1 Preface This manual describes the concept and operation of the Service and Console Processor SKP 3970 as of the hardware basis 3970-4 (PRIMERGY TX300 S3). For simplicity’s sake the name SKP 3970 or SKP is used on the following.

The SKP supports the operation, monitoring, diagnostics and maintenance of BS2000/OSD Business Servers of the S series (/390 architecture). It has a Web interface to do this. The SKP permits a connection to the Service Center.

1.1 Target group

This manual is intended for privileged users (operators, system administrators) who wish to administer their Business Servers via the Service and Console Processor SKP.

Knowledge of BS2000/OSD system operation and administration is required for this purpose.

1.2 Summary of contents

The documentation for the operation of the SKP 3970 consists of this manual and the online help:

● The manual provides an overview of the SKP’s functions and presents these on the basis of examples.

● The online help also contains detailed information on all functions (see also the section “Information function “Help” – Calling the online help” on page 27). The online help is called from the Web interface.

2 The Service/Console Processor SKP 3970The SKP supports operation, monitoring, diagnostics and maintenance of the S servers. It has a Web interface to permit this. For simplicity’s sake the name SKP 3970 or SKP will be used from here on in both the explanatory texts and in the GUI windows.

The components and connections of the SKP 3970 and the S server that are relevant for this manual are shown in figure 1.

Operating system of the SKP 3970

The Service/Console Processor SKP 3970 is a Linux-based system. The Linux-based operating system is visible for the user, for example, when administering passwords or when opening connections.

The SKP’s information function Info (see the section “Information function “Info” – Displaying system information” on page 28) displays the Linux version and software packages of the SKP 3970.

3 Operational concept of the SKP 3970In SKP 3970-4 and higher the following functions are offered via the Web interface:

– Connection to the BS2000 console via the console distribution program (KVP)

– Connection to the Linux VM console (console of a Linux guest system / VM2000) via the console distribution program (KVP)

– Connection to the BS2000 dialog via LOCLAN / EM9750

– Connection to the Service Processor frames (SVP frames) via SVP-LAN / EM9750

– Configuration and administration of the BS2000 devices

– Configuration and administration of the SKP

System access

The connections to KVP, SVP, dialog and the shell access can be called locally, remotely or via Teleservice:

● Local

KVP, SVP, dialog: A terminal applet is opened from the Web interface running on the local console. The functions are called via this terminal applet.The SKP can be configured and administered only via the Web interface. Shell access is possible by calling the applet from the Web interface or by opening terminals of the type xterm on the Linux desktop of the local console.

● Remote

– The functions are called via the terminal applet embedded in the Web interface.

– In addition to the terminal applet the functions can also be operated via a 97801/dtterm terminal. Terminal emulations (e.g. PuTTY, SINIX-TE, ConWare) can be used for accessing the SKP and the BS2000 system.

● Teleservice

Teleservice is configured and supported by the service engineer only. It is therefore not described in this manual.

Web interface

The Web interface provides the system administrator with the functions for operating and administering the SKP 3970.Access to the BS2000 console, consoles of the Linux guest systems, BS2000 dialog and SVP frames is embedded in this interface. These functions and the shell access are collec-tively referred to as terminal connections below.

Web browser

Access to the SKP system takes place in a uniform manner, i.e. both locally at the console and remotely via LAN using the Web interface. Users consequently only need a Web browser of their choice on their PCs to access the SKP, and JavaTM in order to open terminal connections.There are no special requirements for the administration PC. The user can employ any browser.

Local console

A graphical user interface including the Web interface is also available on the local console. Details regarding operation on the local console are provided in the section “Operation on the local console” on page 20.

Authentication and security

Access to the SKP system is enabled only after authentication has taken place. Authenti-cation consists of logging in with ID and password and is role-specific, see the section “The role concept” on page 16.

Language

Captions, error messages, and help texts are output in English or German according to the selected language.The language is set for each session in the welcome screen and is valid for all screens opened from that time onward. The default is German.

Download

Where meaningful (for instance for CSR or KVPLOG files) download and upload functions or local saving are offered.

3.1 The role concept

A role concept is implemented on the SKP 3970 which envisages users with different privi-leges and thus with different access options to the various functions.

The following roles are predefined for the SKP 3970 together with the corresponding user IDs:

– System administrator (administrator for short)The entire functionality for operation, maintenance and installation without any restric-tions is at the system administrator's disposal.

The administrator logs in under the SKP user ID sysadm.

– Operator Operators have access to the console, dialog and SVP connections, and they can change the passwords of the corresponding IDs cons0, …, svpst0, em9750 and emds. They can also initiate a restart or a shutdown of the SKP system, and power the S server on or off.

The operator logs in under the SKP user ID sysopr.

The operational interfaces for administrator and operator are structured in the same way. Functions which are not available for the operator are missing or deactivated.

3.2 Functional areas and structure of the GUI

The main screen of the Web interface is divided into the following functional areas:

– System Operating

– BS2000 Devices

– SKP Administration

– Power Management

The screen organization is the same for both the administrator and the operator.

Each functional range contains specific functions and actions.

The functional areas can be accessed on the main screen via tabs. The first functional area, “System Operating”, is by default opened and in the foreground. The functional areas “BS2000 Devices” and “SKP Administration” are themselves subdivided into subtabs for various subareas.

Every tab or subtab contains a list or table in which the relevant entities and permitted actions are presented.

3.3 Remote operation and local operation

The following graphical interfaces are available on the SKP:

– Web-based management interface (Web interface)The Web-based management interface can be used both remotely from the administ-ration PC and also on the local console. In this manual it is referred to as “Web interface” for short.

