’t start this month without thanking you all for your generous support of our “Drive for 20” fundraising campaign. One of the best parts of be-ing a Skyridge student is the ability to participate in one or more of our extracurricular activities. With your support of this drive, we will continue to be able to offer these opportunities to our students.
Speaking of extracurricular activities, we have kicked off our second sporting season of the school year. Our 8th grade football team ended fall as the league champions and our girls cross country team had a very successful sea-son as well, culminating in a fun race through the rain at the district meet and a solid 3rd place finish. Great job to all of our fall sports participants. The very next week we began our first winter sports season with both wrestling and 7th/8th grade volleyball getting underway. The kids are practicing hard and preparing for their season. We also have our Science Olympiad team meeting every Wednesday as well, so there are plenty of involvement opportunities for our students.
As a staff, we are continuing to build our knowledge of the growth mindset and the adolescent brain. Our teachers completed an activity during our October late starts around connecting kids to school. The extracurricular activities that I mentioned before are one way to do this, but we are also working on ways to build community within our classrooms so that students know that they are in a safe place to make mistakes and learn from them. This is some-thing that can carry over into the home. Especially with middle school students, the answer to “How was school to-day?” is often “Fine”. Try changing up the question. With my own daughters, we have begun to occasionally ask them “What mistake did you learn from today?” It not only gets away from the “Fine” answer, but allows them to see that mistakes can be a great learning experience.
This leads me back to something that I talked about last month. I would like to open up the option for parents to participate in a book study around the adolescent brain and what growth mindset looks like for adolescents. We would meet 3-4 times as a group to discuss the reading and look at some other sources of in-formation. We know that the best way to meet the needs of our kids is to work as a partner-ship with parents, so we hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity. The book is titled Brainstorm, The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain by Daniel Seigel. To sign up, please click here. As always, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Go Skyhawks!
Clint Williams, Principal
With your support, our Skyhawk Drive for 20 raised nearly $18,250 to support
over 20 ASB events and programs. This was an amazing experience for our stu-
dents and our staff and we really can’t thank you enough. Students feasted on
free popcorn during lunch on Wednesday, October 26 and will enjoy an outdoor
BBQ lunch in the spring when things dry out.

All items in the Lost and Found will be donated to charity over the Thanksgiving break. Think you’re missing items, check the lost and found located in the Mt. Rainier hallway outside the Library Media Center.
The Rainy Season Cometh
The rain has returned. Please be sure your stu-dent dresses for the weather on the way to and from school. In the event a jacket or sweatshirt is left behind at school; the Lost and Found can be located outside the LMC in the Mt. Rainier hall-way.
Staying warm and dry will help your student stay healthy as well. Cold and flu viruses can spread rap-idly in classrooms. Please review the Guidelines for Keeping Ill Chil-dren Home from School to prevent
the spread of these viruses. These guidelines can be found on the district website under the Parent Corner/Forms. Thank you.
