LETTERS FROM THE PRESIDENT & BOARD CHAIRDear Graduating Class of 2020:

Congratulations on finishing what you started! When you began your studies at Sussex County Community College, you probably had a goal in mind. For some of you the initial goal may have been to complete your associate’s degree. For others of you, your goal may have changed along the way, and the new goal of graduating from SCCC emerged while studying here with us. Regardless of your goal or your path, the end point has been a tremendous accomplishment. Only you know what it took to get you here to graduation; only you understand the sacrifices involved. Now, what will happen next? These are unprecedented times filled with uncertainty. The path ahead of you is even more open-ended than usual for college graduates. During times like this, it is important to remember that there are no longer the old limits to what can happen next. If someone were to ask you if you wanted to try an opportunity that broke through old limitations, would that not sound like something worth trying? What does it take to capture such an opportunity? It takes courage and confidence. The future will belong to those who reach through the troubles to see the opportunity that is hidden in confusion of the moment. Old ways of thinking will yield to new ways. You can be a part of the new way – make the new way your way. I encourage you to set a path bravely, and taking what you have learned here at Sussex County Community College with you. Stay safe out there.

Dear Graduates,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to congratulate you on the successful completion of your educational journey with Sussex County Community College. Certainly, this has been a most unusual year filled with the challenges of remote learning, lack of club activities, absence of sports and, of course, missing the interactions with your classmates and professors.

The Board of Trustees is proud of your accomplishments and thank you for your perseverance, understanding and dedication to the completion of your education. However, your educational journey has just commenced and we hope that we have provided you with a pathway of learning, achieving and succeeding in the years ahead.

Nelson Mandela stated: “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world.”

A Letter to the Graduating Class of 2020:

As I sit down to write this letter, what I had originally planned to write doesn’t really make much sense now given the current situation. I had a whole plan to give the graduating class sound advice about securing a career in their chosen fields. I would have told you that it was important to create a really comprehensive resume and to get your LinkedIn page up and running. I would have told you that it was important for you to try to land an internship when you transferred to a four-year school because the sooner you get into the workforce, in whatever capacity, and gain experience the better off you would be once you graduated. I would have told you that networking is important to further yourself in your field so you should say yes to everything because you might make a connection that could matter down the line.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I think these are all solid pieces of advice and they, in fact, may help you land that dream job one day. But having this time to reflect and spend time with my family I realize that the best piece of advice I can give you is this: do what you love.

Over the past 8 weeks, we have all been inundated with the demands of work and family. Many have felt the incredible stress of not knowing what the future will bring. We have all felt sad, depressed, nervous, anxious and yet even during this time, there have been moments of happiness. I know that I have been completely overwhelmed with life in a way that I have never thought possible but the times that I have felt the happiest is when I was doing something that I love.

I really do think work is important. It’s gives us value, self-worth, and a feeling of contributing to society. I am actually one of the lucky ones that actually loves his work but I also love things outside of my work. For me, the thing I love the most is gardening. There is something magical about taking a tiny seed, putting it in the soil, and watching it grow to eventually produce something delicious. I can tell you that there is no better feeling than eating the food that you grew. If you’ve ever had a funky variety of a home-grown heirloom tomato, you know I’m right.

I think work is important because it provides us the ability to pursue these things that we love, but with the uncertainty of the pandemic circling, I think now could be a great time to hunker down and take stock of the things you really love to pursue. So, what do you love to do? Is it playing video games? Is it fishing? Hunting? Is it binge watching The Office? Whatever it is, do that thing. And if you don’t know what you love to do, find out. Now is the time to experiment, to fiddle, to tinker, to play. You are graduating and entering a world that is unprecedented, so why not bring a little comfort with you? I can’t remember a time in my life when self-care has ever been more important so my advice is to find something you love and do the hell out of it.
