What is CPR?
• Attempt to keep alive an unconscious casualty by simulating the actions of their lungs and heart
• 2 Rescue Breaths to• 30 Chest Compressions• Not intended to restart the heart, just
to keep casualty alive until medical help arrives (so call 999 before starting)
• Of limited use in a wilderness situation due to lengthy response time for emergency services
When should I use CPR?
• On an unconscious, non-breathing casualty
When should I NOT use CPR?
• On a conscious casualty• On a hypothermic casualty
Video: ‘No Hands’ CPR (2.32)
Summary:• Open Airway• Call for/get help• 30 Chest Compressions• 2 Rescue Breaths• Repeat• If more than 1 first aider, swap every
2 minutes (4 repetitions)• Continue until: casualty recovers,
medical help arrives or too exhausted to continue
Drowning
