Reach out and touch is pet therapy for the lonely

The touch of soft whiskers against a cheek. A whisper of greeting to a new friend. The smile grows.

A popular and successful therapy, the introduction of small pets to hospital patients and convalescents has proven to be a valuable recovery tool. Persons suffering from high blood pressure ailments and depression have shown marked improvement when given a pet to care for.

Sigmas in the Trenton-Delaware Valley alumnae chapter have witnessed such a program firsthand at the Donelly Memorial hospital, a county home for the aging in Trenton, New Jersey. For years these Sigmas have visited and offered extras not found in the budget. This year, they contributed to the pet therapy program.

Small animals now make the

geriatric center their part-time home. The program's director, Steve Mellion, said the pets can help bring a patient out of a depression, not an unusual state for someone who has left his home and family. Animals don't distinguish between physically and mentally handicapped persons, but seek affection.

Mr. Mellion began the program with goldfish and soon included hamsters, guinea pigs, several cats and a dog as benefits of the program soon outweighed the problems.

In the day room at Donelly, residents and the activities director, Dwight Roche, encouraged Fred the dog to demonstrate to the Sigmas his recently learned behavior from obedience school. Fred had become spoiled from the abundance of love given him, so the Sigma Kappas donated funds for Fred's tuition to obedience school.

Mr. Roche told the Sigmas that the pet therapy program was the only one of its kind in that area and the largest on the east coast. He said, "The attitude here has really picked up-for the staff, too. It 's a more pleasant place to come to. It's become more of a home than an institution." -Information provided by Ann Reitzel

Catalano, H, chapter president and advisor to rz-Northern Illinois, gave a review of the convention activities and decisions.

The October meeting at Kathy Catalano's home featured Jane Kelly, a representative of the local chapter for Alzheimer's disease as speaker.

Several members attended the Founders ' Day luncheon at Long Grove village, hostessed by the Chicago area suburban chapters. In November we also enjoyed an evening of bingo with residents of Roosevelt Square retirement home and made fall and Christmas decorations for their dining room tables.

At our traditional Christmas party at Lillian Carter List 's, AT, home we exchanged cookies and ornaments and brought staple foods for the Pantry, a Rockford emergency food distribution agency. Kathy Evans Zant, t.t. , our treasurer, moved to Michigan in November so Linda Taylor Wyatt, rK, again assumed those duties.

Marcia Trost Aramovich, rM, and husband Mike hosted the January Soup Supper and Game Night for members, husbands and dates. Following the meal of homemade soups and breads, the twelve couples divided into teams with the Violets versus the Weeds for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. This was also the kick-off night for our annual fundraiser, a raffi.e with the opportunity to win a day of minimaid service, or an equal value of another service such as drapery or carpet cleaning.

An evening social featuring a fashion show was held at Roosevelt Square in February with Sigmas modeling apparel worn for their daily activities and sports interests. Sue Bartlett Armstrong, rM, provided piano background for the show and refreshments were served to the residents. A business meeting was held afterward at the home of Jan Bauer Dunbar, rz. When the winning ticket for the raffi.e was drawn, as Jan had sold the most tickets, she was awarded a prize equal to the value of her sales by Sue Armstrong, raffle chairman. The recipes for the soups and breads served at the January supper were copied and the sets were sold at this meeting.

As an ongoing fundraiser we continued to auction the secret contents of the Goody Basket at every meeting, the buyer filling it for bidding at the next meeting. As husbands like to bid on this basket, it is especially popular at our couples ' activities. Jim Wyatt, Linda's husband, was the buyer in January and the lucky purchaser in February got a loaf of homemade bread baked by Linda and a waterfowl wood carving made by Jim.

Diane Snodgrass Conklin, e, was presented with a Junior League of Rockford youth service award in January. Develop· er of the Families in Action program, she was named the outstanding support serv-

At our annual spring dinner we elected and installed new officers and in early summer had a gathering for area collegians home from school.

This year has been our best for fundraising. Two paper drives made money for our convention delegate fund with a minimum of work. Besides Current stationery, we also sold entertainment coupon books for local restaurants and theaters. Our holiday bazaar completely funded our Christmas gerontology project.

Valentines Day was the theme for our quarterly meeting at the home of Diane Rademacher with Sigma trivia, songs and laughter highlighting the evening.

A TGIF noontime luncheon in March gave everyone a break in our regular lunch routines at Montana's restaurant downtown and many Sigmas attended the panhellenic fashion show at the Botanical Center to meet with college-bound high school seniors. •

Our April quarterly meeting was a spring salad luncheon at Fran Turman Throckmorton 's, A, home with each of us bringing a favorite salad.

IOWA/ILLINOIS-Our summer picnic brought out some new members, lots of children and husbands, and collegians from AE-Iowa State and AZ- Iowa. We enjoyed volleyball competition.

Helping AZ-Iowa with fall rush reminded us again how smiling uses all the face muscles.

To share our talents and prepare for the holidays, our president, Lynn Prosser, t.E, led a Christmas crafts-making session and we held a dinner dance with gift ex-

Sharon Sullivan Daugherty, BZ, produced and directed "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" at her church in Kensington.

Lynn Trimmer held a slide presentation on poison prevention at our February meeting. Because of the increased interest in CPR, classes were arranged for a future date.

Our scholarship loan for the collegians was reinstated, enabling us to assist one or two upperclassmen each semester and Kathryn Tuttle, ZA, investigated the legal ramifications.

Kendra Buckel Wells, BZ, suggested and Kerry Buckel Greer, BZ, spearheaded a joint endeavor with the collegiate chapter to surprise and honor housemother Mrs. Pauline K. Berube on her lOth year with Sigma Kappa. Collegians provided the entertainment while alumnae brought culinary delights.

The Color Me Beautiful shows have been popular with a consultant assisting the participants in their cosmetology and choosing flattering colors while giving the chapter a percentage of the merchandise purchased. Our flea market stand at a local community parking lot was probably the easiest way to clean out our closets.

Members, husbands and friends enjoyed matching wits and intellect at a Trivial Pursuit party hostessed by Mary K. Dent, BZ. Winners had to bring a new member to the next meeting while losers had to think of ideas for new fundraisers.

As part of Xi's continuing work in gerontology, the chapter participates in a birthday party held at a local rest home each month.

Members are also very excited about the new house plans which will go into effect over the summer.-MARY COFFEY

LAFAYETTE ZETA RHO-Zeta Rho ·began the sec

LOCK HAVEN DELTA PA-Our biggest event of the

semester was the 25th anniversary of Delta Pi at LHU. Our celebration was held on homecoming weekend in October. With special thanks to Leslie Radcliffe, the weekend was a success. Approximately 35 Delta Pi alumnae returned for the anniversary of the chapter. We started with a get together at the house and slide show. Saturday morning began with the homecorning parade, followed by a tail-gate cookout before the football game. There was a dinner banquet that evening. During the half time festivities, Sigma Kappa was awarded two trophies. We won first place for best all-around float and best Greek float. Our float was titled It's a Small World and members were dressed in costumes representing the countries of Ireland, Japan, Africa, Mexico, Holland and Scotland. Of course, Minnie and Mickey Mouse were present, too. Our chapter also received a plaque from panhellenic for having the highest overall sorority gpa on campus. Sunday morning brought a formal meeting followed by a brunch at the house.

We sponsored the second annual Mr. LHU contest for the students of Lock Haven. There were seven contestants who competed in talent, swim suit and formal dress competitions in front of 200 fans .

Joy Anderson, Laura Feaga and Wanda Yearick were among 10 students selected to study in Nottingham, England during the fall semester. Already accepted for the Poland exchange program in the spring are Lynn Howard and Ann Marnien. Nora O'Sullivan will also be student teaching in London the second half of the spring semester.

MAINE EPSILON NU-Epsilon Nu started the

fall semester with a tea sponsored by the Greater Bangor Area alumnae club to get us psyched for formal rush. We took three pledges in the rush. In October we carved pumpkins and delivered them to the fraternities on campus. We had successful lollipop campaign in November, which we kicked off with a spaghetti dinner for Founders ' Day.

