About This Guide
How is this guide organized?
This section, “Getting Started,” contains all of the preparation information for the Skin Wise program, such as learning objectives, pre-work, required materials, and room set-up.
Following this section is the “Training At A Glance” table. This table can serve as your overview reference, showing the module names, timings, and process descriptions for the entire program.
Finally, the program itself is divided into modules, each of which is comprised of one or more lessons. A module is a self-contained portion of the program, usually lasting anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes, while a lesson is a shorter (typically 5-20 minute) topic area. Each module begins with a one-page summary showing the Purpose, Time, Process, and Materials for the module. Use these summary pages to get an overview of the module that follows.

How is the text laid out in this guide?
Every action in the program is described in this guide by a text block like this one, with a margin icon, a title line, and the actual text. The icons are designed to help catch your eye and draw quick attention to “what to do and how to do it.” For example, the icon to the left indicates that you, the instructor, say something next. The title line gives a brief description of what to do, and is followed by the actual script, instruction set, key points, etc. that are needed to complete the action.
A complete list of the margin icons used in this guide is provided on the following page.
IMPORTANT NOTE
You may also occasionally find important notes such as this one in the text of this guide. These shaded boxes provide particularly important information in an attention-getting format.

Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Overview
inform
SAY
Elemental NatureSM is based on the science of Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old healing tradition that tells us that the essence of the five natural elements—Infinity, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth—are found in all living things, including you. When these elements are balanced, you skin and scalp look healthy, vital and radiant. When skin and scalp concerns surface, it is a signal that an element needs to be balanced. Balancing the elements is the heart of Elemental Nature.SM
The elements cannot be taken literally. You do not have an actual fire burning within you. Rather, these elements represent the five forces that are present within all living things.
Slide 8
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Educator Guide
Page 10 Skin Wise
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Overview
SAY
Infinity is the open expanse of the universe. Look around this room. What is it composed of? 99.99% empty space. But that is what makes it useful. If this room were solid, we could not hold class in here.
Slide 9
SAY
Air moves across space and therefore represents movement. The movement of your body, blood, the swaying of trees, etc. Any form of movement is a representation of air.
Slide 10
Leader Guide Day 1: Elemental NatureSM
© 2012 Page 11 Rev. Date 4/26/2012
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Overview
SAY
Fire creates heat, which in turn creates change or transformation. If you burn a log in a fireplace, when the fire goes out, ash remains. Fire created this change. Fire represents all changes that occur in the body, including digestion and the transformation of energy into food.
Slide 11
SAY
Water represents cohesive or attractive forces. Gravity is a good example for water. What does gravity do? It holds us on the planet, and creates a relationship between us and the earth so we can live off of it. Water is the glue that holds the elements together.
Slide 12
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Educator Guide
Page 12 Skin Wise
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Overview
SAY
Earth represents solid matter. If this room is 99.99% empty space, the .01% that seems solid is earth: the floor, ceiling, walls, tables, chairs, etc.
Slide 13
SAY
The five elements combine to form three functional groups as they interact within the body: Infinity and Air relate closely. So do Water and Earth. Fire is its own group.
Slide 14
Leader Guide Day 1: Elemental NatureSM
© 2012 Page 13 Rev. Date 4/26/2012
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Overview
SAY
All of these elements are present in everyone. If no one had Infinity/Air, for example, we’d all be statues. However, each of you has a unique combination of these elements that make up your mind-body constitution, or prakruti. You are born with a particular prakruti that never changes throughout your life. It is who you are.
Some people have mostly Infinity/Air with just some Fire and a little Water/Earth. These people are quick thinkers, social and move around a lot. Others have more Fire or Water/Earth, but we all have some of all five elements.
Slide 15
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Educator Guide
Page 14 Skin Wise
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Overview
SAY
Because prakruti never changes, there is little you can do to balance it. However, there is another term you need to know, vikruti, which are imbalanced states caused by too much of a particular element.
How do you get an imbalance? According to Ayurveda, every experience you have manifests in your mind and body. They influence the elements within you, either increasing or decreasing them. When your emotions, diet, lifestyle, etc., cause a particular element to increase in your body, you may develop an imbalance. For example, if you sunbathe during the summer, the sun—which has Fire qualities—can cause sunburn. Sunburn is a Fire vikruti. If you travel frequently, the level of Infinity/Air within you will increase, and you may notice an imbalance related to too much movement, like insomnia.
Slide 16
Leader Guide Day 1: Elemental NatureSM
© 2012 Page 15 Rev. Date 4/26/2012
Day 1: Elemental NatureSM Overview
SAY
Prakruti focuses on the individual as a whole, whereas vikruti focuses on the condition or imbalance. It’s important not to label people as being a particular element because everyone has all three. It’s better to identify the element(s) of an imbalance (vikruti). Therefore, a person is not Fire, but their skin may have a Fire imbalance.

