SKIINGBy: Angus
HISTORY OF SKIINGNobody knows the exact
year that skiing was invented
but it is estimated that the
Cro-Magnon man first
attached two planks to his
feet 22 thousand years ago. It
was first used as a technique for hunting animals that lived
in snowy climates
OLD SKIS
Skis have changed a lot
since from the first day
skiing was invented to now.
The first skis ever made
were simply made out of
carved wood. As those skis
developed they began to
have straps on the skis so
your feet wouldn’t fall off.
MODERN SKIS
Skis have changed from the first skis that were just wood to the advanced technology
of today. Today skis are made out of layers of
different materials put together. Skis are so
advanced today that there are different
kinds of skis for different terrain. There are freestyle skis which are usually twin tips so you
can land backwards off of a jump. There are
also powder skis which are thicker to make it
easier to ski In deep powder. Lastly there are
racing skis which are light weight so you can go faster.
POLES
NOW THENThe first ski poles ever made
were simply sticks. After that
people added little circle things on the bottom which
worked a lot better than
before. During that time they
started to sharpen the bottom.
Eventually ski poles were made out of bamboo.
Ski poles now have changed
a lot since the first ski poles.
The first ski poles were just
sticks and now they are
metal with plastic at the
bottom with plastic handles
with a strap.
EQUIPMENT
OTHER THAN
SKIS AND
POLES
HELMETS
If there were no helmets there would
be a much higher risk for concussions
and even death. There are still lots of
concussions with helmets and if there
were no helmets the number of
concussions would go up by a lot.
There are two different kinds of
helmets. There are just regular helmets
with lots of protection if your head hits
a rail in the terrain park and there are
more aerodynamic helmets for racing
.
GOGGLES
Goggles have come a long way
since they were first invented.
When they were first invented
they were just a lens and a
strap. Now they are very
complex and a lot better. Now
goggles are made out of
special material and special
lenses. Some goggles even
come with an extra pair of
lenses for different light
conditions.
BOOTS
Boots are a very important part of
skiing. If there were no boots your
feet would slide off of the skis a lot.
Boots are fit specially to your foot so
that it is not too tight and not too
loose. Boots clip into bindings which
are fit perfectly to your boot so your
feet are attached to your skis. Boots
also help not break your legs
because they can pop out of the
bindings.
WHAT ARE
THE
DIFFERENT
TYPES OF
RUNS/SKIING?
POWDER SKIING
Powder runs are when there has been a big dump of snow. Sometimes you have to hike a little bit to get to the best powder. You can usually use any type of ski but there are a special kind of ski meant for skiing. These skis are called powder skis. Powder skis are much wider than different kinds of skis so they skim across the top of the powder. Powder skiing can only be a couple centimetres of powder or it can be waist deep of powder.
GROOMED RUNS
Groomed runs are the easiest to keep control on because they have no bumps or obstacles. To make a groomed run a vehicle drives up the run, takes out any bumps and smooth It out. People who work on the mountain groom some of the runs once the mountain is closed for the night.
TERRAIN PARK
Terrain parks have a lot of different features
like jumps, boxes, rails and pipes.
Unfortunately most injuries happen in the
terrain park. There are lots of ways to get
injured in the terrain park like landing wrong
on a jump and breaking a bone or falling
off of a rail and hitting your head on it. The
snow in the terrain park is usually groomed
because if there was powder everywhere
you wouldn't get going fast enough to hit a
jump. The ski mainly used for terrain park is
twin tips which are skis with tips on the back
as well as the front. Twin tips usually have a
special shape to the ski so it hurts less to
land off big jumps.
MOGULS
Moguls are bumps in a run made by other skiers. Over
time people ski and moguls
are formed. There are several
different techniques for
moguls. Lots of people do not
like mogul runs because you
cannot go fast and it makes
your legs sore. There are no
specific type of ski that you
have to use.
TREE RUNS
Tree runs are similar to powder skiing because there is usually powder
everywhere. The only difference
between the two are in tree runs you
are surrounded by trees. In tree runs
there are usually some small jumps. Something good about tree runs is
that they are not very busy because
sometimes they are kind of hidden.
Sometimes when tree runs have
been skied a lot there are moguls in them.
HELI SKIING
Heli skiing is when people take a
helicopter to the top of a mountain and ski to the bottom. They take a
helicopter because they have to in
order to get to the best powder.
Most people do this a couple of days
straight because it is a once in a life time opportunity and they don’t
want to only do it for one day. Most
people go in groups because there is
a risk of avalanche. For heli skiing you
have to have powder skis because the powder is so deep.
CATSKIING
Catskiing is very similar to heli
skiing in lots of different
ways. In fact the only
differences are in catskiing
you don’t go to the top of
the mountain and the main
difference is you don’t go
up in a helicopter, you go in
a vehicle that climbs up the
mountain.

SELF REFLECTION
I really enjoyed learning even more
than I already knew about skiing.
Everything that I learned was very
interesting to me but if I had to chose
the most interesting thing it would be
learning about the top 10 ski resorts. I
think I did well on having lots of
pictures and creating visual pictures. I
think I could have done better by
putting in more information. Overall I
enjoyed learning about skiing.