– Linux desktopA special version of a Linux desktop is available on the local console under the sysadm and sysopr IDs (not under the root ID!).

3.3.1 Remote operation via the Web interface

Operation and administration of the SKP are by default carried out via one or more admin-istration PCs which reside in the administration LAN, and which can therefore be connected to the Web interface of the SKP.

The GUI is invoked remotely via the administration PC’s Web browser under the following URL:

– Without name service: http://<IP-address>

– With name service configured: http://<system-name>

The welcome screen is then displayed.

To facilitate operation, the URL of the SKP can be bookmarked in the administration PC’s Web browser.

3.3.2 Operation on the local console

A Linux desktop with the following functionality is available on the local console under sysadm and sysopr:

On the local console the very same GUI with the same functional range is called as the user interface in the SKP’s Web browser by calling the URL via the predefined address:

Structure and features of the Linux desktop

After you have logged in, the Web browser (Firefox) is started automatically. The receiving side of the of the Web interface is opened via the URL http://localhost for administering the SKP.In addition to the administration interface, the Linux desktop also contains the accesses required for the service engineer.

The interface is protected by a configurable screen saver. In the upper right-hand corner, all windows contain the three customary buttons for the iconizing, maximizing / reducing and closing functions.

At its lower edge the Linux desktop contains a task bar. The “Computer” menu (popped up in the example above) is contained on the left of this task bar and the time on the right.

The “Computer” menu contains the following functions:

● SKP AdministrationStarts the Web interface for SKP administration, i.e. the Web browser Firefox with the predefined URL http://localhost.

NoteIt is advisable to use the local Web browser only to call the Web interface.

● TerminalsThe terminal connections enable the service engineer to access the SKP and the required commands. They provide an emergency entry and should not be used by the SKP administrator in normal operation.

– TerminalA terminal window of the type xterm is opened under the current ID (sysadm or sysopr). Authentication takes place implicitly.

– Root-TerminalA terminal window of the type xterm is opened under the root ID. The root password must be entered.The red background (see the example above) in the window indicates that approp-riate care should be taken when working under the privileged ID root.

● Settings

– ScreensaverThe screen saver can be configured.It is advisable to do without animation because this places a load on the system.

– LanguageThe language of the “Computer” menu can be switched.This setting has no effect on the language of the Web interface or on the system language.

● Lock ScreenThe screen is locked against unauthorized access by calling the screen saver. You must log in again to use the system.

● Log out

– Log outThe user can log out. All connections and the Linux desktop are then closed. After a few seconds the Linux desktop is automatically started again. You must log in again to use the system.

– Restart WindowmanagerThe window manager is restarted. All connections are retained. You can continue working without logging in again.

3.4 General screen layout of the Web interface

This section describes the welcome screen and the layout of the screens.

3.4.1 Welcome screen

After you call the Web interface (see page 19) the welcome screen is displayed. The welcome screen is available in German or English. This screen can be opened in the other language via the link “English Version” or “Deutsche Version”. The default is German.

The user selects the following in the welcome screen:

● Required role for the SKP

Selection between administrator or operator (see also section “The role concept” on page 16).

Beneath every SKP role the user ID is output under which authentication has to be performed: – SKP user ID sysadm for the administrator– SKP user ID sysopr for the operator

● Required language

Selection between German or English. The default is German. If you want to call the English variant of the Web interface directly, you are recom-mended to bookmark the English welcome screen in the administration PC’s Web browser and to work with this.

Clicking on START opens the SKP system’s main window in its role-specific variant.

The language is defined by the language version selected for the welcome screen.

3.4.2 Main window and action windows

Layout of the main window

The main window consists of the header pane, the navigation pane, and a function-specific display and work area.

The function areas are called using the tabs in the navigation pane.

In the following, the layout of a screen is depicted on the basis of the “Tape Devices” window. “Tape Devices” is a subtab of “BS2000 Devices”:

(1) Header pane

The header pane contains the following information:– Type of SCP 3970 system– The system name; in the example above, S190-SKP– The selected role, i.e. “Administrator” or “Operator”

The header pane contains the following menus:

– InfoBrief information about hardware and software of the current system is output in a window of its own. Clicking on Details in the new window causes further information to be output (see page 28).

– HelpThe chapter of the online help for the current page is opened in a window of its own. It also contains links to related topics, where applicable, and a link to the table of contents of the online help (see page 27).

– Close The current window is closed without causing any action on the SKP system.

(2) Navigation pane with tabs

The tabs in the navigation pane are used to call the function areas ”System Operating”, “BS2000 Devices”, “SKP Administration” and “Power-On/-Off Functions”. You can switch from one function area to another using the tabs.

The function areas “BS2000 Devices” and “SKP Administration” are subdivided into tabs for subareas.

(3) Display and work area

In its display and work area, every tab contains a list or table in which the various entities and permitted actions are presented.

The general actions are: Deletion, modification or generation of a new entry. Specific actions include: Administration of the KVPLOG files for KVP devices.

Action windows

The action windows are windows of the browser which are opened from the main window to execute specific actions. They therefore have a specific layout, and are set up in an appropriate size.

The action windows are equipped with the menu bar of the browser in which functions such as printing and searching are supported.

The following actions can be performed in each action window:

– OK: Execution of the action which is shown in the action window’s header pane

– Abort: Abort action

– Help: Call specific help text

3.5 Authentication

Authentication for the Web interface

Authentication for the Web interface is done when selecting a function for the first time.

The functions are protected by APACHE directory protection. The browser consequently opens a login window for authentication. The user name for the role which was selected beforehand in the welcome screen is shown above the input fields in this window. This user name must be entered in the input field.

