SKY BUS -A Paradigm shift in Urban Transportation

INTRODUCTION
The sky bus technology offered by Konkan railway
corporation . It redefine the thinking and planning for
urban transport being a eco-friendly.
It is the patented technology developed for new
millennium and will cause a paradigm shift in urban
transportation all over the world. .
SKY BUS “A unique mass transit system which than can be put
up within any two years in any crowded and
congested city for safe transportation without loss
of time.”
Why sky bus is safe
The present Railway Technology used in metros- defect of
derailment.
Sky Bus- eliminating the problems of existing metro rail
systems like derailments, collisions, capsizing and crushing
people.
Compared to conventional railway systems, the centre of
gravity of the mass being carried on the wheels is brought
down to be closer to the wheel support. Hence dynamic safety
is many times improved.

Working Principle of Sky Bus

•As long as the wheels are on the rails, the coach runs.
•But failure of rails / obstruction by a heavy wind force may create dangerous situations.
When the wheels climb 25 to 30 mm flange, then derailment occurs.

If derailment occurs, then there is nothing to hold the coach, then the coach just topples.
Such falling of coach can kill people inside the coach and also people on the road, if any.
Evolution Of Sky Bus Technology
Suppose a standard railway coach running on a railway track…
The under frame with standard railway wheel – set running on a railway track…
Structural Link• There are two possible ways of doing this:
The First Concept, The Load Can Be Transferred From The Platform By A Tensile Member, the load can be transmitted by a portal frame.
The Second Concept Allows For More Freedom In Configurations But Is Less Efficient As It Results In High Bending Moments.
. The Sky Bus Coach Was Designed For Various Specified Loads Including This Condition And Analyzed Using The Finite-element Method (Fem).
Technology Of Sky Bus The median in the middle of road : 9.4 m wide,2.4 m high
The typical structural configuration : 1m dia concrete columns,
9m tall,
spaced 10-15m apart supporting a continuous box structure about 9m wide,
cantilevering equally on both sides of the columns.
Sky way It consists of a concrete box structure 8.4*2.4m.
Carried over a series of piers at height of 9-10m above the
road level.
In middle roadway it supports by pile foundation about 1m
depth. There are no points and crossings.
Advantages Of Sky Bus Over Other
Modes: Performance
Safety
Land & Protection to existing buildings
Capital and running costs
Construction
Charges
Financial viability
Why Sky Bus saves 50% to 75% in costs
Conventional railway provides for heavy steel coaches to protect people from derailments and capsizing. So carry more steel and dead weight instead of people.
The capital cost per km is Rs. 50 crores.
The energy in Sky Bus, is used to carry more people than in Metro Rails, which carries more dead loads.
Proposals For Establishing Sky Bus
The authorities in Mumbai are sufficiently taken up with the idea to consider setting up a sky bus system on a 9.8 km stretch between Adhere and Ghatkopar.
To the Tamil Nadu Government, has presented a possible route network between Muthialpet in North Chennai to Tippet in the west — via Koyambedu — and Mahabalipuram 45 km South of the city. Konkani railway corporation would soon begin work on construction of a 1.6 km running track of Sky bus in Goa.
Conclusion This research confirms that the advantages of sky bus
technology are tremendous. For overpopulated Indian urban
areas, sky bus seems to be the best solution for safe, quality,
and inexpensive mass public transportation.
Indian state governments and metro city corporations are
waiting for final approval from experts. If sky bus project
receives approval by experts for its track tests, sky bus will
become the solution for urban public transportation in
21st century, at least for India.