December brought us a visit from TC Marlene Reuther. We visited the Marsh Island apartments for the elderly at Christmas where we sang carols and provided apple cider for the residents. We also visited the Maine Sea Coast Mission with some goodies for next year's Christmas packages and took a tour of the facilities. Our own secret Sigmas wound up with a party in the chapter room.

In January we had a program on parliamentary procedure which was very helpful to the new officers. For Valentine's Day we sold balloon bouquets. We swept Winter Carnival and were awarded the overall title.

The rest of the semester 's activities included selling April Fools jokes, raffling off an Easter basket, a baby shower for our advisor, Claire Lint, and our traditional senior farewell banquet for our graduating seniors.-CATHY DEARBORN

MICHIGAN ALPHA MU-After many months of

planning and work by local alumnae and national officers, Alpha Mu was reinstalled this winter. Eighty-four new members were initiated.

Shortly after initiation the new members gained valuable and much needed experience with rush in informal winter rush. Thirteen pledges were added.

In January Alpha Mu placed second in ~XA's Winterfest. The intramural basketball team was impressive on the court with a final record of 4-1.

Alpha Mu recently adopted its local philantrophy. Members will be working with the Ann Arbor Senior Citizens Guild which serves as a liasion between area nursing homes. Sigma Kappa also took part in MTV's campus battle against Multiple Sclerosis by sponsoring the Miracle Mile of Quarters at a local shopping mall. In addition, we adopted a grandparent program.

In February the Alpha Mu corporation board announced that housing for 60 members would be available next fall. This news was met with great enthusiasm for with the acquisition of a home, we have at long last become a "real" sorority. Special thanks to all of our alumnae who made this possible. - KELLE JACOBS

N. ILLINOIS GAMMA ZETA-Beginning with the

addition of 23 pledges in September, we

participated in homecoming with IIKA. Then carne EX Derby Days where we captured third place.

Many Beta Sigmas traveled to Atlanta to watch the Boilermakers play in the 1984 Peach Bowl and celebrated New Year's in the deep South.

The hayride barndance in November was a smash. The third annual Sigma Kappa Crush dance and the Beta Sigma pledge dance, the Pearl, which was held in the spring, were also successes.

Beta Sigma hosted Dr. Gene Swackharnmer, a Purdue alumnus, for the Old Master program. The chapter also assisted ci>EK in recolonization efforts.

Linda Hartman was selected as president of panhellenic. Betsy Liley was

named editor in chief of the Purdue Exponent, while Terri Kuchak was made a Grand Prix girL-BETSY LILLEY

RHODE ISLAND PHI-Fall semester began with the ini

tiation of the 11 spring pledges. Shortly after, rush was held and 10 new members were pledged.

Phi was named Sorority of the Semester for the forth consecutive semester. The award, given by panhellenic, honors the sorority with the most academic, athletic, extra-curricular activities and philanthropies. Sigma Kappa is the only sorority to have won the award more than twice.

Homecoming was held in October. A brunch was held for the alumnae and the theme wps It's a Small World. Christine Donovan was selected runner-up in the homecoming queen competition.

Parents' Day was celebrated with a potluck dinner. A movie on Greek life was shown to help the parents better understand the role a sorority plays in their daughters' lives.

At Christmas, non-perishables, clothing and health and beauty aids were collected and sent to the Maine Sea Coast Mission. TE~ and Sigma Kappa sponsored a Teeter-totter-a-thon with funds raised being donated to Multiple Sclerosis.

Spring rush was very successful. Theme parties included Sigma Slumber Party, Sigma goes to Vegas, and Sigma Soda Shoppe. The 15 pledges make the largest pledge class on campus this spring.CAROLE SQUIZZERO

TEXAS (SAN ANTONIO) ZETA NU-We started this semester

by winning five out of nine first place ribbons in Greek Week. This won us the girls division hands down. At Easter time we visited the Four Seasons Nursing Home. After chocolate Easter eggs, we participated in the March of Dimes 15-mile W alk-a-thon which was appropriately titled Walk-America.

Other activities included exchanges with TKE, .:lXA and Trinity University's Trinitiers.

After a summer of planning for rush and three days of hard work, we got 10 pledges. Then volleyball fever hit and some Sigmas joined the intramural competition. At UTSA's Bestfest we painted palm trees for our Sigma Fruitie sale stand where we sold drinks made up of different fruits and crushed ice.