The example shows the login window of Internet Explorer 6.0 under Windows XP:

An authentication, once carried out, applies to all further windows of the Web interface.

Authentication for terminal connections

Authentication for connections to the BS2000 console window, BS2000 dialog window, Linux VM console window, SVP console window, and terminal window is independent from the authentication for the Web interface.

3.6 Further functions

This section provides an overview of the information functions “Help” and “Info” of the Web interface, plus information on error cases.

3.6.1 Information function “Help” – Calling the online help

The online help can be called from within every window.

The chapter of the online help matching the current function is opened in a window of its own. This function-specific chapter contains a detailed description of the current page with its input and selection options, the meaning of the panels and pushbuttons, and background information about the current function, where applicable.

It also contains links to related topics and a link to the table of contents of the online help (Index in the header pane).

3.6.2 Information function “Info” – Displaying system information

When the Info pushbutton in the header pane of the main window is clicked on, current information about the hardware and software of the local system is output in the following shorthand report.

Example

Clicking on Show Details results in further information being output, e.g. the list of software packages.

In the detailed display Show Details is replaced by Show Info. Clicking on Show Info reduces the display to its original size.

3.6.3 Error messages and diagnostics

Further inquiries for critical actions

For critical actions (e.g. power-off or remove) which can impair the operational state of the server, a further inquiry with corresponding advice is always made.

Error handling and outputs

● Plausibility checks

When possible and necessary the commands are checked with respect to consistency before they are executed. (Example: When creating a KVP, checking on equality of the two inputs when specifying a password.)

If an input is inconsistent, execution is rejected with a corresponding advice.

Users can correct their input (or selection) and retry the command.

Inputs once made by users remain visible in the opened action window for retrying or modifying the action.

● Errors when executing an action

If an action fails, a corresponding error message together with an advice is output.

Depending on the situation, the user can:

– restart the action in an unmodified manner,

– restart the action with alterations,

– abort the action.

Inputs once made by users remain visible in the opened action window for retrying or modifying the action.

Logging file

All actions on the Web interface which cause alterations on the SKP or which could cause an error are logged in a file for diagnostics and tracing purposes.

This logging file is called:

4.1 Function area “System Operating”

Software requirements

Access to terminals is implemented via a terminal applet. For this purpose “Java Web Start” is required on the administration PC. This software can be downloaded from the URL http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/needdownload.html.

In addition, the Web browser must be configured in such a way that Java is activated and execution of applets and JavaScript is permitted. There are no specifications for selecting the browser.

The connections to the BS2000 console, the Linux VM console, the BS2000 dialog and the SVP console window can be established via “System Operating”.

● Actions

Clicking on Open enables the configured connections to the S server to be opened:

● Connection

A user ID or a connection must be selected for the connection to the BS2000 console or to the Linux VM console. The user ID is predefined for the connections to the BS2000 dialog and the SVP.

The user IDs are protected by passwords. The passwords are managed by the admin-istrator and by the operator (see “Function “Password Administration”” on page 52).

● Size of the windows

As each connection is opened in a new window, the size of the new window is deter-mined here. In the select list you can choose between the three window sizes “small”, “medium” and “large”.

The sizes are adapted in such a way that about four small windows fit into a screen, and that approximately one large window fills a whole screen.

The actual sizes depend on the particular monitor and on the configured resolution.

Authentication

Authentication for the connections to the S server is independent of authentication for the Web interface and must be done under the user ID which is provided for this connection.

Authentication under the Linux user ID is always carried out in a login window of the terminal applet which implements the terminal connections.

The windows with the connections to the S server contain the system type, system infor-mation, and the function (connection) in the header pane.

Menu of function keys

As an aid for the user, a menu of function keys suited for the connection is inserted below the terminal applet (this applies to SVP and dialog connections). Each function key can be clicked on via the mouse. The function keys of this menu can be used alternately to the function keys available on the keyboard of the PC, see the example on page 37.

The same applies for terminal connections in the “SKP administration” area (see page 51).

4.1.1 Connection to the BS2000 console

Before the connection is set up by clicking on Open, the user must select the connection or the console ID associated with it in a selection list.A connection is displayed as follows:

– Displaying the IDIf no alias name was defined for the KVP or the system. Example: cons0

– Displaying the alias name and the IDIf an alias name was defined for the KVP or the system. The alias name is displayed ahead of the ID in the title bar of operating window which then opens.

Alias name

The alias name can be assigned when a KVP entry is created or modified. The KVP or corresponding BS2000 (guest) system is thus assigned an alias name.

The alias name is only used for documentation purposes. It is displayed in the “System Operating” window as part of the connection name and in the title bar of an open connec-tion.

The alias name is used to facilitate orientation in large (VM2000) systems with a large number of console connections. The name chosen should therefore be mnemonic.

The user can make entries on the console. Keys F3 and F4 enable the user to scroll backward and forward in the history of the entries.

After establishment of the connection and after authentication, both the console function and the KVP menu (only in English) are at the user's disposal. The KVP menu is opened using the F2 key and has the following layout:

4.1.2 Connection to the Linux VM console

The connections to the Linux VM consoles are displayed in a separate row, the “Linux VM Console Window” of the “System Operating” window. This row is displayed only if Linux VM consoles or KVPs were created with the setting type = Linux.

The connection is displayed, selected and opened in the same way as for BS2000 consoles.

4.1.3 Connection to the BS2000 dialog

The login is performed under the em9750 user ID. Clicking on Open in the line “BS2000 dialog window” opens the EMDS window with the EMDS main menu. A connection to a BS2000/OSD system must be selected (e.g. LBSVM1$DIALOG in the EMDS submenup - Prefedined connections).

