Skinny Call Control Protocol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Skinny Call Control Protocol (SCCP, or short Skinny) is a proprietary network
terminal control protocol originally developed by elsius ystems!
The ""# technology is now owned and defined by "isco ystems, $nc! as a messaging
system between a kinny client and the "isco "all%anager ! &'amples of skinny clients
include the "isco ** series of $# phones, "isco $# "ommunicator softphone and the
+*!--b wireless "isco *, along with "isco .nity voicemail server! kinny is a
lightweight protocol which allows for efficient communication with "isco "all%anager !/-0 "all%anager acts as a signaling pro'y for call events initiated over other common
protocols such as 1!22, $#, $34 and5or %6"#!

8 kinny client uses T"#5$# to communicate with one or more "all %anager
applications in a cluster! $t uses the 9ealBtime Transport #rotocol (9T#) over .3#B
transport for the bearer traffic (realBtime audio stream) with other kinny clients or an1!22 terminal! ""# is a stimulusBbased protocol and is designed as a
communications protocol for hardware endpoints and other embedded systems, with
significant "#. and memory constraints!
[edit] Origin
"isco acCuired ""# technology when it acCuired elsius "orporation in -+!/0 8s a
remnant of the elsius origin of the current "isco $# phones, the default device name
format for registered "isco phones with "all%anager is &# BB as in Selsius Ethernet
Phone BB followed by the %8" address! "isco also has marketed a kinnyBbasedsoftphone called "isco $# "ommunicator!
[edit] Other implementations
ther companies like ymbol Technologies, ocket$#, and 3igium have implemented
this protocol in =o$# Terminals (phones), %edia 6ateway "ontrollers, and oftswitches!
8n open source implementation is available in the 8sterisk (#7<) system! $#7lue/20
markets a software phone (soft phone) which uses ""# for signaling and emulates a
"isco ?* hardware phone!