Dressed in costumes we visited the Four Seasons Nursing Home and handed out homemade cookies. Afterward it was off to the JC's haunted house. The semester ended with a semi-formal Christmas party where big sisters were discovered.

We also had a cops and robbers exchange withAXA.

The spring semester started off with the initiation of eight new members. We joined UTSA in celebrating our first homecoming in February. Kari Forrest was nominated for homecoming queen. Another first being celebrated along with homecoming was panhellenic's first all-sorority reunion where more Sigma Kappas showed up than all the other sororities combined.

In March 11 members made the seven hour road trip to Wichita Falls, Texas for the 1985 Southwest Regional Conference which was attended by fellow Sigma Kappas from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas.-CONNI YouNG

UC (BERKELEY) LAMBDA- We welcomed 40 pledges

this fall . They proved their strength in the ~K'I' 500 relay race where they won first place. Kim Bellichick, Susan Nakamura, Heidi Rosenau, Jenny McKillop and Kathryn Dessayer rallied to bring home the trophy and raise money for the benefit of the Children's Hospital of Oakland.

The Claremont Hotel is the site for our 75th anniversary banquet. Ruth Ann Grieg receives her 75th anniversary pin and the chapter expects 300 guests and several national officers to turn out for the festivities . For the Regional Conference, eight ot us trave1eo to l"'alm Springs. We won the award for the chapter to travel the farthest. Our alumnae won the award for best newsletter. We celebrated Father-Daughter Day with a tail-gate barbeque and lots of fun question and answer games. Spring formal was at the Hyatt in San Francisco and the Violet Ball was the highlight of the social season. For Moms' Day the seniors wore Laura Ashley designs and modeled for the annual fashion show.

Those who contributed most to our chapters' gpa were Erin Kiniken and Kathryn Dessayer who each earned a 4.0 during fall term. The annual trip to Piedmont Gardens for our gerontology philanthropy project went very well and the members sang and danced to cabaret songs. The visit is always a special treat for the Lambdas because Ruth Ann Grieg and six other alumnae are part of the audience.-ANNE BORNSTEIN

WASHINGTON MU- We began winter quarter with the

initiation of 46 new members . Sara Doughtery and Gina Kavesh organized the activities for Inspiration Week.

Our Beaux and Arrows dance, planned by Kim Player and Lyne Zeumer, followed initiation. On March 5, Mu presented the bridal and formal wear fashion show on campus. Assembled by Eleanor Lighthall, the show featured three of our members as models: Robin Earl, Shaun Elmer and Julia Snyer. The TKE inter-sorority

twister competition was held March 7. Mu landed the trophy for house participation for having the largest group of twisters complete.

Several of our members, including Debbie Bush, Beth Finlon, Debbie Hudgins and Beth Janny, have returned from studying abroad. Our other students include our athletes. Evelyn Buermann is a singles tennis player and Cat Clark is a four-year veteran of UW's swim team. Cyndi Kneip is an oarsman for the Husky crew team while Kim Leidholm is a Husky crew coxswain.

We are thrilled that our 1984-85 chapter president, Ingrid Nixon, will be seen in the upcoming movie Trouble in Mind, a movie being filmed here in Seattle by the writer and director of Choose Me. Ingrid, a broadcast journalism major, submitted a script to the director for a gameshow and newscast to be shown on a television during one of the films' scenes. The director liked the videotape and script and plans to use it in the movie.

Highlights from the rest of the school year included our spring formal in April, our participation in Greek Week and .Derby Days, our spring cruise and several rush workshops.-SARA SzAL

W.KENTUCKY EPSILON ZETA-Last fall began with

formal rush. We picked up 10 pledges. Then it was time for EN Powderpuff football. On October 5, we were all ready for our annual Bunny Bash dance. We also participated in K.:l Washboard in the fall.

Before we knew it, homecoming was upon us, with our annual homecoming tea. On Sunday we had our Founders' Day celebration so some of the alumnae still in town could attend.

November 30 we had a retreat before initiating our fall pledges. We let our fingers do the walking in December during the Phone-o-thon.