After this the BS2000 login can be performed.

4.1.4 Connection to the SVP

The connection to the Service Processor (SVP) is set up here. The login is performed under the svpst0 ID. Clicking on Open in the line “SVP console window” opens the EMDS window. The $KVPHV0 connection must be selected through input of s - Standard partner ($KVPHV0) (see example below).

After this the login to the svpst0 ID can be performed. The SVP frame which was used in the last session opens. Details on SVP frames are provided in the Operating Manuals for the servers of the S series.

4.2 Function area “BS2000 Devices”

The function area “BS2000 Devices” is subdivided into the following functions:

– Function “All BS2000 Devices”

– Function “KVP Devices”

– Function “LOCLAN Devices”

– Function “Tape Devices”

4.2.1 BS2000 MNs

In addition to the mandatory specifications without which a BS2000 device cannot be created, it is possible to assign the corresponding mnemonics in the BS2000 system to the BS2000 devices and their unit IDs. This assignment, which is also output in all tables, is only used for documentation purposes.

The MN specifications are not compared with the actual configuration in BS2000.

The MNs can be specified straight away when the BS2000 device is created or later when it is changed.

When and whether MNs are specified has no inflience on ongoing operation.

4.2.2 Function “All BS2000 Devices”

The function „All BS2000 Devices“ contains a table listing all configured (emulated) BS2000/OSD devices.

The following types of emulated BS2000/OSD devices exist on the SKP:– KVP devices– LOCLAN devices– Tape devices: Type CDROM and type EMFILE

Specific actions, e.g. the creation of a device, are only possible via the specific device functions. The tabs “KVP devices”, “LOCLAN devices” and “Tape devices” are available for this.

4.2.3 Function “KVP Devices”

The (emulated) KVP devices (“KVPs” for short) are instances of the console distribution program (KVP) and are required for the console inputs/outputs. KVP HV0 is predefined.

Several KVPs are needed when, for example, VM2000 is used on the S server. In this case a KVP is required for operating each VM.

Operation in BS2000 console mode is possible when a KVP has been configured and activated. For details see the section “Connection to the BS2000 console” on page 34.

“KVP Devices” contains an overview of all configured KVP devices:

Add

An action window is opened in which a new KVP can be created. A new KVP is mapped to an unit address pair (<unit-id>,<unit-id+1>). Optionally an alias name and the BS2000 MNs can be specified.

● The following applies for BS2000 KVPs (with the setting type = BS2000):When a KVP with the name HV0 is created, the console user IDs CONS0 through CONS7 with the console mnemonics C0 through C7 are created automatically. The user IDs CONS0<KVP-name> through CONS7<KVP-name> with the console mnemonics C0 through C7 are created automatically for KVPs with other names.

Information on use in BS2000A KVP’s device pair must be generated in BS2000/OSD. This can be done stati-cally via the IOCF file (see the “System Installation” manual [1]) or, in VM2000 V09.0A or higher, during ongoing operation for the current BS2000 session using the ADD-IO-UNIT command (see the “BS2000/OSD-BC Commands” manual [5]). Therefore mnemonics are defined for the unit IDs which implement the KVP device. The mnemonics in the example below are named <mn1> and <mn2>.To permit a newly created KVP to be used in VM2000 and BS2000 it must be assigned in the VM2000 monitor system:

/ADD-VM-DEVICES UNITS=(<mn1>, <mn2>), VM-ID=<vm-id>/START-VM VM-ID=<vm-id>, MAIN-CONSOLE=(<mn1>, <mn2>), ...

● The following applies for Linux KVPs (with the setting type = Linux):

Only the ID CONS0<KVP-Name> is appropriate for working with this KVP.

The actions “Logging” and “LogOpt” are not offered for Linux KVPs. The action “UserId” is limited solely to a display function for this one ID.

● The BS2000 MNs which correspond to the unit IDs of the KVP and an alias name can be specified for each KVP. These specifications are optional.

Change

A separate action window for changing the selected KVP entry is opened. The following can be changed:– The BS2000 MNs which correspond to the unit IDs of the KVP– The alias name which is assigned to the KVP or to the corresponding BS2000 (guest)

system

Changing these details has no influence on ongoing operation.

Remove

A KVP is removed only after a confirmed further inquiry. When a KVP is removed, all IDs belonging to this KVP are also deleted.

Restart

The KVP is initialized anew by stopping and starting it again. Open console connections are closed and must be explicitly reopened afterwards, if need be.

UserId

A new action window is opened to administer the KVP user IDs.

KVP IDs are assigned to the BS2000 console mnemonics. For each KVP ID (with its name completely in capital letters) a user ID with the same name (completely in lower case letters) also always exists in the Linux system. The console mnemonics can be assigned more than once, i.e. the very same console mnemonics can be assigned to several KVP IDs.

KVP IDs are displayed, and can be removed or created anew by using this function. However, the IDs created by default (see the Add item) cannot be removed.

In order for a newly defined KVP mnemonic to be used, it must have been defined in BS2000 beforehand. In the system which is assigned to this KVP, the following entry must be made in the operating section (/BEGIN OPR) of the parameter file SYSPAR.BS2.<version>:

The entry becomes active only after the next IPL, or when the guest system is started.

Logging

A new action window is opened to administer the logging files.

KVP logging files (KVPLOG) are displayed and can be removed and created anew. The files can be saved locally on the administration PC. Browser functions such as “Search” or “Print” can also be used for the file displayed.

The KVP logging files can also be displayed in the KVP menu (see the section “Connection to the BS2000 console” on page 34) and be partly administered there:4 - show logging files 5 - create a new logging file

LogOpt

A new action window is opened to set the logging options.

The logging options are displayed and can be changed. The new KVP configuration is activated immediately. The following options are available:

– Maximum number of KVPLOG files

– Maximum size of the KVPLOG files

– Logging level

4.2.4 Function “LOCLAN Devices”

Role-specific rights:– Administrator: All functions– Operator: No functions

Via LOCLAN, connections over TCP/IP between the SKP and the BS2000/OSD system can be used. Under VM2000, this interface also enables a LAN connection between the guest systems.

With a LOCLAN connection the maximum packet size is 64 Kbyte. The connection is well protected because the channel cable between the S server and the SKP implements the physical connection.

The function “LOCLAN Devices” contains a table of all configured LOCLAN devices:

Add

An action window is opened in which a new LOCLAN device can be created.

A free unit address pair (<unit-id>,<unit-id+1>) and a name which has not yet been assigned are linked to an IP address. <unit-id> must be an even number. Optionally the BS2000 MNs can be specified.

The first three bytes of the IP address are predefined during installation and initial configu-ration, and are only output (default: 192.168.138.). A value between 0 and 254 which has not yet been assigned must be chosen for the fourth byte.

Notes

– The LOCLAN device with the address pair 80/81, the IP address 192.168.138.21 and the name lbsvm1 is preconfigured. The IP address 192.168.138.12 cannot be assigned to any LOCLAN device because it is preassigned in the LOCLAN network to the SKP.

– Recommendation for the assignment of LOCLAN names:In the interests of clarity the VM number should be included in the LOCLAN name: lbsvm1 for VM 1 (monitor system or native BS2000 system), lbsvm2 for VM 2, etc. If possible the LOCLAN addresses should be incremented accordingly starting at the IP address 192.168.138.21.

– Should it be necessary to change the first three bytes (e.g. because of a restructuring of the network in the data center), a service technician must be commissioned to do this.

– Usage in BS2000:A LOCLAN’s device pair must be generated in BS2000/OSD. This can be done statically via the IOCF file (see the “System Installation” manual [1]) or during ongoing operation for the current BS2000 session using the ADD-IO-UNIT command (see the “BS2000/OSD-BC Commands, Volumes 1 - 5” manual [5]). Therefore mnemonics are defined for the unit IDs which implement the LOCLAN device. The mnemonics in the example below are named <mn1> and <mn2>.

Under VM2000, the communication devices must be exclusively assigned to the respective guest system (if need be, put an entry in the RUN file for starting the VM) (see the “VM2000” manual [3]): /ADD-VM-DEVICES UNITS=(<mn1>,<mn2>), VM-ID=<vm-id>

The devices must be attached in the respective guest system or in a native BS2000 system (see the “BS2000/OSD-BC Commands, Volumes 1 - 5” manual [5]):/ATTACH-DEVICE UNIT=(<mn1>, <mn2>)

Besides this, the communication devices and the IP addresses must be made known to BCAM in the respective BS2000/OSD system. This is done in the BCAM SOF file (Start Option File) or via commands on the console (see the “openNet Server (BS2000/OSD) BCAM” manual [4]).

Restart

The device emulation for the selected LOCLAN device is stopped and started anew.

The restart function is a measure for problematic situations in which the operation running over the device pair in question is malfunctioning and the reason for this malfunction is assumed to be in the device pair.

In normal operation a restart should be avoided because operation of this device pair would be interrupted.

4.2.5 Function “Tape Devices”


The “Tape Devices” function contains a table of all configured (emulated) tape devices (type = CDROM and EMFILE).

An action window is opened, in which a new emulated tape device can be created. The type (CDROM or EMFILE) and a free unit number (<unit-id>) must be selected. Optionally the BS2000 MN can be specified.

Notes

– Only one emulated tape device of the type CDROM can be created.

– Each tape device represents precisely one BS2000 volume.

– No continuation tape processing is possible.

– Important note: Tape devices of the type EMFILE are mapped to files on the SKP. A maximum size of 4 GB applies for these. You are consequently recommended not to use more than 6 tape devices of the type EMFILE on an SKP.

Download

The file to which the emulated tape device is mapped (the emulation file) can be downloaded and thus saved to the administrator's local PC.

Upload (Only for type = EMFILE)

A suitable file (e.g. one which has been downloaded from another SKP beforehand) can be transferred from the local PC to the SKP system and deposited there in such a way that it can be used as an image of a configured tape device.

Note for Upload and Download

Considerable wait times can occur when large files are uploaded or downloaded. You should not abort the operation.

Examples of how Upload and Download are used

Further usage scenarios are feasible with emulated tape devices, for instance:

● Exchange of BS2000/OSD data via the emulation files. This is possible between S servers and also between S servers and SX servers.

Examples

1. Export of the BS2000/OSD data of the first S server to an emulated tape device on the SKP

2. Download to the administrator’s PC

3. Upload from the administrator’s PC to the SKP of the second S server. The emulated target tape device must already have been configured beforehand.

4. Import of the BS2000/OSD data to the second S server

● Writing your own CDROMs in the format of the emulation file

Example

The function area “SKP Administration” is subdivided into the following functions:

4.3.1 Function “Terminal Window”


The user can establish a terminal connection under an arbitrary ID of the SKP 3970, for instance under sysadm.

This function is implemented in a similar way as in the function area “System Operating” (see page 31).

Note

The terminal connections enable the service engineer to access the SKP and the required commands. They provide an emergency entry and should not be used by the SKP administrator in normal operation.

