Lesson Plan Title: Skittles Data Analysis Date: 10/20/2015 Course/Subject: Math
Content Standards/Clear Objective(s): ISTE Standards for Teachers (ISTE) 1.d Identify trends and forecast possibilities 3.dProcess data and report results 4.aTeachers align their instructional goals and activities with school and district priorities and Ohio’s academic content standards. 4.c Teachers communicate clear learning goals and explicitly link learning activities to those defined goals. 4.d Teachers apply knowledge of how students think and learn to instructional design and delivery. Ohio Standards for Teaching Profession (OSTP) 3.c Teachers analyze data to monitor student progress and learning, and to plan, differentiate and modify instruction.
Rubric (aligned with objectives):
Materials (list): Skittles (Five bags per kid)
Calculator
Pencil
Paper
Outcomes:
For the students to be able to figure out the probability of the colors in each skittles bag
To be able to listen and follow directions Procedures/Sequence:
The students will open one bag of skittles and count the total number of skittles in that bag
Then the students will separate the colors into piles
Then they want to count each of the colors total
Once they have to total they will take that number and then divide by the total number of skittles in the bag
They will continue to do this for each bag
Other Comments/Notes:
Differentiation matching student/s need: We can get smaller bags for the students
We can have the students only pick out 10 skittles from each bag to make the percentages easier to work with
We can make the students only have to do two bags instead of five
Homework/Practice: For homework the students will do the same exact thing but instead of a regular bag of skittles they can pick in choose to
do tropical or any other type of skittles
With this homework we would really like an older sibling or adult to help out and be there if needed
Evaluation of lesson and adaptation I may need to make to continue work tomorrow: Tomorrow we can do a bag of M&M’s and again do the same exact thing
Again being able to listen and follow directions, not eating the candy just counting