Once again it was time to cut loose and "boogie down" at our pledge/active dance December 15. The theme this semester was Playboy Bunny.

Santa Claus visited the chapter early in December at our Christmas party. The party was held at the home of one of our local members.

January 9 marked Epsilon Zeta's 20th year on campus. To celebrate we held an anniversary dinner. Even though bad weather caused our turn-out to be lower than we had expected, we didn't let that dampen our spirits. We found that things haven't changed too much over the years.

Everyone grabbed their sweethearts for the Valentine's dance on February 16. In informal rush this spring we picked up six pledges. Kelli Winkenhoffer represented Sigma Kappa in the EX Derby Darling beauty contest.

We are presently working on a hunk calendar for next fall. This is our philanthroPY money-raising project. We had a formal on March 30 and Greek Week in April.-BETH EATON

Thank you, Sigma Kappas . . .

Looking back . • . to the future "Our yesterdays follow us;

they constitute our life, and they give character and force and meaning to our present deeds. "

We each recall Sigma Kappa experiences from a perspective of personally "having been there. '' Those valued times helped build and shape our sorority 's rich heritage, and thus point the way toward our tomorrow.

Strengthening that heritage is important, too. And that requires looking forward.

Sigma Kappa is blessed. Alumnae are looking forward! But then, they always have. Even from its earliest beginnings on the Colby College campus more than 100 years ago, the spirit of our sorority has never lacked for energy, direction, and the intangible bond that to this very day continues to thread its way through all our achievements, all we accomplish. The strength of that bond may be more evident just now than ever before!

Over these many years and miles-from Waterville to West Lafayette, Tallahassee to Tucson, Denver to DeKalb, Natchitoches to New Wilmington, Springfield to San Diego-alumnae support and participation have made a difference for Sigma Kappa. In more recent times, our tradition of caring and sharing has been especially visible in our annual Loyalty Fund.

Loyalty Fund dollars help provide funds available from no other source, making resources immediately available for programs emphasizing academic excellence and per-

22

sonal development, expansion and recolonization, and improved sorority communications and publications.

Collegiate fees simply can no longer bear the entire burden of operating a sorority like ours whose goals for excellence are so universally applauded. One thing is very certain: Sigma Kappa hasn't been around for all these years without support from natural resources. Our alumnae are just that "natural resource. " The Loyalty Fund provides a wonderful opportunity for each of us to strengthen our long-standing heritage, while also clearing a path toward a productive and opportunityladen future.

Strengthening that heritage is important, too. And that requires looking forward.

Sigma Kappa's reasons for needing alumnae support have changed with each passing generation. But the value of that support never changes! Today-with Loyalty Fund donors increasing in number and their gifts incre ing · and training seminar , pecial rushing assistance; expansion to previously closed chapters, increases in the number of our traveling consultants, graduate counselor assistance, regional conferences and State Day programs, computerization and expanded materials for Advisory Boards.

Can Loyalty Fund gifts do all that? Yes, providing our alumnae continue their will-

value-we are able to look to fundin leadership ro ams ingness to make sure the Sigma Kappa experience will be always available-not merely a few alumnae giving a lot, but many alumnae giving what they feel they can.

This year, in recognition of those alumnae whose continued support means so much to our sorority, and in anticipation of those who will decide to make their initial gifts to the Loyalty Fund, cumulative giving "clubs" have been established. These special clubs will recognize in future Triangle issues our special alumnae who, through their willingness to give, keep Sigma Kappa strong, important. The cumulative amounts since the inception of our present Loyalty Fund and their respective club designations are: Sisterhood Triangle Cumulative Gifts amounting to $100 Violet Triangle Cumulative Gifts amounting to $250 Pearl Triangle Cumulative Gifts amounting to $500 President's Triangle Cumulative Gifts amounting to $1,000

Loyalty Fund gifts continue to be the essence of our vision, the lifeblood of our plans and the foundation upon which our outstanding young women can receive the benefits of lifelong friendships and strong support for their endeavors.

Alumnae giving makes a difference for the Loyalty Fund! The Loyalty Fund makes a difference for Sigma Kappa!