4.3.2 Function “Password Administration”

Role-specific rights:– Administrator: All functions– Operator: All functions with one exception: An operator may not administer the

password for the administrator ID.

Both the administrator and the operator administer the passwords for the user IDs which are relevant for system operating and the Web interface. They can assign or modify passwords.

The following IDs are concerned here:– The console IDs – e.g. cons0, ... , cons7, …– The dialog ID em9750– The SVP ID svpst0– The administrator and operator IDs sysadm and sysopr

A password can be assigned to a single ID. But it is also possible to select a list of several IDs and to assign the very same password to all these IDs simultaneously.

The operator can set the passwords for all IDs except sysadm.

For root the password cannot be set via this interface.

4.3.3 Function “CSR Administration”


CSR (Configuration Save&Restore), the backup of the configuration data, saves system-relevant files in a file archive or on a floppy disk. From there they can be restored again.

The main applications areas are:– the restoration of configuration data after a reinstallation, and– the restoration of configuration data when files have been destroyed.

Saving/submitting configuration data

The backup of configuration data can be carried out during normal operation of the system. The user must ensure, however, that the files are not modified during this time.

Preparing recovery

The configuration data is restored. Before a backup of the configuration data is imported, first a check is made to see whether the backup data is valid, and whether it can be imported into this system.

If this is the case, an rc script (rc=run control) is inserted into the system which activates the new configuration data the next time the system is shut down (init 6).

This change preparation can be undone until the system has been shut down.

Download/Upload

The CSR files can be downloaded and saved on the administration PC. They can be read in again by uploading them.

Note

The names of the CSR files may not be corrupted, otherwise they will not be accepted when you want to upload the files.

Further functions

Besides backup and preparation for restoration, the function „CSR Administration“ offers the following administrative functions:– Display the recovery state– Display the last CSR action– Overview of the existing archives– Delete single archives

4.3.4 Function “Time Configuration”


The window contains two functions:

Local Time

The local time for the SKP can be specified in the upper part of the window. This function is enabled only when no NTP server is configured. The time set is transferred immediately to the SKP.

Note

– The changed time is forwarded to the SVP and from there to BS2000. The change arrives in BS2000 with a long delay. While the time is being adjusted, no messages to this effect are issued.

– BS2000 accepts a maximum of 15 minutes in a single step. In the case of major chan-ges, BS2000 executes with the time of its own hardware clock after the first message has been issued.

NTP Configuration

The NTP configuration can be specified in the lower area of the window.

From the NTP servers that are configured and which can be reached via LAN the NTP (Network Time Protocol) determines the server with the most accurate time. The SKP uses this server as the current timer and displays it as “active”. The SKP forwards its time to the BS2000 via the SVP of the S server.

An overview of the configured NTP servers containing the following configuration data is displayed:

– IP address– Status (active or inactive)– Stratum (NTP server quality)– Time difference

Add a server

Another NTP server can be added to the configuration. To do this, the corresponding IP address must be specified.

Remove

The NTP server for which Remove was clicked on is removed only after a confirmed further inquiry.

The order of the entries is not relevant. At regular intervals NTP determines the server with the most accurate time and uses this as the current time server. The evaluation is based on the NTP server quality (stratum) and other current values (e.g. time difference and dispersion). The stratum values lie between 0 and 16. The smaller the value, the better the NTP server's clock is.

4.3.5 Function “LAN Configuration”


The function “LAN Configuration” contains a table of all existing LAN interfaces and their configuration data:

The following configuration data is displayed for each LAN interface:

– The interface name

– The alias name of the interface. The alias names are assigned during installation and should be self-explanatory.

– The hardware address (MAC address) of the interface

– The IP address

– The net mask

– The broadcast address

– The maximum packet size (MTU: Maximum Transmission Unit)

– The status: UP or DOWN

– The static (DHCP=NO) or dynamic (DHCP=YES) LAN configuration

Alias Name

The alias names indicate how the LAN interfaces involved are used. The administrator iden-tifies the LAN interface to the administration LAN by the alias name admin. The alias name admin must be assigned when the system is installed. If alias names are not assigned or are misleading, you are urgently advised to discuss this with the service engineer.

Example

Alias mame S3PB_com_skpb stands for slot 3, port B and for communication with the redundant SKP “B”.

Modify

Modification of the configuration data is offered only for the LAN interface to the admini-stration LAN (alias name admin). Clicking on Modify causes a separate window for confi-guring the relevant LAN interface to open:

Note

When the IP address in the administration LAN is reconfigured, the connection between the Web interface and the system is cleared down if required. The connection must then be reestablished via the new address.

Modify Hostname

After the configuration data of the LAN interfaces, the “LAN Configuration” function displays a small table with the current host name (uname -n) and its Default Gateway. Clicking on Modify Hostname enables the host name to be opened in a separate window.

4.4 Function area “Power Management”

Role-specific rights:– Administrator: All functions– Operator: All functions

The “Power-Management“ functions are used to define the BS2000 automatic power-on and the immediate manual switch on or off. The SKP can also be shut down and restarted.

4.4.1 Enable/disable automatic power-on of the BS2000 server

When the automatic power-on is enabled the SKP sends a signal to switch on the S server when it is started up. The signal is sent to the S server via the optional on/off switch box. The automatic power-on is thus enabled only when the on/off switch box is present.

The current setting for the automatic power-on is displayed in the “Current State / Result” field (status field).

The automatic power-on is enabled or disabled using the Change Setting button. After the action has been submitted the setting is changed and the display in the Current State field is updated.