ACTIVITY: ELEMENTAL NATURESM RESEARCH
Divide the class into three teams.
Assign each team one of the following categories:
– Infinity/Air
– Fire
– Water/Earth
Instruct teams to use their workbook to research their assigned Elemental NatureSM and prepare a short presentation that will include the skin conditions associated with the imbalance.
Walk around the room, and coach as needed.
Give teams 10 minutes to complete the activity.
IMPORTANT NOTE
During the next several slides, debrief the Elemental NatureSM research activity by asking for each team to present their category to the rest of the class. Begin by briefly reviewing the qualities of each Elemental Nature,SM (slides will build), and then call on teams to present in the following order:
Infinity/Air
Fire
Water/Earth

Aveda Facial Treatment Outline
SAY
Welcome back from lunch. Now that you’ve learned all about Elemental NatureSM and Aveda Skin Care, we’re going to dive into the steps that comprise an Aveda facial treatment. Remember, though, that every guest is treated individually based on the imbalances current at the time of their service. Every facial treatment is customized according to the guest’s individual needs using the Elemental NatureSM philosophy.
Earlier, you learned all about the Aveda Spa Rituals and how and when to perform them during an Aveda facial treatment. Now we’re going to expand on this by outlining the more technical components of the Aveda facial treatment.
Day 1: Aveda Facial Treatments Educator Guide
Page 42 Skin Wise
Day 1: Aveda Facial Outline
Slide 50
SAY
The pre-cleanse step:
Prepares the facial skin for cleansing
Helps the skin adjust to the activity of the cleanser
Helps prevent over-stimulation of the skin
The pre-cleanse step begins with removing any eye makeup and lip color from the guest’s face. To remove eye makeup, Pure Comfort™ Eye Makeup Remover is applied to pre-moistened cotton compresses and applied to the eyes. To remove lip color, All-Sensitive™ Body Formula is applied to pre-moistened cotton compresses and applied to the lips. Finally, the appropriate Aveda composition is applied to the skin.
All cleansers are stimulants to the skin. When a guest is using different skin care line other than Aveda, we consider their skin to be sensitive, as it most likely has been exposed to synthetic and artificial ingredients. By preparing the skin using an Aveda composition during the pre-cleanse step, we’re giving the skin a “cushion” on which the cleanser can sit during the cleansing step that follows. This allows the skin to slowly adjust to the activity of the cleanser, helping reduce the possibility of any over-stimulation of the skin

during the cleansing process.
Slide 51
SAY
The cleanse step:
Purifies surface impurities
Mimics self-care
The Aveda cleansing process and manipulations mimic the movements the guest performs when cleansing their skin at home. It’s important to avoid using too much pressure, during this step, so as not to over-stimulate or irritate the skin.

SAY
The removal procedure (aromatic steam towel) step:
Softens the skin
Releases facial tension
Provides therapeutic benefits through the inhalation of aroma
The removal procedure involves using an aromatic steam towel to soften and effectively remove product from the skin. There are many therapeutic benefits associated with using aromatic steam towels; the aroma helps relax the guest and balance the autonomic nervous system.
Aveda has developed specific aromatic steam towel application procedures and manipulations that stimulate the lymph nodes and reduce muscular tension in the face.
I’d like to take this time to mention our core curriculum, The Art and Science of Esthiology. All of Aveda’s foundational spa theories and techniques are clearly laid out for you in this curriculum. It consists of two volumes and three DVDs and is designed to be self-guided. I highly encourage you to purchase this resource for your salon/spa and use it elevate your esthetic knowledge and skills.

The tone step:
Ensures the previously applied product is neutralized and removed
Prepares the skin for the next step of the treatment
Infuses hydration into the skin
Toners can be applied using either a spray or compress method. Make sure to use a lot of toner during a facial treatment; it helps replenish the water component of the hydrolipidic film.
Slide 54
SAY
The facial compress step:
