A MESSAGE FROM THE M ANAGING DIRECTOR-A MY S . JENSEN

Welcome to Skylight Opera Theatre’s production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris which has been generously sponsored by Frontier Airlines. We are delighted that Associate Artistic Director Ray Jivoff is making his Skylight directorial debut with this production.

I am also pleased to announce that Artistic Director Bill Theisen has agreed to extend his tenure with Skylight for an additional two years, through the 2012-2013 season. Bill has been the spark

behind so many wonderful productions here at Skylight since he joined the staff as Artistic Director in 2004 and is already hard at work with exciting plans for his final two seasons. I am delighted that Bill will be a part of the search committee that will soon be formed to begin the task of identifying his successor.

Thank you to our donors who have already made a gift to support our 2010-2011 Annual Campaign. A special thank you to our donors who created a special $150,000 Challenge Fund to match all new gifts as well as the additional portion of any increased gifts. We are already more than halfway to reaching that challenge, but we need your help to reach our final goal. I was honored to speak with several donors in December who so enjoyed seeing our production of H.M.S. Pinafore that they were moved to send Skylight an additional donation.

We are busily putting the final touches on our plans for an exciting 2011-2012 season of productions, most of which Skylight has never performed before. If you are currently a subscriber, thank you for knowing that every production in a Skylight season provides an entertaining and high quality experience, whether it is a familiar chestnut or something completely new. If you haven’t subscribed or are new to Skylight, please consider subscribing this year. A Skylight season offers something for everyone across the full-spectrum of music theatre.

A MESSAGE FROM THE D IRECTOR-R AY J IVOFF

Born in Brussels in 1929, Jacques Brel’s adolescence was spent under Nazi-occupation. After moving to Paris in 1952, he became a world-renowned songwriter and performer. The balance between passion and reason, humor and tragedy and a respect for ordinary people became the hallmarks of his work. Brel’s songs about family, love, loss, life, death and social injustice often build to a defiant and explosive conclusion with what came to be known as the “Brelian crescendo.” He elevated the popular song to an art form of universal relevance.

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris is a song cycle of Brel’s music, translated by Mort Shuman and Eric Blau and first performed Off-Broadway in 1968. It is our hope that the sequence of his songs presented on the Cabot stage will tell a story of a life experience common to all of us.

I’m thrilled to be directing my first show at Skylight! I am deeply grateful to have Richard Carsey as my musical partner. It just seems right, since Richard and I met and became instant friends on the first day of rehearsal of our first Skylight show, Girl Crazy in 1990. Richard’s supreme musicianship, passion, intelligence and wit have made this process a joy. I also want to thank the cast, who bring such humor, intelligence and heart to the rehearsal process. I love to collaborate and I thank the cast, as co-choreographers.

Finally, I want to thank Skylight’s staff, led by Bill Theisen and Amy Jensen, for all their support, deep commitment and great artistry.