Automatic initiated IPL (Initial Program Load) of BS2000/OSD

If a Power On IPL is also configured in the SVP, the operating system (BS2000/OSD or VM2000) is loaded automatically (in IPL or VIPL mode) after power-on and IMPL (Initial Micro Program Load).

The Power On IPL setting is set in the SVP frame LOAD PRESET. You reach this SVP frame as follows:

Ê Function key F23 takes you to the SVP frame MODE SELECTION FRAME.

Ê Entering AU in the SELECTION field takes you to the SVP frame AUXILIARY.

Ê Entering 5 in the SELECTION field takes you to the SVP frame LOAD PRESET.

(1) 1 in input field START MODE selects automatic start (1 START AUTO).

(2) Enter the IPL device (here 6B2A) under IPL DEVICE in input field PRESET GROUP.

(3) 1 in input field POWER ON IPL activates the automatically triggered IPL (ENABLE).

Ê Save the settings using function key F12 (CATALOG).

Ê Return to the SVP frame MODE SELECTION FRAME using function key F23.

4.4.2 Power-on/-off of the BS2000 Server

The S server server can be powered on or powered off manually. More precisely: A signal is sent to the S server to power it on or off. The signal is sent to the S server via the optional on/off switch box. The automatic power-on is thus enabled only when the on/off switch box is present, otherwise an error message is issued.

Power-on

A multiple power-on signal, or a power-on signal when the server is active, is harmless.

In order that BS2000/OSD or VM2000 are also started when the server is powered on, the setting Power On IPL in the SVP frame LOAD PRESET“ must be set accord-ingly (for details see “Automatic initiated IPL (Initial Program Load) of BS2000/OSD” on page 60).

Power-off

The S server is powered off after a confirmed further inquiry.

The BS2000/OSD system is stopped immediately, i.e. it is not terminated in an orderly manner in the context of a shutdown process.

4.4.3 Shutting down/restarting the SKP

It is possible to shut down the SKP (including power-off), or to shut it down and to start it anew immediately afterwards. The action selected is executed by submitting it.

The reason - scheduled or unscheduled - must be logged and furnished with a commentary. The reason is logged with the commentary and entered in the logging file (see page 29).Before executing the action a further inquiry is issued.

Caution

– All connections (e.g. the console connections) to the S server are closed. As long as the SKP is switched off the S server cannot be operated via the SKP. Only when OMNIS is used can the systems still be operated (see the OMNIS manuals [6] and [7]).

– When the SKP is shut down without a restart it cannot be restarted remotely. For starting the SKP again you must press the power on button.

5 KVP messagesThe messages issued by the console distribution program (KVP) in UNIX mode begin with the message code KVP.

KVP0000 7.500 KVP VERSION (&00) INITIALISED ON (&01) AT (&02)

&00 = KVP version number, &01 = Date, &02 = Time

KVP0001 KVP PARAMETER FILE ERROR

Meaning

The KVP parameter file kvpparam contains a syntax error, the file no longer exists or the system has no further available storage space.

1. On starting up KVP:

If the file is present and sufficient storage space is available, the file is renamed to /opt/SMAWL/conf/kvpparam.defect. A new parameter file with the default parameter content is then written and used by KVP.

2. When a new KVP parameter file is activated:

KVP continues to use the old parameter records.

Response

1. Rename the file kvpparam.defect to kvpparam.<KVP-name> and correct the defective entry in the file or modify the new file kvpparam.<KVP-name> using the KVP configuration. To do this it is necessary to rewrite the logging options and all the records.

You must then activate the new configuration.

2. Correct the defective entry in the file. Then activate the corrected configuration.

KVP0002 KVP messages

KVP0002 NEW KVP PARAMETER FILE ACTIVATED

KVP0005 CURRENT TRANSLATION TABLES: (&00)

&00 = Designation of the line code or the conversion tables

Meaning

The BS2000 console messages are converted from EBCDIC and ASCII and vice versa on the basis of the specified standards. The default setting is Euro/International ISO 8859-1 (ASCII) to BS2000 EBCDIC.DF.04-1 and vice versa.

KVP0006 LANGUAGE TRANSLATION FILE ERROR (&00)

&00 = Designation of the line code or the conversion table

Meaning

The international character translation file inter.atoe or inter.etoa is not present and the system has no further available storage space in which to create such a file. KVP termi-nates.

Response

Make storage space available under /opt.

KVP0008 OPEN ERROR NODE=(&00) (&01)

&00 = Node, &01 = Reason

KVP0010 CONNECTION REQUEST REJECTED: USERID (&00) IS LOCKED

&00 = User ID (login name)

Meaning

1. The specified user ID has been locked.

2. The user ID has been declared invalid because it has not been used for the specified number of days.

3. The expiry date of the specified user ID has been reached.

After this date it is no longer possible to access the system under this user ID.

Response

It remains locked until the password of the specified user ID is defined via the UNIX user administration.

KVP0013 STATION (&00) REJECTED BY SYSTEM: CONSOLE (&01) IS UNKNOWN

&00 = User ID, &01 = Mnemonic name of console

Response

The specified mnemonic name of the console must either be entered in the BS2000 parameter file SYSPAR.BS2.... (the precise file name depends on the version) or must be modified in the KVP parameter file.

KVP0014 STATION (&00) REJECTED BY SYSTEM: CONSOLE (&01) IS ALREADY ASSIGNED

&00 = User ID, &01 = Mnemonic name of console

Meaning

Another station is already logged on at the BS2000 system with the specified mnemonic console name. This mnemonic console name is not currently available.

KVP0019 SYSTEM IS NOT READY FOR INPUT

Meaning

BS2000 is not active, the IPL has not terminated or still has to be started. The message is output if console I/O traffic (read path) is disrupted (system/hardware error).

Response

You must wait for the end of the current IPL or perform a new IPL.

KVP0020 SYSTEM INPUT FROM CONSOLE (&00) TIMED OUT

&00 = Mnemonic name of console

Meaning

BS2000 has not accepted an input.

Response

Repeat the input. If it is rejected again, perform a new IPL.

KVP0041 COMMENCING BS2000 SHUTDOWN - (&00)

&00 = Explanatory text

Meaning

An extraordinary BS2000 shutdown has been initiated. The text specifies the cause.

&00 = Maximum wait time

Meaning

BS2000 is termited. KVP is then terminated. UNIX is terminated at the latest on expiry of the specified time.

This message may also be issued if an environment fault has occurred.

– Fan fault– Temperature monitoring– Power supply fault

Response

In the case of an environment fault: identify and eliminate the cause. If necessary, inform the service staff.

KVP0054 INPUT TO (&00) REJECTED UNTIL LOGGING IS POSSIBLE

&00 = Partner (SYS, SVP)

Response

The original error must be eliminated (see the preceding messages). You can then repeat the input. If it is not possible to eliminate the original error, logging may also be deactivated.

KVP0070 NO WORKING-STORAGE AVAILABLE FOR (&00) - ENTER INPUT AGAIN

&00 = KVP name (HV0, VM1, VM2 etc.)

Response

You must repeat the input. If this does not help, you must terminate KVP via the “KVP Administration” menu and then restart it.

KVP0071 INPUT LOCKED - PRESS F2 KEY

Response

Input is currently locked. You can press the F2 key to open a selection screen in which you can unlock input. To do this, you must enter the password.

If the UNIX login is locked, access to the console is aborted. Use of the login remains locked until the password corresponding to the login is defined via the UNIX user administration.

KVP0072 'LAST MESSAGES' CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED - NO MEMORY AVAILABLE

Meaning

The menu function “LAST MESSAGES” cannot be executed because the file system is full.

Response

Delete any unnecessary files.

KVP0111 STATION (&00) CONNECTED FROM TERMINAL ((&01)) AS CONSOLE (&02)

&00 = User ID, &01 = Device name, &02 = Mnemonic name of console or SVP device

KVP0112 STATION (&00) DISCONNECTED FROM TERMINAL ((&01)) AS CONSOLE (&02)

&00 = User ID, &01 = Device name, &02 = Mnemonic name of console or SVP device

KVP0120 INVALID BS2000 MESSAGE TO CONSOLE (&00)

&00 = Mnemonic name of console

Meaning

The specified length of a BS2000 message does not correspond to the received length. The message is also output if console I/O traffic is disrupted.

Inform the service staff because a system/hardware error or an internal overwrite error has occurred.

KVP0801 FILE-LOGGING FAILED

Response

The access rights to the file structure /var/SMAWL/log/kvp and the file /var/SMAWL/log/kvp/log_info should be checked and, if necessary, corrected. This message is also output if archiving is set to FORCED and none of the existing logging files could be archived. The system administrator must make sure that the archiving command can be terminated without errors or the files must be deleted.

KVP0802 (&00) ARCHIVING FAILED

&00 = Archive file name

Meaning

The archiving command terminated with an error. If Archiving required is set then the oldest logging file is deleted when the configured number of logging files is reached. If Archiving requested is set then the attempt to archive the file is repeated at periodic intervals.

Response

Check the archiving command for errors. If you are archiving to tape you may need to insert a new tape and perform a manual backup.

KVP5000 KVP MESSAGE FILE COULD NOT BE OPENED

Meaning

The message file kvp.cat under /opt/SMAWL/nls/msg/De or /opt/SMAWL/nls/msg/En no longer exists or the access rights are set incorrectly. KVP continues to run but uses English message texts.

Response

You should check the file access rights and correct them if necessary. The file can be read in again from the backup volume or the installation volume. You must then restart KVP.

KVP5001 INVALID KVP PARAMETER (&00)

&00 = Parameter

Meaning

KVP was called with invalid parameters. KVP terminates.

Response

Call KVP with valid parameters:– The KVP name must consist of three alphanumeric characters.– The channel parameter must be a number between 0 and 127.– The unit parameter must be a number between 0 and 254.– The line parameter consists of the letter B (bus) or C (channel).– The trace parameter must be a number between 1 and 255.

6.2 Alternate operating options for the SKP 3970

With the Web interface a complete interface is at the customer's disposal for operation and administration of the SKP 3970, as well as for system operating and system administration of the S server.

6.2.1 Terminal emulations

In addition to the Web interface, it is also possible to continue to use the terminal emulations (e.g. PuTTY, SinixTE, and ConWare) used up to now for access to the BS2000 system (see also figure 2 on page 13), and thus to continue to use the well-appreciated environment.

The main keys for operating an EM9750 are shown in the table below. For further details see the “EMDS (SINIX)” manual [8].

Since the PF keys which are necessary for the operation of the SVP are mapped to the keys P1, P2, etc., ESC F2, for example, must be pressed for the PF2 key.

6.2.2 Telnet access

Terminal access to an SKP 3970 can by default be implemented only via Secure Shell (SSH) and is thus a safeguarded access.

If the customer uses emulation software (e.g. SinixTE 5.0) which does not support Secure Shell (SSH), Telnet must be explicitly activated for this purpose. This is the task of the service technician.

In the display of the system information Info the current status of Telnet (active/inactive) is shown.

PuTTY

The terminal emulation PuTTY supports Secure Shell (SSH). It is available as freeware at the URL http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
