Twenty high

school students

headed to Car-

thage, MO for the

annual MO-KAN-

NE Pre-College

Student Leader-

ship Conference,

Blazing a Trail:

making a path for others to follow, on June 23rd. Along the way they took the time to visit college

campuses and technical schools. The first day they

toured Labette Community College, Pittsburg State

University, and Vatterott College. The next morn-

ing they headed to Ozark Christian College before

spending the afternoon exploring and learning

about the Fantastic Caverns. While at Fantastic

Caverns they learned how long it takes for a stal-

actite or stalagmite to grow just one inch of calci-

um deposits: 100 years! That evening the students

participated in special rodeo games such as dress-

ing a goat, barrel racing with stick horses, and

roping. The next morning was spent networking

with other students from participating TRIO pro-

grams in the area while attending sessions on

studying abroad, how to communicate without

words, leadership skills, among many others. That

afternoon students participated in quiz bowl, ora-

tory, and essay writing competitions. During the

banquet that evening students were entertained by

keynote speaker, Wade Rouse, author and humor-

ist. The next morning was the awards banquet

were the following students were presented awards

for placing in the following competitions: Logan

Littlejohn, Karrington Turner, and Joshua Smith

for 2nd place in the Quiz Bowl; Ashley Riggs for

3rd place in the Oratory Competition; Maejaun

Howard for 3rd place in the essay writing contest.

On June 30th, thirty four high school students

headed to their favorite destination, Sky Ranch, in

Quapaw, OK for some fun in the sun where they

enjoyed swimming in the spring fed creek, riding

the horses on the peaceful trials, a very competitive

game of paintball, over coming their fears while zip

lining, practiced their skeet shooting skills and

even sliding down the Sklyde, a giant slip n slide

on the side of a hill. There were workshops to im-

prove their soft skills in things such as problem

solving, stronger work ethic, communication and

making change. During these workshops students

were able to witness how not to conduct yourself

during an interview, do a mock interview them-

selves, learn how to communicate better with their

peers, discovered ways to easily solve problems,

and how to count change back.

Come step back in time with Talent Search
