Nigeria is facing a serious unemployment crisis in Nigeria with 55%
youth unemployment + underemployment

Developing appropriate skills through TVET could help Nigeria stem
youth unemployment
• In 2016, the World Bank “Skills for Competitiveness and
Employability” report examined the demand in priority
economic and job growth sectors and how to ensure the
right skills are available.
• Transition into more productive employment requires
higher levels of skills yet ~30% of Nigerian youth have
not progressed beyond primary school education
• >65% of the population are below the age of 30 and this
represents a large and burgeoning youth base
• It is important for the Nigerian Government to implement
policies and programs that improve access to TVET and
equip youth with the right skills for employment and/or
self-sustainability

Obstacles for employers when trying to hire new employees

For TVET implementation to be successful, it must be treated
as a business activity not CSR.
TVET requires significant investment in:
• Curriculum development, training methodology and alignment with national education policies
• Demo equipment and training centers
• Training of Trainers
• Allowance for Trainees
• Operations and maintenance of training centers
• Continuous certification and retraining of Trainers
• More industries to absorb Trainees for on-the-job experience and employment

Collaboration between the private and public sector is required for
successful TVET implementation in Nigeria
